Title: Water Living Ponies in the Movie confirmed-- what are they?
Post by: WaterRaven on June 28, 2017, 09:02:23 PM
Now that the toys and trailers are out for the new movie, I am seeing a lot of fans writing about the "seaponies," but the new design matches merponies. Are we just ignoring that and referring to them all as seaponies now? So confused. I posted something similar when the toys first came out and I believe we agreed they looked like merponies, but what are they calling them in the movie and on the store shelf?

I thought I'd put photos in below for fun :)

I agree they are mer-ponies more than sea ponies.
For what ever reason the new style reminds me of the G3 breezies.
I feel like they have a bug like quality to the face and they have those fins that just look like wings to me.

Maybe that is what you get when you breed G3 breezies with G1 sea ponies.

LoL and thank you! They really do look like Breezie-sea pony hybrids!

I love my G1 flutter ponies and my windy wings (which I am assuming were the first breezies?), but I literally gave away my G4  breezies. I think they look weird.

I double checked the descriptions in a couple of places and it looks like everywhere is calling them sea ponies. Whatever I guess :/ The design also conflicts with their Under the Sparkling Sea mer/sea ponies as well.

I think at this point, with comics, books, the show, Equestria Girls, and now the movie, I should stop trying to hope for any sort of continuity and solid world building.

Hasbro has oficially named them Seaponies (see packaging) Ik honestly dont mind that much though. Seapony sounds easier to understand then Merpony though.

Here's a pic of Princess Skystar in the package.

Hasbro calls them Seaponies, I'm going to hazard the guess because they wanted to simplify that ponies that live in the water are automatically called Seaponies (despite the fact they are not even remotely like Seahorses)

G4 Seaponies are more related to the Greek Hippocampus in some sense.

Yeah, I'd agree that it'd be nice if Hasbro could have come up with a different name.  But with Hasbro officially calling them "seaponies" I just find it easier to go with it.  If I want to distinguish, I'll just say g1 seaponies vs G4 seaponies.

Officially they're "seaponies", which seems ludicrous to me since they're pretty obviously merponies, they don't look a bit like the G1 sea ponies (note space in name).. -_- But that's Hasbro for you.

If you look closely at the animation, the G4 seaponies' legs end in fins, not hooves. So I don't think they are quite traditional merponies either. I think seaponies is a fine name for them, though it would have been nice to choose a name that hasn't been used yet, to avoid confusion (in the comics I think they use the term mermares).

They're called sea ponies.  I think it sounds better than 'merponies'.

I don't really find it confusing?  G1 and G4 are different generations so there are going to be differences.

I mean, "merponies" isn't the correct term for creatures with front-end-of-horse-back-end-of-fish either.  (The correct term is hippocampus.  Which translates into . . . sea-horse.  So we're back where we started, lol.)

Out of boredom I looked up the translation of mermaid. Mer comes from an old English word "mere"...... Which can mean sea.

Still calling em merponies.

I think they were initially called Mermares, like the book, but changed it to Seaponies because that was more well known.

Yea I have to agree these are not sea ponies at all.  I understand why they would use that term. I agree though that the Mermaid pony thing makes more sense to me based on how they look, but that might be harder to say I guess. I don't know.  I just kind of ignore G4 so, I had not really given this a lot of thought.  I mean I want the G1 sea ponies to be released and this line worries me I am  never going to see that.  :pout:

I'm going with the official name on this one. I sort of get where people are coming from, but g3 and g4 breezies are different, but they're both breezies. G4 mini sets are technically not Blind Bags, but we call the individual ponies that rather than 'ponyvilles', which if we were going by past gens, that's what we'd call them. Look at the G3 Sparkle ponies, we don't call them that, even though they are made exactly the same way, they're Divine Shines. Ponyland is confusing, but we go with it, and it usually ends up easier calling them by the official names, for the sake of uniformity. I'm guessing mermares may have been ditched if there were male ponies in the movie? Someone has pointed out that mermares doesn't actually work, and and they've slapped the next best thing on: Seaponies. But in the end, that's what we got, and I'm okay with it. It might be easier to take once you watch the movie and hear them called seaponies a few gazillion times?

I'm really enjoying everyone's perspective on this. I get that they went with sea pony because it would be easiest to say and with MLPs past with sea ponies, but as a G1 gal, I do get a bit of an eye twitch when I see a pony that looks like a a merpony, but is called a sea pony. I got used to merpony instead of hippocampus originally though (I love mythology, but for the sake of the toys, went with hasbro's merpony term), so I'll get used to the new sea pony, but out of fun, I feel like drawing a ton of different sea pones and coming up with different looks and body types and labeling them :D

It's interesting, I always considered sea ponies to be like sea horses, thus no legs and figured merponies were the MLP version of a hippocampus etc, but after multiple generations, various publications (comics and books), seven seasons of the current gen, pink and yellow people in Equestria girls, and now the movie... I give up :)

I'll just roll with it.

Thanks so much for the input and replies guys!

They are supposed to be G4 sea ponies, but they look nothing like the ones presented in the book 'under the sparkling sea'.

It took me a while to get used to the G4 look in terms of the cartoon and the toys, but now I like them both, so I'll get used to this is too I guess, but I think a lot of us had our hopes up for that classic sea pony look. I have Under the Sparkling Sea on my list to buy because the images I've seen from the book are so beautiful, so I'm surprised they didn't go with that look either, but oh well.

Thanks for responding :)

Well Merpony isn't gender-specific so they should've gone with that. Part of the reason I think we call things differently is because there's nothing else to associate them with. Sea ponies we do as evidenced with G1. At least with G4 breezies the resemblence to G3 Breezies is there. There's no resemblence to G1 seaponies with FiM sea ponies. Seems like they took the name literally and just said "hey, ponies that live in the sea" = seaponies."
