Title: Any put their collections on floating shelves?
Post by: banditpony on June 09, 2018, 06:47:19 PM
I'm losing my built in shelves that I keep 80% of ALL of my collections on... so I'm looking for a new solution.

I know most people with collections do wall-to-wall shelves (like billy cabinets), or big cabinets...

but does anyone use floating shelves for their collections? If so, can you share pictures?  ^.^ And it's not limited to just ponies. Dolls, plants, books, etc...

I'm thinking about mix and matching my collections together.

AND -- are there any suggestions for where to get them? The first thing that comes to mind is Ikea lack... but I like the look of natural wood ones too.

Me! I've been rearranging things on my wall and I've been putting some hanging shelves from Lowe's up to give myself more space for my collections. Just using what I had before wasn't cutting it anymore.

Images are in the spoiler tag!

Spoiler
Here's the floating shelf my mom thrifted for me, that I use for some G4.5 stuff:

I mostly collect books and they go on Wall shelves. I used to use floating ones for my model horse collection till we had an earth quake and they all came crashing down. I would just make sure whatever you pick to have really good support systems.

When I was in college, we had shelves similar to what stores use where there were 2 brackets screwed into the wall. we could put the shelves into whatever brackets we wanted. I have looked for them here but I have only ever seen them for sale in Alaska. I would love to get rid of the dark, fake wood bookshelves and replace it with these shelves but I can't find them.

Alaska gets earthquakes all the time and since they were bolted to the wall, the shelves didn't budge but my some of the stuff did fall down.

I don't have any up currently, but in my old office room I had floating wall shelves and loved them! They give a ton of space for collectibles without taking up the "floor space".

If you mean using shelving brackets rather than giant wooden cabinet things, yeah.... I guess I've done that...

:) Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

Not quite.

Floating shelves don't have external brackets. o.o that's a LOT of ponies you have on there, lol.  ^.^

Yep. All my ponies but customs are on floating shelves.

...which I have no photos uploaded of atm  ^^;

Here's my Raincurl shelf though. I'll take a pic of the rest in a bit.

As you can see, I had to add some stuff to fit everything. I got the wooden ones unfinished from Michaels forever ago. The little house shelves too (perfect for petites and blind bags!). The white ones I think I got at Target.

I have some of my favourite ponies on a floating shelf next to my bed. :D To be honest I'd like to have shelves everywhere in the house, because I have so many little collections and pretty things I'd like to be able to see all the time, but I can't because of the walls. :( We have very strange walls, some places are so hard that I can't even get the drill though, and other places just crumble. >_<

Thank you BlackCurtains and Broken Irishwoman ^_^

I think I like the idea of floating shelves since it can kind of highlights what's up there.

Oh oh oh!  The square shelves!  I have some of those.  The only thing that's kept me from using them is that I have misplaced my power drill  LOL
