Title: Anybody left that grew up with G1 ponies?
Post by: SkyCakes on June 18, 2017, 11:37:06 AM
I definitely did. I had a blast playing with the ponies. I remember when they first came out in the stores. I still think back to those days of playing with the showstable. I also loved Brandy the doggy. He had such soft plastic legs. I also had a hard time fitting applejack into the show stable. Then came the Dream castle which I played with alot. My Majesty had weird yellow regrind on her legs I thought an alien from space slimed her. I also think back to saving up for the mail order ponies. Though I didn't get them all the rainbow ponies were the best. There was also the time my dog chewed up my ponies so he was banned for going around me when I played with them. He wasnt very happy but I was so mad at him I thought he owed me money. lol.

I love your story Skycakes!  Thanks for sharing.

I grew up in the 80s but wasn't interested in ponies yet because the commercials were freaky and I was like Eeew, and I didn't know there was a cartoon or I would have gotten hooked then.  I really missed out.  I was more interested in playing with computers.

Dogs don't have pockets!  Poor chewed up ponies.  Wow Majesty had regrind when she was current?  I remember saving up for non-pony mail order stuff too and it didn't always arrive.  Ponies would have been a better investment.  i look forward to reading everyone else's pony stories in this thread.

My sister first got Apple Jack, a sea pony, and baby Moondancer.  That's how I first met and fell in love with ponies.  Then I got Windy and Pinwheel, then Paradise, Magic Star and some others.  But because I was a boy, I was made fun of and forced to get rid of them.  A few years later, I tried getting into ponies again.  I got three sweet berry ponies, Magic Hat, some others and I mailed off for and got mail order Star Hopper and Clipper.  But then again I was made to get rid of them.  Then in college I met baby Yo Yo, and it started all over a third time.

Another old fart here. I do still have my childhood ponies, all 10 of them (and like 500+ more now...). I remember them in stores; I was obsessed with getting glittering gem. I just love the packaging on G1's.

Here's one of two childhood pictures I have in my possession. I liberated it as I wanted it with my collection. (The rest of my baby photos, who knows where they are if my dad kept them after my parents got divorced...) Best part is, I don't remember quackers, so I don't think this one was actually mine, I was very particular with my toys.

I did. I was the only boy I knew who collected and played with ponies.

I got most of my herd second-hand so I didn't know about the early sets and didn't know the names of my early ponies who weren't featured in the cartoons.

With some of them I assumed they were ponies from the cartoons but for some unknown reason their symbols  were different. I remember wondering why my Posey had hearts (Peachy) and why my Gusty had flowers (Majesty).

I remember dad taking me to the toy store and buying me Sweet Notes. I remember my mom coming home one morning before I had preschool with two Magic Message ponies she'd gotten from a department store after work: Windy & Mirror Mirror.

I remember coming home from school one day and my parents giving me a bag with 4 ponies from the thrift store: Glory, August Poppy, Moonstone, and Sweet Stuff. Sweet Stuff instantly became my favorite, as she was the only TE pony I'd ever seen in person until a year ago. Morning Glory was my other favorite since she was the only flutter pony I'd ever seen in person.

It wasn't until adulthood (and the internet) that I discovered the hundreds of ponies I'd never seen before that point and that were such things as international exclusives.

I did. :) My grandparents had a copy of My Little Pony/Rescue at Midnight Castle that I watched a lot when I went to visit with them. My first pony was Cotton Candy although I don't remember actually getting her. I do remember my grandma buying me the Birthday Party gift set and Sparkle pony Twinkler. Twinkler came with pony makeup and I used up a lot of it giving her lipstick. I have a few sea ponies but lost them all except Baby celebrate to the mold the monster because I played with them in the tub.

I also had the Baby Bonnet School of Dance and the Lullaby Nursery. And a Dream Beauty. Sadly I let a few of my childhood ponies slip away when I went through my "never going to be in to ponies" stage and parted with my childhood Starshine, Dream Beauty, Pina Colada , Baby Palm Tree and got rid of my nursery patly because it had been broken in a car vs house accident.  I still regret getting rid of my nursery and of course when I got back in to ponies I wanted a Starshine, Baby Palm Tree and Pina Colada back. I have yet to replace them or the nursery. I still have my other childhood ponies except one (I bought a replacement for her though) and hope to one day replace the others.

I don't have any pictures of me playing with my ponies, but I do have a pic where I dressed up in a MLP costume complete with mask. Sadly I don't have that either. I do have home movies of getting 2 ponies for my birthday one year, Pina Colada and Starflash.

I can so relate! I went through the same kind of thing. My parents pushed for me to get rid of my ponies around age 7, only for me to buy more a couple years later. Then, 15+ years after getting rid of those I started my adult collection. You're not alone in having gone through that. :)

I've been around since the beginning.  My earliest ponies from years 1 through 3 were Peachy with Pretty Parlor, Blossom, Bubbles, Firefly, Sparkler, Sky Flier, Powder, Windy, Baby Moondancer, Baby Firefly, Sealight,  and Surf Rider. I was also around in the early days of the online community. I mostly lurked on the edges, but Sebby6 remembers me; we emailed and traded a lot.

It seems like so many of the oldschool collectors have left the hobby; it makes me kind of sad. I always enjoy these threads that reassure me there are still some other oldschoolers around.

I think its important to keep hope alive. I am sure there are more than this but we may not know it.

I still have the Moondancer mum bought me because it came out the year I was born and was cute. The Nursery I had is lost in some vortex in my old bedroom but I managed to retain the vast majority of my childherd (still wondering where one of the merponies and two babies went...  :pout:) and have them mostly available for play if my Youngest wishes. Tux I got through mailorder as the only land adult male I had since I didn't since I never saw the commercials for the other menfolk and reigned supreme with Sprinkles and Glory. I had Drummer and Racer but couldn't convince a playfriend to trade several babies for Leaper. I did trade a Lemon Drop for a seapony baby (no float) so my trading skills weren't entirely bad.

I did! But I only had one pony until G2 came out. I loved all my ponies though! My beloved Star Hopper slept on my bed next to my pillow every night, so when I opened my eyes I'd see her first in the morning.

Yes I grew up with the original ponies! I don't remember them so well though I do know I had a fair number maybe around 30. I had to donate most of them but I still have 6 from my childhood herd. I collect all the generations but G1 is the best for designs and nostalgia. Sometimes I stop collecting and leave the community but I always come back haha

I have my and my sister's childhood collection. Missing a few things because my sister had a teen pregnancy and lived at home until my niece was 8. So unfortunately for me, my niece got all our old toys and my sister is not sentimental and doesn't keep much. Luckily for me I was a collector in my teens until I moved out around 20, shortly after my niece was born. So MOST of the ponies and things like my care bears were packed away in my boxes in the garage until I had space for them one day. She did end up with a lot of them though and I was able to rescue some as she grew out of them but many are sadly missing so I think they got donated. I was part of the online community back in the late 90's early 2000's too but don't remember if I was very active. Started collecting again in 2011 when my daughter was 4 and I brought out my old ponies for her to play with. Then I realized I wasn't done with them and bought her some G4's instead and started my collecting again.

For some reason I thought MLPs were silly when they first came out.  Then I got Gusty and the Best of the West outfit one day when shopping with my Granny and I was hooked.  I'd spend a lot of time looking throught the leaflet that had drawings of all the ponies available at the time.  The illustrations were so pretty.   Soon Applejack,  Pinwheel, Windy, Sunlight and many others joined the herd.   Then one day my mom bought me the Pretty Parlour for either a birthday or Christmas and I loved that set.  (sold it a few years later but as an adult I regretted it and bought another one from an Arena member).  Money was very tight so I'd comb garage sales hoping to find some more ponies for cheaper than the stores and I often had success.
I've collected for around 33 years now and  I still have all my childhood ponies plus others from G2's to the current G4's so my herd is around 300 with most being G1's.

In one of those funny, who would have thought things...   A close friend of mine turns out to know one of the original G1 sculptors,  Kirk Hindman.   Small world!   I eventually got to meet him and have a signed Bubbles on one of my pony shelves.    Very cool guy and his wife is very nice as well.  Spent a good amount of time chatting and traded numbers to keep in touch.

You mean a good chunk of the arena? ;) Yeah for sure I did. I had ponies at a very young age. I believe Windy was my first. I watched the cartoons and my mom decided around 12 I was too old for ponies and gave them to charity.

*raises hand* I'm one of the oldies too. I started with Snuzzle and later Minty and a couple of outfits (Pony Royal and Parade Pizzazz) I still remember how excited I was to have them. I remember when I got Snuzzle I didn't even know what MLP was, (being like four or five) but once I had her and knew there was more I wanted any and all I could get and when Minty came home with clothing for both of them to wear I felt on top of the world.
I still have most of my collection from childhood and Snuzzle and Minty now hang out close to my bed rather than in it like they did when I was little.

Oooooo! Yes! Me too! I did!

And I loved them from the first two ponies my parents bought for me when we went on holiday one year (Bubbles and Bowtie). I had a (very) large childhood herd that went with me everywhere and I would play with them at my best friend's house too. She also had ponies, only different ones to me. I actually remember which ponies she had now, whereas she has forgotten. I also remember really wanting Hopscotch, who another friend of mine had, but I didn't. Most of my childhood ponies inexplicably vanished in between our many moves. Short story is: they were supposed to be in one of the four boxes jealously hoarded and carefully kept safe. But were not. Big scar.

However I was right in there at the starting line as it were, and so had moved on somewhat before the G2 ponies came out and have only now become aware of many G1's. I always wanted, but never managed to own a TE pony, a flutter pony and a Big Brother pony. One had to wait for people to give you these things when one was a child and we did not have car boot sales etc. here in SA.

So all in all I suppose it is not terribly surprising that, as an adult, I have come back to ponies. And, when we had a room converted into a library, I designed a special cabinet for displaying my ponies. On hindsight it should have been much bigger of course  ;)

yep. still alive and kickin.

my sisters had Magic Star and another So Soft, and some MLP "Softies".  They also had the Baby Bonnet School of Dance which was fun.  I also remember we had a family set of purple sparkly fakies that were included in our G1 adventures.

Funny thing - my sisters don't remember much of this.   Aw well. Good memories anyway.

I had a few.  :)  Ponies weren't really my thing but I managed to snag a few.

My older sister had Glory, who lived pristinely on her bookshelves until the day she donated her.  I'm still kicking myself for not asking to take her, but I wasn't into ponies at the time.  However, I still have her sticker.

I, on the other hand, had SS Windwhistler as a Christmas present when I was four (and promptly lost at the mall not long after.)  I also recieved Raincurl when I was six; still have her.  Finally, at some point in childhood, I received Sundance secondhand but I don't remember when this was.  Probably when I was ten or eleven.

I got Baby Glory when I was five. One year for Christmas my sister and I each got a princess.  Mine was a unicorn and hers was just an earth pony, so my princess was always better in my eyes, which was important since I was younger and always felt like I got hand-me-downs and the stuff she didn't want.  My older sister always seemed to have better ponies than me (by that I mean she had a pegasus and so softs and I didn't have any) so one year for Christmas I got the Party Pack and I was SO excited because it had a So Soft Pegasus AND a Flutter pony but then my parents said they forgot to take those two out because they were going to give them to my sister.  I know I told them I was okay with it but really I was sad.  They took the two best ponies out of the pack and gave them to my sister (who eventually broke the Flutter wings, which is what my parents figured I'd do with it).  Even through multiple moves I kept my ponies and my sister's once she got tired of them.  I went through a long phase where I wasn't really into them, but I still kept them and now I'm glad that I did.  I have given my sister some of her ponies back to give to her daughter but I have duplicates of the ones she took back so it's not a huge deal.  (And yes, I did get back both the So-Soft and Flutter that should have been mine in the first place!)

Don't let my avatar fool you, I just think she is cute.  I am a collector of g1 ponies.  I bought Firefly way back in the day with my own allowance money.  Glory followed as soon as the local discount store (Pragne Way, which no longer exists) got her in.  I must have been 7 or 8 at the time and my interest only lasted through year 3 or 4.  I did have the castle, parlor, waterfall, and show stable and about 30 other ponies total.  I remember getting the collector set in the mail after sending in my points and money.  That was pretty exciting.  Then about 5 years ago, pony nostalgia hit me and what a ride it has been  ^.^

Me!!!
My first ponies were NBBE Ribbons and Galaxy. Growing up I had only 32 ponies, as my parents always complained they all looked exactly the same. My mother had a friend, and her daughter had over 100 at that time, and even Paradise Estate. I remember how much I loved it when my parents arranged dinner at that family's house. The two of us spent hours playing with her treasures. I was so jealous.
When I was finally able to justify spending so much money on Paradise Estate a few years ago, I became one of the happiest pony people in the world.

Yep!  I did!  Wish I had the pics here to post.  I'll have to get them from my mom!

Posey, Starshine, and Princess Primrose are the earliest ones I remember having.  I had about 40 as a kid plus the lavender dream castle.  Still have them all!  My Dad worked for Wal-Mart when I was young and I'd get to pick a new pony when we went to town to see him at the store!

A few of my pony acquiring memories are buying the Apple Delight Family at Toys R Us (back when that store was just HUUUUUGE long aisles of toys that stretched as far as you could see and as high as the sky!).  That was amazing for me because I'd never even seen a boy pony before!  He ended up being the only boy I ever had as a kid.  I got SHS Flower Dream at WM, Baby Princess Sparkle/Buggy at KBToys at the mall, and the blue mermaid G1 at a travel center on the way to see my grandparents.  My mom almost didn't let me get the mermaid because it was overpriced at the gas station.  Glad I did it, anyway!  I also remember the day my Kelloggs baby FINALLY came in the mail!  WOO!

Me too!!
I was around 5 when they first came out so I got years of G1 bliss. LOL
I can still remember seeing them in the store and the new smell.  :)
And oh the fun of the mail orders! And collecting the horseshoe points!
And all the choices and how I wanted them all! LOL
I didn't get them all obviously, but being an only child I did pretty well.  ;)

I still have almost all the ones I grew up with as well plus the play sets. A couple ponies disappeared after so many years and some accessories as well. But gosh it's pretty impressive what I do have considering how long I've had them and how many times I've moved since then. LOL
BlueBelle was my first of course and then the rest of the originals. It was only the beginning. Soooo many wonderful memories!

I also still have a lot of my Rainbow Brite stuff, Carebears and several other miscellaneous toys from the 80s. What a wonderful era for toys!!

I was more of a 90s kid (since I was only barely conscious in the 80s, LOL!), but I definitely have memories of growing up with G1!! My collection from childhood was primarily the later lines of G1, like the neon and tropical type ponies, but I had a babysitter who was a neighbor too, and she was basically a proto adult collector! She had TONS of ponies, and before she and her family moved away, she gave me a bunch of ponies from her collection! So even though I personally received mostly 90s ponies new, I also owned quite a few 'old' ponies, too, like Blue Belle and Glory and Moondancer! They were produced before I was even born, but they were some of my favorites!

What a fun thread!! I can't wait to go back and read through all the other responses!

I had a little bit of everything when it came to toys as a kid, but the big three were art supplies, Lego and My Little Pony.  Those were always at the top of my birthday or christmas lists.

First pony was Applejack or possibly Cotton Candy, but I do remember Applejack for certain.  Didn't have much in the way of playsets; Lullabye Nursery, Brush Me Beautiful Boutique, Poof n' Puff Palace and the two baby buggies, and I mostly had baby ponies rather than full sized ones - kid!me loved the accessories they came packaged with.

I grew up with G1 ponies! Unfortunately I was at the tail (get it pony tail) end of G1. So they are what I would consider my childhood ponies but I was limited in purchasing them (I was 3 in 1991 when I got my first pony and they stopped making them in the US). I believe since I loved G1 so much and tried to get them when I could barely find any in stores... it was partially what helped fuel the collecting urge. G2 I would still count as growing up but I was kind old at the time (10 years old) so they were always secondary in my herd to the G1. G3 for me was the major "collecting" time, I was old enough to transition to full collector. :D

But overall... I grew up on G1 ponies.

I'm glad this thread was created. I was starting to feel so old seeing how many replies were on the G3 thread. XD I'm so glad we have so many young collectors now though! :D

*grins and waves* my first ponies came from my great grandmother; she gave me Powder and Sky Flier for Christmas, and they started an obsession, haha!  I used to go with one of my Grandmas to yard sales every other Saturday, and I would get a whole $5 to spend...that added up to a LOT of ponies, haha!  I did get new ponies on birthdays and holidays, but just as many, if not more, were yard sale rescues. :)  here's a pic from about 1994, I think:

My little sis had got hold of them and was playing with them in a giant mud puddle, so I was trying to clean them all up.

So in a lot of ways, haha, I have an advantage for pony hunting: I have a lot of practice(30+ years...wait, when did I get that old?!?) at spotting a whisp of hair or a sad eye or hoof peeking out of a box!

Yep :)  I got my first pony Bow Tie when I was either four or five... I'm nearly 37 now... so getting up there  :lookround: (omg... that number looks really old when I write it like that!!   )

My Little Ponies were by far and way my most favourite and cherished toys. I still have most of my childhood ponies - sold off a couple when I first started collecting as an adult. Of course I later regretted it, so those ponies (not my original ones though) have rejoined the herd. I remember vividly ponies in stores - and buying TAF Buttons (my brother and I were allowed to pick a toy from The Toy Warehouse).
I remember mum saying, are you sure, love? She's a bit on the ugly side.... LOL!!!

Late to the party thanks to bad wifi at my hotel for my conference, but coming in now :)

First pony in '84. Windy. Rainbow Pony. I had a few over the next few years and it exploded from about 87. I had 66 ponies when MLP ended in '94. We then discovered a clearance store in '94-5 and also started carbooting, so added about another 300 or more over the next few years, either second hand or from that clearance store. First discovered the online pony community in 97, and the rest is history.

So I guess I'm still growing up with them ;)

Bad but fairly old picture from the mid 90s, depicting my childhood collection ponies. There should be 66, though that includes two petites and a charm which may not be visible. They are there, between the sea ponies, but you really have to look...

I always asked for ponies when it ame to birthdays and christmas and so on and I had a pretty nice herd back then. My favourite ponies as a kid were Sugar Sweet and Sugar Apple <3

We have an adorable home video of my sister (aged about seven?) telling Dad very seriously about all of our recent carboot sale finds and all about each pony. My sister has always been small for her age and at that point she was really very cute indeed.

I sometimes think my sister was doubly lucky because she was born in 87, grew up with my ponies then had her own at age 3, and then for most of her childhood (at least from when she was about 7) we went to carboot sales and picked up cheap new ponies every week. She also benefitted from trading because I traded for her as well as for me, and we shared the cost of carboot trade ponies. By the time she started secondary school she had about 200 ponies because of this. How nice a childhood that must have been, to have the possibility of a new pony from any time period or even overseas almost every week...

@Einhornbaby, did you have Baby Blossom as a childhood pony too? :D You and I are the same age.

Bought her from a flea market back then (still vivdly remember which one and who was with me, lol). I wanted her SOOO badly for years but she was out of stores already when I heard of her. You cant imagine how amazed I was to get her when it happened <3 :D Lol and I remember my friend giving me a strange look when I showed her Baby Blossom, haha. She was like "Whats that boring thing??" :P

I totally did!  My older sister and I didn't have hundreds, but we had about a dozen between us, and when my little sister finally rolled around- she had even more!  Thanks to her we had a few from a longer span of years than we might otherwise have... unfortunately she then turned to Barbie.

Even after I hit the age where it was no longer cool to like ponies- I still had baby Moondancer and baby Cotton Candy on my desk for ages up through high school even...

Mine has seen so many adventures with me I literally have no idea what version she was originally xD. She was my second pony, I was three years old, and she was the one that triggered me into really liking MLP. I think she's adorable, though. I always really loved her. I have a picture of me with my Gran and my mum and I'm holding her in the photo. I was probably about four or five in that picture, and I was still taking her all over.

This is her as she is now. Looking at her I think she may be straight-haired, but not many of my early childhood curly ponies still have curls, so it's hard to be sure. I'm sure she's faded a lot too over the years xD.

I managed to get a MIB (UK box) one some years ago, and the colour difference is a bit scary ;)

I love reading these!  Some of your stories are a little sad though.

I think G1 year 2 and 3 were the days when I longed to own every pony and I spent all my time wishing I could go to pony land.  Knowing I couldn't broke my heart.  Growing up is hard sometimes!

Also, I agree with the thread having a bittersweet feel to it. To add further angst, I'll share a poem I wrote about growing up and mlp when I was just turning 20 nearly 13 years ago now.

In memory of Pony Land
a place I often sought
the place seemed long abandoned
but I never quite forgot
Flutter Valley caught my eye
wings that beckoned me
the playtime’s songs and innocence
of Lullaby Nursery
And times spent within the walls
of dream castle fresh in mind
Majesty there by my side
a place I could always find
Growing up takes some time
but it didn’t take long enough
I used to say ‘I want to grow up’
and then fate called my bluff
I stare at lifeless ponies
all lined up for show
tears slipping from my eyes
unable to let go
The world moves on around me
still I cling to the past
hold dearly to to my little ponies
to make those freedoms last

I grew up with the classic ponies :) Even though I had the right age when they came out I didn't know they existed until 1986 but I fell in love with them from the first time I saw one. My first pony was Cotton Candy. From 1988 I got really pony crazy. I played with them on a daily basis and I remember going to the toy store every once in a while to buy a new pony or two. I never grew out of them and was very sad when they disappeared from the stores. I never stopped looking for them though and years later I found the second generation. Even though I had reached adulthood by then I am a forever kid so I guess you can say I have continued growing up with the following generations too.

I was born in '87, so I was a bit late to join the fun. However, things are always behind in The Netherlands, so that was my luck! I got my first pony for my 4th birthday, Kisscurl, and Squirmy followed soon. I was hooked, and pony's became my life until I was about 10. :newpony:

Another "old" collector here! I just turned 40 actually :) I am also one of the oldies in terms of the online community (started in 1998) but I wasn't as active as many. I still come and go, but I'm always a G1 fan!

I got my first pony, Cotton Candy, for Christmas in 1984. I was completely hooked from then on. My second pony was Parasol, who I picked out b/c she came with a brush AND A COMB but I was never that crazy about her. My collection grew with Year 3-5--I can remember how excited I was when the new commercials came out!--but by 1988 or so I was mainly interested in Year 2. The problem was that these ponies were long gone from the stores and I never went to yard sales, so how to get them??? I finally got rid of my collection (including original boxes, etc.--ugh) in 1994, in part b/c I figured I would never be able to complete my Year 2 main set b/c I had never ever seen Bubbles or Seashell in the wild. I did keep my original Cotton Candy. Little did I know the INTERNET would soon bring any pony or accessory I wanted within reach! After a truly magical moment of finding SEASHELL (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) at a charity attic sale, I got online to see if there was anything about MLP out there, and the rest . . . is history!

I have a very good memory and I supplied some of the info for the old Dream Valley site including the words to some of the early commercials. When I was little I had a catalog knowledge of each brush and ribbon that came with each pony, and once I got online my encyclopedic knowledge came in handy :)

Yep! I was born in the beginning of the line, so quite naturally my favorites are from year 5 and earlier... upset I was "too old" per my parents standard for ponies when the neat ones came out. The last one I remember buying with my own funds was Leafy & Luckyleaf.... hence my adult army! My first pony gift I remember was from my parents when they left me at my grandmas when they went on an anniversary getaway- It was Skydancer, the rainbows are another set of favorites.

I have a few more in photobucket, but the quality is just as poor.
http://s591.photobucket.com/user/chipsterj/library/Collection/Childhood%20pony%20love?sort=3&page=1

I remember my mother asking me to select 15 ponies and the rest would be donated --- I picked the "cheap" ones. Only 5 of my childhood ones exist in my collection today.

I know I have a photo somewhere, looks like I'll need to re-take it!

Another older collector. My first pony was in 1984 from my mom. It was Blue Bell whom I chose because she was my favorite color. After that it was off and on till I was twelve when my last store bought pony was purchased. She was Coco Berry from Toys R Us. My childhood herd was mostly Rainbow ponies and so soft ones.

My user name is a nod to my favorite pony which I never owned till I was an adult. As for posting here I've been a member since 2009.

@ Sky Rocket Sammie - I meant to say it before but I really like your sig image of the amazing Sky Rocket. She was one of my childhood ponies who I chose because I couldn't find Twinkler, but I came to really love her (and so did my sister, so we later had to find one for her too so she stopped stealing mine) xD.

The only image I have online for me as a child at present seems to be this one from my montage of old writing and stuff:

With Lullabye Nursery, of course, aged maybe six. I think it was 88.

I have a few other images but my family don't like me posting images of them online, so they don't get uploaded. Off to see if I have any more that don't contravene that...

Edit to add: I found or cut about a few, including the one with Baby Blossom who used to come places with me :D

The last one was Easter, probably 92 I think. I cut her out but in the original photo my sister was sitting to the right and she was very jealous that I got Sweet Notes that day. Another pony we since had to get for her as well as she never let Mum forget it!

All my other pictures have uncuttable other family members or friends in, so I can't post them.

I can't remember if I posted here already but in case I didn't I'll post.  I was born in 1984 so I was two years after MLP first began.  I don't think I even watch the show until early 90's, because before that it was lots of Nick Jr. and Barney, etc.

I remember being at Woolworth's and my Mom telling me to pick out a pony and I picked Princess Royal blue because I liked her colors and I asked if I could pick out a baby too and she had me pick out teeny tiny baby little whiskers because she said she was pretty.  I know that sounds weird that my Mom had me pick out but she kept hinting at me to pick that one and back then I was so eager to please my parents.  I mean I am still just not as much.

Later on my Mom's used-to-be friend from work had two daughters who would come over to our house sometimes and one of them brought over several ponies for me to pick from that she didn't want anymore.
They were all G1's obviously.  I think that brought my total to 6 or 7.  I remember they had one of the giant newborn ponies too and I think one of the fashion fillies with lip gloss inside the symbol.  I really wanted one of those giant newborns but never got one.

When I was around 14 we were moving to another state and I gave my ponies to a little girl who I would play with sometimes in my neighborhood.  She was a few years younger than I was.  I thought I was too old for them.  We eventually moved back to the state I live in now and had forgotten I gave away my ponies and regretted it, not for the ponies themselves but mostly for the memories I had with them.  My Princess Royal Blue had grass stains on her hooves from my playing with her in the grass so much.

I did! Blossom was my first pony, and I remember picking her out at the now-defunct Nichol's department store. My parents gave me the Show Stable for a birthday gift, and I saved up my pennies to buy the Waterfall playset, but had just a handful of ponies: Blossom, Applejack, Bow Tie, Moondancer, Powder, Starshine, Sprinkles, Megan & Sundance, Baby Blossom, and Lemon Drop. I still have a few of my childhood ponies left. :)

I did but second-handidly.  I was born in '87 so I don't really remember the 80s obviously, but I did have a herd of approximately 10-20 ponies and played with them endlessly during the 90s.  My mom says that she is pretty sure that I did get ponies straight from the store, however, I do not remember that at all.  I did find a picture with one of my older brothers holding Gusty at Christmastime so maybe she was thinking of that.  I did have Gusty in my collection, so I am guessing it was actually his.  The only MLP related items I remember (somewhat) taking out of packaging as a kid was the Persian My Little Kitty and 2 sets or so of petites.  I really wish I could remember seeing them in the toy aisles!

Most of my ponies came from garage/rummage sales, flea markets and thrift stores.  I can specifically remember getting Locket, Baby Shady, Creamsicle, Medley, and Tropical Breeze this way.  My maternal gramma would also look for them for me and my younger cousin; we would each pick some out by taking turns.  I was always so jealous of my cousin's collection because she got her older sister's whole collection as hand-me-downs.  Her collection was considerably bigger than mine as it was her sister's favorite toy when she was little.  She had the Nursery, Baby Bonnet School of Dance, and lots of ponywear and accessories.  Her sister also had the Sweet Shoppe and Show Stable but those were at our gramma's for some reason (as were many of my brothers' and cousins' vintage toys like Star Wars, MotU and PoP, etc) so I could play with those anytime I was there, which was a lot.  I actually recently found a picture of myself playing with some ponies and the Show Stable there.

Minus the occasional squabble with my cousin over who got which pony, I have may happy memories.  At one point though, as I got older and was focused more on 90s toys like Puppy in My Pocket, LPS, my dollhouse, Grand Champions, Kitchen Littles, and Puppy/Pony/Kitty Surprise, I "lost" them for awhile as my mom was constantly putting things that she did not want in the house in plastic garbage cans and storing them in the attic of the shed/clubhouse.  Thankfully, I found them at the bottom of a bin one day, minus a few like Firefly and Heart Throb.

When G2 came out I was a tween and after the first year, started the "I am to old for ponies" phase at which time I gave my cousin all of my ponies G1 and G2.  My freshman year of high school I really regretted it and asked to have them back, and luckily she agreed.  I then collected intermittently (including G3 my senior year of high school) until my senior year of college when I jumped back into full time collecting again.

My ponies are some of the only toys I remember playing with (next to my Jurassic Park toys) and fill me with joy. I don't know about you guys, but when I find a MLP from my childhood, I get that feeling again from when I was a kid and I cherish it.

I love seeing these childhood pictures! I also grew up with G1s, although sadly I only caught the last of the U.S. line and bought only a handful new from stores -- some of the sparkle babies, Baby Sea Princess, Baby Pineapple, the teeny tiny babies (I especially loved my two "twin" Baby Honeypies.) But I did receive many older G1s secondhand as well. I had about 50 G1s, I think, growing up, and I have so many happy memories of playing with them as a child.

Here I am with a birthday present (I think I'm around four here?)

No, not strange at all. Although I got many of mine second-hand, I did get a few of my herd from stores. Yet, I only have a couple G1 store memories.  One particular memory that eludes me: I know my grandparents bought me SS Paradise at Toys R Us, and I remember being in the car with her on the way home, but I can't recalling picking her out or seeing the other So Softs.

The world moves on around me
still I cling to the past
hold dearly to to my little ponies
to make those freedoms last

That's a really beautiful poem! Thank you for sharing :)

G1 will always be my favorite. I haven't really been active in the community for the last five years or so. I had to finish up on school, then I moved halfway across the country, bought a house.... and so on. Five years can go by in the blink of an eye! My first pony was Night Glider. My mom got her for my birthday when I was 3 or 4. Most recently this weekend I found the poseable G1 vinyls at my local books a million. The proportions are somewhat strange but it's cute and I'll buy another at some point. :)

I stopped collecting shortly before I moved, and was saving up for a house,  I found my herd in the attic then found this place.

I was born in '83 and have been collecting since I was old enough to know the plastic ponies I loved could be purchased (according to my mother). I've never stopped, despite the peer pressure/family pressure/social pressure. Mom eventually gave up, since none of her "You're far too old to be collection" speeches worked, and now supports the fact that they make me happy, even if my requests for ponies every birthday/Christmas are met with eye rolls (and no new ponies).

I don't remember which was my first pony, but I do know that I am the original owner of my Party Gift Pack, Bootsie and Tootsie, Baby Fleecy and Baby Woolly, and Baby Sea Princess. There are probably others that should be in that list, but those are the ones I definitely remember. We would go to the second hand stores and I would go through the bags of toys, looking for bags of ponies to add to my collection. I would scan flea markets for any bright plastic or nylon hair. I would insist on renting either My Little Pony specials or The Last Unicorn whenever it was my turn to choose. To this day, both my brothers (one's a rocket scientist, the other's a computer support specialist) can sing the Sea Pony song from Rescue at Midnight Castle (and it amuses me SO much).

I would set the VCR to record the Disney channel when it was on free preview to get access to the My Little Pony tv show.  I loved going to my grandparents' house, because they had that channel and I didn't have to record anything. I had the sticker book for My Little Pony: The Movie. I still might, and I think I was only missing 2 stickers to have it complete... I'll have to look for that now.

I will never give up my ponies. I'd go without internet first. I've collected and played with them through everything life's thrown at me. And I'm so glad there are others who've been collecting as long as I have (some even longer)!

This thread warms my heart  :lovey:

My ponies are some of the only toys I remember playing with (next to my Jurassic Park toys) and fill me with joy. I don't know about you guys, but when I find a MLP from my childhood, I get that feeling again from when I was a kid and I cherish it.

JP toys?! Yassssss!!!!

...I mean, I remember those fondly :)

Yay!  I'm not the only one who taped episodes from the Disney Channel. My dad used to tape them for me while I was in school.

And maybe someone can answer this: When the series originally ran, was it on weekday mornings? I seem to remember episodes being on at 7:00 or 8:00a.m. as I was getting ready for preschool.

Oh Shatyr that's great that you never stopped collecting!

I was born in 87 so I knew the end of the G1 line. I didn't had much growing up, my first one was Clover and I remember seeing the show on tv. But I was too little to remember much I think. Then I thought I was too old for ponies and didn't ask for them, even if I wanted more ^^;

I remember not seeing them in stores older, I think the first line had been discontinued in France. (never knew the g2 actually, it came out when I was no longer looking at toys in stores I think)

Now I only found two of my childhood ponies, I think we gave the others. But I'm really glad to be here with everyone =)

Born in 1989. I remember when I was three I was diagnosed with type one diabetese. I was in hospital, when they discharged me from hospital one of the nurses brought me baby lemon drop as a going present along with a VHS copy of  My Little Pony Return of Tambelon.

I still have my very first G1, Swirly Whirly.

Later I collected all the other Sundae Best ponies because I loved Swirly so much.

Oh gosh, I loved my childhood MLPs.  I had a herd of about 20, but my brother had a collection too, so we shared a lot of each other's ponies.  All of my friends had them too.  We'd take them to school with us, and I remember giving them as gifts at birthday parties a few times.  I have the distinct memory of losing one of my baby ponies' yellow duck comb behind our car's back seat and crying for hours, lol.  Considering how much I loved those toys, you'd think I'd still have my childhood collection.  Unfortunately, they went missing when we were moving house, and I never got over it.  Once I started collecting again, I started with ponies that I remembered owning as a kid.  All these years later I still wonder where my poor ponies ended up.

*raises hand, jumps up and down* "Me, me, me!"

I grew up with G1 ponies. I was born in 1985, so by the time I was old enough to remember it was nearing the end of G1. But I do have some memories of seeing G1s in stores and my parents buying them for me, and unwrapping ponies as birthday or Christmas gifts. I also have memories of seeing some ponies in garage sales, even back then. I remember my childhood collection vividly because I played with them all the time! I even had a G1 themed birthday party one year, I'll have to see if I can dig up the photos some time. I also remember watching the cartoon on TV and renting the movie & the specials from Blockbuster. I had G1 sheets, a G1 game, and a few G1 plushies. The game & the plushies are actually all I have left from my childhood collection, my mom gave all my ponies and playsets away when she decided I was "too old" for ponies.

I did! I lost my own ponies but my sister kept a lot of hers and shared them with me the other year.

She gave me Braided Beauty, Gypsy and Wildflower and her Perufme Puff Palace.

My life is very lacking in mesh bows!

I grew up with them! I have lots of very good memories with them! I remember being so excited when my mom went shopping and I got to come with! Be it Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Pamida or Alco! I would run right back to the toy isle and droll over them all! I saw so many that I wanted! I was lucky enough to get a few time to time. Most of the time I had to choice between a pony of food so I picked food! I was pretty sad when the G1 came to an end and the G2 started to show up in the stores. I just was not a big fan of there skinny little bodies.

I also had an aunt that was six years older then me. When she lost interest in her ponies she gave them to me. I was so excited! But I had a naughty streak come threw me and I gave all of my ponies a hair cut! Along with my cat, cousin and myself! LOL  Those ponies will be getting new hair pretty soon!

I asked for ponies for my birthday and did get some! I still remember those parties also! :)

My last few years of collecting G1 ponies I took very good care of them all. I still have them and with original curls in there hair also!

I will always love those G1 ponies! :)  <3

Yep! My first ponies were a whole bunch of G1s that were handed down from a totally awesome friend of the family, so those were the ones I grew up with and the toys I played with most. They frequently had some very strange adventures; it'd start out fairly normal with them putting on a concert or a talk show but Kid Logic crept into it and before you know it, there would be pony chaos on a grand scale. :P

Yeah a senior citizen conversation....hahaha just kidding we are not that old. Sigh the G1 days. As a kid I was drowning in ponies. I loved them and that is all I wanted...even at 10. All but 10 went into a box to find a fate in my moms burn pile. So I am trying to find all the ones I gre up with. My only play set was the perm shop, I was talked out of that to donate it to a needy kid...sadly it was a family friend who played the heart strings of my mom and me. Sigh it was tossed out by the family friend...wow I have a tragic pony past...man you would think I would give up...fast forward to now....if I get time home alone, I break out some ponies and play with them like I did at 6 years old. Swirly Whirly was my special needs pony. She was like the friendliest and loving, but was not very smart. The babies always loved her, but the adult were afraid she would do something to them. She was lost in the fire....and I felt like I treated her like the adult ponies until I found her again....funny how one can feel guilty from their imagination of the past. I am stuck in my in laws basement so I don’t get much play time. My dream castle is in storage and I pray it is ok. I want to do more photo stories with them. One of the mod..Ringlets (I think) did amazing photo stories...I so loved them:)

Ok I better get off this rocking chair and be productive.

I was born in *coughs* 1975 *coughs* so erm...quite a bit older than some posters on here, lol!

So yep, definitely grew up with G1. Got my first one, Applejack, when I was 8 and my second, Sunlight, after that. Sadly, at age 9 or 10, my parents deemed me "too old" for MLP and refused to buy me any more. And so, they languished in the attic until I left Uni...

When I did leave, I went straight back home and had a mooch about in the attic. Sure enough, there, at the bottom of a dusty old box, were AJ and Sunlight, still in perfect (almost) condition. They came down from the attic and have never been back there since.

Now I have my own home, I have an entire spare bedroom dedicated to ponies, so they live in there, along with the 400+ (approx) ponies I now have as an adult collector.

But, it all started with Applejack...

I was born in 1990 and I played with G1 ponies, even remember buying some from the store! I have no memory of ever even seeing G2 or G3 ponies. Only G1. Even at daycare they only had G1 ponies, I remember that so well! I tried to hide them from other kids because they played too rough with them.  :lookround:

This was in Finland, so that explains it I guess, everything came here years later.

I have 2 pony memories I remember really well. I remember getting Baby Sapphire as a christmas present, and then I remember picking Pina Colada from the store.  :inlove:

Yup! ^.^  Can't recall when I started getting ponies, buy my earliest memory for ponies was getting Dream Castle for Christmas - but I knew I was getting it, as our parents didn't hide gifts very well that year! (My brother and I was rather mischevious. ;) ). My brother helped me put it together, and I loved the show and looking for new ponies at Children's Palace. I remember seeing the movie when it was in theaters -  seeing the flutterponies when they come to fight the smooze on a screen that huge was awesome! I remember seeing the boys in the store for the first time and asking my best friend if they were really MLP toys - they were so different! Eventually wound up with all of them, though I never did get the Apple and Bouquet families (though I have them now). The softies used to be displayed on clip strips, hanging by their loops; never got any of them, though. Then my parents bought ponies at TRU when they moved in across the street and CP closed as a result of lost business to them. I was so mad about CP closing! It was the first toy-centered store I ever knew, you know? The last pony I remember seeing in the store is Movie Firefly. I kinda wish I'd looked more for Mimic, but I never saw her! My brother and I did have Locket, though; I can't recall having any other TE ponies, so I'll have to check hooves later.

I'm glad I managed to save my childhood ponies - for the memories, if nothing else! My brother and I used to play with them with his Transformers and Hot Wheels - we had fun! I still have the Headmasters Transformer we pretended Chief was (the colors matched up, so hey! ) I played with them a lot at my best friend's house too  - so many of our ccessories got mixed together! We tried sorting them out a few years ago, but I don't think we succeeded. C'est la vie. :)

Got back into ponies a few years ago when I saw some at a convention I was at, then I was introduced to customizing (which my brother and I had already done a bit of - Glory completely lost her symbol, so we gave her an Ankh; permanant marker, mind, but we were kids), found out about the international and nirvana ponies, and it was off from there! Now I'm slowly putting together the complete (USA) set - I know it's been done by folks before, so I should be able to manage it! Slowly. ^.^

I had one friend that I thought had all of the ponies back then! But then her dad was a Doc and they had a lot of money. He even had a bag phone while no one else had one. I remember going over there and playing with them. I was so jealous over her collection! To this day I have no idea what her name is now if married and were she lives. I also had a sitting that watched me for a few weeks. She also had them to! I stoled spike when I saw that she had him. Of course I gave him back and felt really bad over it! :(

I did. I was born in 1989 and has about 20-30 ponies in my childhood collection. When I was 16, I was staying at a friend's house one weekend and my Mum took all my ponies to a car boot and to her surprise, a 'man in a coat came and bought the whole box'. Yeah of course he did, because it was full of rare UK ponies!! I had Nurse Tenderheart with hat...all the UK cookery ponies, Rockin Beats with guitars, Jazzy with the original visor and walkman...makes me so sad to think of all the rare ponies that she sold so cheap, that I will never be able to own again!

I was very upset. But that's actually what got me into collecting - when I found out I went on eBay to try and buy all the ponies back, and that's when I found out their collectors value. I ended up buying a few back, and found a few of my original ponies in the garage that had escaped 'the cull' many years later but it still makes me sad to think my original childhood ponies that I treasured are all gone!
