Title: Your Favourite Song Quotes!
Post by: Broken Irishwoman on July 28, 2019, 12:12:30 PM
I would love to read all your favourite quotes from songs! :D

_______________________________________

I have many, but the first one that comes to mind is one from a song by Christy Moore, called Natives (he didn't write it, but I love Christy Moore, so I say he did!). It's one of those lines that hit the nail on the head, gives you goosebumps and teaches you something. It's this line:

"Only the very safe can talk about wrong and right,
Of those who are forced to choose, some will choose to fight"

This is something I didn't really realise before, at least not actively. But it says everything; it's so easy to have an opinion about everything, but what if you were in someone's shoes who is in no position to think about "wrong" and "right"? It really puts you in your place...

I really like the song "Here I Stand" by Off Kilter.

In a world that’s changing, don’t lose sight, stand your ground
Even if you have to fight
Your time will come that unknown day
You can’t let your feelings stand in your way

I love the whole song and I totally recommend listening to it.

Sort of a silly one for now... I'll try to think of some serious ones later. :P

"Bebop skippity tippity tap those toes" - "Bloom" by Between The Buried and Me

The fact that Tommy sings that line with harsh vocals makes it even more amusing.

For nature hates virginity
I wish to be touched
Not by the hands of where’s and why’s
But by the Oceans’ minds

From Nightwish's the Riddler on the album Oceanborn.

And wind by night in northern lands
Arose, and "Lord" it cried
And drove the ships from ancient strands
Across the streaming tide

From Summoings Across the streaming tide on the album Oathbound

I primarily listen to orchestra renditions of soundtracks, so there aren’t many lyrics. However, I am a fan of this one YouTuber- Lord Bung. He is an animator and makes the scp confinement series. And relatively recently he released a project titled fine and dandy, a song/animation showing the growth and some evolution of the main character. If you’re a fan of scp content and want something a bit lighter than most scp items, check it out. I often find myself using various lines from the song as mantras in my life. Lately, it’s been the chorus.
Hey ho, here he goes
Either a little to high, or a little to low
Got low self-esteem and vertigo
But he thinks he's fine and dandy
Hey ho, here he goes
Either a little to far, or a little to close
He's pretending, but everybody knows
He thinks he's fine and dandy

I think it’s because it relates a lot to my mental health. I can’t ever quite get it right, I go a bit too far or too close, but I always try to think I’m fine and dandy. Even when I’m clearly not fine or dandy. It helps me a lot actually.

And you sink,
You can’t breathe
In an ocean of grey
memories fade

And you lose
All you’ve gained
All your triumphs in vain
black thoughts remain

Bury your name,
Forget your face.
Time, out of place.
Oceans of grey

All of your joy,
All of your pain
Emotions drained.
Oceans of Grey.

Probably too many to list. Music is really important to me - and I've written stories before based around characters inspired by the lyrics of one or other song.

Some of them would have to be translated though, and lose something in the translation :/

So, so many songs are important to me. Many bands and groups, but I can think of a few I can share.

There will come a soldier,
Who carries a mighty sword
He will tear your city down,
O lay o lai, o Lord!
O lay, o lai, o lay o Lord!
He will tear your city down,
O lay, o lai o Lord!

-Soldier, Poet, King by the Oh Hellos

Even now, you mark my steps,
Lovely Bitter Water,
All the days of our delights are poison in my veins!
And I know I shouldn't love you,
I know...

-Bitter Water by the Oh Hellos

That day I prayed for your embrace
Graced my face with tears since I knew you won't hear
Anything I plead,
But I won't walk away,
By your side, hold me tight, always!
Lonesome souls, connected by a broken pulse
Take some solace in the fact,
We've all lost things we treasured most!
Taking each step lightly,
Never say sorry for continuing to believe,
Our shared fate awaits,
So come with me!

-Mirai from the Madoka Magica Soundtrack.

Nice ones everyone! I'd love to read more. :D

I have more too, but I can't remember them now.  >_< So I'll go with an obvious one (so obvious it doesn't even need to be mentioned), In The End by The Cranberries. Even though they are my most loved band for many reasons, their lyrics aren't generally their strongest point (bad fan, bad fan! :shakefist: ). But this one sends chills down my spine for obvious reasons:

"Ain't it strange,
When everything you wanted was nothing that you wanted,
In the end...

Take my house,
Take the car,
Take the clothes...

But you can't take/tame the spirit!"

It's "take" in one chorus, "tame" in another. Both versions are equally strong, that's why I wrote it like that. It says everything.

One of my favorite songs right now also has some wise lyrics. Best selflove/breakup song, imo ;)
More people need to know about Bryde, so here's the video, too.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b5_Um_6iKNA

I could quote the entire song, but here is my favorite part:

What do you love if you don't love yourself?
You'd haul your darkness into someone else
You're just waiting for it all to end
And it gets bitter in the end, my friend

If you can't help yourself
No one else will help you out of this
If you can't help yourself
No one else is gonna fall for this

I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life and leave me alone

 Billy Joel - My Life

It was my choice to move to China. As much as it infuriates me at times, My quality of life is better here then the USA.
Shut up and leave me alone.

Music has a very strong presence in my life, so there's definitely too much to list, but here's one short line that I am really resonating with on multiple levels:

"Until later doesn't always come"

It's from the song 'Cut Here' by The Cure, one of my favourite bands since my early teens. One of the hings I love the most in them is that they have at least one song for every mood I can think of, but being the huge procrastinator I am, this line is something I could tattoo on my forehead, so that I can see it everytime I look into a mirror. The song tells a story of meeting someone again after a long time, and through this story the song laments about situations of wanting to do something, but for some reason (valid or not) not having the opportunity to do them at that time. It is such a strong song for me because it sheds light on the fact that procrastinating many times really actually means risking totally losing out on that opportunity. It reminds me of missed opportunities, light as not buying those two blind bag figures in that shop in Geneva, and heavy as not rushing to the hospital on that night to visit my mother who did not live to see the next morning, thoughts of missed opportunities that still haunt me after long years. This song slaps me in the face just as hard as it did 18 years ago when I first saw it on TV.

You can read the full lyrics here, and there's also an embedded video if you scroll down if you want to listen to it:

Hold tight to yourself
don't let nobody give you hell
your life is sacred
live it right, but live it your way
– "This is What I Believe In", Adrian Belew

When faith gives way to fear
When motivation disappears
All is lost if one abandons Hope
All is lost
If one abandons Hope
– "Hope", Klaatu

And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love
You make
– "The End" The Beatles, lyrics by Paul McCartney

These are the lyrics that tend to bring out all the feels for some reason.  :P

Once upon a dream I think I lived inside a fairy tale.
When someone great was lost, when some dark void was crossed,
And I was tossed in my sleep.

-Wildfire Cartoon

Did the stars come out? Did the world spin round?
Does it matter that much when you're ten miles down?
In the light that filters down
Into my giant yellow eye
I can see the sails unfolding
Stretching white against the sky and I forgive them
I forgive and I let go

I Crush Everything
Jonathan Coulton

Sit beside the breakfast table
Think about your troubles
Pour yourself a cup of tea
And think about the bubbles
You could take your teardrops
And drop them in a teacup
Take them down to the riverside
And throw them over the side
To be swept up by a current
And taken to the ocean
To be eaten by some fishes
Who were eaten by some fishes
And swallowed by a whale
Who grew so old, he decomposed

Think About Your Troubles
Harry Nilsson

Down... to the bottom...
Hello... is there anybody else here?
It's cold... and I'm so lonely...
Hello... is there anybody else here?

Hello... won't you throw me down a life line?
I'm so afraid of darkness
And down here, it's just like night time...

Life Line

I forgot to add the intro-song to Firefly! I always sing along to this one

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me

There's no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me...
