Well, some of you may have noticed that I love boy ponies. ;) I also love projects. A member here recently offered me a sad Daddy Apple Delight. I of course happily purchased him.
So, what do you think? Any idea what these stains might be?

I did some cleaning and used some acetone on him, where I could:

Update 08/15/13
I ended up removing his mane, it was pretty broken and chopped up.
I decided to try a hydrogen peroxide soak for a couple hours while we had some sun. He has definitely improved! (Though my kitchen is not the best for taking photos...)

Yikes!!
could it be rust perhaps? Maybe he was stored with something rusty and it got all over him? I would give it a try and clean him with some rust remover.
-
Yes, rust was my first thought. His insides are nice and clean (really white too), only a couple of spots on his washer. He actually has impressions on his body where the dark lines are. It's quite odd.
I may have to try some of that, since I have about reached the limit of using acetone. Thank you! :)
-
Rust was my first thought too... Looks like a good bit came off from the acetone so maybe it's not embedded in the skin? :|
-
Rust is my thought too...wonder if CLR would work? Don't know how much it would effect him though but their are Green products out there that remove rust and would be more gently. Or have you tried a magic eraser?
-
I did try magic eraser first but the staining was a bit...sticky. I will definitely have to think about some rust remover. I did try toothpaste too, no luck.
-
Doesn't RIT make a rust remover too? I know it's mostly for fabrics but it might help?

The stain does not go on the symbols?
It looks like he has been soaked in something or something has been pored over him and it has only "stuck" to the porous part of the plastic and slid off the paint of the symbols.
Have you tried a bicarb paste?
-
looks kinda like hot chocolate to me stain wise....
-
How curious. Makes me want to clean my Daddy Apple Delight.

Nope, there was not any staining on the trees and such. The dots on his back were faded/discolored though. It is certainly odd. It also seems as though where the staining is, there is actually pitting to his body. Especially where the few dark lines were.
I had not even thought of baking soda, not sure how that slipped my mind. Thank you for the reminder! The poor guy has had a lot of different things on him in the last day.
I ended up putting him in Hydrogen Peroxide today and setting him outside for about 2 hours. It made a huge difference. I am going to post some updated photos. :)
-
Looks like Pepsi to me! Glad that the H202 soak made some headway!
-
It may be best to never know what it actually was. I am glad that he is improving though. :)
-
HOO! That was something else! Goodness... Pitting?? Like corrosion? Hmm, the pepsi or coke suggestion might be onto something. The chemicals in some sodas can do that.
-
I think in the post-acetone photo you can see the "texture" to him. It definitely did some actual damage to the plastic. Though, it looks a bit better after his soak.
-
Yeah...I am actually going to agree with the cola/pepsi as a real possibility - it explains the stickiness, it explains the pitting on his plastic and it explains why there is nothing on the smooth non porous symbol paint.
-
Glad to see he's cleaning up so well! I don't know what that stain is either, it does sound kinda like soda. If it can clean coins I wouldn't be surprised if it chewed on ponies too.

Uh, yeah. I once did an experiment in school as a kid with Diet Coke. We hammered a nail into a full, opened can and let it sit a few days.... we knew the experiment was over when the ends of the nail fell off! Diet Coke can eat through metal, soda can totally destroy old plastic.

My brother used to be an HGV/lorry/heavy goods mechanic...they used cola to clean parts for haulage lorries :P

They use it to clean up after road accidents in America apparently, I can't drink the stuff after reading that :X
-
I think cola is a definite possibility. I am glad that I do not drink it.
I posted some new photos of him just now. I will probably consider his cleaning process done, then onto re-hairing him. I do not want to risk any fading to his symbols at this point. He is overall much whiter and only has a few small brown areas left.
-
I never would have thought he could be so white again. He looks great!

It's still less acidic than the stuff your stomach produces naturally. Unless you're drinking a massive amount and bathing your teeth in it for significant periods of time it's not going to do you any harm.

WHOA! he turned out amazingly! bright white again! :D
-
my god hes to pretty ;~;
-
Wow, must say congratulations! He certainly has improved. Too bad about the corrosion on the plastic, can't wait to see him rehaired! Are you going to try some alternate rehairing or stick to his yellow mane and tail? I always pictured him to look great with some green streaks
-
He's looking really good!!!
-
holy cow! He looks whiter than the days I did the Hydrogen treatment on my poor baby Moondancer!
-
Oh wow, you did a great job of cleaning him up! Even if the plastic did get a bit damaged, he still looks much better now.
-
He looks great, what a huge improvement!
Would love to see him once he's been rehaired :)
-
He is done. Updated the first post with some photos. :)
