Hi,
I found several new ponies at Target today (posted in "Out Now and Coming Soon" but what really stuck me was the new packaging style for the single ponies.

I miss the ponies being packaged on cards already. It reminds me how some other little toys are now being packaged. What do you think of the new packaging style?

I like the other packaging better. =p I liked separating the character art from the rest of the box and keeping it. Can't really do it in this style of packaging
-
Um...it's....different. It definitely takes up more space.
-
I dunno. They kinda do the same with Transformers so I guess I really have no strong feelings one way or another about it. And I'm not a MiB person so it would get chucked into the recycling bin anyway.
-
Aesthetically I like it, but it feels like it's meant for special release figures (like SDCC or store exclusive lines) and is just a wasteful amount of plastic for basic figures.
Have you seen the packaging for the new basic Fashion Style line that's been spotted? (post on MLPMerch) Looks like they're tied to the card/box with no plastic shell, like the Design-a-Pony range or Styling G4s.
As a MIB collector I'm not a fan, they're gonna get dusty and messy hair just sitting on the shelf. But the lack of plastic is a pro, recycling got more complicated in my city recently and less plastic is always good for the planet.
-
Ugh I hate all the extra, unnecessary plastic!!
-
Pony.Backpack my thoughts exactly!
-
mmm plastic just what the world needs more off, I am not a fan
-
Eh, too much plastic for my tastes. Plus I agree with Tulips, it feels more like a "special edition" package than something you'd find a plain ol' Rainbow Dash in. I prefer the cards personally.
-
Agreed with the rest. Too much plastic... it's not necessary
-
I got a Twilight to keep in the box because the packaging is neat, but I hope they stick to the cardboard and plastic bubble for G5.
-
I think this style of packaging it purely for this set, and its molded hair counterpart, as opposed to being a permanate change. It looks cool, but I'm not getting more plain Mane 6 toys just for the package aesthetic.
-
If I were a MIB collector I'd be into this package, I agree though it fits more of a special edition release.
But on a practical note. Less plastic please! Whenever my wife discovers a new line of G4 at the store (& of course immediately buys all of them ) we have SO much plastic to throw away when we take them all out. Its too much :(
-
Mint in box collectors would probably like this, and the package makes sense for special releases you’d want to display in box. But it is a very large amount of plastic packaging for such a small item. I liked the cardboard and bubble ones because it was good for looking at the artwork, and was fairly simple for me to remove. I hope this is just a one time thing, and has to doesn’t make this the new standard.
-
Yup, just... too much plastic! If you are going to use that much packaging at least make the figure inside look nice and special? These are just your regular run of the mill G4s...

Exactly! If these were actually collectible, high quality figures I would think the packaging was a nice touch, but seeing a regular mane 6 brushable in there is almost infuriating. That’s such a waste of plastic for yet another rerelease!
-
I personally don't mind them that much. I'm more concerned about the new Series 3 CMC packaging. The waste is horrible! With Series 1 and 2 you at least have a nice "house" to display the figure. But with this confetti stuff it's fun for like 0.00002 seconds and then it's just a BIG MESS and non of it is re-usable. Why did they change this?
But I still get more stick of those stupid LOL dolls and it worries me how popular they are. CMC S3 is bad but it's nothing compared to those when it comes to plastic waste.
-
i like the aesthetic, but agree on the too much plastic.

oh gosh, i've not got any myself but i saw a youtube video on them. don't they have loads of plastic wrapping layers, a couple of capsules (for the big ones) and in the end everything is in plastic baggies? that just seems frustrating to open, ignoring the obvious wasteful aspect.
-
I'm not a fan. They take up too much space and it doesn't even look that nice in my opinion. I'd rather them save that packaging for special releases, not plain old Mane 6 repeats
-
I have other toys with this kind of packaging, and I hate it. Not only is there too much plastic, it can be a nuisance to display, simply because it's so fragile.
-
I always preferred MOC... This new packaging is waaaay too much plastic and the package itself is soo big... why? :/ No good for a collector :P
-
I also preferred the card style over these and hope this is a one time package deal and not the new standard. I like leaving my G4 ponies MOC/MIB unless I get a duplicate. :) I saw the new Celestia with pink glitter wings but not Luna.
Does anyone know if the glitter symbol set with Trixie was supposed to only one wave? The stores in my area went from the set with Trixie to these.

I love the little house/display case for the CMC. Why would Hasbro change that?

I think it's cute! I might just for these to keep MIB! At least they display easier than anything on a card.

There's supposed to be a Wave 2. With Cheerilee, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity. Shame that it seems it was just straight up skipped. I think the gimmick looks pretty and it's definitely better than just normal old Mane 6 ponies woth nothing special about them (those packages don't count!).

Where are the burshes, extra small things that used to come with ponies. If you are gonna have that much plastic space why not put it to use!

I know! How do you expect people to brush their ponies hair or play with it if you don’t give them any brush or accessories?

Tbh! That's something that annoys me with recent G4/4.5 releases. Early on for $5 you got a pony with detailed eyes (show-accurate gradients and shines), nice hair, character variety, and each one came with a comb, wagon/saddle, and a pet. That's just the contents! The early cards had art and a little story with it.
Now you get mane6 repeats with knotted dry hair, plain eyes, no accessories of any kind, no BRUSH. I mean... they package these ponies with terrible hair, and without a comb you're not going able to fix it. All for the same price of $5. If you want Rainbow Dash to have a pair of sunglasses, the price is bumped up to what, $7? Still the same quality, and STILL no comb! And the cards? Absolutely nothing! Your run-of-the-mill stock image that's the same on every single package, and NOTHING on the back. There's no incentive in collecting G4s brand new, might as well buy them used off eBay. Or better yet, find them at Goodwill or something.
And don't even get me started on how the product description for these girls on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/My-Little-Pony-Pinkie-Classic/dp/B07BB6KL3R/ref=pd_day0_hl_21_23?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07BB6KL3R&pd_rd_r=23acba4c-1240-11e9-bf6f-1bc6f4fe85da&pd_rd_w=6TaTr&pd_rd_wg=fYuB4&pf_rd_p=ad07871c-e646-4161-82c7-5ed0d4c85b07&pf_rd_r=TTXZEYZKXWG99B07JXXT&psc=1&refRID=TTXZEYZKXWG99B07JXXT) lists the hair as a feature!
I guess maybe this is because of the molded mane ponies they put in the same type of tube packaging, but come on! Brushable hair has always been a staple for MLP. You shouldn't have to advertise it. "This My Little Pony Mane Pony 3-inch Pinkie Pie pony figure has pink hair that appears bubbly and bouncy" Please, it's the same factory ringlet you give every single pony you put out. And Rainbow Dash has "a rainbow mane and tail with an edgy look". What does that even mean? She has the same "bubbly and bouncy" hair you gave Pinkie!
Now, the packaging itself... I'm indifferent. What I DO like is the rainbow packaging that the Celestia and Luna come in. It's so pretty! I'm anxious to see what Hasbro puts out this year. Some of it looks decent, others... put hair as a feature.
I'm still looking for Sandbar...!
-
Too much plastic, but at least you get a great view of what's inside from all angles. And I like the minimalist design.
BTW, this reminds me, didn't Hasbro release a statement a few years ago that they were going to reduce their ecological footprint by using less plastic in their packaging...? I remember something along those lines. Maybe overall they have been using less plastic for their toys, and these new G4 packages are just an exception, but I honestly never really noticed that much of a change.
-
mmm plastic just what the world needs more off, I am not a fan
yep, you would think hasbro would get on the environmental bandwagon by now and try and cut back on all that unnecessary plastic fulling up our world
-
Although I would love to see less plastic, I appreciate that they're getting creative, shaking it up and trying something new. My rule is that I only keep my new G4 ponies MIB if there's some unique effort or new illustrations or something distinctive. I'm still debating if I need this packaging in my Rarity army, because I'd have to take her out to style that mane, and then put her back in for display!

I think I said this in the other thread, but I find it ironic that Hasbro are putting more time and attention into designing new packaging than new product.
As a MIP collector in general, I don't like this. This kind of packaging looks cheap and it isn't practical for storage either. I have a bunch of loose and MIP G4 and I am fine with them on the simple cards. I would like Hasbro to focus on plastic only for the toy and not so much for the box...and I would like them to focus more on making the thing inside the box actually interesting and new rather than wasting both plastic product and plastic packaging on the exact same thing over and over again.
Ten years of G4 doesn't count if eight of those years are minutely different versions of the same thing while Hasbro shows off all its possible packaging permutations.

I don't like the new packaging at all. But I don't like the new ponies either, so what :D

Sorry for off topic, but- WHAT? Is it already ten years?? Gosh, I feel old now...

:iconclap:
I was gonna say packaging #2 is kinda dollar store-ish.
-
I wasn't a fan of the standard G3 packaging, and I'm not a fan of this. I don't like funky shapes. It's impossible to stack to display MOC, and strange shapes makes saving the non-plastic stuff hard if I open it. And of course, there's the space issue. A carded pony is SO much smaller than this.
I wish Hasbro would spend some of that creativity on the actual figures instead of the packaging!
-
Just a teeny complaint - I'd rather not have real people on my MLP pony packaging.
I get that maybe they're convincing the Target Audience that yes you too can be like this girl and hold this pony - a type of identity marketing, but I'd rather it wasn't there myself.

Now that you mention it, having the girl holding the pony on the front does look a little out of place.

And gender stereotyped.

:wonder: It looks ok in the shop, or for a special edition one off type of pony.... but normal releases? :hmm: nope.
I keep most of my G4 / G4.5 MOC these days for displaying ( although I still prefer my G1 and G3 loose and for photoshoots) , and the card with plastic bubble was easy to display. These will take up waaay more space. I don't like all that plastic on this packaging... actually as a collector I don't really like any of the new packaging in this thread TBH :yikes:  I suppose it would be ok to get one pony (say you have a Twilight army or something) in it, or if you were giving one was a gift to someone it looks ok, or if you debox it isn';t too bad- well apart from all that extra plastic to get rid of..

Totally agree with you  I really don't like real peeps on my pony packaging either. Ok I know they used to do it with G1 playsets, but that didn't bother me when I was a kid and deboxing to play with them.
Plus both genders collect/play with MLP so advertising them as a "girl" toy ... no that doesn't really work- Hasbro know they have a lot of boys who are into MLP now so why do this??!!! :what:
-
I think I found another reason I don't like this new packaging. It seems to emphasize how small the pony is compared to the all the plastic surrounding it.
I'm not sure what Hasbro is trying to go for with the girl on the front of Celestia's package. :what:
I have to admit I'm disappointed that it looks like Songbird, Tempest, Sliverstream and Sandbar won't be returning. I know Songbird and Tempest are movie characters but it would have been nice to see more releases of them.

-
Well, I suppose if you were going to use that particular pony to create a custom piece the big plastic packaging might make a nice "home" for it to be displayed in.
-
I think it's cute, but I'm not really a MIP collector. I might buy and keep the Mane 6 in these packages, but anything else will end up opened eventually.
-
In regards to the packaging with the rainbow on it... I kind of like it. At least the rainbow part. It’s kind of reminiscent of the G1 logo.
But I do wish they had left the human people off the front.
-
Oh ya more plastic to sit in a land field. :( Don't like!
-

ooooh I HATE it when toys have humans on the packaging! I want to see the *toy*, not a silly kid :P
