Title: pro tinsel or no tinsel?
Post by: kingluke on April 30, 2018, 01:15:58 AM
hello,

I saw some princess ponies the other day and I was wondering...what are your thoughts on tinsel?
Do you like the shiny stuff in their hair, do you dislike it because if it's ruined, it's ruined forever?
Or maybe you don't have an opinion, which is fine too.

Also, are there ways to replace tinsel? like new tinsel or glitter hair, or do you just leave it? let me know, what you think.

Personally, I don't really like tinsel because I can't really style it and I'm too afraid to do anything with tinsel haired dolls/ponies.

I'm curious to see all your opinions, please let me know :)

Personally, not a fan of tinsel because I find it REALLY hard to brush straight when washing a dirty pony's hair.
I will admit it does look pretty, but to me, the brushing outweighs the cute factor.

Tinsel and I do not get on so I try to avoid it.

I have a near mint G2 Prince Firefly and two from-new HQG1C ponies with tinsel - I love all three but  it would have to be an exceptional pony for me to get one in a condition where it needs TLC.

I love the idea behind tinsel however I find it always gets bent and crimped and sticks up in all ways, giving my ponies lovely perpetual bed head.

I dont like how unruly it can get, however I do like the look of it in the right amounts.

I thought I posted this already, but I guess not XD

What do you guys think of the tinsel in pony hair?
Do you like it, and why?
Or do you dislike it and why?
are there any replacements for tinsel when rerooting, or do you just ignore the tinsel.
Do you not reroot when there's tinsel?

I'm asking for everbody's personal opinion, not tips per se :)

personally, I don't like tinsel of how easily it falls apart. ALso I'm scared to do things with toys/dolls with tinsel hair.

feel free to comment, I 'd love to hear what you guys think

Tinsel is great... in theory.  In reality, it tends to become wildly kinked and unruly.  It's all very well and good if it's in perfect condition and you don't plan on styling the hair, but the rest of the time it makes ponies look as though they've been dragged backwards through a hedge.  I'd rather avoid the tinsel and keep it simple.  Besides, that's what the Pretty Up accessories were for  :P

When tinsel is in good shape, it's lovely. Once it's been pulled on and damaged, it's nearly impossible to make it look nice again. I've found that the colored tinsel the G1 princesses have is easier to manage the the iridescent tinsel lots of G3s have.

i dont mind it when the older generations have tinsel, but i really dislike the way some g4s have tinsel replacing whole sections of their hair. i'm thinking of the princess parade and rainbow power singles; that thread-like tinsel is SO unruly, and you cant remove it without giving the pony a huge bald spot!

I find tinsel really pretty but it is a pain to keep it in place, it's a shame is doesn't follow the flow of the mane really well. =) Also, it depends on my mood, sometimes I get fed up with tinsel when I see my G3s because too many of them have it. Ponies without tinsel is okay too, after all. ^^ But I have a positive opinion overall.

I like it on a G1 pony--the quality was better back then and you can  touch it without fearing it will break off.

Ill go ahead and bump this into the right forum or you <3

*hoards all the tinsel*

I don't mind tame tinsel, it adds a nice touch, especially on glittery ponies.

I didn't know it would break, though! Were certain gens more prone to that than others?

Wait why are there two of these threads now? Shouldn't this double one get deleted? We already have this one:

I think it looks great on G1 ponies. I don't really like it on G3s that much. I think Hasbro over-did that with G3s. I don't mind it if it lays straight.

@OP - you did post it (I don't know where) and the mods moved it to Corral. So you didn't need to repost it :D it is in the Corral which is now where this one is too...and yeah.

Hopefully the mods will merge the two together for you.

I like it, although it can be a bit difficult to brush and keep in place. However, for me, only 'special' ponies (such as royalty or G2's unicorns) should have it, rather than the masses.

Personally, I don't like it. It's hard to brush and on the few tinsel-hair ponies I've had it's made their hair look AWFUL  :pout:.

I like it :) Even if it's not straight and messy, it's okay. We can't expect ponies to have perfect hair all the time haha

I don't like tinsel much, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. It's not my favourite thing, but if a pony has it, I'll put up with it. I wouldn't de-tinsel or anything like that.

Sometimes it really helps a pony with little hair variation stand out, so I'm all for it. I haven't had too much of a problem taming G3 tinsel yet!

I'm with most of you guys here... love it in theory and when it looks new and nice, but not so much when it gets all wild and out of control!

I hate it. In fact, for quite awhile I avoided any ponies with tinsel to my adult collection. Then I made an exception for G3 Merriweather and have considered making a couple more exceptions.

Definitely no tinsel. I used pluck it out when it was beyond repair, especially when the hair itself was in great condition.

I think I have the same opinion as everyone else... it's pretty, but unruly.

I liked tinsel when I was a kid and didn't really care about the hair being perfect and cared more about playing out a story with them, but now that I'm an adult and a photographer I prefer for hair to look decent. Tinsel is hard to put in place.

I really like tinsel, but I do wonder sometimes if Hasbro could find a replacement that holds up better over time and is easier to style.  I can't resist the sparkliness even in bad condition though!

I love tinsel! I've always loved sparkly things and I love it when light catches tinsel in ponies manes and tails. It doesn't bother me if its all wild and has a mind of its own because it can be forced to be straightened. Sometimes.

I'm a huge fan of g1 tinsel. I'm not against g3 tinsel, but I do agree the quality is different. I'm also not as flawless at styling pony hair as some here likely are, though, so that could be part of why I am more laid back. I also tend to like shimmery things, so that likely has a role as well.

Tinsel is my least favorite thing on ponies, but so is the type of glitter that's just slapped on and rubs off (and it's a huge pain to remove for customization purposes). Tinsel just has the tendency to stick up and not cooperate ever and just makes the pony's hair look all messy  -_-

I do not like it what-so-ever. Even when it's regularly in hair if it's behaving I don't like it. It makes it a pain to brush my pony's hair, the look reminds me of some cheap dollar store crown-thingy, and once it's ruined it's very hard to fix. I'll just stick to regular pony hair.

I love tinsel! And glitter. And all manner of sparkly, shiny things. XD Yeah, it’s a pain to brush and style... but so worth it, IMO.

As for replacing it... Wouldn’t that just be a matter of purchasing appropriate tinsel and rerooting it like any other fiber? I’ve never tried it personally, but I definitely would if a pony’s original tinsel was unsalvageable.

I once heard that someone tried to iron out krinkled tinsel, I think it ended up melting or something weird like that?

WaterDraw : By looking at G3's tinsel nature, I won't be surprised to see it melting easily. Also, they might tend to curl up like crazy and that would be counter-productive.
I try to iron them anyway, by applying less heat possible and that kind of helps a bit.
Tinsel is weird, I need to analyze more, that would be useful.

I only like it if it's 100% perfect.  When it is, it looks great!  But when it's not . . . yikes.

Also, I only like G1 tinsel and the G3 tinsel used on the set Waterfire was in.  It was heavier tinsel and colored to match the ponies' manes instead of just being pearly / translucent.  The pearly G3 tinsel goes wild too easily.

I like tinsel, but I don't like the amount of work metallic tinsel takes to get it straightened again one by one. I do it wth a small hair straightening iron for travel and it works pretty well. The results are often worth it, when they are close to "as new". Pearly tinsel however... ugh. If it's minty, it is great but no way to repair it, once crincled. I once did some research and found that Sulky Sliver Metallic most probably is the stuff they used. At least one can use it in order to replace tinsel and the colors are right, too. They even have that multi colored tinsel the Starlight Babies have.

Yeah, tinsel is a bit of a mystery. I think certain kinds of cheap colored tinsel can have it's color scraped off easily. I believe I once had some kind of knock-off pony with pink tinsel hair and after brushing through it, the pink scraped off to reveal it was just the regular greyish type underneath. I hope it isn't the same for any of the cheaper ponies with tinsel

I actually can't remember if I've made my stance on tinsel here yet. If I did, oops, but I don't think I did so I'll do it now. :P

As with a lot of people, it depends. I like it for the most part, G1 tinsel is generally pretty nice, and colored tinsel in all the generations is pretty good. But as some others have said, clear G3 tinsel tends to be problematic. I definitely notice that most of my G3s who have troublesome tinsel have the clear kind, whereas my G3s with colored tinsel are much, much better. G3s I have with really frizzy hair also tend to have really nasty, crinkled tinsel as well.

But when tinsel isn't messed up, it's beautiful and I love it. I like the bit of sparkle it adds!

I LOVE tinsel! I'm a complete sucker for sparkly things, it's just sooo pretty!

I once heard that someone tried to iron out krinkled tinsel, I think it ended up melting or something weird like that?

It can melt, but I've had luck straightening both pearly and metallic tinsel. I tend to straighten all the hair first, then grab a chunk of hair (properly wet with conditioner) and some tinsel and run it over fast with a travel straightener. So far I've never had anything melt, unless I've accidentally clamped down on it for too long, although I advice caution with this, and to use a low-heat iron/setting.

I like tinsel too if it’s been straightened - it does work if you do it quickly and don’t leave the heat on for too long, like Shaiyeh said.
