Title: Another Reason I Love Cats
Post by: StarSwirl05 on May 19, 2017, 11:24:11 AM
So there was a hornet in my house recently and having been stung by one, I know they're not something to mess around with (though given their size, they're kinda scary as it is). Fast forward to today, apparently the hornet had gotten weak enough that my cats were able to finish it off.  Who would've thought cats could turn one of the more aggressive insects into a mere play thing? So I guess just having a little patience and a cat can take out a hornet without using anything special :D

Haha. This only applies if you have a "real" cat.
My kitty has like, zero prey drive. XD

Glad the kitties saved you!

Mine are pretty much like "If it moves and is small, I'm going after it". Wouldn't recommend them going after a healthy hornet though.

That's great your cats dispatched it with no injury-

We actually have a semi-feral cat who is a great hunter usually and loved trapping (and eating) bugs.  He used to do this thing with moths (or little flies) that had gotten into the house where he'd press them to the window with his nose and then SNARF them up *yum yum!*

Well, he did that once with a hornet.  He got a horrible sting on his sensitive little kitty nose- it hurt him so bad he peed his pants and his nose swelled up terribly-  I felt so bad for the guy.

Ever since then bugs that "buzz" (even large flies) make him a little nervous and he has never trapped another bug with his nose... I think he has PTSD!

I guess all that to say-  hornets can definitely hurt your kitty so watch out!

Yeah, I was worried it would attack them or my dog given they aren't going to be aware of the danger they're in.

How nice of the kitties, mine dont eat wasps, I lure wasps with melon bits, and take them outside. though some would rather stay and sleep on me.

Had a small hole in the roof of the screened in porch.  Casey would catch bubble bees when they got in that way.  Then bring them in the house to play with them.  Still alive.  She Hates that I would take them away from her.

My cat would probably run away scared of a hornet. He's scared of birds, for sure, and probably mice as well though I'm not sure he's ever encountered one.

Good thing they weren't allergic. My dog's dad died of an allergic reaction to a bee sting.

I had a kitty who hunted grasshoppers...

Dogs will do that too--and same if they get stung.  They will stare at the thing and shy away.

Careful with hornets though...Allergies are no fun

I think there is a wasp nest in-between the wall of my living room. I keep hearing a buzzing, but I can't locate it.  They are psychic and know I hear them so they shut up immediately.  So, basically, I hear them once. I stand up to start looking for what wall and I never hear them again.  My husband has been trying to locate them also.  I am telling you they are sly little buggers.
