Title: Equestria Girls Spring Breakdown
Post by: tailrustedtealeaf on March 30, 2019, 08:27:34 AM
There's a new Equestria Girls special airing in five minutes, just figured may as well make a little discussion thread.
I'm excited to see
Spoiler
Sci Twi in Equestria! I'd love to see if she meets up with pony Twilight. Also the Storm King is supposed to be involved somehow? I wonder how that'll work in.

Where is it airing?
Discofam, I'm watching a stream right now.
I don't believe there was a netflix release planned like Everfree was.

I think the movie tie in was cool. I enjoyed seeing Sunset as a pony again, even if it was only for a short time. I still want her to return to Equestria permanently, sometime, but am not sure that'll ever happen.
Can't say the storyline itself riveted me too much but still a fun watch.

Sunset always makes these things worth watching. I can only deal with the M6 when Sunset is in there mediating (although I also prefer SciTwi).

I don't really want her to go back to Equestria because then she'd be swallowed up in FIM and not in EqG episodes, where she has a chance to shine because of her experiences and character development. Back in Equestria she'd just be swallowed up by the moral of the week.

I do wish they'd make more Sunset toys, though. Pony ones, not dolls. I have plenty of Sunset dolls.

Spoiler
So erm, that accent.

I think if it wasn't for the fact that at the end it seemed to be a fake accent put on to impress Rarity, I would be raging about the accent.

But otherwise...it's not the best episode ever but I did really like them going to Equestria. Even if it was just a brief thing.

Incidentally, the last painting Spike is hanging is seriously creepy. Can't help but wonder if that's how Twilight disciplines her students.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sunset wasn't even released in pony form in the G4.5/reboot toys? Starlight gets two releases, Trixie gets a release, but not Sunset. Hmm...
I'll throw some of my two cents down in the spoiler.
Spoiler
-I wish AJ wasn't seasick? It feels like they kind of tossed her aside this special. I feel like she doesn't get enough attention as is and making her sick like this doesn't help, she didn't do a lot...
-Did they have to put a petting zoo on the boat? They couldn't put something else? Does Fluttershy literally only care about animals?
-I like that Rainbow Dash had her wings not folded up in Equestria...cute detail.
-Because spike does not have wings and the school isn't present, some people are saying this happened after the movie but before season 8. Just a note.

So... Rarity has a crush on an orange, yellow haired, green eyed person with exactly six white freckles and a thick, fake accent named after a food.

And even the others reacted to them standing next to each other looking like twins. But then it was never addressed again. Ok?

Just make RariJack canon, Hasbro. We know you want to.

Hmm... Just a stupid though I had while reading your post, Zapper :

Rari-Jack doo doo doo doo doo doo ...♫

If you have the reference.

Lets go ship, doo doo doo doo doo doo, lets go ship, doo doo doo doo doo doo...
I thought that bit was rather amusing but I do wish they would stop making one-off crushes for the girls. TimberTwi especially leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I guess that's what happens when you have to cater to the tween girl audience. Getting some of that boy craziness in without having to introduce an actual bf.

But this time it feels like a conspiracy because there is no way that guy was NOT supposed to look like AJ. So weird.

So I genuinely don't care about pairings either, but I think pushing Rarity and AJ together would be less of an issue than cloning her into a guy form who fakes his accent and who also can't tell the difference between English and Irish culture, apparently...because that was Irish dancing and his accent was the usual poor attempt at something resembling (but not) cockney, which even most people in London don't use, and certainly not people in Ireland...

Not that Irish Dancing can't happen anywhere other than Ireland, but you know, if you're faking stuff, at least fake it more convincingly.

And yeah. The cloning thing...I dun get it. It's almost like acknowledging and rejecting a pairing at the same time. "Yes they're close but no, here's a guy so we can keep the conservative parents from freaking out"...?

I dunno. I'd also rather not have the pairing thing because I object to shows for girls being tied around "finding guys" or "dating" when girls do other things and don't need male interest or approval generally - but this was super weird.

The only "pairing" that I can deal with in EqG without going 'wince' is the lack of pairing with Sunset and Flash - they were together, then he liked Twi, she went back, he isn't quite getting that, she doesn't need him in that capacity any more. It seems more real human dynamic than "Hi, I'm a cute guy. You're in the main cast, so I'm gonna stalk you for this episode then never be heard of again..."

What about Twilight and Sunset being with Flash Sentry or whatever (I only watched the first two EQG movies oops)? Twilight and Sunset are adults in Equestria/as ponies, and they paired up with a teenager? I like TwilightxSunset, but I don't like SciTwixSunset for that reason, because Sunset is still an adult but SciTwi is a teen, yeah? The writers didn't really think it through. :P Or I'm overthinking it...

The ponies' ages are ambiguous I suppose so maybe they ARE teenagers, but it's hard not to interpret them as adults when they run schools and own franchises... and sanctuaries...

Ragamuffin, I was thinking of you when that guy appeared.
"Ye ole Ragamuffin, t'is me name, oy! Pip pip!"

I guess his accent was supposed to be fake in-universe. And the dancing was kind of Titanic-y.

It was all obviously spoofing Titanic. I just have a personal twitch with the fake cockney, its so offensive. But I'm weirded out by why he was faking the accent in the first place. It's all a bit weird to me...

I also thought of Ragamuffin here when he said that was his name ;)

I see the FIM ponies as not quite adults...maybe kind of in that limbo of young adults but not really much into the adult sense. I mean, eighteen year olds in human years can do a lot of stuff, start businesses, etc.

I don't think pony ages and humanoid ages are comparable either. I think that is just hurting the brain.

But what I am ok with with the Flash, Sunset, Twi thing is that it isn't and doesn't become a pairing in the end. And Sunset and Flash appear to be friends after being a rather forced item. Which is character development, rather than a convenient love interest moment.

Hmm it's really weird. So here's my galaxy brain Equestria Girls theory:
The ponies are between 11-20 years old in Equestria, so although they are adults in Equestria (say 13 or 15 is the supposed "go out on your own" age), they are teens in EQG. We do see Flash's horse counterpart in the first movie as well as an episode or two in the FiM show, and we see he is portrayed as an adult in the royal guard. The fact that his horse counterpart is roughly Twilight's age is what prevents that bit from being creepy to me.
The only thing is we know that Sunset Shimmer is older than Twilight, so maybe it gets a bit fuzzy when they come over...
They probably just didn't think it over very well. They could have done a college setting but that's not hip and relatable to the tweens!
My big issue with TimberTwi was that Twilight is clearly in this universe a teenager, and Timber comes off as 20-something? Yikers.

Does anyone know if this will be coming to Netflix or airing soon on Discovery Family in the US I know it was on this morning but my on screen guide is terrible at distinguishing the Equestria Girls movies and shorts from Esther other.
