Title: American Girl
Post by: Taxel on April 18, 2016, 07:16:24 AM
I know we have at least a couple AG collectors, is anyone else interested in a megathread? I've gotten suuuuper into AG this month and I've been dying to get into a community but AG seems really weird! The doll focused forum is closed for signups (which is only mentioned after signing up...) and the political forum doesn't seem to be very active with doll discussions I'm interested in.

I'll probably make an Instagram (even though the community seems to be mostly 9-14 year old kids I'll need to avoid, lol) and maybe a blog... but I'd love to just fawn over AG stuff with other collectors or fans!

We have an AG photo thread here:  Show me your Bitty Baby/American Girl collections (http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,370451.msg1427150.html#msg1427150).

I have 2 (Rebecca and a modern that needs some work;) I really should take pics.  :)

Been eyeing Mary Ellen online and in store.  She might be a gift to myself.

*waves*  hiiiiiiiiiiii!

At this point it is getting easier to tell people that I have collected AG dolls for over 20 years rather than tell you how many dolls I have and how much stuff I have for them... LOL

P.S.  Addy is retiring soon!  They have not announced it but they are hoping she quietly sells out so they can focus on Melody - the Detroit Motown 1960's AA girl.  :)  She is coming in July/August...

scarletjul yes you should buy Maryellen - I have her and she is so exuberant!  Makes me smile when I see her.  :)

Sadly the photo thread seems to have been locked ):

I'd love to see photos of your girls, scarletjul!

And I was thinking of you when I decided to make the thread, lovesbabysquirmy xD I remember seeing your threads pop up from time to time with your girls' new clothes and such.

I guess I'd consider myself "collecting" since um... the 5th? xD I've wanted an American Girl since I was like 7 or 8, and I've had three minis (Samantha, Kit, and Kirsten) since 2012. I also have a Springfield Collection girl and a box of handmade 18in clothes my granny gave me for my birthday last year.

I wanted Ivy when she came out but it wasn't a huge deal. Cecile blipped on my radar too but I've since decided I don't like her facemold + curls combination. And then there was Maryellen... I was really disappointed with her at first (as her stock photos appear blonde but her book cover is very much a redhead), but thanks to lovesbabysquirmy's owner photos I realized AG is just horrible at taking stock photos! She's a real redhead, with my same hair color, something AG has never done before! I've always kind of been upset over their lack of actual redheads. She doesn't have freckles, which disappointed me, but its not the biggest deal ever.

Something happened and I just sort of... became obsessed this month. I've been reading every AG blog I can find, attempting to find AG communities, watching an endless stream of videos on YT... its ridiculous, lol. And then I started to hardcore focus on Maryellen. I watched her little movie (which is SO cute omg) and looked through her Scrapbook. It turns out that Maryellen isn't just perfect because of her hair color, but her entire character is like... this mix of everything I love! Space, science, comic-making (which I don't do anymore, but did daily at her age), and she even goes to Yellowstone!!!! I'm obsessed with Yellowstone! I was thinking how awesome it would be to have a GOTY go to Yellowstone like, 2 days before I saw her scrapbook.

So yeah xD I'm doomed. If all goes well I'll be getting her for my birthday next month! I'm hoping to also get the Lori doll camper (http://www.target.com/p/lori-6-doll-camper/-/A-47989192) because its perfect for mini Maryellen. :D

I ramble too much, so here's a few photos of my girls!

Sadly I don't have any photos of my Springfield girl, since her lips badly need repainting (I can't stand the color), but she's a redhead of course! Next time we're in LA I want to take her to the AG store and get her hair done.

My eventual wishlist is Maryellen, Ivy, Mia, and Samantha (with her old meet outfit) for sure. Maybe Sonali (or the darker dolls without hair with the Sonali mold), Nellie, #37 (my haircut :P), and/or #61. And all the mini dolls I can get my hands on!

Ahhhhhh.. Still loves me some American Girl.. Have you tried this forum? http://agplaythings.proboards.com/ It moves okay.. But, yeah, AG threads are strange; they'll stay active for a minute and then just fizzle off. Let's try to keep this one active so it doesn't get locked up!!

I'm actually pairing down this year as OOAK AGs don't seem to do as well as I had originally hoped. And my studio work is what drives my collections. Always has, prolly always will! I still plan on working on several dolls and hopefully the market for artdolls will pick up. :)

I have about five dolls in what I consider my "permanent collection." Josephina, OOAK Josie, an Asian JLY whose number escapes me, Addy (waiting on OOAK) and Kaya (waiting also.) I have several other dolls that I need to rehome including Sage, Samantha and.... maybe Kristen. And bits and pieces of dolls here and there! XD

AGPT is the forum I tried to sign up for on the 5th ): After going through the signup process there's a message about how they're unfortunately not accepting members at the moment and eventually all new accounts will be rejected. I looked all over the forum itself (what I can view, anyways) and there's no mention of it anywhere. If any AGPT members can find information on what's going on with that I'd really appreciate it. It seems like the most lively and populated AG forum so I'd love to get in.

I've always loved your OOAKs kCherry! I was just drooling over Elsa and Anna earlier this morning actually. Its a shame they don't do so well. I love the way you customize them! They're not too mature, like some customs I've seen, but they really stand out. I'd love to see your take on an 80's historical ;D

I'm excited to see what you do with Addy and Kaya! I never liked Addy as a kid but I've been seeing her with her hair down and redressed a lot lately. I like her a lot better with it down! I'm sure she'd make an excellent custom base.

Do any of you guys like the movies or books? I've been working my way through the movies I can find on Netflix and I want to check for the books next time I'm at the library. I want to start collecting them (the books, that is), because I don't have enough on my wishlist already >.>

AGPT doesn't have very many full-time moderators at the moment, so they did shut down registration.  And there have been a number of uncomfortable moments for the moderation team that is very part-time and doesn't really have the time to deal with it.    There were a number of hot-button conflicts in the past six months that really upset a lot of people...  :(  So yes, sadly, no new members.

But it's not that busy there - it's been quiet this past week.  So yes, let's talk AG all you want here!

Its a shame the AG fandom seems to be such a mess. I've never been into something that has an impossible to reach community before ): I even tried signing up for the other forum I found, before poking around and not seeing much doll discussion that interests me, but that was ignored as well. In fact, a few people just had their accounts approved in the past couple days while mine remains rotting. :/ The community definitely does not seem very welcoming, haha.

I really want to get these (http://www.target.com/p/our-generation-70-s-roller-doll-outfit/-/A-17213634) two (http://www.target.com/p/our-generation-retro-skater-doll-outfit/-/A-17213630) outfits for Maryellen, mostly for those skates! The 70s outfit will immediately go to my basically-cousin who just got her first AG doll a couple years ago, but the diner outfit is pretty cute. It would probably look pretty nice on my Springfield girl (who really needs a name!).

If you can't get into AGPT, there's also AGC (American Girl Collectors) - they're fairly active and are open to new members.

Sadly the photo thread seems to have been locked ):

Oh, whoops! I remembered posting there before, but hadn't realized it was so long ago that the thread had been locked!  I guess it is time for a new thread then!

That's the other forum I tried to join. My signup was ignored and I don't know what I did wrong :/ The only thing I could guess is I forgot to fill out every optional part since I was tired, but other recently accepted members didn't either. So I really don't know... But there doesn't seem to be much doll-focused discussion I'm interested in (especially when it comes to photography) and very few active members so its not the end of the world. It would be nice to get in and have something at least but oh well. Its a real shame the AG community as a whole is so exclusive.

That seems to happen a lot, haha. Looking through all the "bookmarks" in my sig every single one (except this one I just replaced an old one with) is locked. Such a shame, but I guess that's partially on me for not keeping them up. Especially since I was likely the most active poster in a couple of them at least.

Jess looks so cute in her kimono! And I love Elizabeth's outfit! I don't think I've seen anyone use Pita and Josefina as sisters but I love it. I've always had a weakness for Pita but that makes me want Fina too.

I don't have many photos of my girls, but here's the best of the rest I've got of the minis.

I'm gonna bring my Springfield girl (who I figured out a name for!) along on our trip down to Mesa Falls today so she can have nice "introduction" photos. Of course, they'll strategically have her lips hidden :P I've gotta get some paint so I can do a quick and dirty temporary repaint to get her by until I can afford a real repaint for her.

Aw thank you! <3 It really is! They're the perfect size to hide out among flowers and plants. I don't think that'll be as easy to achieve with Maryellen xD

Speaking of redheads, say hello to Lena (len-uh)! :D Unfortunately I didn't get the shot I really wanted since the photos on Google that were supposedly of the falls, uh, weren't. But she photographs pretty well anyways! I'm so in love with her hair color! I want to repaint her lips/teeth (poorly >.>) when I can and have my aunt cut her hair, since the bottom portion is a big mess. Eventually I want to get her professionally repainted, restuffed/strung, dehaired, and bought a shiny new wig (same color and probably same style).

I love AG!  Sadly I haven't been giving my girls the attention they deserve recently though (I've been on a BJD/Nendo kick), but every now and then I stop to fix their wig and change their clothes.  Here's a pic of my girls:

Kaia (Somali mold), Izzy (GOTY Isabelle), and Ivy.  I purchased Kaia on ebay and decided her stock wig was beyond repair, so I ended up re-wigging her.  She looks so much cuter with those long locks!

Kaia looks gorgeous with her new wig! The long hair really suits her and the style is so cute. Its definitely not helping my Sonali mold desire xD

And thank you so much! <3

AG minis really do make great traveling companions, Hervoyel! I took Samantha with me on a trip to California once but I only took one picture of her in Vegas. And I love the outfit on the first fullsize doll (Cecile?).

scarletjul, Beckie is so cute! Is that one of Sam's dresses? It looks perfect on her.

Sounds like you have a nice collection, Olympus! I'm quite a fan of most of those girls, haha.

My biggest struggle with my dolls, and has been for the past 10 years, is that I seriously NEED a dollhouse for them.  It's disgusting how many boxes are piled on bins on boxes.... I barely get to enjoy them because they go in and out of containers and they have no setup.... I take them out to make clothes and then they go back into storage....

But really what do you do when you have such a diverse collection LOL?

If I had the space, I would definitely set up a dollhouse for my girls!  I just love the look of different scenes set up in each room, and some of the AG dollhouses I've seen online are beyond amazing!  Lovesbabysquirmy, you need to take a group shot of your dolls one day for us! ^_^

Instead of buying a dollhouse, which will cost no less than $200 (can you believe it?), I bought some 24" deep x 48" wide  x 72" high shelving unit to use as a dollhouse. I got them at Home Depot, but I think Walmart has them too. They're by the company Edsal and they were $80. Maybe you could use those and save some money?

Hi everyone! I recently gotten bit by the AG bug aswell! It started when a lady down the street seen the dolls I was restoring(Monsters, and Disney Animators), and asked me if I would be interested in fixing some dolls she had gotten from a flea market. I ended up tightening arms and legs, fixing hair(Rebecca reaallyyy needed TLC for her hair!), and washing stains. And along the way, I fell in love with the classic head mold.

And as payment for all the work done on those pretties, she sent this lady to live with me:

Great thread, Taxel! I thought of starting a new one myself, but you beat me to it. ;)

I grew up with AG dolls; Bitty Baby was my first, as you can see by the various scratches on her head. Part of me wants to repaint her, but at the same time I think they add character! She was a child's toy, after all.

And here are the rest of my girls I've been given or purchased over the years - the one on the far right, above Marisol, is a Gotz model. Her name is Charlotte. c:
(I have many accessories that aren't pictured here.)

I would love to add Kaya, Kit, Elizabeth, Cecile, Rebecca, Julie and Ivy to my collection, but I don't have the money or space at the moment. I actually ended up selling a few Bitty Baby accessories + Kaya's horses when we moved, and I miss the latter. Maybe I'll replace them someday...

I know what you mean, lovesbabysquirmy. I don't have many bigger dolls (and most are easy to reach right now) but pretty much all of my dolls are packed away because I don't have any other choice. I've got so many of those decorative boxes from Michael's full of dolls. I'd love to get more display cases/shelves with glass doors. A big one for American Girls would be amazing! I love the setups that can be done with them. I imagine they're a lot easier to set up than the teeny tiny little accessories for stuff like MH!

They look really good Shugahime! You did a great job :D And congrats on your Maryellen!

You collection is lovely, Sundown! I just finished reading Samantha's books so I'm really partial to your Nellie. She looks so cute with her big bow! I hope you're able to get Kaya's horses again. They were always a favorite of mine when I was little so I can see why you'd miss them.

Yesterday we went to check exactly what the final cost for my Maryellen would be and wow... I didn't expect $20 shipping! I'm used to stores absorbing some of the cost into products so shipping is easier to deal with. How often do they do coupons/sales? I might wait a bit once we get the money so we can get a better deal since there won't be enough time for her arrive before my birthday trip to Yellowstone. I don't want to have to skip her brush 3:

Anyways, I've been raiding the American Girl section at the local library. Does anyone else like the books? I'm reading Lea's right now and I've gotta admit I love her character. She sounds like me with her camera, haha. And now I want her sloth pet and camera even more! I picked up Melody's book too and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Just recently got back into American Girl dolls. I was really into them when I was younger, then I got into Monster High and concentrated on that for awhile. But I recently got a job and now that I'm making money, I feel like I can afford American Girl and Monster High (and of course all the other dolls I collect).

I currently have 4 dolls: Lanie, Ivy, Julie, and McKenna. I bought Lanie's starter set back in 2010, Ivy and Julie were Christmas gifts, and McKenna was a birthday gift. Unfortunately, I played with them really roughly, so Ivy lost her head (oops... I plan on sending her to the Doll Hospital), and the other girls hair are frizzy and dry, even after I washed Lanie's.

Anyway, my Dad and I were going to make a dollhouse for the girls, but we ended up buying some shelves at Home Depot instead to use as rooms. I decorated it with the furniture I already had, like Kit's bed, an Our Generation Bathtub, and a beanbag chair. Then went out and got the Our Generation Gourmet Kitchen at Target (which I was really lucky to find since it's retired). I've got my eye on some other furniture:

I also just ordered Kit's accessories and dog, Grace, on eBay. They should be here soon. I really want Addy, since  I'm a Civil War buff and also because rumor has it they're retiring her soon. Other dolls on my wish list are Rebecca, Lea, Maryellen, and Truly Me #59. Can't wait till my birthday!

AG has been weird about their sales and free shipping recently.  The cheapest option at this point is to call your local Costco and ask if they have the American Girl gift cards.  here is the SKU:  1038806   The cards are $75 for a $100 card if I remember...

Of course you need a membership or a friend with one to buy for you @ Costco but the reduced price on them basically makes any order 20% off without any restrictions. The sales have all been restricting certain items!

What a coincidence, respositob! I had planned this to be a Monster High year for me but that didn't even last until my birthday xD You dollhouse shelves sound awesome! I love that OG kitchen and I was drooling over the just the other day. Are all those furniture sets you're eyeing OG? I may need that couch!

I thought their sales were kind of weird but I wasn't sure how normal that is for them. I'm still bummed I miss Maryellen's collection sets and I doubt she'd specifically go on sale again so soon. We actually have a Costco about an hour away and make the drive from time to time for stuff, so fingers crossed! That's a really great deal! Thank you, lovesbabysquirmy!

Actually, only the laundry room set is by OG. I found the rest of the furniture on Amazon. If you're interested in buying the couch, it $75. I think that's a little pricey, but it would make a great addition to my shelves/dollhouse. I think I'll be saving up for it!

Ooo, that's a smart idea! When I was poking around I just looked for official OG and My Life As stuff. At that price though I'd probably just save up for Maryellen's couch. I was thinking that one would work as a good refurbishment to have an alternative, but not at that price xD

I was looking some more and found an official Journey Girls lounge set that's $64.99. I little less expensive and it comes with a nice coffee table and little footrest thingy (aren't they called ottomans or something like that? IDK.). The cushions are also purple, which is my favorite color, so that's also plus. The only problem is that it's out of stock. Maybe my local store will have it though. You never know; the OG Gourmet Kitchen was out of stock and my store had tons of them!

Well.... I decided to just START making the dollhouse - we have enough shelves and wood and such...
It will eventually have walls and be enclosed with UV-filmed plexiglass so this is really just first draft:

That includes Maryellen's Diner, the OG kitchen set, the Journey Girls kitchen and the My Life Ice Cream Stand... the CanadaPost mailbox is a piggy bank, the shelf came from Value Village and the OG horse with poseable limbs - I kept the box!  Now I just need more seating for outdoor patio area, some more definition to the stables, and to add the second level which will likely be the dress shoppe!

I love the start of your dollhouse, lovesbabysquirmy! I really like the way you set up the kitchens with the diner. It looks awesome and really fleshes out that poor little diner kitchen, haha.

We looked around a bit and they don't have AG gift cards at our Costco, but they do have them in California where our families live. (And even at the one in my hometown which is just... completely baffling to me.) But look what I found in my email today!

I love the look of Mary Ellen's set with the pastel stripes!  Your doll house looks like it's coming together LBS!

I'm tempted by the FREE SHIPPING deal going on right now, but I'm trying to save for more BJDs! >_<  I've had my eye on Lea since she released though.

Well.... I decided to just START making the dollhouse - we have enough shelves and wood and such...
It will eventually have walls and be enclosed with UV-filmed plexiglass so this is really just first draft:

That's quite the project! I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

I love your pictures of Maryellen, Shugahime! She fits in so well with Gooliope.

Me too, lovesbabysquirmy! I'm so thrilled. That was the last thing I expected to happen. We'll be able to skip the gift card now (we'd have to rely on a not-in-any-way-reliable relative to pick it up) so hopefully Maryellen will be on her way home soon! My boyfriend has been pretending to be sneaky but I think he's about halfway so we should definitely make the sale.

But it was a bit too soon... a card from my granny arrived today with enough money to buy Maryellen's birthday mini xD So once I get a couple more bucks for shipping I'll order her too!

More dolly things later!  Congrats on the gift card!

I didn't order anything... I have far too much as it already is.  The ONLY thing I want from AG right now is the GOTY Lea Clarke's White Festival Outfit, or whatever it's called?  The white and green dress and the gold belt?  But I am waiting patiently for it to go on sale in December at the Indigo/Chapters boutique...  last year they cleared out all the GOTY at between 20-30% off in the final weeks of the year.  It's $48 CAD and that is just insane to justify at the moment, with our dollar being so low....

Wow! I had no idea there were so many AG fans on here. I didn't realize that AGPT wasn't taking any new members right now..... I've been on there since 2009.

I got Molly in 1993 when I was 12. She was my one and only until I found Kirsten at Goodwill in 2009. That got me back into AG and I now have 13 dolls. Maryellen is my newest girl.

I was eyeing that dress too! Its really cute. I hope it goes on sale for you! The price is a bit high for me too.

I love your photos of Maryellen, sailorstitch! I think I saw a couple when I was browsing reviews of her collection on AGPT.

Also, I was checking out Barnes & Noble's shipping costs since our location cleared out all books except for Mysteries (and a few really random leftovers... like a Meet Addy o.O) and all dolls except for Lea. They have a lot of mini dolls (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/American+Girl+Dolls) on sale, up to $10 off!

I'm debating whether I should put off Birthday Maryellen and grab two minis or mini ME and her 2nd book. That's a really really good deal, but I worry that Birthday ME won't last until Christmas.

I'm holding off on all the LE minis until closer to the end of the year. They did LE minis in 2011 for the 25th anniversary. They were poor sellers and went on DEEP discount at the end of the year. Honestly, I'm surprised that they're doing it again.

Really? I had no idea. I thought maybe this was something they just did each year to give the minis more of the fullsize wardrobe. In that case I might just go for the two minis, since if we buy the minis and book from B&N there's no shipping cost for ordering that much... the $5 AG shipping on tiny stuff is kind of excessive. I'm still not used to it at all.

Here's the 25th anniversary minis.
http://www.agplaythings.com/25thAnniversary/25thAnniversary.html

I have Kirsten, Addy, Molly, Kit and Cecile. I also got my BFF Sam and my mom Kaya. I bought most of them at full price and was kicking myself at the end of the year. By Nov most were on clearance for $11.

Well, it looks like the Indy pop up store is reopening early! I wasn't expecting it to be back until Oct, (IF it came back) but it's looks like it's reopening on July 1st!  :green: I can go to Melody's release without going all the way to Chicago!

I'm really just in awe. I've never seen a real fullsize AG in person before, let alone held/touched one. She has such a good, solid weight and her vinyl is so smooth and just feels so nice and expensive. I'm completely and totally in love with her. She's so beautiful, and her hair is RED! Just like mine was when I was younger! Her neck seam is a little off (I'm really wishing I had her pearls, haha!) but that's an easy fix when we get the courage, isn't it?

Its pretty obvious I'm not at all used to photographing such a big doll, or a doll with these proportions! I foresee a lot of practice this month, haha.

I may or may not be selling off everything I can to make a big outfit order. I'm honestly half considering saving for Melody, since I could probably do it if all this stuff we found sells, but I don't want to get my hopes up. I love her character and the girl on the book cover, but her doll stock photos are so meh. I want to see owner photos first. Plus, Maryellen really does need every one of her outfits, haha!

You got a lovely Maryellen!!! Her bangs look really nice. Those bangs can vary a LOT. And her neck gap isn't that bad. I've seen far worse. If you can't afford her accessories yet, it's not that hard to make a necklace for her.

Thank you both! <3 I got a little worried after reading the doll review thread on AGPT, since weird bangs were mentioned a lot. But thankfully she looks great! A few strands of bang hair are a little too long and need trimming, but otherwise they look super cute.

I just finished her first book and omg, its hard to describe how perfect she is!!! I may have put the book down immediately reached out to a seamstress about a 1950s Girl Scout uniform when I got to that part! I'm very excited :D

They have a lot of mini dolls (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/American+Girl+Dolls) on sale, up to $10 off!

Update on the B&N sale! They just added a 20% off one item code, BNSUNNY20, and it works on the minis so Maryellen is down to $12. I also found out that at least some of the American Girl books are save $5 on two (I have Maryellen #2 and Melody's in my cart). Plus $25 means free shipping, so all three of them together is only $27! That's amazing!

And you can pay with Paypal, so I know what I'm doing :D

Does the 20% off code work on the Lea mini?
Title: Re: American Girl
Post by: Taxel on May 31, 2016, 07:51:06 AM
It does! It takes her price from $15.20 to $12.16

The code is only for online orders and it ends on June 2nd. One thing I noticed was that if you add certain other discounted stuff to your cart (like buy 1 get 1 half off B&N collection or whatever its called, the $20-25 fancy cover books) it'll remove the code and claims you need a B&N membership to add it. I removed the items, restarted Chrome, and the code worked just fine for me when I checked out. I think their website is just poorly coded.

Placed my order! I got mini Lea and Lea's 3rd book. $3 short of FS, but I didn't want anything else right now. I also made a post over on AGPT since you can't.

Back at the beginning of the year Target mistakenly priced the mini Lea at $9.99 instead of $24.99. I missed out on that deal. :( And because of that deal, I haven't been able to bring my self to pay anything over $13-14. Mini Lea rang up for $11.91 for me! Thanks for the heads up on the code!!!!
Title: Re: American Girl
Post by: Taxel on May 31, 2016, 11:59:49 PM
Woohoo, congrats! :D I'm glad I was able to help.

I heard there was some glitch on the AG site a few months back where you could stack coupons and get $40 dolls. I died a little inside when I found that out, since we could've probably afforded that if we'd known, so I definitely understand.

I also ordered something else today xD A repro pearl choker on Etsy for Maryellen, to cover up her neck gap. I was gonna wait on it but its only $10 and I don't want the gap being so easily visible when we go to Yellowstone for the recreation of her trip. But now, no more spending! I found the most amazing non-AG doll ever and I've gotta save for her. I sort of wish I hadn't bought all this stuff recently, but at the same time its all been great deals and I know I won't regret them. I'm just freaking out over the doll, haha.
Title: Re: American Girl
Post by: sailorstitch on June 01, 2016, 07:41:49 AM
Oh, yes. The code stacking of Feb 2016..... That glitch was only up for a few hours at most.  There was a 20% off code, a 25% off code, a 30% off code and a free shipping code. People were able to stack all four codes! I missed out on that one too. Although, I'm not sure if I would've been comfortable cheating the system in that way.

A couple days later they released real one time use codes for those amounts. I ended up with two codes, one for 20% and one for 30%. The 30% one had a glitch of it's own. In the fine print it said that the codes could NOT be used on Lea's hut or Maryellen's diner. The 20 and 25 codes did not work on those items, but the 30 did! I got the diner for 30% off AND free shipping! With the two codes I got I knocked out most of my want list. I'm down to about 8 items now. :P

AG is TERRIBLE about sending out email codes - mostly you just have to share the info with others that you know are into dolls.  :)

Yeahhhhhhh considering the Canadian exchange rate right now, I can't order from the company at the moment - it's insane how there is no savings at all for me up here.  Even with some discount code or free shipping, with the dollar vs the dollar?  No savings at all.  I go to Chapters/Indigo and do the best I can with the limited-selection boutique... that's in predictable Canadian prices. Although despondently depressingly EXPENSIVE.  Can I confess that Maryellen's Diner cost well over $400 CAD by the time I lugged it through the store to my truck?  GAH!  At least I enjoy it every single day!

Oh, YES, it's awful! Some people get every email (like me), some people get an email now and then and other people never get an email no matter how many times they request it. It's the same with the catalogs too. Some people just can't get them no matter how many times they call and complain. Their whole IT dept is in the pits. Problems vary from person to person, but some people can't even order a doll from the website.

If you have your credit card info saved on AG's site, DELETE IT NOW!!!!! There have been a small handful of people that have had their info stolen from AG's site!

Ouch, that really sucks ): I wish AG wasn't so terrible with international orders. I've heard most places have to call in orders so its a huge ordeal most people would rather not (or can't) do.

On the flip side, I wanted to order some Maplelea stuff and wow, the shipping made a $23 item into a $54 one! I don't even want to think about how much the shipping would be on something bigger, like an outfit.

I greatly prefer the AG diner to the OG one. Mainly because it folds up. Plus I love the color! I was planning on buying it at full price and free shipping, but that 30% off pushed me to buy it a bit sooner than I planned.

I can appreciate that. I want to get the OG one and paint it just like Maryellen's (the stock OG color is terrible!!! What were they thinking?!). I saw this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWmLg5uiqMo) tutorial on it and it really convinced me. The AG one is nice, but its really empty for $275 imo. There's not much food or seating (one more booth would've been perfect to me), and the kitchen is super bare. I'm sure its really nice though, and I'd love to get my hands on the table and booth. Heck, I'd love to pick the whole thing up cheap on Craigslist once kids start getting bored of it! I just can't justify full price.

Oh what a cute sundae! I could probably make my own food to fill the diner with, but it would be annoying to have to get a bunch of dishes. I'd rather go OG so there's plenty of food to use until I get sick of it not being realistic enough xD

Good luck!! I'm really eyeing a pair of shoes. The other doll thing didn't pan out so next time I get a payment I'm buying Lea's sloth, the shoes, and maybe Maryellen's Play Outfit if a coupon comes out.

In other news, my Lori camper arrived yesterday! Its bigger than I expected (and the box was HUGE, more than twice as big as necessary) but its so cute. Absolutely worth every penny! I can't wait for mini Maryellen to arrive on Monday.

I have quite the collection (well my mother does anyways) of AG dolls. Addy was my first one, I bought her with my allowance for $80. I saved for months to buy her. Only doll line I ever took to which my mother went crazy buying stuff because of it. In general I'm a tomboy was all about hot wheel cars. Anyways I think we have all the original girls plus Kit & Kaya who were the *new dolls at the time. If I were to still collect I'd stick to the mini dolls. I don't have the space for the regular size and their price  oh inflation.

I do live near the factory though so we got most of our stuff at the outlet sale every year at a discount. I did go a few years ago for another member here who was getting out of ponies and sticking to AG and did a partial trade/ personal shopper deal.

sailorstitch - Oh I hope that's her swimsuit!!! Its absolutely adorable and I love the strawberry print. Not much cloth body would show under it too, which is another bonus. I don't list most of the AG, official or not, suits because the transition is so odd.

Ponyfan - Its really cute. I hope you're able to get them soon!

JazzMatazz - Sounds like you guys have a neat collection! And how lucky to live close enough to go to the outlet sale. That sounds awesome.

Mini Maryellen arrived quite a while ago and she's adorable! No good pictures yet, but at least I was able to get the in-box photo that was impossible with the fullsize.

Does that mean we're not getting them?  Because I will be so upset if not.  And all my dolly money will end up going to another company.  :(

Oh no! I really hope the preview is just wonky and they'll be available upon release, or shortly after ):

I poked around on FB and found this article (http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/childrens-products/toy-reviews/news/a38990/american-girl-new-dolls/) with their names, personalities, and better fullbody shots. (I'm not sure what the video says since I couldn't play it with sound.)

I didn't realize Willa, the redhead, has a hedgehog outfit!!!! I absolutely NEED her! I like Kendall's outfit, but her name is weird for me since I grew up with a male Kendall so I'm just picturing the doll as him, haha. I'm not big on dancing/dance-inspired stuff but Emerson's outfit is still cute, and I so love her name. I don't really like Camille or Ashlyn at all.

I doubt I'll be getting any of them. I really do not want to start a new scale of doll. The Asian girl is my favorite, but I like the outfit on the blonde doll best.

Guess where we went!

Our goal was to recreate Maryellen's Yellowstone trip as best we could (its so vague it was hard to come up with a 1 day itinerary), but that didn't really happen at all. We got a super late start so it was really late by the time we even got there.

We paused in Grand Teton National Park to enjoy my favorite place ever: Lakeview Picnic Area! Its got a little forest of Aspens, many of them carved. My 6'4" boyfriend was kind enough to hold Maryellen up and take a photo of her with the one dated 1955! Its harder to see now, but in my photos from a few years ago it seems to say "GyG 1955".

My biggest desire was to see Old Faithful for some photos, so we waited an hour! Unfortunately some incredibly rude tourists pushed in front of us and sat down on the edge, with feet off the boardwalk, right in front of a "do not go off the boardwalk sign" and ruined the shots we waited so long for on top of damaging the park. I'm still pretty furious about it. I guess next time we'll have to bring a bunch of bags to pile in front of us to keep selfish tourists away. I got some photos, but nothing impressive.

Next up we stopped at a random picnic area so I could get some shots of the RV, since I went to the trouble of bringing it! They're not great, but at least its something.

The sun wouldn't come back out so I gave up and we moved on. When it finally did reappear I asked to stop "somewhere pretty". We ended up at the edge of Lewis Lake! It was beautiful and absolutely perfect for water-loving Maryellen. I really wished I had flip flops so I could join her in the water.

I meant to practice taking photos of her a ton before we went but I ended up doing basically none of that because I just didn't feel like it. I was really worried it would be a wasted trip with terrible photos, but thankfully it seems like jumping in mostly blind was for the best! There's still some adjusting to do, and I really really need a better camera to get the photos of her I want to take, but at least I can accomplish something! I guess I just need more inspiring scenery :P

Thanks sailorstitch and Ponyfan! :D I had a lot of fun.

I'm so stoked about the Wellie Wishers!!! I expected them to be like, $75-80 at the very least. $60 is a crazy surprise! I'm gonna try really hard to get my hands on Willa and probably Emerson as well. That's too good a price to pass up. Unfortunately its complicated by the fact that I decided I'm completely in love with Lea and want her badly >.< Rebecca too, but obviously Lea is the priority since she's GotY.

I saw someone complaining on Facebook that Willa isn't a real redhead because she's called "strawberry blonde". Based on the stock photos, her hair is even redder than Maryellen's! Some people will find any reason to complain.

I think they're a little overpriced TBH (they're very similar to the Hearts for Hearts dolls which were half the price), but they're just too cute. I've posted a bunch of photos here (http://toyboxrevenge.blogspot.com/2016/06/out-of-box-wellie-wishers-ashlyn.html) if anyone's interested.  :)

Has anybody heard the rumor that 2017 will be a black goty AND the LAST goty?

http://livingadollslife.blogspot.com/2016/06/rumors-lots-of-rumors-1.html

I'm not a fan of this blog. Let's just say she has issues with not giving credit where credit is due. So I'm taking this rumor with a mountain of salt! But it is an interesting idea to discuss. How would you feel if the GOTY line stopped?

As long as we GET a DOC for the GOTY, I'm not going to cry when the line ends.  I don't collect it really myself, just parts I like, and the prices have skyrocketed past what I think is the value, so I haven't bought anything retail GOTY since.... uhhh.... Jess?  I can't say Nicki as she was bought for me.

They do, but the last two GOTY dolls (Isabelle and Grace) haven't sold to AG's expectations. This has resulted in fire sales at the end of the year and massive overstock problems. Lea is also selling, but not meeting expectations. AG has dug themselves a hole and they have to find a way out.

Post by: Taxel on June 26, 2016, 08:39:49 PM
I don't trust random rumors, but I hope we do finally get a DOC next year. The rumored one is cute so I'd be fine if she's the only, though of course I don't buy that as being the case :P But its a fun thought and I like the name Gabby.

As far as GotY ending, I don't really care? I just got into AG this year and started to "age out" originally around the time GotY happened (I don't remember any of the dolls, but I remember a special doll that I thought was based on a real girl who did something really awesome). So there's not really any specialness or nostalgia or even really much appeal with GotY for me. There's not much diversity in the line and there's only been one real redhead (Saige looks like she dyes her hair), and most of the past themes don't appeal to me at all (thankfully!). I really want Mia, Lea, and maybe Grace but most of the GotY dolls don't do anything for me (or are insanely expensive secondhand so I'm not even gonna entertain the thought).

If the line is cancelled I don't think I'd be very upset. I'd prefer more focus on the Historical dolls and fleshing out their worlds. I'd do anything for a "Welcome to [name]'s World" for more of the dolls! The modern dolls don't do as much for me, but there are some I really like. I'd love to see them flesh out the line with more options and diversity. But at the same time, I don't know. I like the idea of modern stories because those are easier to connect with. I have absolutely nothing in common with Samantha or Addy, but I loved Maryellen's story (and would've LOVED it as a kid) because we had things in common. Since she was more recent, I could identify and connect with the things in her story, like how she had at least one of the same Girl Scout songs I did. That was really cool. So I dunno. If GotY ends I hope they made some more modern-ish Historicals, like 80s/90s, even if they don't replace GotY with another modern line with books.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it end though, honestly. From what I've heard from longer term collectors GotY hasn't been doing great over the past few years. I've been checking AG's Facebook pretty often and a lot of parents seem really angry with Lea's movie. How crappy and poorly planned the premiere party things were and the actual movie itself. Some have said they won't buy Lea or regret buying her already. AG may have shot themselves in foot.

Thanks Taxel.  :)

I still need to get Maryellen's 2nd book. How were the reviews on Grace's movie? I've only seen parts of some of the movies but I caught Grace's on the Disney channel and it took me a while to figure out whether it was a movie or a reality show (when she in the cooking competition) . I didn't have access to an on screen cable guide at the time.

I don't know how Grace's movie was received, but I've seen some complaints about being "unrealistic" etc on other AG spaces. I watched it on Netflix a couple months ago and personally, I loved it. I thought it was really pretty visually and just a cute movie in general. Its a bit unrealistic, I guess, since its a movie and things magically work out, but its really not all that out there (especially compared to Lea's apparent "saving my brother from poachers" and "entering the jungle with no supplies", based on FB comments I've seen). Kids do compete in cooking shows and win so I think the complaints are suuuper nitpicky. No one wants to watch a movie of a completely average person that nothing extraordinary happens to. That would be really boring, especially for kids.

I haven't read Grace's books yet, but from what I can tell the movies seem to be different from the books in general? At least with Lea's and Grace's for sure. I watched the other AG movies on Netflix (GotY only), but I haven't read all of their books yet.

I also watched Grace's movie on Disney Channel. The cooking competition part rubbed me the wrong way, but I think that was more due to my personal childhood experiences. Thanks to my dad I can't even watch fictional stories of kids doing extraordinary things without feeling bad about myself.

I love love American Girl. I have collected since the 90's.   I have a massive collection of dolls, clothes, accessories and furniture.  It is all put away at this time because I have unruly cats.  I miss looking at all my things.  Even most of my dolls are in plastic crates.  I do so love them, but I have not bought anything for myself in a while.  My MIL did buy me a doll a year or so ago.  Oh and I was going to say that I really want the Mary Ellen doll badly.  I collect dolls from the 1950's and should have her, but my dog has a brain tumor and all my money is just gone.  No doll buying for me.  AG is so addicting.  Julie is my favorite because, she represents my childhood actually.  I tried to get everything from her line but I wasn't able to keep up after a while. hannaliten - They seem to fit size 10-11, if you haven't found it yet.

tulagirl - Wow, it sounds like you have an amazing collection! I hope you're able to enjoy it outside of boxes and crates more soon. I'm so sorry to hear about your poor pooch ): I hope they recover well and you're able to add Maryellen to your collection later. She's a really lovely doll!

sailorstitch - I saw that on Facebook earlier!!! I'm completely in love with it! Now that is a beautiful doll kitchen! I want it so badly but I know realistically its not gonna happen, and I wouldn't even have anywhere to put it. Though I do love drooling and dreaming!
Of course I'm also excited about seeing more photos of the new redhead. She doesn't do a lot for me personally so far, but that is some seriously red hair! I love it!

Has anyone on this thread mentioned the Costco gift cards yet? If you live near one you can sometimes get AG giftcards at a 20% discount, and then if you use them during sales it's even better.  If the Wellie Wishers are included in any sales that plus the giftcards could help make them more affordable.

Hey guys, a friend of mine wants to make me some AG clothes but really can't afford a full AG doll for herself even though she likes them. Do you guy know what knockoff line is closest in size? I can give her my Maryellen's measurements to help but she'd like to have a model to work off of. I have a Springfield doll too but I'm not sure if that's the closest option, although I'm pretty sure its the cheapest if you wait for a 50% off Michael's coupon.

I think Springfield dolls are very, very close - their outfits seem to be fully AG compatible, so they're probably a great choice (I know the MA and OG dolls at least have a different body shape, so I wouldn't go for either of those).

Title: Re: American Girl
Post by: Taxel on July 09, 2016, 04:58:50 AM
Thanks for the advice Hervoyel and lovesbabysquirmy! I'll pass it along to her :)

BryteStar - I'm definitely inexperienced with AG since I just got my first at the end of May, but maybe a brand new collector perspective might help you. I got a Springfield doll last year or the year before so I don't have personal experience with OG or JG, but based on what I've seen in stores OG dolls can't even begin to compare to AG. They're not as nicely sculpted or painted and I don't think I could ever own an OG doll now.

When I opened Maryellen, she was heavy. I was really shocked. My Springfield doll is super light (very badly understuffed and squishy) and Ellie just had this weight to her. She stands perfectly in her shoes and just feels like such a high quality doll. Her vinyl is so smooth and soft, the head sculpt is so well done, her paint is so realistic compared to the sometimes completely bizarre choices of OG. I really don't think a $20-30 doll would ever come close to being the same quality. I don't look at JG much in person so I don't have any real impressions there.

As far as off-brand clothes and accessories go, I have some OG clothes and accessories that I love. Things seem to a vary a bit, but overall I love the quality of OG clothes/accessories/playsets. Most of Ellie's shoes are My Life As and they're perfect. I'd never let her outside in her expensive AG shoes but with MLA, I don't have to worry.

I'd suggest trying to find a TLC American Girl doll on eBay or Craigslist. JG dolls seem to be around $30, and when I was poking around with a friend we found some TLC AG in a similar price range. So that might be a good option if you'd prefer AG and are okay with restoration/some flaws.

Here are some Toybox Philosopher reviews that may help:
Our Generation (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2013/06/our-generation-charlotte-doll-by-battat.html), Our Generation Retro (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2014/11/our-generation-retro-doll-joy-by-battat.html),  OG Doll & Playset (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2013/08/our-generation-jenny-and-her-gourmet.html), Journey Girls (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2013/11/journey-girls-dana-by-toys-r-us.html), My Life As (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2014/09/new-my-life-as-dolls-from-walmart.html), AG #29 (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2013/07/my-american-girl-29.html), AG Lea (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2016/01/american-girls-lea-clark-sloth-and.html)

Since I'm so new to all things dolly I don't think I'm ready for a TLC American Girl yet...but I'll keep one on my want list, in case I find one when I'm feeling more confident about being able to properly take care of her.  :P At least if I go for an OG doll, which is what I'm leaning towards (even though I like the JG faces better, argh) I know that her clothes will fit an AG in the future.

Thank you so much for all your help!

Journey Girls are nice quality but they have that slim body type with the vinyl breastplate so they don't share clothes perfectly with their other 18" soft-bodied counterparts.  Also their feet are just a smidgen bigger than AG so a lot of shoes are a struggle!

Honestly you can't beat AG for quality - you will be very disappointed with the wig if you go off-brand.  OG don't have the heftiness or much ability to pose as do AG and their hair is a far comparison.

But I have 2 JG's and I do really love them, it's just annoying that all the AG clothes are baggy on them!

But don't despair, there really are lots of ways to get an AG for less than retail - you can get a nicer condition though gently used doll for $50-60 if you are avidly hunting!

I would also keep an eye out at thrift stores, if you're actively hunting.  One of my AG girls is from thrift (but I know that I was *very* lucky to find her.)  I've also occasionally found some random AG clothes at thrift.

OG clothes and dolls seem to be common at the thrift stores in my area.

If you do decide you want a historical American Girl doll: Kit, Julie and Samantha seem to be the cheapest/most common on eBay.  Rebecca also seems to go fairly low.  If you decide you want an Our Generation doll, they do go on sale at Target (and sometimes on clearance.)  The accessories often go on sale.  And now might be a good time to shop, since Target is in the midst of mid-season toy markdowns.

Be sure to show pics of whomever you buy.  :)

Spring Pearl is first on my wishlist! I always dreamed of her as a child. She and Samantha stick out to me the most as my dream AG dolls. I can vividly remember flipping through catalogues and gazing longingly at her, haha. I read Pearl's book recently and I love her even more now. Her character is awesome!

Neela and Minuk are tied for second priority right now. Neela's just so beautiful but I really wanted Minuk as a kid too. Saba's on my wishlist as well since I just finished her book and really enjoyed it.

Kathleen is probably highest on my list but apparently she's the one that holds the most value? She must've come out the year we stopped getting catalogues because I would've remembered her, and she might've been the doll to finally convince my parents to bite the bullet and buy something from AG. But yeah, not a realistic goal at all for now xD

I'm going to order Pearl at the end of the month and then either Neela or Minuk once I sell something else. I might go for Minuk so I can make use of all the snow here during winter but we'll see.

They are now selling the Wellie Wishers in Canada!  I want Kendall but I don't think that will happen before Melody!

I hope you had fun sailorstitch! :D

And I'm glad the Wishers are finally available in Canada. They're such cute dolls.

I was really debating Melody for a while myself but thanks to the leaked doll I know I'm okay without her. I realized that I just can't do dark eyes. Even Maryellen's are almost too dark to photograph well and they make her look more "doll like". I love brown eyes but they photograph way, way too dark in AG dolls ): Maybe once I get a better camera I can change my policy, but for now I want to get Melody's meet outfit and a Cecile to wear it.

Today I brought out Maryellen and my favorite Madame Alexander Alexander-kin from the 50s for a fun little photoshoot. It ended in minor tragedy (rubber bands don't last 50 years!) but I got some cute shots before that.

I've been keeping an eye on the leaks. She's SO adorable! I absolutely need her meet outfit (for a future Cecile) but I can't do dark eyes like her's ): They look so dead and doll-like in photos to me. Even Maryellen's are almost too dark. I also really love (and want!) her pajamas, rumored fur coat, and the green Melody shirt with records on it.

I should be glad I don't have another AG doll to drool over but I'm pretty disappointed. If her hair had been brown like the book cover I probably would have caved anyways.

Her mini is to die for though. Too precious!

Have you guys seen the official sneak peaks on Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/agofficial/fall-16-sneak-peek/)?!?!

I'm going insane!!! My absolute DREAM, for years, has been to have a 50s kitchen complete with an authentic fridge and Geneva cabinets. Well guess who is getting A FRIDGE (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/484559241141155337/)?!?! I was trying to stay calm just in case it wasn't for her (I saw it on Instagram first), but the food (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/484559241141155360/) absolutely confirms it. I know what I want for Christmas!!!! I was going to ask for Lea but yeah, no. A 50s fridge is way more important than a doll.

And Maryellen's swimsuit is coming out! 1 (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/484559241141155368/), 2 (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/484559241141155390/)

I thought this dress looked like Truly Me but that apron really doesn't seem modern? Unless its a trend that I've missed because I'm unfashionable, haha. That hair looks a lot like ME's but I'm not familiar enough with all the redheads to be sure. 1 (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/484559241141155376/), 2 (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/484559241141155351/)

Melody's coat outfit was also revealed in a video on Facebook!!!

Nice sneek peaks :D If we had a place for my mother's dolls to be displayed I'd consider getting the new(to me) Mary Ellen. I love most of her outfits (same reason I loved Kit so)

Did you also see that most of Melody's collection is up on AG's site?

http://www.americangirl.com/shop/EndecaSearchFromProductDisplayViewAG?productIndex=0&parameterID=4294967282&ntk=productSearch&currentPage=0&search=true&langId=-1&inDimSearch=0&catalogId=10051&pageView=grid&sortBy=1&urlLangId=-1&categoryId=&urlRequestType=Base&storeId=10151&criteria=melody&itemsPage=-1

Not sure why they don't have the girl sized Meet outfit or the yellow keyboard up yet......

I got the day off work so I will be going to the Indy pop up store on the 25th! I was surprised to see that Melody's gold dress is $2 cheaper that I was expecting it to be. For Melody I want the get the doll with her ears pierced, meet accessories, gold dress and play outfit. I also want to get Julie's new outfit and maybe Maryellen's strawberry print outfit/swimsuit.

I know what you mean. Despite all my hype (I really cannot help it if Maryellen is involved) its basically happening at the worst time ever.

A friend in Canada went to Indigo or Chapters yesterday to check things out and Addy's stuff was majorly discounted. A salesperson told her that Addy isn't going to be sold in Canada anymore because of Melody. I wonder if that's a sign of things to come? I know Canada and Mexico have limited options but it makes me curious with all the rumors of her retiring. I haven't seen anyone else mention it yet unless my memory is even worse than I thought, haha.

Would anyone know any websites besides the AG Wikia that lists everything AG made with the official photos? I'm trying to complete a few different collections and have photos so I know I'm getting every little peice, and loading all the pages on the Wikia...mylaptop can't take it xD Something like MLPMerch's checklist would be amazing but I doubt that exists. I'm currently working on hunting down the original blonde boy/girl Bitty Twins. I gave them away in a Christmas event to make a nice gift for kids who would literally get nothing, and instead of cheap Walmart dolls I gave the Twins up instead. I kinda regret it, but I wouldn't change what I did as I can totally buy them back :) Literally the only AG thing I ever got rid of, too. :s Hoping to trade/sell off two Bitty's I found at thrift for them, but it's a pretty slim chance of an actual trade for the very original Twins. >_<

Some photos are showing up from the pop up stores! They have at least some of the Fall items already available so some of the photos have prices. Maryellen's fridge looks to be $150... please excuse me while I cry! I totally should've seen it coming but I didn't expect it to be quite that high! At least its a really good size, but ow... definitely not asking for that for Christmas!

I'll probably just ask for Rebecca instead. Maybe Lea if there's a good sale or bundle but I'm not fussed about having her meet outfit so meh.

Guys its amazing. what a collection you all have. Before joining this forum I was knowing only about Barbie dolls but there are lot more here. My baby has a Barbie doll and she keep on asking me to bring different dolls and because of her only I joined this forum. Now I will keep on updating myself by taking enough of information from here. My daughter has a collection of fifty Barbie doll as of now. But one more thing which is of her concern is that she cannot call her dolls by name. I helped her to take few names from www.babynology.com but we need an idea to have remembered all the names which we have chosen so far.

Welcome to MLPA Belinda! :)

I have a Shutterfly site (https://taxelponies.shutterfly.com/) to keep track of my collections. I post photos along with the doll/pony/plush's type (brand & release), name, and the date I got them. I used to keep it written down in a notebook but that was way too easy to lose.

I hope this is a good place to post this! If you guys think I should make a separate thread, I will, but the experts seem to hang out here.  ;)

I went to a thrift shop on my lunch break today, and came across an AG in really beautiful shape! I didn't recognize her, so I wasn't sure who she was - just looked at the AG wiki, and she seems to be the "Just Like You" model 30: http://americangirl.wikia.com/wiki/Just_Like_You_30 (http://americangirl.wikia.com/wiki/Just_Like_You_30)

The lighting in my room right now makes her look more Asian in my photos, but her skintone is more a lighter tanned Caucasian tone, and her hair and eyes are dark brown.

I don't collect AG (at least not currently, lol), so I am not so interested in keeping her, even though she's very cute, so it's tempting! My main question is whether this line is even collectible? I see from the wiki that her model isn't retired, but I was curious what she might go for, basically - she only cost me $10 and came in the pajama set. I figured if she wasn't really collectible the same as the historical line or GotY dolls, I'd see if any friends of mine have a kid who has been wanting an AG doll, and gift it to them. I know a lot of people are put off by the high cost of the dolls, and I remember how thrilled I was to get Kirsten when I was young, so I would love for a child to get to enjoy her if collectors are more interested in the character dolls.  :good:

I can't help with an ID but wow, congratulations! I have dreams of finding an AG doll in thrift stores, haha.

American Girl dolls are very collectible. I can't speak for this particular doll but from what I've seen the Asian mold dolls are fairly popular, at least on the forums I lurk and the people I follow on Instagram. The non-character dolls are very popular in general too! A lot of collectors seem to prefer them.

I don't know what the secondary market is like, especially right now with a big release with a new Historical and lots of clothes/accessories scheduled for tomorrow, but I imagine you'd be able to find a taker if you decided to sell or trade. She's super cute!

Wow, what a find!  She's cute.  :)

I think the modern dolls, in good shape, sell for around $30-$40?  Someone can come in and correct me on this.  $10 is an excellent deal.  I would have been so thrilled to have found her.

Also, I think those are (historical character) Julie's pjs, which seem to be discontinued.  If you sell/trade, you might want to sell those separately.  ;)

Its release day!!!! What are you guys excited about?

I really like the Gourmet Kitchen (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/drg50/CI-PDP) but not really enough to own it. The colors are great though! I also like the Milkshake (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/new/blender-milkshake-set-drg53) set, but I think it would be a similar price to order handmade ones off of Etsy so I'd rather do that. I don't want her myself but I'm SO beyond thrilled we got another redhead (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/new/truly-me-doll-light-skin-layered-red-hair-blue-eyes-drv84)!! And her hair actually looks red! Not blonde or brown, but actual red!

I'm more excited about Maryellen's fridge (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/new/maryellen-refrigerator-food-set-drk93) after seeing more details. I just love it so much, and one day it will be mine! Maybe for my birthday next year. I also really like her holiday cookies (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/new/maryellen-holiday-cookie-set-drk92) set. Its super cute and going right to my wishlist. I like the punch bowl and 7up in the party punch set (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/new/maryellen-party-punch-set-drk91) but not enough to really want it. I don't know how I feel about her Christmas outfit (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/new/maryellen-christmas-party-outfit-drk70). I really hate red (and pink and orange) on redheads so I'll probably pass on it. Her strawberry outfit (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/new/maryellen-strawberry-outfit-drk69) is to die for though! So adorable!

I'm pretty -extreme- picky about which dolls I get, but Maryellen is so tempting xD Not really intrested in owning Melody's collection, sadly. I already collect Molly and Samantha (original so far, plan to catch up to the new stuff eventually but not gonna get everything)

But that cookie set though. I have to get that, I had the same kind of cookie cutters growing up from my Grandmother! XD I'm a sucker for food items, too. I'll buy them from any doll's collection if they would work well enough with mine.

Is the Mod Monster (again) and the Skeleton kind-of costume the only Halloween we are getting this year? Kinda surprized nothing Halloween for Bitty either. :o

Green would've been perfect! Like a nice soft mint or a deep rich emerald, now that would match her so well.
I high recommend Maryellen :D She's so gorgeous and she seems to be doing really well! Originally I didn't want to get her collection, just an outfit or two, but my boyfriend and his mom kept talking me into how pretty things are! So I guess her collection will be mine eventually xD

Its a shame there's not much for Halloween D: I want to commission a Lone Ranger costume for Maryellen but it would've been cool if there was more stuff to pick from for my modern Springfield.

I lovelovelove light mint, I'd of bought that in an instant! And it'd work perfectly for her too, mint was a popular color then aswell.
I think I -may- get her for Christmas and start her collection and get what I like most XD She'd go so well with my Molly collection anyway <3

I remember when there were PAGES of great costumes to choose from. I guess that just kinda got lost over time :( Luckily I collected one or two each year for the longest time, but I liked getting my dolls a costume each year as much as myself, still do XD  I've made them ones based on my costume sometimes, I may have to start doing that again :P
And a Lone Ranger costume would be awesome for her, I'd love to see that!:D

Yes! I would've too! And it would've been such a nice fresh take on a Christmas dress. Or really any dress. Maryellen needs more Mint!
She'd make a great Christmas doll :D And she'd fit in great with Molly! I want to get Molly's Birthday dress for her.

I remember catalogues that made a big huge deal of it with all the cute pictures. I have a ballerina outfit my Springfield girl could use but nothing for poor Maryellen yet.
Once I can get it I'll definitely post photos!

Speaking of photos, I forgot to ever post Maryellen's Girl Scout uniform here! It was made by MySewYouCreations (https://www.etsy.com/shop/MySewYouCreations) and is absolutely amazing. The dress snaps closed, has snaps on the collar, the neck tie has velcro, the sash has velcro, and all the badges (not counting the number) are on snaps so they can be repositioned or swapped! The big pockets even work and snap closed.

Yeah, it is AMAZING! :D It ended up costing quite a bit of money but it was sooo worth it. Its nice enough to photograph beautifully, even on macro, but not so nice that taking it outside is terrifying, like it would be with those $100+ Girl Scout uniforms. I'm really tempted to put my great grandma's pins (from the 50s) on it for some photos but I don't want to make holes.

I need to grab those brown AG shoes, the on-sale ones, asap and then get some custom-made socks. The socks are going to be a big pain but it'll be worth it in the end xD

And since I forgot it earlier, here's a fullbody shot. The length is perfect!

Hmmmm you know I am looking at her Christmas dress and to me a huge collector of 1950's stuff it falls short for its circa date, but I can't put my finger on what is wrong with it. It just doesn't look quite to period to me. I love that strawberry dress. Oh goodness that is perfection at its best.

Taxel, I love the uniform.  That is so fun!!!

It looks sooo similar to the dress for Bitties (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/bitty-baby/drl48)/Little Girls (http://www.americangirl.com/shop/bitty-baby/tartan-taffeta-dress-drt24). It makes me wonder if it was originally a coordinating Truly Me dress but they decided to tweak it (or not) and give it to Maryellen. She must be doing really well to get the expensive fridge addition and all the new sets. Maybe they wanted to cash in a bit more? Who knows!
There was some speculation on the leak blog that maybe it was for Melody but I don't know enough about 60s fashion (or even 50s) to know who it fits better. I just know I do not like that red on Maryellen and its weird how similar it is to the Bitty dress.

And thanks Tulagirl! :D I thought you'd like it, haha.

Taxel that GS uniform is adorable.  I remember when I was little I had (have!) a Samantha doll and my grandmother made all her "official" clothes from a pattern book for me.  They are nearly identical to the real outfits but they mean so much more.  <3

Thank you Skeen! I know just what you mean. I have a box of 18in size doll clothes that my granny made and gave to me. Some of them aren't even themes I'd pick myself (like the ballet dancer one) but they mean so much to me. I worry more about taken them places than I do about the super expensive AG meet outfit!

I hadn't seen that article yet, sailorstitch, but I did see photos of the clothes/accessories/dolls for sale at TRUs on the leak blog. I'm absolutely THRILLED! The prices are only like $1 more expensive, which is really nothing in the long run compared to shipping. I hope they focus on TRU stores far from AG stores. The nearest store (temporary store) to me is 11 hours away, but we have a TRU (one of two in the entire state) just down the road. If Wellies were stocked there I'd actually have a chance at them, and SO many children would find them who might not see them otherwise!

It also might be an easier way for people to actually buy them, not just shipping wise. I know grandparents are often a target for buying AG stuff for grandkids but not every senior has a computer or a way to order things online. This will make it a lot easier for those types of grandparents to buy them.

Overall I'm just happy :D I think its a great move and it does nothing to devalue AG store trips. Going to an AG store and going to TRU are completely different experiences that can't be compared, but its unreasonable to expect AG stores to be everywhere even if it would be awesome. Plus TRU has sales and coupons :D

Yea!  :cheer:  It is much easier for me to get to TRU then it is to get to the AG store (though there is one about 45 minutes away; I just never get over there.)  Though that might be kind of dangerous, come to think of it...  :D

As for Maryellen's holiday dress, looking at it...  from my limited knowledge of fashion, I *think* that looks more 1950s than early 1960s (with it's hourglass shape.)  It may have been contemporary but I don't think it was ever Melody's.

Oh I was going to say that mom was thinking since she was a 1950's girl that what is wrong with the Christmas dress is the skirt it not full enough, the color combination is not something she remembers and the bow was done incorrectly at the waist.  Now it could swing into the 60's but it would have to be pre 1965 and still the bow would be better in the center straight or to the side straight.  They did make that style dress in the early 60's and it was not as flared out as it's 1950's version, but color...meh.  Not sure on that one.

Special occasion styles as they called it in the 1950's were fuller circle style skirts.  That would include birthday dresses, Christmas or Easter dresses and the like.  Here is a fun site to see that school dresses were different than special occasion and  you will see the fullness because, they wore fluffy slips under those dresses.  The Bolero sweater is right for the time. I think with this AG dress they tried to do a belt version on the front of the bodice.  The bow would always be straight and not on its side.  I looked through all my doll clothes and I have this as an example from the 50's.
Oh and I really do believe that the fabrics for special occasion would have been much fancier as taffeta was popular though they did have some more tailored looks too.  Obviously, its no big deal really.  I just wish they had put a little more effort in a Christmas dress than that.  It had all the right elements just missing that flare I personally would like to see.  I am really into doll fashion and costuming.  So I guess I am picky nicky. ROFLOL

Here is a dress with that bodice style, please ignore the fact that it is stained and faded it is quite old.  Fullness of the skirt...

So, maybe we can figure out what they were looking at when they came up with that outfit? Hmmmm

We're going to California for Christmas and that can only mean one thing: American Girl store!!!!

I've never gone despite living so close to AGPLA for most of my life. I can't wait! If all goes according to plan I'll be bringing home Rebecca or Willa. I'm trying to sell off everything I can to fund an awesome little AG spending spree. I'd love to get an outfit or two for Maryellen as well, if I can. And if I really want to dream big, maybe mini Melody too!

Pretty weird question, but I'm not really on any AG websites or anything, I'm sure there are though.
Would anyone know anyone who re-hairs the historical dolls at all? I have a Molly who was made before the Mattel takeover. Her hair is almost completely gone, in the past I foolishly used real hair de-tangle spray on it among other things >_< It was so dry and frizzy the moment I took it out of the factory braids, to find she did not have that shiny hair seen in the catalog photos of it down <_<;
She means a ton to me, she was a partial gift from my grandmother who chipped in a lot so I could get her, so I won't have anything but the hair replaced. Especially the head. :/
So the official doll hospital is not for consideration. I asked them in the store once, and was told yes, there's a huge risk you would lose her head if they even do Molly's now (that was 2+ years ago)
I'd take a picture of the poor girl if I had her on hand, she's with my family for the time being stored safely.
If someone here does this, I'd be eternally grateful (and pay, of course lol!) and much more trusting :) She's just so special to me, I could never get over her head being thrown away.

Hi Itcheeee! :D

The Doll Hospital does only head replacements, not just wig/eye swaps from what I've been told, so that's definitely off the table for you. But there's good news: AG dolls aren't rooted! You can replace her hair yourself easily at home without any risk of her getting lost in the mail.

You just need to buy a new wig :) You can hunt around for a Molly wig on eBay or buy a different wig if you want. I don't know what the usual wig attaching stuff is for AG dolls, but other dolls use stuff like wig caps, velcro, or even nothing. Super easy to do yourself.

Oh, from what I hear wig swaps is one of the easiest things to do. I haven't had a doll need it yet. You might try looking for videos on YouTube.

I had no idea they used wigs XD This makes so much more sense, then being super closely rooted or something haha

I'm keeping my eyes out for an original Molly wig to show up on ebay, I saw a few sold recently too. Thanks so much for the info, I might get her fixed up in time for Christmas :D <3

So pony pals, I'd like your opinion. I've been toying around with the idea of crocheting stuff to sell this holiday season. Because honestly I'd like a thanksgiving this year rather than pick up retail like I normally do. How well does doll size stuff go over? My specialty in general is character hats. I tried out a pattern with the character gir today. From what I've looked at online it looks like super basic hats go for $3 and character hats $7-10 depending on how elaborate the piece is.

I apologize with how terrible Addy's hair is. Her hair has always been a pain in the behind. At least this trial got her out of a box and a rubber band removed from her hair.

Aw ): At least you know what you do want lovesbabysquirmy? I hope you can do it!

I just got the October catalogue in the mail. I got two copies (addressed to different "families") and they're drastically different. Only the cover (aside from a graphic on the side), inside flap, and Bittie/Wellie pages (ordered differently) are the same. One looks like a holiday version and has beautiful photos of all the Historicals, minus Addy, with blurbs about their winter celebrations and is a good bit larger. The other is pretty standard. Is this normal? Do they just send a random one to people? That sounds like a great way to pile up the complaints on Facebook...

Sounds like you got the Holiday Wish Book, plus the regular catalogue!  Congrats!  The Wish Book is what they send to their customers BEFORE they become loyal - once you become loyal, they won't send you much of anything so cherish your catalogues.  They don't send them often!  A few years from now, someone will likely want to pay you for that Wish Book (they are collectible, in a way) so keep it somewhere so it doesn't get bent, creased, etc. :)

They stopped sending catalogues in Canada last year- claimed it cost too much.  They were able to bombard my husband with catalogues 4x a year before they officially "expanded" and now have a Canadian Head Office - but that means that lots of merchandise can't be imported here now, they don't send catalogues, there is no "free shipping with only a $10 surcharge", the loyalty programs aren't available to us (AG Rewards or Register Your Doll), plus we are NOT getting AG in our TRU stores, nor Kohl's, nor Costco.  :(  we have Chapters Indigo which is lovely for sure, but it doesn't carry everything and they have their own restrictions on coupons, loyalty programs, etc.

And as you have seen, general coupons and promo codes from AG are just about impossible to get.  :(

My husband says that he will only build my dollhouse if I draw him blueprints and AUTO-CAD, so that all he has to do is cut the wood and prep the screw holes.  Which I haven't done any architectural designs in .... uhhhhhh  12 years?  So I feel like it's a convenient way for him to push my project to the side "because she'll never get around to it."  :(  Also I can't afford for any of his woodworking friends to build it for me.  Soooooooo...  yeah.

In the meantime, my doll stuff piles up and gets trashed by my child because "you told her she could play with it, you aren't allowed to go back on that.  Don't want her breaking your stuff?  Shouldn't have told her she could play!  I'm not watching her.  Get rid of the breakables before I hear any more whining about it."  :(  Yeah.  I said I had no problem with her playing under supervision - which meant he would have to watch her when I'm at work.  Oh noes!

Anyone know of any good designs for an AG doll house that can be locked?  I'm wanting some kind of front-opening cabinet with plexiglass doors...  2 or 3 rooms tall.  It has to accommodate both Felicity's high-poster bed as well as Maryellen's Diner...  Everytime I Google, I only get massive dollhouse complexes that fit in a playroom or I get so many miniatures displayed in museums, it makes me dizzy trying to see the details!

I'll grab some measurements from my dad's shelving in the basement. It fit's Felicity's high poster bed just fine, just not the old school giant backdrops from pleasant company. And I'll grab some photos, it's an excuse to play.

I haven't gotten a wishbook in years. Every now and then they send us one. I think our last was 2010ish? Every 5 or so years we seem to get one since I grew up out of them and my mom stopped buying.

Thanks so much lovesbabysquirmy! I thought one might be the Wish Book but I wasn't quite sure. I'm guessing the Wish Book is the smaller one. At the beginning there's a spread about the quality of the dolls and the whole set up is totally different from normal catalogues. Very white and mostly flat lays instead of modeled photos. It definitely feels like its meant to attract adults!

There have been so many complaints on Facebook about the loss of catalogues in Canada. I get that they might have to make a second catalogue but it seems like it would be worth it to actually advertise in all the countries that have stores of some kind... Plus then they could explain right in the catalogue that only some of the AG lines are available in Canada. Maybe that would help people understand instead of be frustrated trying to place orders online for things that don't seem to exist. (Based on the complaints I've seen.) I just really don't get it. AG is just like... bafflingly behind the times.

I'm so sorry your husband is being kind of a jerk about your dolls, that's awful of him ): At the very least he could actually watch his kid! That's so rude. How would he feel if she trashed his stuff because you didn't watch her? Ugh. Unsupportive family are so frustrating. Its got to be worse with a partner. Either way, I hope you're able to find some measurements you can use as a starting point! It sounds like it'll be better for everyone once the dollhouse is all taken care of.

lovesbabysquirmy,

An idea on height, you can adjust the shelves for however tall you want them my dad was using up scrap lumber to build these shelves. Though you'd have to design doors for them. Really basic nothing too pretty going on here. You can sort of see how he's notched the lumber to fit together.

Obviously needs several inches lower on the shelf to accommodate her bed.

More furniture for scale

Measurments: sorry these were quick I could have done a better job but hopefully it's a nice starting point for you?
63 x46 wide and roughly 24 inches deep.
Looks like he was using up a bunch of inch and a 1/4 plywood for shelves.

So I finally got my beloved childhood Molly and a bunch of her clothes from my family today. Turns out she has more issues then just the wig, and is in need of some serious TLC.
Including missing her glasses which are not cheap to replace.
An off-brand much less harsh magic eraser cleaned her skin up beautifully after the picture was taken, but couldn't remove the blue marker stain on her cheek. And also the back of one ankle but that won't show very often.

Wig is being replaced, but I didn't remember just -how- bad her original one was.
Two specks of paint chipped off an eyelid, though when I display her that will probably never be a problem.
And the main thing...her one leg is hanging 3-4 inches too low, the cord seems to be wearing heavily. Not sure if I'll be able to do much about that, I don't really want to mess up taking the entire torso apart. :S

She needs to be restrung. Another easy fix. I've done it once. Seach YouTube for videos on "how to restring an AG". You should be able to get all the supplies at your local hardware store.

For the ink stains, treat it the same way you would stains on a MLP.

As for the Costco set, it's the first year I've ever seen Costsco carry the full size doll items.  Last year, they only had the gift cards (and this year, they don't have the gift cards - at least mine doesn't.)  If you don't want the doll and only want the outfits...  it's almost still worth it.  You can re-sell the Samantha doll on eBay for probably around $30 and still keep the outfits.  It just depends on if you want the hassle of trying to sell the doll.

Unless you know someone you can give the doll to.  :)

I think they might have had a similar bundle for Caroline before she was archived. I wonder if the red dress will show up at regular ag stores or online on its own.

Does anyone have Costco Samantha's SKU (I think that's what its called), or can anyone ask on AG Playthings for me? I want to try asking for her for Christmas and any info I can get for the lazy buyer will help my chances haha.

I really really hope you can! Haha. Samantha was the doll I wanted when I was like 8. I'm desperately hoping I can find a way to make this deal happen. Its just way too good! If she was available online it would be a lot easier (said lazy gift buyer will generally only put in enough effort for online orders even if its waaay more expensive that way) but fingers crossed anyways. We have a Costco an hour or two away and one in California where we're visiting in December so I have some options.

And while I'm here I should post photos of my sloth! I got him a little while ago at Kohl's. He's perfect in every way <3 So perfect that my boyfriend wants one for Christmas, haha!

American Girl was having a one day only sale today: $150 for all Beforever dolls and their holiday collections. I decided to get Rebecca, who comes with her kittens, menorah and dreidel set, and her holiday dress! Unfortunately, it didn't come with her accessories, but that's okay, I"m still so excited!
Can't wait to get her! I'll make sure to share some pics once she's here!

New catalogues! :D I love love love that there's redheads on the front! And a new sweepstakes (https://americangirl.promo.eprize.com/wwsweeps/) for Wellie Wishers! Maybe I'm just behind though cause it started on the 1st, haha.

What in the world is this giant one?! Its like as big as my torso!!!

The small one looks adult-oriented but the huge one is more kid friendly. Addy has like, partial spread in the big one and isn't in the small one. Sam comes after Addy in it. More bad signs for her?

OOOOH you received a mythical Wishbook!  That's what the collectors call them anyway - big special holiday catalogues.
Title: Re: American Girl
Post by: Taxel on November 15, 2016, 03:36:31 AM
So that's what a Wishbook is! I thought it was that like, double/triple thick catalogue I got last time. It seemed to fit the vague descriptions of Wishbooks I've seen. I guess I'm just really lucky and keep getting all the cool stuff xD

I can see why they're so coveted! Looking through it I felt like I was 9 years old again, excitedly waiting to circle nearly everything in the catalogue. I have no idea how I'm going to store this thing but Maryellen got a billion (aka 3 full page spreads) pages so I'm in heaven! Sadly its a little bit damaged but honestly I'm amazed such a huge catalogue survived USPS at all.

AG seriously needs to start selling posters. I don't care how tacky it is. I want all these gorgeous promo shots of Maryellen on my wall.

Also, before I forget, Toybox Philosopher did a really in-depth review of Wellie Wishers (http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/2016/11/willa-and-welliewishers-from-american.html) (Willa & Kendall). Most of the reviews I've seen for them have been really tiny and/or biased so it was nice to get her opinion. I'm still firmly convinced I need Willa and Emerson so I guess I'm doomed, haha.

Even with missing the sale the holiday sale bundles are such a deal! I'm so tempted to get Mary Ellen for my mom. Even though I know full well she'd be stored in the basement with the rest of the dolls.

It's a picture of a Target OG doll in Lea's box. Somebody bought Lea, took her home, swapped out the AG doll for an OG doll and then returned her to the store! And an unknowing Khol's employee accepted the return and put the knock off doll on the shelf.

Hmm...  I really don't think I can fit more than 3 AG dolls in my room at the moment (I still have to open Samantha) but I'm tempted by Melody. Thanks for the head's up.  :)

You're welcome scarletjul! And yeah, tons of Kohl's stores got Lea and Wellie Wishers last month. It was awesome to get to see her and pick up my sloth in person.

This Amazon-AG partnership is the best thing ever. I'm using Bing Rewards to get Amazon gift cards too. Its a little slow but hey, if it leads to free AG its fine by me. :D

As much as it sucks I'm gonna give up on the Costco Samantha set. Its a great deal but uncle hates putting effort into things and prefers to buy on Amazon. Selling stuff isn't going too well either. I don't even like Sam's BF meet outfit so a nude one will be easy to find later and I can just buy her coat from someone. Its less stressful to just make an Amazon wishlist of all the ME stuff I want and email it. Maybe next year Sam!

Maryellen's movie came out today!!!! Has anyone else watched it?

I was really worried after the horrible butchering of Melody's character/story/family/everything, but Maryellen's movie is just perfect. There were a couple tiny things I didn't like and I prefer the house/actress from the AG short. Still, I really loved it overall! The story was great and I loved how they weaved in the new stuff; it all felt really natural.

Not to mention all the pretty 50s stuff! The Larkins' kitchen is to die for 8D

I can't wait to see it Taxel.  I know I will love it since this is my favorite decade.  My mother did get her dress by the way and she likes it.  I am not sure it had the impact I had hoped for but at least she was able to say how nice it was of us to send such a nice gift to her.  So, that was pretty good I guess.  I think the part that seems to be stumping her is she doesn't have the doll. I don't either and I told her I wish we both had her, but there have just been so many expenses I guess AG dolls went on the back burner for us.  I just need to save a little here and there and she will eventually arrive in my home lol.

Yes, you'll definitely love it Tula! Its such a sweet movie.

I'm glad your mom liked the dress even if she didn't react quite the way you hoped. Maybe you'll be able to find a good deal on eBay or Craigslist for the doll :)

I think my mother's main problem is she is so stressed out about her health she can't find a way to enjoy her dolls. I think she feels at this time it would be better not to collect anymore. I kind of understand where she is coming from.  She is in her 70's now and has a lot of stuff from AG.  I think she is starting to slow down realizing she can't keep up with it anymore.  I realize that I get some of my purest doll collecting issues from her.  She has trouble having an outfit for a doll she doesn't have.  I so get that.  I am even finding it difficult to keep up with all my collections and I like my dolls to have all their stuff.  I didn't like Ivy. I felt she should have had longer hair. I loved her outfit, so I got it off of ebay for Julie. ROFLOL  I really want this doll for probably my last AG doll but, I can't afford her now. I want the puppy more.
Title: Re: American Girl

That makes a lot of sense Tula. It reminds me of my great aunt in a way. She was so stressed about what would happen to her dolls because she's getting older. Being able to pass them on to me was such a relief for her. She doesn't have to worry about their condition or if they'll get thrown away or burn up in a house fire or anything like that. She only kept a few of her favorite dolls but she felt a lot better knowing they'll have somewhere to go.

I'm lucky I'm not a completionist! The only doll I would love a completely collection of is Maryellen, but at the same time I'd be fine missing out on a lot of her stuff. I don't need the diner (the OG one is a better deal after its painted) and clothes can always be commissioned as reproductions from a seamstress. I'm not big on her TV either, but since my boyfriend has an iPad it would be fun.

I'm also lucky Maryellen's stuff is on Amazon so I can get gift cards from Bing Rewards and Swagbucks for free to buy pieces here and there. Older dolls are a lot harder to collect ): I hope when Felicity is re-released she goes to Amazon too. I read her books a few months ago and realized she is literally me as a child! Well, maybe not as literally as Maryellen is but I would have connected with Felicity a lot since I was a horse obsessed, musical-instrument-learning tomboy. And technically she has red hair too, even if the Felicity dolls in the catalogue looked like brunettes.

Just got Caroline Abbot back from the doll hospital this week. Found a dog chewed up limb one at goodwill for $10 so I got her all fixed up and got her original dress of ebay pretty cheap. My mom is getting her for Christmas. Just talked to dad about going in half and half on MaryEllen for her birthday. She seems super happy with Caroline. If dolls keeps her from asking for a new embroidery machine (old one is working just fine) it at least is a cheaper investment for birthdays/Christmas. Though she's back ordered til March at least mom's birthday isn't til May. But is the era she grew up in and same hair/eye color she had as a child.

After finding Caroline man have these dolls gone on a diet since Pleasant Company! lol so much more slender in the bum. Hopefully that means some of the old stuff fits easier than I remember it fitting as a kid.

Haha that's true. Who remembers those doll dress pattern books that were for the dolls. My mom would sew those for me. I only had Felicity (the other dolls didn't quite stick with me) but my parents would buy all the books so Felicity had tons of outfits. I found a site where you can download the patterns:

What do you guys think of the upcoming 2017 releases? I'm hoping to get Gabby, though I am disappointed in AG for just repackaging #46. The first and perhaps only black goty deserved more than just the Gwen treatment. I'm probably going to pass on Tenney based on her description, but am interested in her collection and the rumored boy doll Logan. I'm also super excited for Felicitys comeback! Her new meet is beautiful and I hope it's available separately.

Thank you for that pattern link, MangleCrafter! :D

As for the 2017 releases, right now I'm saving up for Felicity and her books while hoping she ends up on Amazon. I read her books a few months back and fell in love. If I'd read them as a child, she's the doll I would have wanted. I'm disappointed her book covers have such brown looking hair. I really hope that's not a sign of how the doll looks. If her red hair is retconned I'm going to be furious and won't be spending a dime on any of her stuff. It was bad enough how brown it looked in catalogues when I was a kid so I had no idea she was a redhead :/

Right now I don't think I'll go for Gabby. I'll wait to see owner photos before deciding for sure but I have to keep my collection really small so I need to be super picky. I'm definitely going to get her books and mini doll. I want a few of her outfits/accessories too but it depends where they're available.

I'm meh on Tenney so far. I don't really like blondes so I try to avoid them but I'm very curious about her rumored new hand mold. That might be enough to get me to grab her and do a wig swap if I like it. Different hand molds would be huge for photography and that's my main thing. I'm fairly curious about Logan but I prefer girl dolls so I'm a bit meh about him too for now. But again the rumored hands might be enough to tip me over to buying him. I'll probably get their books since I collect them even though I'm not big on the Country thing.

There is a picture floating around of what is supposedly the new Felicity. Her hair is more auburn than red, and she no longer has the laser green eyes. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it's the real thing.

Man, I am so out of sync with this stuff... I went on hiatus from AG collecting after they retired Felicity the first time.  I just couldn't keep up with it anymore even though I love them. Not a huge fan of the route that Mattel has taken with changes to the historical doll line but seeing the new characters is fun. I have Samantha (childhood doll), Nellie, Felicity and Elizabeth, and Kirsten.

So after sitting all night outdoors in -15 weather.... Mary Ellen arrived already! here I was assuming the doll itself was on back order from the sale bundle but it's only her Christmas cookies that are  back ordered!

Also Fed Ex is nuts.... We've had a ton of snow this weekend and I have a pile literally blocking our front door which would suggest you know please come to the back door. Nope, left it at the front door. Here I was expecting a package tomorrow so I checked the tracking number and was surprised to see it arrived yesterday.

Here is a photo of many of my dolls. Its not really a good photo, but my back hurts so here we go.  Oh and I let my nieces play with my AG dolls so their original clothing may have been changed. I have mounds and mounds of AG original outfits and accessories.  I have had to put most of it up do to sticky paws Vinny and his side kick Whiskers Sticky Chloe'.  There are two dolls I really want Mary Ellen and Melody.  Sadly, I am not sure I will ever get them.  I am running out of funds for buying new dolls for my collection as well as, running out of room to store them.

:D  I remember when these came out!  I used to stare at the catalogues for hours.

Your's looks like it is in lovely condition.  :)

Thank you!  She definitely has some wear on her face from all the kisses and being carried around.. haha!  I loved all the AGOT outfits in the catalogue, but I only ended up having a couple.  Sometimes I think about hitting up eBay..

Oh Tula your collection is lovely! You have so many of the "best" girls, haha. I bet your clothing/accessory collection is to die for. I really hope you'll be able to add Maryellen and Melody someday. They're both such gorgeous dolls.

EmBee, Meg looks great! I just love her outfit.

I love how varied your girls are, lovesbabysquirmy! And you have excellent taste in names! Delilah Jane and Adeleine are both so sweet.

I got lucky this year and had a very AG Christmas! :D

First, on Christmas day I got mini Rebecca, a mini outfit, and a fullsize outfit from my aunt. I have no idea how she managed to randomly pick Rebecca! She's the next fullsize doll I want and my aunt didn't know at all. The mini outfit is to die for! Its SO adorable! Sadly the big outfit's pants/shoes don't fit Ellie, which was a huge bummer, but they look adorable on Lena.

I took mini Ellie to a 50s diner for breakfast! :D Our waitress even recognized her as an AG.

And guess where my boyfriend took me on the 29th?!?! It only took like 14 years of waiting and dreaming. I took a ton of photos but they're all terrible, blurry messes and I'm positive better ones exist so here's just a few. It was rather chaotic with Christmas, Lea retiring, and the big sale. I expected more stuff to be out in the open to play with so I was a bit disappointed.

Maryellen got her birthday dress as a Christmas gift from my boyfriend's uncle before we left, so I took her hair down for the first time and and she got to wear it. My granny gave me a bit of Christmas money to take with me. Maryellen's collection was 40% off so I was able to get her poodle skirt outfit and the store jeans!

Plus the girls basically got an entire wardrobe worth of clothes from my granny. She made TONS for Christmas and bought a bunch of Springfield/My Life As shoes. PJs, shirts, pants, dresses, a robe... there's so much its insane. I kept pulling things out and was stunned. Plus a few ponies and a mini MLA doll. While I was staying with her we made toooooons more clothes too, almost all for the 18in girls. This was our first big joint project :D Sadly the "one size 18in" pattern is for Journey Girls it seems... are there any other dolls of that size or do I need to get a JG? XP

What pattern were you using to make clothes?
Title: Re: American Girl
Post by: Taxel on January 05, 2017, 01:17:39 PM
Various Simplicity patterns, some recent and some quite a few years old. They had varying types of dolls showcasing the outfits but of course the best ones had Journey Girls. I figured I'd chance it anyways since slim 18in is a less popular size but obviously the cover photo was accurate.

I marked a bunch of the JG-modeled patterns and my granny started cutting out the pieces for the ones I liked before I left so I'm probably gonna end up needing one. I don't want to let those pretty dresses go to waste!

From what I understand, Journey Girls are the only dolls with that size torso?  They do make some pretty dolls, though, so I'm sure you can find something you like.  Personally, I'm fond of Dana.  :)

Are Karito Kids still being made? The website isn't working for me and a quick Google search wasn't much help. Everything for sale seems to be secondhand.

I really like this Chavonne (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=86564686&cp=2255956.2273442.2255963.4174558.10834348&parentPage=family). Her coloring is just beautiful and her outfit has some very useful pieces. I think she'd be gorgeous in the prints we picked out.

If AG treats their dolls, clothing, and accessories any cheaper I might just have to be done... There shouldn't be holes in $115+ dolls or $20+ clothing!

That is disappointing.  These dolls are far too expensive for Mattel to start getting so cheap with them.

Wow...

I went to the AG FB page and everyone is furious. I can't even believe these changes they're making. Gabi's window box has grown on me (although it looks awful on shelves in all the photos I've seen) but the clothing tacked to boxes is unacceptable. And now this? What?! This is a luxury doll brand. No one wants to pay these prices for items that are damaged right out of the box!

I guess I'm going to forgo the camera this year and focus my Swagbucks earnings on Maryellen's collection and maybe the couple Melody pieces I want. At least Amazon Prime doesn't gouge shipping like direct from AG :/

Ugh.... if AG goes what modern doll brands will even be left? Playline quality is atrocious across the board. All that's left is luxury (or vintage) and so many are out of reach or just not my thing. I can't even think of another brand I'd want to collect. Maybe A Girl For all Time, but I don't want multiple dolls... sigh. At least its good for my wallet and saving space, I guess.

I'm not surprised based on Mattel's history. I mean they did lose the license for Disney dolls recently.  The quality took a hit slightly when they took over from pleasant co.
Didn't realize AG gouged the shipping? I've had good luck with that but then the main shipping warehouse is Madison and I'm within an hour from there which probably explains why it's so cheap for me. I was shocked shipping a doll to the doll hospital only cost me $10 I was expecting closer to 20 with the size of the box.

Since tickets go on sale tomorrow, I was toying with the idea of going to the Madison Children's Museum  warehouse sale this summer. Anyone else going? I haven't gone in several years. Depending on if I get a ticket, I might be able to pick stuff up for others. I don't remember having to send a check in to go. But maybe I went during free entrance last time. I'd most likely just go on Sunday when things are 50%. If anything the entrance cost counts towards donations on my taxes.

I have to agree making sewn on underwear is a big step down for American Girl. What's interesting is that the Bitty Babies will remain unchanged meaning you can still remove their diapers but some of the dolls meant for older girls will now have the sewn on non removable underwear.

That's true, but the Disney dolls were just cheap playline things. I didn't expect them to start screwing up AG's quality like this.

AG's shipping is very very expensive, especially for these days. Most companies offer low flat shipping rates or always have stuff like "free shipping for $50/$75/$100 purchases". If there wasn't a free shipping event when we ordered Maryellen it would've been tons extra, like $15-20 or so? Its unbelievable that people can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars and AG is still too cheap to give them free shipping. It also seems, from what I've read, that AG stuff arrives either pretty quick or insanely slow. Its ridiculous for such a large luxury brand.

I didn't even know about the warehouse sale until a few months ago! It sounds like a really cool thing to go to.

Edit: Aren't they bring AG to the Middle East? I bet that's the real reason for this. And based on this tweet they won't even be attached... they'll be printed, is my guess.

Of course they're PINK instead of something neutral like white, so now dolls can have their pink panties show under light colored clothing.

Sorry I haven't been on here. I've had enough trouble keeping up with this topic over on AGPT. There's a 28 page thread just on the "permapanties" over there!

I was thinking about getting Gabby and Logan, but now... nope. I'm done with modern dolls! And luckily I already have the three Beforever dolls that will be affected. I think I'm just going to wait for the rumored Pearl Habor historical. If she has sewn on underwear and not bloomers like Molly.... I will most likely be done with AG for good.

I can't wrap my head around how STUPID this idea is! This new release that's coming out on the 16th includes a bathroom for Julie. The bathroom has a shower, sink and toilet. Julie can now only use the sink because her underwear is sewn to her body! Seriously!!! Who uses a toilet with their underwear on?

I wish so badly that PT would stop being ridiculous and finally stop this nonsense of not letting people in. I hate how exclusive the community for these dolls is... all this news lately has only made it worse :/

But anyways, I've been considering Tenney on and off but after this its a huge no from me too. It was already taking a lot to consider buying a blonde doll but I was so intrigued by those unique hand molds I was thinking I might do it. But nope, no way. Supposedly Gabby, Tenney, and Logan are still immoral with their inappropriate removable underwear for now. Though really, at this point, I wouldn't trust AG about it. Way too big a risk for me. Maybe I'll buy a baity Tenney on Craigslist or something later to get the arms, but that's it. I'm not going to support her release.

Somehow I didn't even see the bathroom set until after I found out about this underwear nonsense. I could only laugh and laugh and laugh. Who in their right mind really thought about this, like actually thought it through?! I hope AG enjoys all the complaints and furious relatives when girls cut up their dolls trying to remove this dumb underwear...

This new CEO needs to be fired, immediately. She has no idea what she's doing. If she isn't careful she's going to destroy the brand completely.

This new CEO needs to be fired, immediately. She has no idea what she's doing. If she isn't careful she's going to destroy the brand completely.[/center]

I had a thought about who's behind this, but I'm not really sure how to explain it.

AG just got a new CEO not long ago. Considering these new dolls are ready to roll out now, that means this has been in the works for a long time. Between design/production time and how long it takes to get products from China to WI, my guess would be at least a year. Could this have been the decision of the last CEO? (Sorry, I'm blanking on names right now.) Could it be that this was too far into the works for the new CEO to stop it? Some are also wondering if this was the decision of somebody at Mattel. Somebody higher than AG's CEO.

There are a lot of theories floating around as to why they are doing this. Nobody is buying AG's BS excuse that this is what the customers have been asking for.

1 - Cutting production cost. They think they save money by not producing underwear for these dolls. Yet they are making the pattern for the body more complex. And they are still going to sell the extra underwear sets.

2 - AG's expansion into the middle east.
http://m.arabianbusiness.com/dubai-s-maf-inks-deal-bring-american-girl-the-gulf-656987.html

3 - The AG body was originally a Gotz doll body. Some are wondering if it was a paten issue. If it was, wouldn't they have to change all the bodies?

4 - It's a modesty issue. Because a few parents think it's inappropriate for children to see naked dolls. This way the doll will never be naked.

5 - Logan, the first boy doll. It's suspicious that this is happening at the same time AG is releasing their first boy doll. Introduce the first boy and all the girls are given chastity belts. As far as AG is saying on Facebook, Logan's underwear will be removable. It looks like the sewn in underwear is to prevent doll hanky-panky.

None of the reasons anybody has come up with makes perfect sense. Each one has their own "But what about _____?"

There is a petition to stop this.

Well at least I know not to ask about underwear at the sale this summer! lol I bet it will get quite the crowd of collectors and resellers to try to snatch up the last few non permanent undie dolls. I have to pick up a doll for my mom so either Julie or Rebecca and then I'm on the lookout for Addy/Kit clothes for myself. Then stuff for resale last depending on cost.

This is a good list. It summarizes a lot of the thoughts I've seen on FB too. But man this one is just hilarious.... AG should check out Instagram for 5 minutes. They're way too late to prevent these poor little dolls getting into inappropriate situations!

I wouldn't be shocked if Logan was at least a bit of a factor though.

I love American Girl! I have Josefina and a Truly Me doll, who I named Elizabeth. I got them when I was around 10/11 and have recently dug them out of my closet and started getting into the fandom again.

If you're interested in seeing more AG content, I post about my dolls on my AG blog - https://lizzieandjosieag.tumblr.com/

I also love to talk about the various characters and their stories, as well as the doll/collecting side of it! Recently I have been kind of sad because I haven't seen much of an online adult AG collector community, but it seems I've found some people!

Welcome to our little thread, Leafy! :D

Your girls are so cute! Which Girls of Many Lands do you have?

I'd love to talk about the characters! I've been reading through the books lately since I never got a chance when I was a kid. Maryellen, Melody, Felicity, Nellie, Grace, and Lindsey are my favorites so far.

As a newbie the community is extremely exclusive. It sucks, a lot :/ There's the Playthings forum, but they've been semi-secretly (unmentioned until after you sign up) not accepting members for like a year, if not more. Then there's the AG Collectors forum, which seems to mostly be politics and all the discussion seems to happen in like 3 threads so its hard to find/discuss specific topics. Lastly there's Instagram, which is mostly little kids (10-16ish) so as an adult it feels creepy and weird. Plus for them Insta is all about sucking up to each other so its just totally bizarre and uncomfortable. AG blogging seems to be kind of dead... I haven't found many active ones, but there's a few.

I just wanna post/look at doll photos and sometimes have discussions but there's nowhere to really do that ):

Taxel,
Thanks so much!
My Girls of Many Lands are Isabel, Cécile, Saba, Minuk, and Neela. I might also have Chou Spring Pearl, I'd have to check.

It's especially hard when you're really shy/socially anxious so you're scared to initiate conversations, even about things like AG or MLP. At least I found this site and this particular forum to discuss the things I like! It's easier than, say, messaging people directly. But even for outgoing people it seems to be hard to find ways to indulge your interest in AG.

There's also almost no fan art of AG! Not much that I can find, anyway.

I love to watch agoverseasfan's videos on Youtube, they're pretty relaxing yet entertaining.

They're not even sewing underwear on the dolls exactly. Its even worse: the doll's butts are going to be pink and there's no way around it :/

Leafy, that's an awesome Girls of Many Lands collection! Kathleen, Minuk, Chou, Saba, and Neela are all on my wishlist. I'm hoping to get Minuk sometime this year before winter hits again. I may hate winter but she'd look great in the snow!

I agree, its really hard. I'm glad there's at least a handful of AG collectors here on the Arena to talk with. People here are usually pretty nice and I've been posting in the Dollhouse for years. I suppose that's one benefit to not being able to join any of the actual AG forums!

I found one user who made a good bit of AG art (and by "good bit" I mean maybe ten pieces) on dA and Tumblr, but that's about it. There's really not much.

AG box opening videos are a total weakness of mine. Its exciting! I like craft videos too, but I mostly watch MyFroggyStuff for those.

How does changing the body of the doll so that it looks like they're wearing underwear cut costs when they are making a different colored fabric for the bottom of doll body?

My favorite characters are Samantha and Kirsten. I'm excited about Felicity's books being released as I've never read hers. I've been wanting read Mary Ellen's books but only have the first one and my Barnes and Noble only carries the latest AG books now.

Like I'd expect that sort of plastic on the Willie Wishers just due to the price bracket those are marketed at. The regular dolls, not so much. Mattel just loves to shoot themselves in the foot I guess. :(
Title: Re: American Girl

Even Wellies shouldn't have plastic like that. $60 is a huge amount for a doll. At that price they should still be made of high quality, sturdy vinyl.

Is that Nanea (sp?)? Does she have a new mold? I wonder who that asian doll is? Obviously a character, but I'm intrigued. FB Live isn't something I can do but I wonder if they'll continue to ignore/deny the problems and complaints.

Nanae is the 1940's Pearl Harbor character - she's Hawaiian.  Being Released in June....

But New Shiny will not distract me from my boycott.  :(  I will have to wait and see what kind of body type Nanae ends up with.... and wait to see if she ever goes on our local sales site when some little girl changes her mind or cleans out her dolls.

Nanae is really cute, but like lovesbabysquirmy said, I'm going to wait to see what kind of body they give her. Even if she has the new body, I suppose someone could match her skin tone with an older body and do a switch if they wanted to. *shrugs*

It's cool to see that they're bringing Felicity back! That dress though...  >_<

It could be a prototype and to save cost on those they use cheap vinyl?

It is not a prototype Nana's husband bought her at the Orlando store as a Valentine's Day present for Nana. Here's a video Nana made.

That doll was sold at a store, I think someone mentioned Orlando? But I don't know for sure. I'm not on AGPT. If its a prototype, they messed up BAD letting it get sold in a store. And even worse for literally calling the buyer a liar.

Nanea is the Pearl Harbor doll I mentioned before. Her story is set in 1941 Hawaii. She does have a new face mold. She'll be released this fall, most likely Aug.

The Asian doll is Suzie "Z" Yang. She is the star of AG's Z Crew videos on You Tube. She is a modern Korean American. She is going to be released this spring.

Sorry to show up suddenly and spew negativity, but I've been collecting AG dolls since the 80s, and I am SO MAD about the underwear thing! First, that underwear is so ugly. My dolls have always been happy to, uh, go commando. I will not be buying any of the new dolls with permanent underwear. Just no way. I'll just have to buy older dolls from a 3rd party (which is what I have always done, TBH, except for my very first doll, but I've always wanted to go into a store and buy a doll and have a little shopping spree with her). I honestly feel like AG has been going quickly downhill lately. Probably since they started retiring their best dolls. They're waaaay less about education and more about making sales now.

But I am thinking about going to a store and picking up the "new" Felicity. At least it seems that she won't be wearing stupid underwear.

Also, the new boy doll... so I'm weird. I want a butch lesbian AG doll. I'm thinking about getting him and pretending he's a girl. All of the other dolls have always been soooo girly. That pink underwear is just another step in the girliness of AG dolls.

Again, sorry for throwing up negativity in a thread I rarely visit... but I just had to rant a little.

No need to apologize for negativity here, ringwraith10! Its really not a shock to have people "come out of the woodwork", so to speak, over this and I don't mind at all. I'm pretty angry myself. I still can barely believe they're really doing all of this. Honestly, its just totally mind boggling. It doesn't even make sense; how could these stupid bodies even be cheaper?

Ugh... I'm so upset about Nanea. I really hope they reverse these awful changes before her release. She's everything I've ever wanted in an AG doll that Maryellen didn't cover. Her new mold takes everything I love about the Classic mold and just makes it better. Sweeter smile, big doe eyes, beautiful hair, lovely coloring, beyond adorable outfit... she's just perfect. Its kind of crushing to finally see good photos of her after all of this. I want her so badly but I'm not going to support AG at all in this. I'm just going to squirrel away whatever I can of Maryellen's collection off of Amazon and be done buying direct if they don't change. A secondhand Nanea, if the vinyl quality is good, might eventually happen though.

Felicity though... I don't think I'm even going to bother or care. I'd rather just buy secondhand. Its a relief that it seems they didn't decide redheads are gross and stick her in a brunette wig. I was pretty worried there for a while. But people were saying she doesn't even get a collection? No thanks. I don't really like her new meet dress anyways. But that saves me money, so yay I guess :/

Word from AG on new characters and underwear.

So is Josephina going to be phased out/retired soon? She's been my top want forever and I've never gotten her. I was thinking I would get her as a gift for myself when I finally graduate, but unless I can find a really nice secondhand doll I probably want to get a new(ish) one. Of course, this all depends on quality and underwear issues. :/

I haven't heard any rumors about Josefina retiring; just a little speculation that AG might retire her if they come out with another Latina doll. Addy is pretty much guaranteed to go at this point and Samantha is another suspect. Rebecca has come up in talks but since she's getting new stuff soon I think she's safe for now.

*some positivity*  :)

Oh!  Nanea is so pretty.  And I could really use an Asian doll (as could the BeForever line.)  :)  Anyone know when is she being released?  I may just wait for her...

I also like Felicity's new dress colors.

Really?  Are they finally releasing stuff for Rebecca?  :frolic:  My Beckie has been wearing Samantha's stuff lately; I've been wanting to get her new clothes (I'm an AG timeline purist through and through.)  This makes me very happy.  :)

scarletjul - Yep! :D She's getting a dress and a totally adorable little game set. I'm not huge on the dress but I adore the games.

ringwraith10 - Good luck figuring things out! Its a bit stressful right now. I wish I had the cash to order Rebecca before there's a chance for her to be changed.

My advice is to buy what you can from the Historical lines - they may be  retired soon, as they aren't supposedly getting new permapanty bodies, but that could also be AG marketing speak for "We plan on retiring them, so we don't have TWO types of doll bodies for people to switch around if they don't want our NEW dolls."

yes they released some new stuff for the Historicals,  BUT they did that with everyone before they retired them - trying to capture a few more sales, but in limited quantities, knowing they aren't ordering more....

I took all my GC for Chapters Indigo (the Canadian retailer who took the dolls into their locations), sealed them in an envelope and shoved them at the back of my desk.  No dollies for me.  *Grump grump grump*  If my dolls get more things, it's because they are handmade by someone or they are OG brand.  :)

I just want to point out that Felicity will only be sold at the flagship stores. (Chicago, NYC and LA) I see you're in GA. She will not be sold at the Atlanta or either of the FL stores. Sorry. she will be available online though.

Well that's horrible quality control :(

Well for everyone here I am going to the sale this summer, at least plan too. My parents health isn't the best so it's hard to tell this far out in advance for sure. They are going to be releasing an item and price list closer to the sale so I can possibly pick up dolls for members here. I think this year is going to be huge with this change people are going to be trying to get any dolls without the underwear change at the sale.

I may take you up on that. Last year they had Ivy's Meet accessories. I really wanted those, but on AGPT it's against the rules to ask someone to pick you up something from the MCM sale.

Understandable I suppose, don't want to flood the sale with resellers. I'll be by myself so I can't pick up too much only what I can carry  I'll message you closer to sale. Like I said dunno what my situation will be like come summer. Could have stable family or we could be back to every few days in ER visits again.

Melody's PJs arrived today! Amazon is pretty much picked clean as far as outfits go but I've been dying for this set. Maryellen is still in winter hibernation mode (AKA hiding in her box in the closet) so I got Lena to try it on. The buttons are amazing. They're plastic but textured in such a way that they feel like fabric-covered buttons. When I realized this my brain was confused for a moment because its so convincing, haha.

I grabbed Maryellen's crinoline this morning. Does anyone know if they plan to restock the stuff on Amazon? Pretty much all the outfits are gone at this point.

I think I'll go for Wellie Wishers at TRU next. There was another video of a new doll with thin vinyl so I'm still worried.

I almost always get the dolly PJ's when I get a doll.... but Melody's just don't seem worth the $32 CAD to me.... even if the fabric print is pretty sweet.

Of course I say this because I have four GIANT Rubbermaid tubs piled high with fabric.  And a small person who outgrows things, so I always have a supply of fabric on hand to DIY.

I really wish they'd learn to advertise these things literally anywhere, but AG Playthings is back open for registration! :D I have no idea when this happened since it wasn't announced anywhere non-members can see but I'm excited. I think it said approval may take 3-4 weeks but that's not too bad considering how long its been already.

I haven't actually checked Playthings in months cause I got annoyed with the wait, haha. Though I can't recall the last time I actually tried to sign up? Last poke around might have just been trying to find if there was any info about signups posted. I thought I might still be in the queue already since I never got rejection notices but nope. I wasn't really sure what to say in the "plead your case to the mods" bit. I was so excited it was actually open I just kind of fumbled through being excited xD

After a bit of debate I just signed up under my name, Carissa. I probably could've come up with something better but oh well! At least that username won't generate any weird nicknames the way something like "yellowstone" would haha.

Going to a special AG sale would be so dangerous for me. I would go for broke and fill up all my credit cards lol.  I heard that the company is in trouble.  To me, they are charging way too much now for things, maybe if they lowered prices a little bit it would help them.  Sometimes you can just charge yourself right out of business.

That article is poorly researched and honestly, kind of ridiculous. I stopped reading after 2-seconds-to-Google mistakes, purposeful half-lies to make Mattel look worse (they do bad enough on their own!), and the super cringey "recent history isn't REAL history".

Its an interesting idea but that writer did an extremely poor job with it.

I have 6 or 7 pleasant company AG dolls in a space bag in storage but they are ALL moldy. I'm hoping to someday find out how to save them but my hopes aren't high. I started reading this thread because my kids are getting interested in AG but I'm not spending that kind of money on these the way that they are now. At least my husband found a PC Addy in a dump trade shed (yes, seriously!) a few years ago and she was easy to clean up so my kids have that one. It's disappointing to see the quality dip so much at these prices.

What parts of the dolls have molded? Bodies, skin, hair, eyes? Do you have any photos? The Doll Hospital doesn't accept moldy dolls but I'm sure there's a way you can get them fixed up yourself, at least for display.

The vinyl (heads/arms/legs, different parts on each). The bodies don't have any visible mold but I'm less concerned about cleaning them than the vinyl since fabric is an easier beast to battle.

I got the new catalog today featuring Tenny and Logan. The historical dolls are only featured on a few pages and the only dolls shown are Mary Ellen, Melody, Julie, Kaya, Rebecca and Kit. Samantha, Addy and Josefina are only shown on the page that features the mini dolls. Felicity is not shown at all. That really surprises me since she was just released.

They switch off which characters they feature in the catalogues. They haven't done full catalogue spreads in many, many years.  Usually Kaya, Addy, and Josefina switch off.

And the focus has been on the TrulyMe/modern doll line for many years as well.  They really don't advertise the historical dolls much - people vaguely know about them but end up buying a TM doll instead.

Felicity is online and NYC/LA/Chicago only, so not surprising she's not in the catalogue.

I remember the days when each historical doll was in the catalog along with outfits the child could wear to match her doll.  There were like three or four outfits per doll for a child to choose from.  They even had to period shoes as well.  The catalogs were thick and showed most of the best parts of each doll's collection and accessories.

Hm, if you haven't already I'd say step one would be to take off their heads, throw away the stuffing, and remove their limbs. I'd probably restring them all even if their string isn't moldy, just to be safe.

I found these and maybe they'll help. I don't know how up to date they are.

I miss the days of every doll, all the Historicals, getting their own two page spread with a lifesize (or so it seemed) photo of the doll in her meet. I remember being so mesmerized by those photos. Over and over I'd stare at them, inspecting all the different parts of their hair, eyes, and outfits. I really wish they still did that but at least the GotY gets them. Melody has one in her debut catalogue but I don't have Maryellen's to check. If she does that's a catalogue I'll have to buy!

When I was in kindergarten or first grade I cut out those centerfold size historical dolls and taped the pages together/stapled computer paper to the back and stuffed them with cotton balls. I played with them for like 6 months and that was what made my parents buy me a real one.

Re-joining the discussion late, but seeing the new Felicity has sparked renewed interest for me!  It's a shame about the body changes especially the cheap vinyl and sewn on underwear.  Thankfully Felicity won't be part of the perma-panties distribution, but I hope her vinyl won't be that awful squishy mess!  I'm kicking myself for not getting Lea last year when I was first looking at her; now I have resort to evil bay.  Nanea is definitely on my list too; her face is absolutely gorgeous!  Also, I can't help but feel slight obligation to get her since she represents my state, lol. :P

It's possible you'll get a body with the regular seam darts... but they have already switched over to the new fabric for Felicity bodies.... it's basically thick pantyhose.  :(

I can't find any instagram accounts to link you to pics, but they are on AG Playthings, under the "2 Versions of Tenney meet outfits" - because apparently, there is a nice version and then a super cheap version of her meet outfit!!!

AUGH I am so angry about all of this.  I am on total AG Boycott.

I was so annoyed about Tenney's meet that I missed your post, but I totally get what you mean! I don't even like Idaho but I've been wanting Kaya so bad to "represent" (probably because it drives me nuts when people shoehorn her as a strictly Oregon girl). Photos of her didn't really do it for me, which I found disappointing, and then I saw her in person... now I'm doomed! She's so pretty, and she'd be really fun to take around the state and to places like Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

Tenney wasn't on my list as well, but after seeing owner pics and box openings I'm slowly coming over!  I know I definitely want to get her other outfits and accessories.  She reminds me of Taylor Swift when she was making country music. ^_^  What's stopping me (besides funds) are all the defects people are finding with Tenney; meet outfit cuts like lovesbabysquirmy mentioned, new body with the smooth nylon that apparently has a chance to get picked by velcro, and thinned wigs (although AG has had this happen throughout the years).  There are several threads about Tenney on AGPT.  At least they have a no questions exchange policy, but I don't know about the new body.  I guess you can always buy an older body from the second hand market and switch them out.

Kaya is much more pretty in person!  When AG opened a temporary location in Honolulu to test the market here, I was able to see the Historicals in person.  I even toyed with the idea of getting Kaya and turning her into a Hawaiian girl since she looked the part with her hair down.  Instead, I ended up getting a Sonali from ebay and rewigging her.

Tenney has really been growing on me too. Probably not enough to own her (except maybe as a cheap TLC doll on eBay/Craigslist) but I really like her freckles and the Tenneys with lighter lips. The darker color is a nice change of pace, though some of them are definitely way too dark for my taste.

I think I figured out my issue with Kaya. Most of the ones I've seen appear to have absolutely no face paint at all, so they look like a blank unfinished doll. I saw one with a bit of color in her cheeks/lips and she photographed so well! Even though it was just a quick cellphone snapshot she looked great.

@Taxel I'm actually the opposite of you regarding Tenney's lips; I love the dark color!  It makes her brown eyes seem richer.  I think she's on my shopping list next.  I'm planning a trip to Disneyland in May and want to make a trip to the AG store in LA while I'm there.  At least that way I can hunt for the perfect Tenney in person.

You beat me too it! I'm already disappointed that the only clothes for historicals are Melody's things. Was hoping for Kit & Addy things.

You would think that they would have stuff for the dolls that their collections are being downsized, like Addy and Samantha. Although, Melody’s Fancy Floral Dress is on my want list. Too bad I live too far away....

Hi, everyone! I don't know much about current AG, but I have four from childhood that I just rehabbed. I found a Josefina at the flea market for $3 last weekend and bought her for my daughter. She also has a PC Addy that my husband found in a trade shed at the dump where we used to live. My kid has great AG luck, apparently.

My mom bought Kaya's new dress at the Indy store yesterday. After we got home she put the dress on Kaya. She laid her down for a bit and accidentally laid her on a newspaper. Now Kaya's new dress has ink stains on the back.  :(

What is her dress made of? The tag inside doesn't say. Any ideas on how to clean it?

Oh no!  I unfortunately don't have Kaya's dress so I have no idea how to clean it.  It looks like it might be suede?  Hopefully someone will know!  Good luck!

It's a lot like leather, but it's fake leather.

AUGH so sorry to see that!

try some of these tips:

Looks like you can try gentle baking soda, or dish soap on a damp rag...  GOOD LUCK!

Thanks! I'll try that once it dries. I just tried baby wipes. It helped but didn't completely remove it.

I tried the baking soda. It didn't really do anything. I'll try the dish soap tomorrow.

The dish soap worked! It's not completely gone, but it's 99% gone. Mom and I are both happy with the results. Thank you to all who replied with suggestions.

Too bad they don't sell just the outfits and accessories for Kit, being that I already have a Kit doll.

I always wanted one as a kid but they were too expensive. Last year I found Samantha and Kirsten dolls (original makers) at Savers. I snatched them up and had a blast neatening them up and kept them for a while to fulfill my dream.

I sold Samantha to a guy on ebay who actually picked her up from me to give to his daughter in time for her birthday. How sweet! Right before he drove off he told me that his daughter wanted to customize it to make it a boy - nooooooo!! I was mortified that my doll was to be butchered by a 10 year old. As long as she/he is loved though I guess :x

Kirsten is still for sale. I hope she has a better fate!

Congrats! My mom has been collecting the minis since I grew out of my dolls. Plus we have 10 historicals we don't need anymore! I've since claimed a display shelf in the living room to display my Addy & Kit I'm hoping that everyone just likes it enough to make it a permanent display and rotate out outfits for the seasons/holidays.

I walked into Toys R Us today intending to buy something small from AG, like an outfit or accessory set, sort of like a nice way to say goodbye before the mayhem hits our store.

That's not what I walked out with.

Unfortunately the sun was already set by the time we got home so every photo is awful but I'm so thrilled to finally have Willa! It was awesome to get to pick her out in person without an insanely long trip to another state. Getting my second ever non-mini AG doll at Toys R Us was really cool and I'm glad I'll have that memory :D

Thanks! I'm so happy with her :D But you're right, they're like Pringles! I've wanted Emerson since release as well but now I think I need Kendall too... and all the clothes... and most of the accessories... I may be just a little bit obsessed.

My most recent AG is a Truly Me that I treated myself to for a late birthday/early Christmas gift last year. I'm disappointed that she came with 'perma-panties', but she's still really cute and my first contemporary doll. (Pants! She has pants on!)

She might even be my favorite. I created a short little backstory for her and everything. But shhh! Don't tell my other dolls!  :good:

Luciana is very tempting... as well as Nanea. I guess I'm just lucky that I have no more room for 18inch dolls at the moment.

You can send her into the Doll Hospital for the perma-panty fix...

If anyone's local TRU is still open, I definitely recommend stopping by if you're interested in any of the AG items they sold! At mine the leftovers (WW accessories and stage) were marked down 60%. I got Kendall and Willa's original accessory sets for around $10 each. I wish I'd been able to check earlier but I'm really happy those sets were still in stock.
