Title: stupid things sellers do (tell me)
Post by: kingluke on May 29, 2018, 11:29:08 PM
Hello,

I was eyeing this huge mlp g1 lot on kijiji.ca for a great deal.
I talked to the seller and everything seemed fine. I just had to pay her.
Then she ignores me for 2 days and tells me the ponies are all sold!
I know, I know, they were hers and I don't have anymore rights then anyone else, but where's the style in ignoring a potential buyer for 2 days and then dumping them like that.
So tell me, what kind of dumb and terrible sellers have you had in your days? I would love to hear, feel free to vent a bit :)

Thank you and see ya,

Luke

A couple years back, I bought a pony that was supposedly in mint condition according to the seller's listing. When the pony arrived, I found she had two or three age spots and her one eye was scuffed (she was a twinkle eye). None of these issues were mentioned in the listing and they were not displayed in the photos. I expressed my dissatisfaction to the seller. She agreed to a partial refund but didn't send it. I followed up with her and she made multiple excuses, guilt trips, etc....even going as far as to say she hasn't had the time (yet she had time to reply with these excuses). This went on for a week or so. Finally, I told her she had 48 hours or I would open a case with Ebay for the item not being as described. Then I suddenly got my refund.

I never understand why sellers think this is a good idea, surely it's common knowledge that ink transfers?

With ponies and otherwise, I have had so much trouble with items being listed as "good condition" when they turn out to have some really nasty flaws or, worse still, are really filthy! The sheer amount of grime that came off my Posey is probably going to haunt my nightmares forever, not to mention the saddle she was sent with - talk about gross!
Another real howler is when the seller marks a pony as dispatched, it doesn't turn up, so you contact them and then get a message back "Oh sorry, I forgot to post it." :pout:

I bought a lot of ponies of Kijiji where the seller had SS Heart Throb listed separately but pictured with the ponies I was buying.  I asked about Heart Throb as she wasn't with the rest and they explained that they wanted $25 for her and that it was a sale for charity etc etc.  I didn't want to spend the money so I told them not to bother fetching her for me to look at.  They did have to get another bag of ponies that were
missing from the listing.  I checked them over, bought the ponies, all is well, right?

Later that day I get an email demanding (nicely) that I return Heart Throb right away.  Again it was stated that this was a sale for a charity and that she was being sold separately and that there's anothe buyer coming for her.  I politely responded that I hadn't even seen her when picking up the other ponies and that I hoped they find her.  To this day I occasionally wonder if she ever turned up.

Oh eeek! How awkward for you!

Here I haven't really had people do terribly strange things. The weirdest (except for sellers wanting higher and higher prices for common ponies) was someone who had a lot of haircut childhood ponies. They also wanted a lot of money for them, and at first refused when I offered what I though they were worth. Then suddenly, late at night, they changed their mind and said that as long as I took all of them I could have them for just slightly more than what I had offered so I agreed. All went fine after that, they were lovely and dropped the ponies off for me and everything.

I saw a MO Baby Ember I was interested in on Ebay once and sent a polite message to the seller asking about flaws that were not visible in the listing. I got a angry reply back that said “It’s an old toy, of course it’s going to be dirty!”

Last year someone was selling some petite pony houses and accessories on Ebay. There was also a G1 Brush Me Beautiful Boutique shown in multiple pictures in the listing. I figured that whoever was selling them must not have realized that the Brush Me Beautiful Boutique was actually for full sized ponies. I bid and won the lot but when it arrived I only got the petite pony items and not the Brush Me Beautiful Boutique. When I contacted the seller they seemed  surprised and said they would try to find out what happened. They sent me another message saying that had made a mistake and meant to list the Brush Me Beautiful Boutique seperately. They did honor the sale and send me the playset  but mentioned a few times that their SO was angry that they had to send me the playset.

Doing what I just did, not shipping an item out for a few days. I'm sorry, I got sick!  :yikes:
I haven't had any real horror stories, thankfully. I did order a Glory with her backcard and breathed the loudest breath of relief when I saw she was in a box instead of a mailer. I've heard too many stories about MoC ponies getting their cards folded right in half for shipping. Good on you, seller!

A few months ago I bought a G3 playset that came with a couple of ponies. I was expecting one variant of Skywishes, and ended up with another. Not too big of a deal since I didn't have any version of her, but what made me mad was the fact that her hoof had been chewed, which was not mentioned in the description.
The same ponies came with their hair taped to their bodies and it left a nasty residue that only came off with nail polish remover.

That suggests to me they're unaccustomed to soft-plastic dolls like ponies. Lots of other stuff like porcelain, hard-plastic toys like Transformers, etc. can be packed wrapped in newspaper just fine.

I can only recall two bad experiences right now. One was a long time ago... I got G1 Surprise Mommy, she had been poorly wrapped in some tissue paper and in that horrible big brown tape that we use for packages. That tape was all around her symbols on both sides... I immediately disliked the pony just because of this. I complained to the seller but didn't leave a neg (was on Ebay). It wasn't actually until very little ago when I decided to part with her that I carefully attempted to remove the tape, glue and stains and I succeeded! Her new owner was so happy.

Second was just last week, a website that allows you to make offers around 4 or 5 times. I was offering on a lovely htf G1 Spain set which was way overpriced -seller is not a MLP collector just a toy reseller-. I knew they would say no at first offer 'cos if they have no clue, that's what they'd say... and so it was. I got a price suggestion which I declined and made another one slightly higher than the previous... and it was accepted. Just a bit after I get a message from the seller saying "oops I accepted by accident. However this set is worth 3 times its price it's a great deal, so if you want it for this price it's yours". Yeah right... as if you would know! And what happened next? She relisted for even higher than it was originally... let me tell you it's still hanging around at the site!

On another note, when I started selling I scr*wed up once! I was very very new into collecting and had a MIB Megan and Sundance set. It seems I took a stock photo online and sold it. When it reached its destination buyer tells me it's not the one on the picture, but another version... of course it was my mistake, I had no clue back then! She wanted the set in any case so I made a partial refund which buyer was happy about. That taught me that no matter what, I would always list my own photos, no matter if they aren't the best but at least you make sure it's the right item! I was so sorry and embarrassed that happened!

I had a seller wrap my newly bought WHITE shampoodle in newsprint...that was fun to clean -_-

I also had an etsy seller who was selling MIB Flutter Ponies lie to me for 2 weeks saying my items had shipped from Cananda, giving me fake tracking numbers and eventually just closing her etsy shop. I think I only put in a case once it came out on the arena :(

Bought a pony off ebay and an empty package arrived. The same happened with a rare MH doll. I got no refund as the sellers shipped with the cheap German book/other wares option. With this option it's not allowed to seal the package completely and therefore stuff falls out all the time or someone just steals the contents.

I got wise and now I explicitly tell sellers to give me another shipping option. Enough is enough.

Baby Hopscotch. She was perfect apart from the fact she stank. She even had factory curls.  :yikes:

Ugh... I've had a few doozies... but the winner in most recent memory was winning an ebay lot (buy now) for a pretty good price (some nice ponies in there too) and then getting messaged by the seller to say they'd only posted part of the lot because they'd underestimated the shipping, and that if I wanted the rest, I'd have to pay the shipping for them separately!

I expressed my, shall we say, disappointment.. but in the end (and not wanting to cause a fuss) let it go, since after asking for pics of the ones left out, it appeared they'd excluded the ones that seemed in less than stellar condition or fakies. And the important ones I was after had been included.

BUT then... to add insult to injury, the ponies that did arrive were in appalling condition that absolutely was NOT obvious in the pics... I'm talking hair that had conveniently covered missing wings on wingers, really bad hair chops on other ponies and ponies with horrid, irreparable chew marks including Baby Lucky Leaf's face split in two (she was bad side down in the photos). Again I stress all these flaws were hidden in the photos.

By this stage I'd had enough. And I was met with utter rudeness along the lines of what did I expect from old toys? I can't remember the exact dialogue now but it was epic and quite astonishing. I eventually (and not without a fight) got a partial refund, and they got some positively negative feedback from me.

A few people already know about my lamp shade nightmare.  Wrapped in paper instead of a box.  Yes, seriously.

I also once bought a g3 Christmas ornament and after 2 weeks it still hadn't arrived which is very odd for a seller also in Australia.  It shouldn't have taken more than a week.  They replied and said they had sent it out yesterday.  Another week passes before it arrives.  Checked the postage stamp date - 3 days after I messaged them.  All they had to say was that they were sending it out tomorrow and apologise for the delay.  Don't be lying when you're sending me proof of your lie.

On a similar note, I once bought a g1 book on ebay and it hadn't shown up after 2 weeks or so but I had partly forgotten about it.  The seller sends me a message asking why I haven't contacted her yet.  The book had been returned to her several days ago because she wrote down the wrong house number.  She was a little hostile as if it was somehow my fault.  Who knows why she didn't contact me herself when she got it back.  She asked me to confirm the house number before she sent it again.  It was the same number that was saved as my postage address.  She just wrote down 25 instead of 35.

Oh, another one.

I once bought flutters on FB, through the swedish group. (I think this member has since been banned from selling there?)
This was also a bad case of 'bad side down'. I asked for more pics of the ponies I was buying, got some, but they still didn't show the flaws. Now, I get the ponies - not super fast, took her a while to send them out - and open the first one... who has the tips of her ear cut off, and looks like someone's been hacking away at her in places with a pair of scissors... plus dents in all hooves (probably scissors again...). One of the other 2 ponies had slight dents in the hooves as well, but it didn't show as much. The third came out fab after a spa, but still. I didn't pay nothing for them either, and when I messaged her about it, she said she would look for a replacement for me but then vanished. Also after admin involvement.
I'm still kind of bummed about it to be honest >_>

Oooh, that lamp shade! So sad to see that.

I personally never had any really bad experiences with pony sellers. However, there has been one occasion where I really wasn't happy. About ten years ago I bought a pony here on the Arena, and when she arrived it turned out her eyes obviously had been repainted, which wasn't mentioned anywhere. Not only that, but she was missing one of the white dots on her eyes, too. Nothing too bad, I mean, it's nothing I can't fix myself. But the thing is, she came from a very well established seller, so you can imagine I was very disappointed. I just didn't expect this, I never thought they'd hide something like that.

I feel terrible just seeing a picture of the lampshade.

One time I bought a pony from a seller with great feedback. She was my top most wanted pony at the time. I waited several days and the pony didn't arrive. I messaged the seller and they assured me that the pony had been mailed. Several more days later the pony finally arrives but is postmarked just a few days before instead of the original mailing date the seller told me. I've never figured out if the pony got caught somewhere in the post office or if the seller forgot to mail it and instead of admitting that just lied when I asked.

RIP lamp shade  :bawl:

I once bought an eBay lot of NM So-Softs that arrived crammed inside a small bubble envelope with no extra wrapping. When I took them out, their lovely thick flocking was pockmarked all over with indents from the bubbles. It was nerve-wracking trying to smooth out their cowlicks without loosening the flocking too much.

I just won a great deal on ebay-

But the seller cancelled the listing because he didn't get enough for it- what a jerk!  I posted a thread about it on one of my dolly forums, and it turns out he is famous for doing exactly that.   -_-

He also is known for scamming people so I guess I got lucky.

I wouldn't exactly call it a bad experience, but once when I was binge buying all the mail order Embers, I was having a hard time finding the pink one in well condition. I finally found one that made me happy. Ember looked beautiful in her photograph, but the only thing that worried me was the description only said something along the lines of "Vintage -- in good condition" then mentioned shipping and stuff like that. But she was being sold for a good price, seemed to be perfect, and I was desperate. So I ordered her.
It was only about three days later when I get her. At first I didn't notice anything bad, but when my other Ember's got shipped I noticed something odd...Is her hair shorter than the others? Upon closer inspection, yes it was, and while  that wouldn't bother me too much it's just the fact that it wasn't mentioned. Then I noticed something else odd. I don't know why, but this one day I got this strange idea to twist her head just to see if it'd move. Surprise surprise, it did move. So someone both removed this pony's head and trimmed the hair without listing it...
It wasn't awful but I wish it would've been mentioned. It still bugs me to this day.

Along with that I once got a Bridal Beauty with tail rust that wasn't listed, but I didn't hold it against the seller as they didn't seem to be professionals with ponies. But it was impossible to tell from the pictures so a tiny bit of me wonders if they did it on purpose.

But generally I have a really good experience with sellers. They're usually super nice and pack little stickers or notes with my ponies.  ^.^

I had once spent 2 days working out details with a seller on Craigslist for my mom to pick up some ponies for me. I we had everything all set. I gave her my mom's phone number to set the meeting time and place (my mom is over 500 miles away from me but near the seller). They did that. Anyway the night before she ended up telling my mom she decided she didn't like the price we had agreed on and that she wasn't going to sell the ponies instead of telling me.

i had a similar experience with a seller cancelling and refunding an agreed sale (don't think it was with the same seller).
I sort of joked at the time that maybe Fate had something special around the corner.

Anyways, Karma was actually looking after me, for a month later I found the same ponies in a lot for the same price with a different seller. And not only were the ponies I was originally searching for really lovely,  they came in a lot with a couple of extra ponies including the prettiest 'Peachy' I've ever seen.........didn't realise until I gave her a bath that she's actually Macau Nelly!
So, sometimes things are for the best if they don't quite work out.

I hate that sellers these days cancel auctions so easily for a higher bid. It's all greed and it means you can't guarantee you are going to get something until you actually get it. I swear, I never talk about wins anywhere until they're in my hands. I just don't want to jinx them. Also there are dishonest people who will try and make private offers and unfortunately some sellers are that dishonest they accept.

My pet peeves for sellers:

- Sellers who lie about having an auction item and use a stolen image. Still really angry about an incident in Feb around my birthday which involved this.

-Sellers who put MOC items in padded mailers or just plain mailers. Had 2 ponies fall off cards over the years because of this. One was Wind Whistler (movie star) , the other watercolor Misty. I got a partial refund on WW. Misty I didn't bother about as it was abck in the days of sending cash and shr only cost $15, but still...I was trying then to get the whole set MOC but I gave up after that. Still  missing her and Wavedancer :/

- Sellers who lie. I won a MIB Baby Tic Tac Toe (a childhood pony) in her UK box some years back...seller claimed they sent it, it never arrived. Seller went trhough all these excuses and stuff, wanted to only partially refund me in case it returned to them, said they were busy moving - at which point I said, no, full refund please. If it arrives I'll paypal you. Of course it didn't arrive. STILL looking for Baby Tic Tac Toe in her UK box :/

-Sellers who list ponies at high prices saying they are rare but can't be bothered to clean or ID them first.

-Sellers who list G3 and G4 ponies in the pre-1990 category. No I don't want to scroll through pages of blind bags thank you.

- Sellers who list non MLP in the MLP category.

-Sellers who insist on using GSP or are just plain rude to buyers from overseas, as though being overseas makes you a scammer.

I also had my seller in Denmark some months back who insisted on messing me around with the postage cost over and over because she underestimated it on the auction. It took a couple of weeks to resolve. Finally I got the pony, but that's a seller I won't deal with again. She made out it was my fault she undercharged, my fault she'd decided to ship it a different way without asking me if it was appropriate...and then kept me waiting on shipping it to check details rather than just shipping the item to me.

stinky ponies and haircuts are nothing, man.  ;)

Some "highlights" of the Bad Trader List:

- the MIB Italian Dream Castle Re Unicorno fiasco
- the time a scammer sent a printed-out picture of the pony rather than said actual pony
- the Sugarberry Photoshop movement
- the time a scammer sent a lot of ponies in the mail, maliciously covered in glue
- the scammer that got away with $1000's of dollars related to Muffin Pony sales...

I’ve yet to have any problems with sellers, honestly these stories are so scary! I feel like I’ve been unrealistically lucky considering.

Honestly though I’m really hard to anger in situations involving sales. I understand that life can be busy and mistakes happen, really if you’re just honest with me I’ll probably be okay lol!

The Italian Dream Castle was advertised and sold as NRFB - you could not see the bonus pony without opening it.  naturally of course the seller had removed the pony and sold it separately.  only keen eyes, from collectors who had boxes on hand were able to say, "nope that is not factory seal" :(

The Sugarberry thing was a seller listing variant Sugarberries using images that had been edited in Photoshop.

The box of glue was a malicious act by Lexi (I think) because the auction sold for a lower price than had been expected.

Anybody else remember some Not Good Sales?

I believe it was Roy.

Also, we must not forget the Reverse Gusty fiasco with the girl who kept making her own reverse Gusty customs and trying to sell them for a mint on ebay. One of the main reasons I am always majorly suspicious of any 'new' RG turning up is because of the number of custom ones that got spewed into the ether back then.

Wrapping a pony in newspaper. During the overseas trip the ink had transferred onto the pony... Not just spots of ink, but actually readable text was on the pony's body! When I contacted the seller to complain, the only reply I got was that the pony was in perfect condition when it left her house. Nice

Was there a second Sugarberry photoshop incident at some point because as I remember it, there wasn't any intention to sell or financially scam someone. It was just a prank that went on way too long.

My favorite seller story is a bit complex, but well worth the telling.  I sometimes see people bringing up the most outrageous detail in these kinds of threads as it's become a bit of a pony community legend, but I'm the one it happened to:p

Apologies for the length of this.  It's pretty complicated, and the good stuff is in the details.

*cracks knuckles*

This happened way back in the early days of the community when ebay was a lot more of an online garage sale, and Paypal wasn't even a thing yet.

I was dating my now husband at the time, and we were doing a long distance thing.  It was around Valentine's Day, and I was a few days away from getting on a plane to visit him when I noticed a good Valentine's Pony(MOC SS Bangles - I thought her symbol was romantic) come up.  I had an arrangement with my sweetie with certain gift ponies - I was better on ebay and had the patience to watch the auction until the end, so I'd bid, but he'd pay for most gift ponies.  I'd get a price limit from him, and he'd just let me take care of the winning part.  After the auction was over, I'd tell him ending price and put him in touch with the seller.  They'd work the payment details out between them.  It was usually a money order since there was no Paypal, so there was a lot more interaction with the seller than there is now.

Anyway, this particular pony ended a few hours before I was supposed to be on a plane to visit him.  I ended up winning the pony, so I contacted the seller within minutes of it ending.  I told the seller what was going on and to contact [my guy's email address] for the payment, and then I emailed my guy with the important info about the seller, including their email address for him to contact her.  Then I left for the airport and was out of touch for 8ish hours.

To move this story along, I get to my guy's place several hours later and I eventually check my email.  The seller must've tried to contact me before reading their emails because the seller sent me the invoice and her payment info a few minutes after the auction ended.  Another, later email told me she had been paid and everything was fine.  My guy showed me his invoice email just to confirm that everything was good, and that's where things got weird.

The invoice he got was $20 more than the one I got.  The shipping quote the seller sent to *me* was already fairly outrageous for the time.  The shipping quote I got was over $10 at a time when a flat rate large Priority box was $3.50 to ship anywhere.  The shipping quote my guy got was $20 MORE than the already outrageous $10! $30+ to ship one pony! He had already paid for it by the time I arrived, so the deed was done.

I contacted the seller about this little "clerical error", and things just went to hell after that.  I asked her why my guy's invoice was $20 more than mine.  She never answered why my total was less, but she did tell me that the $20 was for "gas, wear and tear on her car, and lunch at McDonald's near the post office".

Yeah, you read that one right.  McDonald's.  That's some burger for $20 in 1999-2000 money!

Well, the money order was already in the mail, and there was no such thing as a partial refund back then, so we both just accepted that this seller was greedy and awful, and $20 was relatively cheap for a "don't ever deal with this seller again" lesson.

But the seller didn't stop there!  Oh no!

A few days later I get an email from the seller stating that something happened to the MOC Bangles I won, so she couldn't send it out anymore.  But I was in luck!  She had another one!  This one had a slightly better card than the one I won, so it was more of course.  I won that MOC Bangles for $50.  The new one was....$200.  FOUR TIMES as much!

This was still during the time of the cheap MOCs.  I've gotten MOC ponies for as low as $15 during this time, and $50 was on the higher end for a MOC Bangles already.  At the time, $200 could easily get you a Rapunzel, and you might even have enough left over for a Mimic to give you an idea of what she was asking.  Anyway, there was nothing wrong with anything in the pictures of the MOC I won, so I'd love to know why this one was 4 times as much.

I said no.  I said just send back the money order and it's over.  I consider it a personal triumph that I was able to refrain from telling her where she could stick that MOC Bangles of hers.

She got the money order the next day, and told us she sent it back.

We waited.  And waited.  And waited.  And waited. For 3 weeks we waited.

Finally, he got the money order back.  Why did it take so long?  She didn't open it and resend it with my guy's address and new postage.  No, that would cost her money and time.  Instead, she marked it "Return to Sender", so it got stuck in the postal system for weeks.  She couldn't even be bothered to pay the 30 cents for the postage to get an $80 money order back to us safely!  I guess we should've been grateful she didn't cash the money order and claim that it was stolen in the post:/

After asking around, I found out this seller did this kind of thing all the time.  If one of her auctions didn't end for what she wanted it to, she'd "lose" the item, or "her cat ate it", and she'd either relist it, or offer "another one" for a higher price.

A MOC Bangles popped up on her auction listings not long after I told her I wasn't paying $200 for the"better one she found".  It looked pretty darn close to the one that was "lost".  Suspiciously close.  It had a starting price of $200.

It sat on ebay for at least a year without ever selling.  Every now and then she'd email me out of the blue and offer it to me for the bargain price of only $200.  She did this for several years afterwards.  I only think she stopped because I stopped using that email address.

As far as I know, she never found a sucker to buy that MOC Bangles.

I haven't had anything quite that bad but a few problem ones:

In terms of overpriced Ponies I once saw a listing Glow asking $10,000

Having trouble working out where a package would be shipped and the seller opening an unpaid item case during negotiations.

Sellers holding an item and then dropping the hold because I took more than a day to reply

Sellers of foreign pony books asking around 10 times what they paid for it

When I first started collecting G1 Ponies a seller had a lot that had one Pony I really wanted and a bunch of others I wasn't interested in, I contacted the seller asking if they'd be willing to sell just that pony alone and they agreed, and it was much cheaper without the other Ponies. So they closed the original auction and I sent a message letting them know that I was going to be out of town the next day because of a previous appointment and asking if they could mark the listing as being for me (something I'd seen other sellers do) and gave a list of times I would be free in the next few days so we could work out a good time. They ignored the message and posted it in the middle of the afternoon the next day, without marking it as being reserved, and somebody else bought it; when I messaged them about it they said there was nothing they could do and that I should have been watching the page at a time I already told them I wouldn't be near the computer

An unpaid item case being opened and closed on a simple my little pony painting somebody had done and listed for $20 with shipping and selling it to somebody else because I took to long to reply; my aunt had been hospitalised the day after the listing ended, had to have major surgery, and nearly died. When I explained what had happened she said she could make me another for $200 "Because making the same picture twice isn't fun"

Buying an Equestria Girls Minis doll where the box ended up seriously damaged and the seller would only do a full refund with the item being sent back and would not do only a partial refund; I didn't do anything more because my dad was in the hospital....he DID die a few weeks later

Did you ever get the glue off of the ponies or were they just totally beyond repair?

@goddessofpeep - I definitely remember the McDonalds one :D I didn't realise it was you though. And you are right, MOC ponies then were a lot cheaper and $50 was a LOT for any MOC. Newborn twins were still only about $35 MIB back then so $200 was insane. Even now I think $200 for Bangles MOC would be insane, 20 years on...

@Duenia - Any mislabelling of generation annoys me, but more it annoys me when the words cutie mark or brony appear in a G1 auction title/description. The historian in me demands terms are correctly used and not anachronistically applied...

I have one more seller tale but it's not pony which is why I didn't think of it till now.

Back in about 2000-2001, when I was building my Jem collection, I was really trying to get a Jetta doll. Ironically Jetta wasn't sold in the UK and there were a lot of US only sellers back then. So I had a friend in the US who would take parcels for me. This was also prior to paypal as standard and stuff like that.

So anyhow, I won a really nice Jetta with her box and her accessories loose and proceeded to give the seller my friend's details. Normally I would do the paying but this seller was not just rude but seriously offensive. They refused to sell to me because I was a foreigner - even though I had a US address, they said all kinds of things about how dishonest foreign buyers were and that we were all scammers and that they didn't deal with overseas people at all.

This went on for a while because I did have a US address to ship to. Ultimately I got my friend in the US involved, and she said she'd deal with all of it.

Next thing I know...Jetta has been shipped to her address.

Some weeks later (delayed due to the lovely timing of the petrol strike which wreaked havoc with our post for some weeks back then) Jetta arrived at my house safely. And the seller had put in some extra bits that weren't originally in the auction.

I have NO idea to this day what my friend said to this seller to sort them out. But I imagine it was pretty darn scathing...

So yeah. Not an issue of not shipping internationally, but holding the general view that even communicating with someone not in the US was dirty and that we were all scammers by dint of our location.

It wasn't my transaction, it happened to someone else decades ago.  I have no idea what happened - it was superglue and you need acetone to dissolve that, so I don't know what the buyer was able to do with their ponies :(

An identical case - though not pony related - once appeared on Judge Judy. It was about a cell phone. Apart from her ripping the scamming seller a new one (and Rightfully so!), JJ also gave a great defense: the price asked corresponded to the general price paid for the actual object. Regardless of the seller's defense that she stated in the object description that it was an auction for a picture of the object, the price was deceiving and the determining factor to label the offer as an attempt to scam.

At one time, Hasbro US attempted to document the entire evolution of MLP on their website. (maybe it's still up?). Strangely enough, G2 had been completely erased from the lineup of pony generations. I remember going "WHUT?!?!" when I noticed it skipped from G1 to what we know as G3 (apart from a single and vague mention of the PC game Friendship Gardens - but nothing about the actual toys). For non-MLP connaisseurs it might be confusing to ID a pony they want to sell if even the manufacturer takes creative liberty on the history of the toyline.

I think they also could've got it from this (fan made?) MLP generation thing which showed the progression of the toys. Oddly enough G2 was missing from that but they labeled g3 as g2 or something weird like that and the current MLP blind bags were listed as G4.5. Maybe that's what confuses some people? I'm not sure.

I've recently had an issue with a seller actually. They said they would happily post the ponies to me and we agreed on an overall price. I payed and all was well and they seemed really nice and genuine. A week goes by and no pony mail had arrived, so I messaged them and they said that they hadn't got round to posting them yet, but promised that they would send them the following morning. Another week goes by and by this time I was getting a little impatient (it had been two weeks by then and second class only takes 2-3 days to arrive). I messaged them again and politely asked if they had actually even sent them. I got a really snotty and rude reply back basically saying that they would send them when they send them and they turned really quite, dare I say, abusive? towards me, saying that if i really wanted them I would collect them (They were way down south somewhere and I cant drive). Bare in mind that I'm still technically a minor, and the seller was an older woman.

Long story short, my dad went crazy, they never sent the ponies, I opened a claim through PayPal and was refunded my money.

I have since found the same ponies and have bought them for cheaper than what i originally payed, and they should be here tomorrow!

I bought a Moondancer from a garage sale once. She was in pretty bad condition (symbols almost gone, pink highlighter marks) but my first G1 pony find in the wild after I got back in to ponies. I brought Moondancer home and a little while later there's water coming around her. I cleaned it and went back a later and discovered more water and it it's coming from her tail hole (her tail was still attached) It turns out she had several inches of water in her.

I have another one, it's nowhere near as bad as my other story,  but it was still a little bit annoying.

When I bought my Crimp and Curl Hair Salon bundle for a fiver, I was originally sent the wrong thing. I thought the box looked a little small, but because I didn't know what was actually in the bundle, I didn't think much of it (the pictures were blurry, all I could see was a tabby cat).

When I opened it, there was two dolls and I was really confused. I contacted the seller and she was very apologetic and said that there must  have been a mix up with the labelling and actually refunded the payment cost to get it sent back. She said she would post the pony stuff straight away and that as an apology she had thrown in some more stuff she had found since I'd bought it (it was cherry sweets apron and some baby accessories, which I was really happy about seeing as been searching for the apron for years) for free.

Three weeks later the bundle I'd bought arrived via next day shipping. She said she'd posted it right away but the label said the day before. I was a little bit annoyed because the dolls had got back to her over two weeks before I got my pony mail, but at least I got it in the end!

Who else has bought ponies that don't mention a smell, and you get them and they wreak of smoke?

Baby Hopscotch. She was perfect apart from the fact she stank. She even had factory curls.  :yikes:

Oh dear! If you still have this otherwise perfect pony, the baking soda kitty litter trick works wonders. Pour baking soda cat litter into the bottom of a plastic container with a lid. Put a towel over the litter. Put the pony in the box and seal it up... then leave it alone for 6 months or so, longer if you must. Rotate the pony occasionally. If she's really, really bad and the above method doesn't help, you can stick her in a bag with kitty litter, or immerse her in it. After a while the pony should smell fine! I've fixed some pretty stinky ponies this way. You just have to be patient...

I haven't so much had weird seller interactions (the stinky ponies all came from Craigslist so I knew what I was in for) but once asked a buyer in a vintage toy shop how much he would offer for a very nice Skyflier. The place aims at a collector clientele, not kids. This Skyflier had perfect glitter and a ribbon. The buyer accused me of touching up her glitter (in fact he suggested it had been customization, since as far as I could tell he didn't even know some ponies came with glitter, then tried to cover by saying he'd never seen one that old with that much glitter) said he thought the bow was a replacement, and offered me three dollars cash, five dollars store credit. The glitter and bow were both original.

Betting you he'd have turned around and priced her for $20+ and boasted of the original ribbon had you sold her to him.

I have only two that I can remember at this moment.
One I was a newbie buyer. And I bought the collector set of ponies. I was really thrilled and excited but I got them like a month or two after I bought them. That made me worried and wondered why they took so long. :/
Two I got a lot of ponies once and they all had their heads glued on with like super glue. That was fun trying to clean those girls up. :/
None of them that I can remember are super bad thankfully.

I have had all relatively great sellers but when I'm searching for ponies online, people that can't be bothered to ID or even TRY when selling ponies do get me. I saw one of the flocked, paper-mache-material crap dollar store fakies the other day listed as an "unnamed vintage prototype MLP- very rare"
Seriously dude? Who do you think you're even fooling? It was priced at like $20+ or so. I see soo many fakies listed this way!
And when sellers list G3 or G4 as "G2" or list G3 as "vintage"
There are so many ID sites, seriously!
I have to admit I've bought a couple "G2's" because they were extremely cheap mint condition G3's I was looking for. Bugged me as I did it though because it was supporting people who will never ID anything before selling. >.> (I seriously hate on the FB groups the floods and floods of posts asking to ID a crapload of ponies, I've even gotten private messages asking the same thing- I only have agreed once, a friend referred them to me in a G1 group for my "G3 knowledge" and I was flattered, and the person asked politely so I agreed to help her out, ID'd about 20+ ponies for someone and never even got a thank you, they said "U looking 2 buy?" and when I said 'thank you, but that I had those ponies' [it was mostly baity main 6, other generic G4s, a couple relatively bad shape very common G1s] but I wished them luck, and nothing- no thanks or reply. Why did I bother! >.< There are several extremely simple, easy to use ID sites out there for ponies, it's just laziness when people are begging others to ID them all for them in mass amounts. I used to love helping people ID but I've found a lot of them are just lazy and/or rude and it has burnt me out on it. :( But anyway, that is a bit of a tangent there!)

Fortunately all my sellers have been very lovely. I did have one person on FB that sold me a Baby Seashimmer and Moonstone who I have been dying for, they disclosed Seashimmer had marks on her but between the lighting and her angles I did not realize just how many marks she had! She looks very dusty but is actually just very stained, not to mention blue/brown stains all over- those I knew about, though. But I did not say a word and thanked her dearly because Moonstone was in great shape (ALL her glitter!!! ) and I got them at a very discounted price for buying both and desperately wanted both, and she DID disclose that she had marks so there was nothing to truly complain about. She also stuck a lovely little note in the package! I keep all my "Pony People" notes. I am keeping her, I do love being a safe haven for "baity" or marked up ponies! As long as it is not truly, irredeemably awful, I love all ponies.

I was slightly concerned when my My Pretty Pony came wrapped in newspaper but it didn't affect her or her box or accessories at all, and they were Hawaiian newspapers from the 80's with some juicy stories so honestly I had fun reading them. XD Just glad she is hard plastic like you guys were saying, so she didn't get the ink on her!

I am so sorry for those of you who have gotten terrible sellers or had poor experiences buying ponies!! D: Ponies and toy collecting should be a fun hobby we can all enjoy and it really disappoints me when people gatekeep or scam or are rude/belittling to others. These are TOYS, this should be fun!! D:

Who else has bought ponies that don't mention a smell, and you get them and they wreak of smoke?
my Munchy!  that was a a hilarious tale to try and get clean XD  she no longer stinks XD

OH THAT'S RIGHT!

You inadvertently bought Rastafarian Munchy, I remember!!!

OH MY GOD I remember this so vividly!!! I have told all my friends this story and they're all dudes and not a single one is a pony collector but they all bust up laughing at this story. Munchy, of all ponies! XD

Still reading through this thread but just recently someone threw a link in the shoutbox of an outrageously priced Pinkie Pie G4 diary on Ebay? It had to have been a McDonald's prize or something, it was so cheap. I think it was like $10,000 it was listed at, eh? I can't remember exactly. All I remember is laughing.

@Duenia - Any mislabelling of generation annoys me, but more it annoys me when the words cutie mark or brony appear in a G1 auction title/description. The historian in me demands terms are correctly used and not anachronistically applied...
A local Letgo listing has 2 g1s and a g2. It says it's 3 ponies from 84-87 (one is 97, Skyskimmer) and the description leads with "any bronies out there?"
I politely messaged them to tell them one is a g2 from a decade later.

This is a first and hopefully last! I agreed on buying a pony lot (primarily for my daughter but it also had some nice g1 accessories in it) for a reasonable price. Really was glad with it! Paid the seller and he/she went to the postal office (or that's what was messaged to me). Instead of tracking info I received a message that he/she re-thought the sale and wanted more money. Unwilling I finally agreed to pay almost double for it because I really wanted them and the seller threatened to sell to someone else.

I received the lot in great condition but received a message afterwards because the seller wanted a part of it back. I refused and received nasty messages saying how bad I am etc....... ?!?

I have one from just a few days ago too, its not so much bad, but hilarious at the same time.

I bought 3 ponies from the same seller, and they came all together in a box, wrapped in newspaper (luckily there was no ink transfer). As soon as I opened the box there was an overwhelming smell of something illegal, I don't even need to say what it was, its obvious

Me and my brother had a good laugh over how obvious and strong the smell was and the fact that they hadn't even tired to mask it, and the ponies are currently sitting in a tub of cat litter to try and get rid of the smell!

I had someone agree to hold a lot of hair for me until payday, then sell it to someone else without so much as letting me now! Sure, that agreement was not binding but still!  :(

I find this particularly amusing because that "something illegal" is legal where I am. :P

I had this happen with a custom pony swap. It was super tacky, gross and made me never want to swap with that person again. Legal or not.

I'd feel the same if it was cigarette smoke or the reek of beer or cat pee, baby puke... anything. It's all just as gross to come with something like a swap pony

I have a couple of stories as well.

I bought 2 MOCs from a seller on the Swedish forum druvdalen. Seller was a mod and highly respectable. Package arrived and the ponies were in a bubblemailer. She had had the sense to use more bubblewrap but still. Luckily the cards and bubble was whole, I have no idea how that was but I was so glad for it! I never dared mention it because of the sellers status on the board. Eventually she dissapeared when it came out she was not as trustworthy as people thought.

Another respectable seller on the same board became a member on another forum I had been lurking on for a while. There I saw her brag about how she bought ponies cheap on ebay and sold them for a lot more on our forum with lots of sarkasm and  mock smileys attatched to the post. It was not a scam but knowing how friendly and kind she was on our forum and realising she was so two faced made me cringe. I never said anything about that either but also never bought anything from her again.

A (former) friend, also collector, sold me one of her childhood ponies which was in gorgeous condition. Since I know how I feel about my childhoodherd I asked her several times if she was going to regret it and she said she was not. A year later she asked for the pony back. Knowing our conversations prior to the affair I said no. She offered to get me another one but I knew that finding a new one in that condition would be almost impossible so I refused. Sorry but sold is sold especially after such a long time. I got a lot of backlash for it from other people as well but didn't care.

I had made a deal to buy one of the dance 'n prance ponies in great condition from a local seller. We had already set a date and time of when I could meet the seller. Mind you, due to a friend living near I was willing to take the over one hour car trip to where the seller lived.
...the evening before I get an email that she won't sell it. That was it. No further info before I asked myself, seemingly the reason was her kids didn't want to give it up! Ugh. It was so frustrating.
And then there's this lovely thing a nearby recycle center, basicaly our countrys equilevant of goodwill, does whenever they havd ponies on sale. The price tags ARE TAPED ON THE PONIES. Every time there's a pony there, it has the sticker price tag that is held down by a tape that goes around it's body!

And if we are bringing thrift store pricing to this thread, I need to tell my favorite. It's so hilarious that I need to make it's own reply of it:
I was at a thrift shop. Probably the same seller considering how uncommon G1s are here had rented both a table place and a glass cabinet place.
In the glass cabinet, we have Lemon Drop and Bubbles both about 12 euros each. And on the regular thrift shop table? We have REGENTROPFEN FOR LIKE 4 EUROS and Tex.
The more I think about it, the more hilarious it gets. The overly common Lemon drop for 12€ on a glass cabinet, meanwhile the collector favorite Regentropfen at a regular table for 4€!!! The seller clearly knew nothing about ponies.

I have had this kind of experience too! A seller with common ponies on the table at more expensive prices, and then a box of not so mint ponies under the table in which was Spanish Strawberry Fair/Sugarberry...for 30p...

Oh gosh! :D that's insane. It's funny when the sellers fail so bad that they ask crazier amounts for common ponies thinking they're rare when they'd have actual wanted rarities too...

Also, this sort of thing makes me rage internally. Whether or not their community bothers you they only care about the current generation's cartoon, and if they do like older ones, it's the ones that inspired the mane 6. Moreover it makes me feel like they're lumping myself in with them (most likely unintentional but still...I'm a collector! End of discussion!)

Of course I did! I was a bit less knowledged then so I would have left her there if I had not bothered to ID her just in case. Thank gosh I did.
German ponies were not sold here either but Finland is still a lot closer to Germany. I've noticed that I see now and then toys not sold here - probably brought as souvenirs in the 80s and 90s, she was probably one of them.

I saw a listing of a large box of ponies on the Facebook Marketplace, only about 25 minutes away. The box contained some G1s, uncommon and sought after G4s, a ton of others for only $30. Of course I contacted the seller immediately and when they said it was still available, I was over the moon. So then I asked if I could pick it up at 2:30. They then said someone else was coming in less than 30 minutes to get them.  That would've been nice to know from the start. So in the end no ponies. A trip to the flea market this weekend may be in order.

I bought something off of ebay and had it delivered to my parents house.  It said it had been delivered so I was just waiting till I visited my parents.  They came over and said it hadn't come.  I looked at the tracking number and it say's it's been shipped to another state, with a completely different address...

Not to mention I bought a Saw for my Husband.  While it was new it was missing $150 worth of parts.  So I got to ship it back and I had to use almost an entire roll of tape.. lots of good ebay luck lately

Well, now I'm frustrated with a seller! I won a pony on eBay a week ago Tuesday and paid up immediately, but it's still not marked as shipped?? I tried messaging the seller on Monday but haven't heard back yet and now I'm scared that the sale's going to fall through. :yikes:

Sometimes the seller forgets to mark the item as shipped. I have a lot of ponies at home, that went from the seller, to the reshipper, from America to South Africa, through customs and to my house. And they are still marked as 'not shipped'. So I hope that it works out the same for you.

I hope so! I don't know why they wouldn't have replied to me if that was the case, though. :/

UGH!!
Okay I need to vent and this is the place to do it. I was browsing Marketplace and found a Carebear I really wanted, its one of the environmental friends care bears and I don believe they were ever sold in the UK so I was happy to see her :) I message the seller if she was available and if he would consider posting as it was just far away enough for me to not be able to collect. He said She was available and he could post but he was coming up to my town that week to see some friends so he could drop her off, Great right?

The day arrives and I hear nothing from him so I send a message asking whether he was in Liverpool. He replied 4 hours later to say he didn't make it up but he would be happy to post, I replied saying 'Okay cool :)' and he didn't reply to this.

He clearly isn't interested enough to sell or he would have asked for my address and things, I don't even want to try message again for the care bear because I don't trust that if I sent the money it would be posted. I guess ill never get her

This has absolutely nothing to do with Ponies, but it just irks me to no end. (okay I guess if you're looking for pony DVDs/PC Games :P)

When people selling disc based media have pictures with the disc taken out of the case and placed data side down on the floor/table/carpet, etc. Why can't you just take a picture of the disc inside the opened case? If you don't still have the case, at least hold onto the disc or put it on something soft like a blanket or a pillow... You just know that when they attempted to pick it back up they put scratches on it. That doesn't exactly make it "Like New" anymore.

If it's an original 1980s carebear then yes, they were sold in the UK. My sister collects carebears and she has (I think) all of them in at least one size version from carbooting round where we lived. For that reason I got trained in what to look for.  I found one that I gave her in the last few years at a market stall. I believe I'm right in saying that they weren't sold in all places, but the UK was one place they did appear. (If we are talking ones like Sea Friend, Forest Friend etc). The one I found at the market stall was Sea Friend in the larger size.

So you probably will have another chance in the future :) There must be others out there.

In 1991 care bears were re released under the name of care bear environmental friends, they look different to the original lot and have a nature theme, ebay only shows those ones being sold from the USA so i havealways assumed they were a US only release as they were not too popular. You are right though we did get the original gang plus some exclusives that are now worth a pretty penny :) I wont give up hope  :hope:

I wanted UK's Proud Heart Cat when it was like $50-100 and now it's  $500. I don't need it that badly but img bummed it got so expensive.

Good luck! That would be amazing. I could talk about Care Bears for days but I'll save that for the Care Bears thread. But if I found an ok condition one for $100 or less, it'd go straight on my bed in my pile of big green plushies and smaller vintage ones.
