Title: How do I take apart/fix/clean out a seapony?
Post by: MidnightFireflies on March 29, 2012, 11:27:23 AM: Hi y'all! I have obtained a very sad seawinkle... :cry: I would like to help her by taking her apart and cleaning her out. She is full of nasty growing unidentifiable stuff, and the weight in her has become loose. Can anyone offer their expertise in taking her apart, best way to clean her out, how to fix the rattly weight thing in her? Or would someone be so kind as to point me in the direction of a tutorial? Thanks ahead of time!!

Post by: Elisto on March 29, 2012, 12:20:41 PM: I don't know if there's anything special about sea ponies since I've only had to clean out regular ponies, but I'd imagine you can take her head off and scrub the inside with a small brush and toothpaste to remove any rust. I'd get rid of the weight if it's rusty too (and replace it with something else?)

Okay, sorry, that was dramatic. Um. Do whatever you have to, to get the head off. Use some long needle-nosed pliers and pull the weight out. Scrub and clean and scrub and clean and scrub. Sea Ponies = EWWWW.

You can replace the weight with something stainless steel like a bolt nut or a nice hefty stone to help the pony rebalance should you want to use her in water. But you don't have to replace the weight...

Post by: PandaBerryInSpace on March 29, 2012, 02:51:43 PM: I once had a bait that was full of nasty brown mold, and I gave it a nice 16 hour bath in scalding hot Oxyclean. (Well, it wasn't hot by the end of it, but still. :P) She's good as new now!

Post by: FantasticFirefly on March 29, 2012, 03:36:37 PM: Rust you need to scrub out. if it's mixed with black mold, remove the head, weight, glue blob (nasty orange thing rattling inside). Scrub. Head still off, allow conditioner to dry in hair. Put body, head and soak in a mild bleach solution and the mold should be pretty much gone. Finish with an internal scrub to get the last little bits. If you'd like to replace the weights, you can sand off (outside, with gloves, it's nasty) the yuck on the weight and replace it when the pony is fully dry.

toothbrush
soap
conditioner
bleach
container (to soak pony)
gloves
sandpaper (if replacing weight)

Just a liiiittle warning though - cleaning that girl out will be pretty nasty! :silly: (although it will be worth the effort )

If the weight is loose already it should be easier than usual. If the head is stuck fast then heat the head with a hair dryer to soften the glue and then try again :awake:

I use the heating the tail (using my hairdryer) and then pushing method, and also the pliers, and havent had much problem using either. It does depend on how bad the weight has rusted as to how easy it is to remove though visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I cleaned up the rust using toothpaste.The weight was very bad so i got my FIL to use one of his machines to file the rust off and it was still good underneath - I dont have a pic though - it went back into the pony

Post by: Rachel-Eyes on March 30, 2012, 08:56:23 PM: I've also heard that a small marble would work well in place of the weight if you do want to replace it... and yes, I've also heard that replacing the weight is a good idea because not having it causes the pony to lean at an awkward angle in her shell. :(

Good luck on the restore! I know she'll be gorgeous once you have her cleaned!

I let her sit for about 5-10 minutes until she was SUUUUPER SOFT. Getting her head off was relatively easy after that, and for the hard parts I used an X-acto knife. =) She was DIIIIIIIIISSSSGUUUUSTING... As bad as those pics posted from ringlets. I used an old toothbrush and hot soapy water and SCRUBSCRUBSCRUBSCRUBSCRUBSCRUBSCRUB...changed the water...SCRUBSCRUBSCRUBSCRUB...you get the idea. I FINALLY found my oxy cleaner and will be boiling her hopefully tomorrow =)
