Title: The Inner Workings of Pony Life Ponies
Post by: tailrustedtealeaf on January 03, 2020, 01:40:27 PM
(Please be kind to them in this thread)
Couldn't think of a good place to put this...but I took the head off Twilight.
The head is very easy to pop off and pop on, which makes sense considering the joint.

Regarding the body, the ball joint as much a part of the body as the wings or legs are. There is no way to access the tail from here.
Looking at the bottom of her,

It's a bit hard to see, but it looks like this is where the tail was put in. It is a bit hard to get to, but with a long exacto I suppose it wouldn't be much of a problem.

The head is fairly standard, but the neck plug now completely blocks off any access to the hair, so you would need to cut out the small ring to get in.
Both the body and the head feel like the same plastic as the G4.5 brushables.
I'd love to crack in to her and give her blue hair and a forelock but I'll need to pick up a double first.  ^.^

That's very interesting ! I'm not a huge fan of them, but I like to see the inner workings of ponies. That's good to know how to restore or customize them. ^^ Thanks a lot !!

I guess I'm gonna hafta saw the joint off in order to get the tail loose.

Thank you for showing us how they're put together .

Very interesting!  The head setup reminds me of how Monster High dolls seem to be made.  (Based on what I've seen in doll customizing videos.)

Maybe a tail could be put in and out by heating the bum with hot water and pressing the new tail in? Or is it secured like in Barbie horses?

It's sad they make them so hard these days. I love customizing G2s but their plastic is so hard... I always have to reheat them. It's like some gens want to be extra tough :P

Not that I'd plan on customizing these, but I'd be very interested in seeing how you disassemble how you'd access the tail and especially the mane.

This is like an iFixit review for pony's.

Hmm, wonder if the tails work like the McD's ponies with brushable tails - you can pull those out if you soften the glue. No clue how you would put in a new one.

These ponies might be the hardest to customize standard brushables yet! It makes me wonder what the assembly process looks like in the factory.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing! The tail, through the back leg? That's a new one, if that's how they did it O:
I also wonder if there's some sort of washer in there or if liek Zapper said, you could potentially soften the plastic and just yank the tail out through the tail hole. I'd be afraid of splitting the plastic doing that though D:

I did actually order a full case's worth off Amazon so I don't have to play Walmart jumping all month, so if I get a double of anyone (especially Twi) they are getting taken apart. Will try to yank the tail out the butt if the circle has no access, but I do think there'd be a washer in there...

She says it tickles!! She likes it!

That's kind of like the G4 alicorns. To get to the tail on them you have to remove the wings which kind of plug in to the body (requiring cutting the glue). Difficult but not impossible to put a new tail on.

I was able to cut into the plug. It's a bit deep in the head, and I'm still working at chipping away at the body's plug. I was hoping they'd be a bit more shallow...

Now you can see how thick the head plug is. Dont be afraid to go deep with cuts!
As for the body, I got super fed up with it and my dad helped me out by getting a drillhead and just going for it.

You'd think Hasbro would realize now that it's pointless to try and stop us, customizers are fearless and will conquer all obstacles in their way :silly:

I'm excited to see the outcome of this thread. :3

Yikes, just opened up Applejack and what a ridiculous mess to take out the tail. The hole on the tummy is actually combined with the lifted leg, so for ponies with the lifted leg pose, their leg has to come off to get the tail. There's not a metal washer, but a metal strip wrapped around the tail. After it's out, the hole is so small and long that you can't really pull a tail through easily, so I had to push it through. I think in the future, I will just cut the tail and try to glue one in like I do with the G4 princesses. I'll probably eventually add a tutorial to my PowerPoint on G4 step by step customizing instructions (found in links on the Customs Board).

I finally got one of these ponies and I cannot get over how tiny they are and how much work it's going to be to do anything with them.

I happen to get AJ since she was the only one at Walmart. I'm wondering if I can get to the tail from removing her front leg as it does look like it was initially a separate piece that was stuck on... when I get around to it I'll let you all know, unless someone beats me to that lol

I'm sure tailrustedtealeaf has found out what I just found out... the tail, imo, is not worth trying to get out.
Yes it has a metal clasp (no washer in AJ) but the whole tail is GLUED inside the pony. I completely broke the clasp and now trying my hardest to dig the tail stub out of the mass of glue

I managed to get the whole tail out finally on AJ, but I destroyed the clip in the process and had to dremel drill the tail stub after cutting said tail

It can’t be accidental that ponies are getting increasingly harder and harder to customize. I guess this is Hasbro’s way of cracking down on the pony customs market?

I think it's less that and moreso ponies are getting smaller. The smaller your pony, the less hollow it can be.

Height wise, yes... however, their body sizes have decreased while their head sizes have increased

I'll edit this in a bit when I get the photos uploaded

It really does feel like they're trying to cut down on customizing, but also I've never gotten the impression that they dislike customizers? they've always seemed to be okay with it. So maybe it's just a coincidence.

I didn't realize how skinny the new ponies are :o

I don't think Hasbro minds ponies being sold on the custom market.  I agree that the difficulty is just a result of ponies being smaller, and therefore less hollow.

AFAIK Hasbro still to this day sells G3 blanks, and their explicit purpose is to be customized.  Every pony that is bought with the intent of customizing it puts money in Hasbro's pocket.
