Title: Baby Leaper Question
Post by: Raindrop on January 01, 2019, 04:28:31 PM
I have a Baby Leaper in need of restoration.  I successfully repaired one for myself, so I have experience removing and preserving the mechanism.  I am planning to sell him, though, and I am debating whether to hair him in his original color, or a deep green or purple.  If you were buying him, would you prefer original restored or alternate rehair?

As a personal preference, I don't like to buy alternate repairs and prefer that all of my ponies, rehaired or not, have their original hair colors.
Seeing as Baby Leaper is somewhat sought after, I can imagine you'd have better luck selling him with his original hair color instead of an alternate color scheme. But in the end, it's your pony and you have the freedom to do whatever you want with him!

For sales, I would go with original hair color. Even if it knocks his price down a bit, I know there's some collectors who wouldn't mind the rehair if it means getting a more expensive pony at a nicer price. If it were for you, I'd totally go with the alternate because you can always undo the hair.

I agree with the above suggestions. Since rehairing him involves a few more steps than rehairing a pony without the mechanism, I personally feel that you'd have a harder time selling him with an alternate hair scheme because it would be harder to swap the hair out if the buyer wanted a more authentic look.

How bad off is the hair? Does he have a trim? Or is he completely bald? If he has any hair left, you may want to leave him as-is. I myself do not have a problem with rehairs/restored ponies as long as the price reflects that the condition isn't original, but I know there's quite a few collectors that would much rather buy a Leaper with a mohawk rather than a Leaper with a full mane of brand new hair.
If he's fully bald and there's no way around the hair issue, I would rehair him in his original color. He's not exactly a common fellow and I personally wouldn't want him altered/customized in any way.

If/when you do rehair him and list him, go ahead and say what sort of rehair technique you used. I don't mind buying rehaired or restored ponies for my collection, but I stay far FAR away from those who slather glue all over the inside of the head instead of taking the time to just tie knots. I do not buy ones that have glue and I also play it safe and avoid rehaired ponies where the seller doesn't bother to say which technique they used.

Of course, these are all just my personal opinions and I'm sure there are others who feel differently

I would go with original hair colour. I think if the pony is of a lower value (normal $15 and under) alt rehairs fetch more money. For higher value ponies people perfer as close to original colour as possible.

If you where keeping him I would say an alt rehair :)

I agree that if you plan to sell you should rehair using the original colour and the knot method. Leaper is one of my grails and I would only buy him rehaired under those conditions.   :)

Leaper is my favourite pony after lollipop.... As i always look for more of him i would personally only buy rehaired in original colour, or possibly a blend that would suit him. Personally i think purple and green hair would not suit him at all.... I see so many different types of rehaired ponies for sale which don't sell over and over again because, they just look so wrong, colours don't go at all. Just be careful when you choose your colours, especially for leaper because there won't be many rehairs of him... Don't want to spoil him  :P

For leaper...
I'd prefer damaged or cut hair before a rehair.. and I wouldn't consider buying an alt rehair

I agree. I also second what Kotton Kandy says. It does depend on the level of restoration needed. There are people who don't buy rehairs and would not be interested in a restored pony where they might accept a damaged one with some original hair left.

Another that agrees with re-rooting in the original colors....

Original colour. I don’t mind rehairs but they have to be the original colour.

What if you put him up for sale and let the buyer decide?

Honestly, if you're just gonna sell him anyway, I'd let the buyer decide. Personally I'd only be interested in buying one with original hair.

If I were shopping for Baby Leaper, I'd prefer one that looked as close to original as possible. I don't collect alternate rehairs though, so this is just my personal preference...but the suggestion to let the buyer choose makes the most sense!
