Title: Who is your grail pony?
Post by: emily_katie on May 07, 2018, 03:48:10 AM
At the minute we are having what could be considered to be a little heatwave in the UK. :relaxed:
Last night I was having a BBQ with my family and it made me realise how much I need TAF Munchy in my life!
I need a pony which represents my love for Gerkhins!
I feel like the odds are against my favour however as not only does she seem to command a high price in sales on eBay for example, shipping from the US to the UK can be horrendous, and as we all know Munchy was sold exclusively in the USA  :wail: She deffinately isnt as rare as some of the ponies you guys desire however  :P

Do you have a pony that is seemingly unnatainable? If so how come? I'm interested to know so i dont feel so alone in my quest for a burger loving pony  ;)

Munchy was also sold in the Netherlands I believe.

If it cheers you up any, I found Night Glider here in the UK, and she's from the same set. She wasn't sold here either. Sometimes ponies do travel. You never know.

I don't have Munchy myself, but my sister does, she's a favourite of hers because of the theme xD.

My grails are probably now - loose, Baby Sugarcake, who is constantly on sale lately but always out of my price bracket. I have been looking for her for about 18 years. I have her sister, but not her. But I have been fortunate enough to see her and even hold her at ponycon :) They wouldn't let me take her home though :( ;)

My MOC grails are all ponies from my childhood collection. Windy (Rainbow Pony) on the UK vertical card is #1 because she was my first pony. I have missed out on her twice on ebay now, once ages back because I had no money, and once recently because I didn't know she was there till after the auction had already ended. But it gives me hope there are still Windys out there. One day I will have her.

The other two that are really high on my grail MOC list are Pearly baby sea pony Ripple (UK card) and Rainbow Curl Pony Rainbow Magic (UK card). I do know both of these also exist as I have seen them for sale but just missed out on them.

So those are my grails.

P.S The weather here is lovely at the moment ;D and the flowers are so pretty :D I went out to the bank holiday carboot sale and it was just nice to get out of London and into somewhere green in the sunshine :D

My main grails are the Alternate Birthflower Ponies.  I am SO CLOSE to finishing the set, but October (Cosmos) keeps eluding me  :(  I'd like to get March (Daffodil) and April (Daisy) loose too eventually, I have them MOC, but I wand to display the whole set on a shelf together.

Isn't it funny how you can go literally months without seeing a pony you really want up for sale, and then all at once or in the space of a few weeks three or more will suddenly crop up.  I got three of the Alternate Birthflowers in a month earlier this year, and found none since.  It's either a flood or a drought!

One day I would love to get the MO Mummy and Baby but they're way out of my price range right now.  One day...

Sternanglanz. So pretty, and the pose is beautiful :) But I doubt I'll ever get her with her price and me being located in the US where I can't find her locally.

My ultimate grail would be to get any Takara pony, but I can't imagine ever having the patience necessary to save up for one!

A more realistic grail of mine is Windwalker.

Sterenglanz is amazing!

I think if you know where to look, she's definitely attainable even if you live in the US. I don't think she's as expensive as some of the others in that set but there are some variations on her symbol I think so some may be more expensive than others. So I suggest if you aren't worried about variations, find out if one is cheaper and go hunting in lots for her :) She was sold in Germany and Austria at the very least, and I see her come up for sale quite a lot...

@Starstrider - you have an enviable geographical advantage for alt birthflowers! I have only one of that set - mine, Violet (who I call Stedmoder because she's from Denmark and apparently according to the card that's the Danish xD) but I would love to get more of them. I just can't afford to go trying to collect them seriously. They're so expensive :( but so much nicer than the white ones (which the UK didn't officially get either, but did get some on clearance at the end of MLP for some reason).

I have deliberately avoided going out to look for these other than Violet because the financial pain is just too much to bear ;)

I got outbid by less than a dollar on a green-haired Peruvian Lickety Split (she sold for less than $50! [sob]) years back, and the few that have come up since then go for waaaaay more than I can afford. I suppose all 6 Takara adults (especially the blue and green ones) are pretty impossible grails as well.

However, by far my most wanted ponies are - and I know this is weird - the last few Hasbro Pop/Design a Ponies made before the line got cancelled. Specifically, Starry Eyes, Meadow Flower and Cloud Chaser, as well as small Celestia. I waited too long to buy them on Taobao and they sold out, and as far as I know they were only ever sold in stores in Scandinavian countries. If you know where I can find these, PLEASE PM ME! I'm starting to give up on ever owning them.

Chief.

I've wanted him for awhile, and my mom is determined to find me the perfect one on ebay. She didn't find an affordable one last year so hopefully I'll get one for my birthday in August. In the meantime, I can't look for one myself, so he's unattainable until he's finally gifted to me, eventually.

Mimic. I could probably save for her, but I often have things to pay for. I may start putting a little aside each week to save for her.

Other than that, probably the Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe. It's hard to find!

Ohh okay! if she was sold in the EU i suppose she could have more likely travelled :) Its annoying sometimes i see collectors talk about EU exclusive ponies and how lucky i am to live in the UK in that respect but all the ponies i like are mail order in the US or just never saw international release  :| Lets hope i can find a mountain boy in the wild lol. And you have quite the list! MOC ponies are appealing to me but if i cant afford used ponies i will have no chance getting MOC  :silly:

all I really want is non so soft wind whistler, pina colada and fizzy.
That isn't too muh to hope for right? ;)
That seems obtainable! :)

Rapunzel and she will surely take me about 20 years to save up for...
I'm so glad I have no interest in Rapunzel! Good luck in saving/ finding in the wild!

One day I want my very own Takara pony, but Ebay's base price is over a thousand dollars for one.
I didn't know what the Takara ponies were until recently, I would kill for one of the plushes!

Grail pony for me right now is Rapunzel , I would not mind if I found a bald one at this point.
But she isn't Rapunzel if she doesn't have beautiful long golden hair ;)

Mimic. I could probably save for her, but I often have things to pay for. I may start putting a little aside each week to save for her.

Other than that, probably the Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe. It's hard to find!

I wasn't aware of the Slipper playset until like this week (I'm a total noob). A youtuber I like found one recently in a goodwill along with 4 other G1 playsets and she payed next to nothing for them, I have faith you will find one!

*whispers* I got Rapunzel for 50p. Technically. But if I hadn't, I wouldn't have her. She's nice, but not that nice.

@Emily_katie - I have that annoyance too with people saying we're lucky. No, we weren;t lucky ;) All the ponies I wanted growing up were ones like medley etc which we never had. But for US people, they're super common. I would have given up a lot of UK exclusives we had later on to have had those over here when I was a kid. Seriously.

I DO love the early ponies we had and I do love that we had Mountain Boys, regular eyed ponies and regular versions instead of SS ponies. But it's genuinely a case of always wanting what's out of reach...

Oakly the Moose.... I have a serious love of moose being from the north and collect plushies and things featuring them. Discovering Oakly was just- m heart could have exploded for love of him but then I saw his going price...even back then it was too much for a thrifty person like me to hope for.

Someday.

Weirdly, I have his brush and ribbon. A fellow collector sold me a bulk lot of g1 accessories from a craigslist lot she won because she didn't collect them. I told her I couldn't pay hr what the lot was worth and she'd be better off selling elsewhere but she was so super sweet and insisted on selling to me.

Comparing the ponies she got in the lot to the accessories and looking up mint in package references I found I have a lot of comb and ribbon matches for some rarer ponies. So when he comes home, he's got his things waiting for him <3

Well my grail for a long time was MOC Mimic.  Then last month my amazing husband bought her for me so that itch was scratched!  After having her as my grail for so long there is not another that I want as badly but the top of my list now is Nightlight.  I love her colors and the time has come to make her mine!

Another one of mine is Pillow Talk. So pretty... She isn't that expensive either, but I really only hunt locally. So it's possible.

Sigh.... Princess Taffeta.... I've lost count of the years she's eluded me... I've come close a couple of times, only to be outbid  :wail:  I can't afford her singularly, so I'll have to source her in a lot sometime.

And I'd love to get Lavender Lace back. I had a beautiful one that I sold in a dispirited pony moment. Learnt my lesson there. Haven't been able to get one back since.

Both those ponies will happen... good things to those who wait!

Any SA pony really, but specifically Windy who I used to have as a child. But who went missing. At least I do live in SA and so 'have a chance' of finding them in the wild as such. But I have been looking for ponies in every possible place for 3 years now and in that time I have found... two. So it isn't as easy as one might imagine.

Oh, I have so many grails I dont even really know where to start :P  I cant decide which I want most ^^

A lot of different Lemon Drops still in package, mostly MOC German baby Lemon Drop. I have seen one, but I doubt she will sell her anytime soon :P

Otherwise I have MO Mommy and baby Or MO Sweet Scoops.  I just love their colour combinations! :)
And some rare nirvanas I most certinately would have to sell some organs to get hold of :P

I just hope I'll win the lottery some day, so I can afford everything I want :P

Well my grail for a long time was MOC Mimic.  Then last month my amazing husband bought her for me so that itch was scratched!  After having her as my grail for so long there is not another that I want as badly but the top of my list now is Nightlight.  I love her colors and the time has come to make her mine!

Wow! I was eying her on ebay. She is truly a gem! Congrats on getting her! :)  At least I have her loose, so I think I will settle with that ^^

I'm not hoping for any super expensive ponies, I can barely afford the common ones as it is, lol!

@ Taffeta  -  Violet is definitely one of my favourites in the set, she's a lovely one to own.  And I SO understand about being hesistant about collecting them due to the expense - I have deliberately NOT kept track of how much they have cost me over the years   Too painful!

But to be entirely honest with you Taffeta, being in Australia really isn't any advantage at all when it comes to collecting this set.  Of the 12 Alt Birthflowers I have (excluding the elusive Cosmos but including the Alt ALT reverse Holly), NOT A SINGLE ONE of my collection came from Australia.  :( My regular Alt Holly came from New Zealand, which was exciting for its' proximity and slightly more affordable postage, however it was just as pricey as if it had come from an Euro dealer.  But every other pony in the set came from the US, the UK, or from Scandinavia.  The only reason I have so many of them is that I have hunted them for years and paid a lot of money to secure them from foreign sellers  >_<

I have never seen Alt Birthflowers available on Australian eBay (I mean, it's possible I missed one at some point, but we do NOT tend to get grails or Nirvanas here often).  They're really not any more common here than they are in the US.  In fact, they're significantly more common in the US, simply because of being a larger population equalling a larger market made more collectors who have ended up hunting them down and shipping them into the US over the years.

Their scarcity of the Alt Birthflowers in Australasia actually makes me doubt the whole "Australian Birthflower" origin, frankly.   I have no memory at all of them ever being sold in Australian toy stores as a child (not that my memory is by any means exhaustive of the range available in the 80s and 90s, but I never once came across them as a child, and between me and friends we had A LOT of ponies).  They are just not found around here.  The back cards come in both Danish and English, but I think the English was actually more for UK market than for for Australia.  Originally I made them my grails because I was excited to collect a set which was super pretty, rare, and (supposedly) local to my home country. However after years of trying to complete the set I am no longer convinced they were ever even sold here as they are just so scarce.  I think that really explains their distribution patterns better if we consider them Scandinavian in origin after all.

I have several... :lookround: Grails that I actually have a shot at include Mainsail, Sugar Apple, Princess Pristina, TAF Yum-Yum (though she and Pristina are probably way above my budget, which is usually non-existent anyway), Flower Bouquet and many others.

However, if "grail" means a pony I really want but I will probably never own, I'll go with Truly and Paradise. They have to be non-So Soft, but I am a.) very picky about any flocking/glue residue and yellowing, and b.) Scandinavian NSS Truly is WAY above my budget. :(

I don't have a specific grail pony, but I always get excited to get a pony from a set I don't have yet (Dance and Prance, Brush"n"grows, Merry-go-round etc...)
Those I'm looking the most for are seaponies (I want them so bad since my childhood ;-; ) and if I have to give myself an objective, I'd say I want every single pony with Neon Yellow (Electric banana on DH) in their mane.
I would also be very interested to get every FF ponies. They kinda fascinate me. I only have Minty at the moment. :satisfied:

In a general way, I just want new ponies to my collection, they make me so happy and discovering them at the bottom of a box in a flea market makes my day, I feel so proud and happy to have found them and picturing how I will restore them back to their glorious selves.

@starstrider - backcards are a tricky thing, and sometimes what they say can't be trusted. I know there are 2 really different design ones - more often I see the Danish card though.

I know they weren't sold here. But it's never black and white what the intended market is. It's possible that they actually were only in NZ and then maybe select stores in Australia. But you're also right. People buy and trade a lot from other countries to the US. I think the same is true with some UK ponies now as well.

It's hard for UK people to get hold of Mountain Boys for cheap because of the general market, MOC is impossible and half of them aren't known to survive MOC anyway. MB prices lately seem to be on the rise, which is a bit mysterious. I'm slightly concerned about that...

I would love one on that card too. I only know of one surviving example in English of a 2nd set Rainbow on that card though and it's Flutterbye. Though there are some Nirvana versions (Italy,Spain etc) on those cards in German/Spanish/French. The girl I know who has the Flutterbye says she thinks she bought it from Australia originally.

My grail isn't exactly that - the only thing holding me back is a quick hunt and price point (a real grail to me, as many of you have listed, is one that is SUPER hard to find, not something that is separated by a price point), would be two of the UK exclusive dragon companions: Flash and Pickles. I had collected the others probably 20 years ago and was never able to finish the set. Maybe I'll start working on those again

I'll try to keep an eye on this thread in case I have any that anyone wants.

Thanks for the info.! I've been very curious about where it was from. I saw a pic of Confetti online on that card in English, but I have never seen one for sale. Have you seen that pic? She looks so pretty on that card and is one of my favorite ponies.

I didnt, but it's nice to know that there's another one out there :) I would love to own one of them too one day.

*sigh* cards are lovely, aren't they? :)

@Beckysaurus - dragons used to be really common on the second hand scene, we used to find them at carboot sales a lot but not so much now. One thing that I found when we used to carboot is that sometimes the seller knew they were pony dragons, but often they didn't. They most often got tossed in with pencil toppers and things like that. So maybe if you're feeling like a detailed ebay lot hunt, it might be worth going and checking other things like that that are non-mlp, where the seller is in the UK, in Italy or wherever else dragons were sold. It's always worth a try :)

Daddy Sunbright is my current grail...really all 3 daddies, but Sunbright is my most wanted....

Daddies Sunbright and Berrytown are in my opinion the two hardest to find European/UK release ponies from the last 2 years of release. I am certain they were shortpacked. I remember seeing them in stores, so I know they were sold in my area, but I never found either of them at carboot sales and had to trade for both of them. Aside getting Daddy Sunbright MOC a few years back, I've never had a double of either. I've been doing this online for 20 years and was carbooting before even that, so there are very few UK ponies for which I have never had a duplicate.

What I'm saying is, you may need to be prepared to spend money to get them, so I would definitely wait until one comes up in great condition. It's not worth buying a poor one to upgrade later, you'll just end up spending way more than you need. Definitely save your dollars and wait for a really nice example that fits into your price bracket.

Meadowsweet is not so bad as the others. I am not sure why :/

My current grail is Red Roses! For MIB/MOC it is MIB Sugar Apple and MOC Fizzy on german card.

That's basically how I found my bushwoolies and wands: in a box of princess toys at a yard sale. The seller didn't know they were mlp.

MOC Chief, I know I'd better win the lotto for that one. As a kid I had cousins and an aunt who danced at powows. My mom helped me make tiny regalia items for him, ones to match what I'd have worn. I was so, so happy to find there was a Native pony. Granted he is horribly stereotypical but it was something.

I see Pony brides around  quite a lot, so I have faith you will find her! As for the hair I think its quite hard to find any pony with mint condition hair, especially ponies with long hair! I'm sure if you find one with bad hair you could get help from some of us in the Arena :) Have you ever tried soaking hair in fabric conditioner and then flat ironing on a low heat? That helps me a lot when I get a pony with unruly hair that a basic wash and comb doesn't fix

I think if you keep looking this is definitely a grail that's doable. There are always people who kept their childhood ponies really nice.

german Starshine and mexican pegasus Baby Blossom have been my grails for over ten years, finally got them.  now I'm just looking for nbbe brazilian Baby Lofty.  dutch Baby Dolphin I want almost as much.

as far as grails for non-nirvanas, I mean, there's a TON that I want very much but haven't gotten around to dropping the money on.  Babies Splish, Splash and Splosh are very up there.

for me a grail is a pony that is HARD to obtain because of rarity and/or cost.  so while I won't be dropping the cash on Munchy any time soon, it wouldn't be hard at all to grab one of her if I had the money to throw.

Right now, my gotta-have-it grail isn't even a pony.  It's the baby pony wear elephant suit.  I have been looking for it for years but I do not think I have never even seen it for sale.  I have seen missed eBay auctions, but not active ones.  Unless you count the green and yellow Argentina(?) version.  I never thought it would be this hard to find.  My cousin has it from her sister's childhood collection, but she won't give up her MLP, darn it.  They just sit in storage!

Unobtainable type grail would be Takara Milky I suppose.

I have some that are obtainable and some that aren't quite as obtainable for me...

I've been on the lookout for a pristine Confetti and pristine Toppy. There actually was a beautiful Confetti that popped up on eBay a while back, but I got outbid with 2 seconds to spare. I was gutted. But oh well, I'll just be patient.
Not so obtainble would include SSN Hushabye and a piggy pony. Hushabye isn't crazy expensive, but I've got a real problem with saving up money lol. And as cute as piggy ponies are, I'd never go out of my way to pay that much for one. I would be thrilled if I randomly ended up with one, but I just can't justify spending that much cash on apony that wouldn't even be a part of my "main" collection. (My collection consists of US releases only)

Right now, my most wanted are Night Glider, Night Light (big symbol ver.) and Sternanglanz (metallic painted symbol ver.), I love me some celestial themed ponies! They're all quite expensive and relatively uncommon/rare though, so they've been on the wishlist for a good long while.

My last grails, from what I felt towards them, were Argie Buttons and italian peach colored, Macau style Cotton Candy. I was super lucky to get a decarded Argie Buttons w/o accessories but still/again in her card for much less than I had hoped for, and got a beautiful Cotton Candy with still pink hair just around a month ago. Else, I have been hoping to retrieve a UK Princess Pristina variant with aqua tail quite some time already, one could probably call her a grail as well. I saw her just once and got outbid, that must have been around tree years ago.

Apart from that, I am wondering why I just read "Sternanglanz" (misspelled) already two times? It is "Sternenglanz" actually. :)
Upon a quick websearch for the misspelled version, it took me to Strawberry Reef and also the wiki where I just made the correction. I even checked back on the German card for Sternenglanz  shown on the wiki but it was not misspelled there either.

I definitely planned to save up for all 3, I know I'm probably looking at $150 each minimum, though you never know, I could get lucky (I recently got Ice Crystal for a steal!). Most of teh Euro/UK ponies I have left are in the high end category, there's only 10 of them I have left, so the list is short and I know I'm in the minefield of uber expensive ponies...I do appreciate the heads up though, and I definitely don't plan to buy any that need upgrades, if I go for it it will be ones that are in very good shape...so I am preparing myself for a wait... :/  :cold:

Meanwhile to save money, I am having customs made of the 7 tales ones to save a little money in my collection overall...that may sound like an odd choice, but teh 7 tales to me are sorta an offshoot anyway, I have never seen teh show but I hear its dreadful...still now that its supposedly available at Dollar Tree here in teh US I'm interested in picking  up a copy...

I always love My Little Pony Tales :) I don't think it's dreadful. But I also grew up with Bright Eyes as a childhood pony and they were in the comics too, so I guess I have a nostalgia for them as well.

And no problem on the heads up xD. The Daddies are well worth the waiting for, they're all very nice ponies, so I wish you lots of luck in finding them. The rarer European and UK releases sometimes do go for a lot of money unfortunately :( (also congrats on your Ice Crystal steal!)

@Tiara - I feel exactly the same way every time someone types "Baby Licorice." It's Liquorice. It's meant to be the British spelling. That's her actual name :P
I shall refrain on commenting again on Strawberry Reef as a G1 ID source ;)

My pony luck is close to nill, so these may not seem like crazy grails, but they are for me. Crumpet, Daddy Apple Delight, and Baby Apple Delight!

I consider nirvanas to be a whole other grail hunt. Maybe at least one of the yellow/white/red/blue argie nirvanas, or Jenny, if I ever come across either.

^Well, hopefully the dry spell on her won't last. She's a nice, pretty pony. There's actually one on eBay for $55 US if you're willing and able to drop that much on her. She's in nice condition, even has her wings.

My big grail pony, I already have: Hollywood. Definitely a proud part of my collection. I actually got her relatively cheap because she's chewed and has had a severe haircut.

After her, I would guess Mimic. Any condition, but ideally with both of her eyes present. Here's hoping Hasbro includes her in the reissues because her secondary market rarity and corresponding high price have been driving us nuts for years.

G4 Protype Minty will always be my grail. She looks to be worth upwards of a hundred dollars now, and I never see her anywhere. I still love the official one dearly, but I wish I had something closer to her G3 self too.

Hmm.... For US releases, I'd say blue-heart version of Dazzleglow, M/O Sprinkles, and the Flower Fantasy ponies.

For Nirvana... Night Light, Rain Drop, German Starshine, all the Flutterbye variants (I've four right now, if I'm not mistaken), the unicorn version of Blossom (Peru? Mexico? Can't recall right now), and... French Reverse Bowtie (so pretty!). I don't even want ton know how much she's cost. :yikes:

Mine was G2 Queen Sunsparkle, but I got an amazing deal for her on ebay like last year. :)  I suppose now mine are the Apple Delight Family, the flower fantasy ponies, and the Halloween G3s (Pumpkin Tart and Abra-ca-dabra).
Pretty sure I have at least one of those two G3s MIB; can't recall which one though. I can take a look in my sales box, if you'd like?
