Title: Thoroughly baity Majesty - what to do? - >> updated: MIMIC custom
Post by: glitterball on February 23, 2019, 04:01:29 AM
I recently bought a bundle of G1s and found this very poorly Majesty.
I never throw out poorly ponies and see Majesty's condition as a super challenge!  :yikes:

So far I have given her an oxy bath, magic-eraser once-over and gently removed the last of her glitter symbols with acetate, then bathed her again.

She is covered in LOTS of age spots on her face and legs - and there is a significant "bloom" around her neck. It's interesting to see the age-spots have taken a rusty impression of where her symbols once were!

What to do?

Perhaps I could re-paint her body? I have never done this so am unsure what paints to use, an acrylic spray would look neat-and-tidy I suppose.
If I repaint, I could fashion an alt pose Moondancer (in pastel hair) or why not try Mimic? Hmm.

please tell me your suggestions on what to do and HOW to go about it!
Thanks!

I had a really bad Bouquet similar to your majesty.  I cleaned her up and repainted her symbols, then I pearlized her.  She turned out amazing and the spots are not noticeable.  You can get the pearlizing paint at most craft stores, you just want to seal it very well afterwards.

Oooh pearlizing is a lovely idea! Thanks!

I'm gonna have to file pearlizing away next time I get a baity CP pony.
I'd say maybe a hydrogen peroxide soak? I've heard some good things about it and spot diminishing.

Ah, good idea, I may just buy a bottle of it next time I'm passing Boots the chemist, worth a punt, eh?

You could try peroxide soak for nothing! Her symbols after that should be fairly straightforward to re-paint.

I have me a wee plan  :devious: :ninja:

Pearlizing sounds like a great idea!

I agree, peroxide soak and let her in the sun for awhile in it to see if things will lighten. If all else fails I'd say customize her into something completely new (like a reverse body color/symbols)!

The glitter rust stains were so intense I have decided a re-paint is in order.

As I have a few Majestys already, some in great condition, I am going to attempt something drastic -
to customise her into Mimic!

Yay - I already have the correct colour hair in my stash (from a previous Dollyhair shopping spree) also some acrylic paints that I can mix to what I can only assume is her correct body colour - I have never owned Mimic nor do I think I could ever to afford to buy her, so only have on-line photos to go by.

This should be a fun project!

~~ETA~~
mane re-root and body paint thus far:

Although I feel her colour is slightly too yellow, may do further coats with a bluer tinge to it. Sitting her next to Posey she does look more green, but maybe I need to cool it down futher. Watch this space!

That's very cool indeed. I think the colour is too yellow as you say and should be softer/paler too. She looks awesome. I'm keen to know whether the paint job stays on well over time given the plastic breakdown going on under the surface. I'm really exctied to see her when she's finished.

I'm not sure it's too yellow, Mimic is a very yellow shade of green, but I agree with Artie about softer...? I don't really know how to nuance the difference though in artistic terms, and from screen pixels it is hard to discern a colour like hers. I haven't got mine here with me, but looking between my site photo and yours, I think it's more a matter of softening the shade slightly rather than making her more green...?

I think it's a great way to 'save' Majesty, though, she was in such a poor state! I hope that the plastic issues don't cause her problems.

Thanks for the encouraging feedback!!!  :thumb:

Yes, I intend to make the next few coats of paint a more "pastel" (softer) shade, (adding more white and a tiny tint of blue to cool it down ever so slightly) as I said before, never seeing Mimic in real-life it's tricky when trying to match the right colour!

And I also wonder, will the plastic deterioration come through the paint-job in time? Who knows! But I thought it was worth a try, especially to save poor Majesty, she looked so poorly as-is

I don't usually customise, I try to restore poorly ponies, so this is a first for me!

Even though I have access to some beautiful Swarovski jewels, I am not sure yet if I should "crystallise" her eyes - as they are already an very good shape, plus it would freak me out cutting into her eyeballs *shudder*.

Such a lovely solution! And so funny you chose Mimic: I'm in the process of turning Sad Tootsie into Mimic too  ;) have just received the hair.

And I feel you about the colour: I have never seen Mimic myself, in fact I only know of one in SA, so matching her body colour is tricky. However as she is alt Mimic I feel that it is ok for her colour to be slightly off.

I can't wait to see how your girl turns out: she looks really lovely so far!

Me too, these decisions are never simple which is one of the things I find so interesting about it. s for the eyes - I'd totally forgotten until you mentioned it! Could she be pre-wizard Mimic? I can't remember how the story goes... http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook2/1985_twinkleeyeponies.htm (http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook2/1985_twinkleeyeponies.htm) Thanks Taffeta!

Just thinking you could do a poll and we could vote...

She's going to be a beautiful Mimic custom! Those rusty "symbols" in the first pic look really interesting! It looks like she's trying her best to be Majesty with the symbols and all, even though the original glitter symbols are gone and have been replaced by rusty age spots

Thanks for pointing me to issue 11 of the UK comic, Artemesia, that brings back memories! I may dig out a pair of crystals anyway, just to display next to her, it could be a reference to the back-story in the comic where the Twinkle Eyed Ponies get their eyesight restored after being imprisoned in the dark mine!

Thanks, Elva!

NGSA, I thought about one day doing this to a Tootsie too, the body colour is very close, eh? Good luck with that! Will you be sculpting a unicorn-horn for her?

So, I remixed and remixed and remixed again, I *think* I have a better paint shade for her body, much paler and a tad cooler. It was a bit of a shock painting it on her, it contrasted a bit with the existing yellowness and I thought: - oops - but I now think it looks much better than before, just a few more coats to go, painting the parrot symbols, then an acrylic matt varnish to protect it, pop in her tail, tidy her mane and then the reveal

~~ ETA: ~~

OK, here is the new paint-job, looking less yellow and much paler:

Still got a couple more coats to do plus tidy the eye area!

So exciting!

Keep at it, my mimic that I’m doing (when I finish my Attack on Titan dolls) is based on the tv episode.

But my Majesty is cream coloured and she’s going to be a non twinkle eyed version.

Thank you - this encouragement has pushed me on to do some symbol painting.

Eek - maybe the crimson was too dark and I should have made it more orange to match the original (according to my online picture source)? Ah well, I think she look nice as-is

A view of both left and right sides:

To do:
sand-down her neck join to smooth-out, repaint it
seal the body paint
pop in her tail
tidy her hair
pose her with her magic eye crystals,  hehe

woo hoo I (almost) have a new pony!  :newpony:

BUT - this will have to wait until later on in the week, I have a neglected house to look after too, haha!
Once fully complete, I will post photos  :P

She is looking absolutely lovely! Can't wait to see the finished pony; you work fast  :)

Yes, 'my' Mimic will be given a horn; not yet sure whether I am going to sculpt it or buy one of the sparkly ones you can get on the internet.
