Title: Why Do Some Adults Collect Toys?
Post by: pawpatrolbab on August 17, 2018, 07:41:25 PM
Came across this video from one of my favorite Youtubers the other day; Heather Sparkle!
I know I personally have my fair share of shame for collecting and liking toys at my age so I figured this video might help someone else too <3

I am approaching my 40s and I am more drawn to ponies now than what I was when I was younger. A lot of it is being able to use more styling tools; if I take the head off of a pony no one will get angry; and if I fill a sink with ponies no one can yell at me. I didn't know how much I wanted to just have them and style their hair again until just about a year and a half ago.

My family was too poor to buy us(my siblings & i) any toys growing up.  I remember most of my childhood spent using our imagination, like pretending to be Olympic skaters & gymnasts, playing pageant & being on Star Search (lol).  Im  loving the g1 repro line

The way I see it is that it is no different than any other hobby or collection. Some people collect stamps, coins, spoons, china, baseball/trading cards, ceramics or glass. I collect certain kinds of toys. Always have, always probably will. Now I will admit, the fact that my husband has his own toy collections does make it a little easier in regards to shopping/buying new items since it is a shared hobby. In regards to vintage G1 MLP though, I'm starting to think about them as also a toy restoration project. After all, they have to be cleaned up and styled so that is more than just buying it and putting it on a shelf.

I think the simple answer to this question is the best.

Because they can :)

Couldn't agree with this more! Some collect shoes, or handbags, cars, etc. A collection is a collection. As long as it brings you joy and you aren't hurting yourself or others in the process then there is nothing wrong with collecting what you like to collect!

Because they can :)

Also a good reason!

Because it brings me joy, keeps me from letting my cynical/snarky side from being unchecked, and makes up for a really bad childhood.

Also because I can.

I collect toys, to either make hybrid dolls (swapping heads of Fashionista dolls to either 90s Barbie bodies or the Made to Move bodies, or if it the Ken Fashionista dolls I use the articulated Captain Kirk dolls).

Or in pony cases collect them so I can re hair them if the hair us a mess or turn them into different ponies.

It's our intrinsic desire as humans to gather stuff.

I collect in order to surround myself with things that generate happiness, despite all the stress in life!  As Sanrio's company tagline goes, "Small Gift, Big Smile!"

Ponies were so expensive when I was little.  Although I played with mine over a number of years I never had many and I always used to look at the colourful brochures that came with them and dream of owning them all. I guess you could say I am now living that dream, lol :D

Because it's fun!
Life's too short not to do the fun things while you can.

I like the comparison to art. I like to display them, like many collectors, and I only 'play' with them to take photos, aside from my electronic ones and virtual pets.

Don't be shy Khoufu, you know you use them to reenact the adventure/drama soap opera: My Heart( throb) Beats For You.

I have not enacted romance with my ponies since middle school! Long story short, each village only had one boy.

Oh  boy, I can only imagine the drama and broken friendships that resulted in that.
