Title: Show off your thrift store ponies & stories!
Post by: StarDragon on January 24, 2012, 12:40:47 PM
I'm leaving for my plane back to school tomorrow, and there are a lot of thrift stores where I am headed. I have been really looking forward to going pony hunting when I get back to school because of this, since I have never found any ponies or pony items at any of the thrift stores here at home (and I have been going to those stores since I was a little girl- nothing!).

Ironically, the first thrift store I went to with my friends before coming home for winter break, I found ponies!! My first ever thrift-find of ponies in all my life. :)

So, now that I am in the mood for pony-hunting, I would -love- to hear about your thrift store finds, and maybe how often you find ponies, too!

Just for show-and-tell, here are the three girls I found:

North Star, Twilight, and Bouncy. Twilight is in the best condition of all of them.
So, story time!! -sits and waits-  :relaxed:

Wow, nice! I'm not going to show pictures because nearly my entire collection is thrift store ponies. Most recently, I found G1 Tunefull and Princess Primrose, both in amazing condition, and some G3s and 4s.

I suppose the best story I have is from a few years ago. I hadn't found a thrift store pony in probably 8 years at the time, but had just moved to where I am now. A friend and I went to a large local thrift store and I took a quick look in the toy aisle just to see what was there. At the end was a My Pretty Pony, which I had wanted for years, ever since I first saw an overpriced, badly broken one in a store years ago and didn't buy it. Between that thrift store and two others in my area, in almost 3 years I've now doubled the size of my G1 collection, got my first 3 Dream Beauties, and added a decent number of G3s and G4s, as well as some non-pony stuff.

Good luck to you in finding more! I think searching for them like this is what makes pony collecting so fun to me!

I never seem to have any luck whatsoever, apart from when I formally decided to start collecting. I found a bag with Retro Cotton Candy and Butterscotch (in my sales thread and en route to Ireland for lilcutiepie, respectively) Bumbleberry and Sno-Glo. After that...nothing. I found a large baby, not quite sure who, but she closed her eyes when her head turned and seemed to be wearing pajamas and two playsets at a Value Village near me, but didn't buy them. However, a friend of mine visited that same Value Village once and brought me back a bag with G1 Flutterwings Lily (newly up in my sales thread), G1 Rattles and Tattles and G3 Garden Glade! I was very pleasantly surprised, and quite often wish I could have similar luck!

Good luck looking- thrift stores are so touch and go.

Wow, Ellisto, that is pretty amazing. You must have some amazing pony-luck! (Maybe I shall kidnap you and take you with me to thrift shops... hehehe)

That's sweet of your friend, kmlv23! I'm like you, though. I never have that much luck either, except for the three that I found a couple months ago. :P Hopefully that will change for both of us sometime soon, though!

There is one thrift store near me that gets ponies in sometimes, mostly G3s and McDonalds (I could have pretty good size G3 collection from there if I collected them. It has been tempting sometimes.) One time they had some G1s. I got Sundance and a Baby Rainfeather. They had another baby G1 too but I couldn't read any markings on her hoof so I left her because I wasn't quite sure what she was (come to find out she was a Fancy Pants baby.) Turns out I can't really get back into G1s so I'm hoping to find the ones I did get another home. I still think it was cool to have found some G1s there though.

My one prize though is this G3 Sparkleworks plush

As I said, I don't collect G3 but I totally fell in love with her and she's in perfect condition. She was only 99cents.  ^.^

Aside from 3 ponies, my whole collection is from thrift stores. I find ponies about every other time I go.

I haven't found ponies in awhile,  but I'd say more than half of my G3s came from thrift  stores, and a good chunk of my G1s . Sadly finding a G1 is a rare find nowadays...

Heh, yeah, I've been really lucky! But I know I'm not the only pony collector who gets her ponies there. Here's another story. This summer, I saw someone about my age holding one of the "eyelash" princesses...I went over to her and asked if she was going to buy that, and she essentially ran away from me. Maybe I'm wrong, but I got the impression she wasn't buying it for a kid but for herself since there were plenty of other ponies there and she had the only G1 I saw that day.

G1 Twilight! You're so lucky!

I find ponies maybe once a month, but I am sure there is someone else who buys charity shop ponies apart from me in my area as I often find accessories but no ponies. I did find a couple of bags of G1s about two years ago, just commons (Cotton Candy, Butterscotch, Forget-me-Not etc) and they were all covered in pindot but the bags were only £1.99 each and there were a couple of ponies I didn't have at the time. I found a G3 Royal Rose last week, and a plush patchwork Cheerilee the week before that though :)

Can I steal the luck of some of you? I haven't found ONE pony in a thrift store... (Caveat: In the last six months since I started seriously collecting) Not even a fakie!

I only seem to find G3's. :( I went hunting at a few thrift stores and came home with one which I plan on customizing since her symbol is half-rubbed.  I also found a pinkie pie and a 3.5 Sweetie Belle. But I hate that I have to buy a bag full of junk toys in order to get one pony. ;_;

Yea, I always just pay for the bag and then tell them I only wanted one thing out of it and open the bag right there and give the rest back to the shop. It's just a mater of deciding if I want to pay that price for the one item.

Hear are a few of my favorite thrifting finds.

Found her at one of my favorite flea markets- I've never left without at least one pony! I didn't get all her stuff in the picture but she was complete- the person who sold her to me found her in someones old barn that was about to get torn down!

Dark body Bowtie! I looked for a long time before finding this variation- its so hard to spot her in any auction pictures. she has a few flaws but for .50 I'm not complaining.

Skippity Doo- found her at the same place as the Pretty Pony but form a different seller. I have loads of other thrifted ponys but those are some of the highlights. lol, I love my job- who else gets payed to go to every flea market within 100miles and look for ponys *cough* I mean pass out fliers...

I basically never find ponies at thrift stores.. and if i do, they are G3s... maybe every once in a while a manky G1. i usually dont even try those places anymore.
the best finds at thrift stores were an Anchors Away one time and a Steamer another time.

on the otherhand i have found LOADS of ponies at the swap meet, craigslist/garage sales!!

All of my G3s except maybe 20 or so came from the thrift store. I have over 100 G3's.  I have found G2's at the thrift and G3.5 and very rarely I find G1 which is my favorite of all finds.  I have found Cotton Candy, Bow T., Lullabye Nursery items, and a Little Whiskers I think it is.  She was my favorite find even though her symbol is really rubbed on one side.  I have seen the cases but they are always in terrible condition with torn clasps, missing handles and the inside is all cracked.

I've found so much from thrift stores and flea markets over the years that I am starting to forget all the stories. I've been LUCKY.

Let's see....

Several years ago I found Tux N' Tails at a flea market for only 50 cents. He was a bit squished but is still lovely.

I got MO Mommy Pony from a toy dealer for only $30. She isn't perfect by any means but has great curl to her hair. I thought she was a steal.

I also found from the very same flea market as the two ponies above a whole basket of G1s a few years ago. I think each pony was $2.   I cannot remember all the ones I got (I bought most of what they had) but one of them was SS Angel.

From a different flea market I found a whole ziploc baggie full of the original G1 McDonalds toys/booksmarks. That was pretty awesome too.

From a thrift store I acquire tons of near mint SS ponies...Magic Star, Posey, Lickety Split, etc along with some others. The lady brought them there specifically for me. They were part of her daughters collection. I got a great deal on them and they are some of the most gorgeous SS ponies in my collection.

I wish I could remember more but I can't.

I don't have pics at the moment, but my best finds were G1 Seashell, mint for 7 cents, and my most recent find, Hollywood for 23 cents. She needs rehairing though, so she's currently disassembled on my bathtub.

Otherwise I mainly find doubles of G3s I already have so I buy them up for custom baits.

I don't know a lot about G1s, so when I got her in a bag along with eight other G3s for $10, I wrote her off as a fakie. When I asked who the fakie was, the Arenas reaction was as follows;

Oh, I love this thread!  :lovey:

Most of my g3s are from the thrift store and probably about 75% of my g1s are from there, as well.  I've actually been very lucky.  Two of my best trips was one time, a few months when I started collecting, and I found 36 g1 ponies, many of them mint, including these girls:

And then, a few years ago, I hit the g1 jackpot - 106 g1 ponies, including Nightglider, Lemon Treats and Baby Crumpet (my mom and I actually split the lot of them.)

On other trips, I've found a dream beauty, Cha Cha with her skirt and Princess Taffeta.  Unfortunately, I haven't found much lately but I keep hoping; I found my most recent g1 about 6 weeks ago.  :)

I hope you have great pony luck!  :)

It's pretty strange...Back home, I can always find G3s all over the one second hand store we have in town, Goodwill. But here, in one of the largest cities in the country, I have gone to numerous thrift stores, but not a single pony :') I've only ever found one G1 at Goodwill though, and that was my first time going there for ponies...Which got me thinking that finding G1s wasn't that big a deal, if I could find one easily the first time I tried :P Oh, how wrong I was!

This is her, Rainbow Curl Ringlet...I thought she had marker marks and such all over her body, but when I left her home for the semester they seemed to have disappeared? I'm not quite sure, maybe my mom somehow magic-ed them away while I was gone. Her hair was also pretty matted and funky, so I cleaned and recurled it. It was my first pony restoration, so it was pretty fun :)

And I'd just like to make a slighly related "congratulations", to that person that went in to the consignment shop in Philly and bought the store's entire collection of ponies (an entire binful!) less than a week before I got there. I feel so lucky to know that all those ponies were sitting there, for all these years, just to be completely swept away a few days before I come :'D

Good luck looking- thrift stores are so touch and go.

It's probably because I'm getting there first! :P I check both Value Villages (Fenton and Shrewsbury) fairly religiously. That poor ugly walking pinkie has been there forever. So far I've found 6 G1's and lots of other generations between the two stores.

Almost all of my 200+ ponies are from thrift stores/flea markets, so I will spare posting them haha.

I tend to do this too if I find a bag with just a couple ponies or other items. That way I don't have to tote a bunch of stuff home that I will just end up bringing back later to redonate!

I think I probably find more ponies at yard sales but I must have missed these! I found them each bagged separately with the accessories divided up between them. There was an obvious yard sale sticker under each Goodwill price tag!

Most other pictures I could share are from garage sales as I tend to have better luck at those :)

I really haven't looked many times in thrift stores for ponies, but the few times I have looked I usually find something..... so many many fakies, too many to bother bringing home now...... I have found a few G3s & G3.5s & Breezies & a few plush, & Barbie horses & Bratz ponies, and recently the twist & twirl hair salon thing, it didnt have Daffidazy with it, but was only $2 and my kids love it.   I have only ever found 1 G1, it was a Bowtie, but since I already had a Bowtie in my herd I sent her to a pony friend who had recently sent some other ponies to me.
The worst thrift store around here is the one called Goodwill, they had McDonalds ponies marked as $1 each OMG! and an empty (yes I said empty) bottle of MLP bubble bath marked as $2, so i don't even bother going there anymore, if they ever had G1s in there they would probably be marked $50 each LOL!

Fun thread!  My best find was Mimic for less than $2 at a thrift store and most recently I found a G1 lunchbox (the one w/Gusty and Baby Gusty on it) and thermos for $2 at an antique store!!  I love a good deal!!
Good luck everyone!

I have quite a few thrift store ponies, but the very first time I went thrift store shopping I found a Baby Dancing Butterflies in the free bin!  I only paid a quarter for her... she was a mess too... just nasty.  I ended up trading her with a member here... I haven't had much luck since then... just a few G3's here and there and an occasional G1.  Here's the poor dear after I cleaned her up.

At a second hand store I go to frequently, but never find ponies at, I found one of the G1's on my most-wanted list :D Last weekend after digging through tons of old toys I found... Starswirl! Her hair needs some major TLC and she's got a few marks to touch up, but I'm still thrilled with her :) I smiled the whole day through after getting her for less than a buck

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I usually keep the one's I find, unless I decide against them for one reason or another. And the three white G1's you found, with the flowers as their cutie marks, you said you spent $20 on. I was just expressing my desire to be able to do the same, but when I'm buying, I try not to jump the single digit dollar mark.
EDIT: Just expressing my jealousy over your wonderful ponies. :( Sorry if I offended you...I seem to be doing that a lot lately...

OMG are you serious, I am very sad to say that I work at Goodwill after reading that. What Goodwill was selling that??? Either way it's in Adelaide so it mean that it came from our factory warehouse. The guys do all the hard ware which mean the toys. Clearly they aren't very good. :/ Because everyone knows that I collect My Little Pony if anyone finds anything to do with it they give them to me. I did get two of my Childhood ponies back though. Problem is, I take the G3's becuase I've been told unless they're mint they'll get thrown out.

I have alot of ponies that I have found from the markets and at work. I'll have to wait until I get home to post a photo of them.

SO IT WAS YOU!!!!! lol jk. Wanna be friends? I'll prolly be there tomorrow.
Muahah   We really need to organize a meetup or just get coffee or something, I know of at least 4 other people in this area and a few more in the surrounding counties. Put it on our new years resolution list!

I avoided value village yesterday, since it was the last Wed of the month which means half off and everything gets wiped out in an hour x.x

I had some great finds yesterday, will post pics when later when I get around to taking them!

Yes, it is true, the Goodwill at Christies Beach is the one I am referring to.  I bet that empty bottle is still there, surely no-one would have bought it.  It was about mid December, I remember coz I was only out at Christies to have my pic taken at ServiceSA for my contractors license, and Goodwill is in the same building so I just popped in for a look.  They seemed to have a lot of clothes in there that are not actually secondhand, they have tags on them from other stores, I suppose they are some kind of old stock or factory seconds, but they are not exactly cheap like you would expect from this kind of store.  I should have looked at the prices on other toys in there for comparison, I will if I'm out that way again.  But for MLP comparison I went across the street (and down a bit) to the Salvos there & got a bag full of 8 MLP (G3 & Breezies) for $4.

I just thought of another one. This isn't a thrift store but it was still awesome. I was at a country fair that had some flea market type booths. I find six beautiful Wing ponies (including Cool Breeze) in stunning condition, along with two dream beauties. i think I only paid $8 for all of them.

I got pretty lucky last Saturday! I snagged a couple G3 McD's I didn't already have, a cute fakie, yet another Pinkie Pie (at least it was one I didn't have), art pony pose Toola Roola, December Delight, a 3.5 Pinkie Pie and... Sundance! In decent condition, too.

But I think my best thrift store find is a working Chatterbox pony. I didn't even have to change her batteries!

When I was in the UK I found some UK exclusive McD's... that made me super happy.

Aw, I have a Rainbow Dash and Tink-a-Tink-a-Too just like that! I suppose my biggest thrift store find was when my mom went when I was at school and brought home bags full of G1s and G3s. Or when I found G2 McD Sundance at a thrift store.

It was in a town called Pittsfield in Illinois. My parents used to own property in Pike County and we often to went to town for shopping and such. My parents and brothers and I all went to the country fair every year. We all looked forward to it too. What made it have even more of a country feel to is was that it was located in a super 'country', rural area. Lots of Amish people even attended. I was a fun atmosphere. I sure miss going there. :)

That's so awesome! They look pretty! Look at Wind whister's pink hair!!

Almost all of my collection are thrift store ponies.
One of my best finds was at Goodwill about 10 years ago.  I think there were about a dozen ponies all in awesome condition.  Among them were Tux n' Tails with his bowtie, and both Sugarberry & Baby Sugarberry (with a yellow ribbon!).  It was such a great find that I went back later that day to see if any more items had been set out.  One of the clerks recognized me and went into the backroom.  She brought out a nearly complete Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe w/Scoops!  :lovey:

The first time I was out shopping specifically for ponies I picked up Scoops and Peppermint Crunch at Value Village, then found a Princess Pony (Cant' remeber the name) at Goodwill.

Since then, on various outings, I've found... Skydancer, SS Northstar, Banana Surprise, baby Noddins, baby Cuddles, a really creepy, demented looking Sweet Stuff that I'm scared to be around, some random unicorn that I don't remember (In Glory's pose, I dislike that pose and I dislike rainbow ponies, so I forget.) Aaand today I just found Edgar the elephant. :)
Although I doubt I'll be keeping him, he's just not my thing.

Apart from that, I find g3's all the time, so I've built up a huuuge bait box. Anchors Away was probably my best G3 find, though.

My only find was at a charity shop so it kinda fits here. A Lady Baby fakie. She's a cream colour with light green hair. The only fault on her is the fact her tail is a little frizzy and knotty. Great for less than a pound!

I found this at a garage sale without any ponies for about 8 bucks.. I got up at 6am to go to this particular sale and my earliness was rewarded!

One of my favorite thrift shops I found this gal for 7.50 0.o my only MOC pony I own I wouldn't trade her for anything!

I tend to find quite a few G1's at thrift stores and garage sales... I guess I'm lucky :D

Most of my childhood ponies are from yard/garage sales, so it's hard to recall.  Ummm....  I usually find ponies nearly everytime I go - Friday night right before closing is a great time; they are stocking for the AM rush on Saturday.
