She's pretty from what I can see. I wonder what the story is on her need to cover her face. Was she one of Michael Jackson's ponies? Is she a Mexican wrestler? Is she horribly disfigured from a fight with a dragon? So much mystery.

My guess is fall. She is part of the Crystal Princess Celebration line which all the alicorn Twilight merch is going to be a part of, and that's due for release in the fall.

I highly doubt she's going to be on the show. Most waves of the G4 single releases have been new characters who never appeared on the show--the only exception is Lyra and Trixie, and they were already on the show (and fan favorites) before the toys were ever released.
This one, Sunset Shimmer, is using the same vector as Twilight Sparkle on the box, so she's not even getting her own lineart. (Others like Lily Blossom and Rainbow Flash got their own unique lineart on the box and still never made a show appearance.)
We've seen the Mane 6 at the toy fair with the same masks on their faces, so I think the masks are just the accessory Hasbro is throwing in with the singles so parents will be duped into buying a tenth Rarity and twentieth Pinkie Pie lol. And looks like this pony is going to be the only new character in this wave. At least, that we've seen so far.

Good catch Aperture! I forgot about the G3 Sunshimmer. So It looks like yellow sun themed pony went through every generation except that in G2 her hair changed to blue briefly nd then changed back to red in G3.

I agree with Cat and Flitter that usually random ponies are not show ponies-
but I think this pony will have been made (hopefully) after the big structure change at Hasbro- where they promised to have the peeps running the show more closely involved with the toy thing-
I am hoping that is true and maybe thinking that it is given all of the show characters at Toyfair this year- guess we will find out someday!

I think she will be on the show. Her name is definitely a callout to "Twilight Sparkle" and her symbol is really, really unique. I mean, it's not as "clip-art-ish" as the typical G4, if that makes sense.
Maybe Twilight will get a student of her own, and it will be this pony. (Or maybe she is her long-lost twin separated at birth, if we're going full soap-opera, ha ha!)

Someone over there asked a writer on the show about this girl, and they said that this pony -would- show up in the show, but that they were surprised that Hasbro had picked this pony to make into a toy. It made it sound like she might be a background character somewhere, or a not very important pony, but that she will show up. ^_^

Going by the Brony Background Character Database: No, Lily Blossom didn't. Cherry Berry, yes (she was actually a background character before she was a toy). Cherry Pie, no.
Interesting that one of the writers confirmed Sunset would be in the show! Don't they often tend to not post spoilers like that, though?

Oh wow, that rumor sounds like it got quite mangled up. Several weeks ago I posted nearly the same info, but I don't think it was from a writer of the show, just someone having something to do with Hasbro merchandise on some other pony site.

I can't wait for her to come out- I feel confident these things will hit my Target (don't see anything to make me believe they are a TRU exclusive, but I guess you never know till they are out).
It's odd but I haven't actually seen any of the design-a-ponies at my Target although I know others have- so I'll have to consider other sources for Luna I suspect.
Anyone pre-ordering one of those Luna lots from Toywiz? If you do and need to unload a pony, let me know :D

Mhh, if she was only a backgrounder she probably wouldn't have such a unique design (but that's just me speculating, I don't follow the writers' twitters and such). Her cutie-mark reminds me of the Yin Yang symbol. Must investigate further ;)

If she is an antagonist it would explain why they were surprised a toy was made of her.

I'm thinking she may be more of a one-shot character like, say, Photo Finish or Little Strongheart (but a pony), which is why they were surprised. Hasbro doesn't have any stipulations against releasing brushables of antagonists since we now have Trixie, NMM, and Chrysalis toys, (and Gilda, but she's not a brushable... or a pony :P). Who knows! I'm really curious as to why they were surprised, given that background ponies have and continue to be released as brushables, and Ms. Shimmer is much too thorough to be a bg pony.
My other guess is that she is a pony from a legend, an ancient magician like Starswirl the Bearded, that Twilight reads about. The similarity in name is because the audience is meant to draw a parallel between her and Twilight, sort of like Daring Do and Rainbow Dash.

Well, Princess Golden Light and Golden Light unicorn both had yellow hair. Which yellow G1 pony had that combo?

Oh finally something I want bad! I find it odd that Hasbro didn't just reuse the name Sun Shimmer, but has to be SunSET Shimmer instead. Apart from the darker orange, she looks almost reminiscent of the G3 pony. Love that she's a unicorn ^.^

I think "Sunset Shimmer" is a play off "Twilight Sparkle". Sunset is the same time as twilight (generally speaking) and "shimmer" and "sparkle" are synonyms. :)

Since we're all guessing as to what her character will be...what if she is some past incarnation of Twilight Sparkle? That could potentially explain the similar names. Though I feel like her and Twilight becoming the next Luna/Celestia is weirdly likely to be possible (but I also feel like the show would be kinda jumping the shark at that point? Maybe a little?)

Well, as far as we know, that's supposed to be a spinoff, and FiM is supposed to continue as planned, right? So TECHNICALLY FiM doesn't have a shark in the pool yet. That's what I'm going to keep telling myself.

Sometimes I think bronies are weird. Yes, Sunset Shimmer is a similar name to Twilight Sparkle, but that's because sparkle and shimmer and twinkle and glimmer are words that are often used in pony names. The same goes for Sunny, Sunset, Starlight, Twilight, Moonbeam and all those other celestial names. They're bound to randomly connect two that are similar to another pony. I don't think they're going to get rid of a main character. The main character of a show never dies.
