Title: Pony Urban Legends
Post by: hathorcat on May 19, 2012, 12:51:53 PM
The beginners mistakes thread made me think back to when I started collecting and I remembered some of the "rumours" which used to float around about certain ponies and certain lines. My favourite back then being Non So Soft Fifi...does anyone remember the pictures of her which turned up and the speculation as to whether she was real or not?

I wondered what other Pony Urban legends you remember - whether they turned out to be true or false?

The only thing i can remember is about a Greek Bride Firefly and the Prototype Toola Roola in the diva pose with a G1 Brush.

I heard that if you go to Vermillion City's docks and use Strength on the truck you'll find a MIB Rapunzel underneath.

Make sure not to abuse the glitch too much, otherwise you'll ruin the game and lose ALL your ponies.

You'll have to transform twilight Sparkle using the horadric cube :)

I remember one that might qualify, there was a picture floating around way back when of some G1 baby ponies that where supposed to have come with matching dolls. I don't think they where ever released.

Don't know if those would qualify as an urban legend - they are real after all, just never actually made it to mass production.  First Tooth Baby Sundance is similar, Baby Gametime/Sugarcake as boys, or the Fairy Brights.

Oooo hathorcat you always have the greatest ideas for threads!!

I don't know if the white Windy counts as an urban legend, I know it's debated whether she exists or not. I think the photos I've seen of the white body/blue symbol combo are beautiful, either way!

Purple sugarberry. It ended up being a doctored photo, but was still urban legendary whilst it lasted.

Lil tot being sold for children's cancer or a hospital or whichever!

She was for toys for tots, hence the name Lil' Tot!

How about that white Argie Cool Breeze?!  I had a whole thread on the old Arena trying to authenticate/debunk!  I think we concluded that she did not exist, but was instead a green Argie CB that appeared white because of the lighting.  I'm still kind of holding out hope that she does indeed exist thought!

I remember some person coming into the arena a while ago and bragging about having unreleased G4s.

She went on about having G4 Minty in its package, and having the Applejack and Star Dreams set, when I think it had just been leaked/announced. Also she talked about having many other sets that were going to come out (but gave no details).

She also said "I'll post pics when I have my own account," and things like "oh, I've had that Applejack and Star Dreams set for a while."

Sure... I totally believe you  ;)  That was hilarious and awesome that SoSilver got unreleased merch though, so it must happen sometimes!

But seriously, even bizarre claims like this might get you thinking, and add fuel the rumor mill.

I thought NSS Fifi was real, as one of the small things I do remember as a child was wanting the blue pony with the pink dogs on it. If I saw a prototype in a leaflet or something I don't know, heck it could have been a convincing fakie I guess. Or just the SS version.

BBE Sunlight? Need I say more? To this day I loose sleep over her!

How about TJ? He was brown with white hair and hearts symbol like Peachy. Way back before there were very many people on the internet from outside North America he surfaced and there were numerous theories about him. I believe he may have been the first "Nirvana" to show up and everyone was confused. Some thought he was a custom but there were others who thought prototype or limited release or exceptionally rare or something like that. He was named TJ because he looked like Megan's (not MLP) horse from the beginning of Firefly's Adventure and there was a theory that he may have come with some editions of the Megan's Place playset based on that similarity.

Of course now we know she's a Macau pony.

And there's this. It took me forever to come to the conclusion that it was the lighting, judging from all the other photos from this seller.
I wish she was really white, though. :( Seems like just a bad photo can make a pony appear like something we've never seen before.

But that Sunlight is scary to me.....

One from before the internet really took off:

Baby Shaggy was a twin named "Topsy" and the other one "Turvey" had the same bear but it was right side up. It seemed very believable in grade school w/neighbors & etc.

Oh yes, the unnamed white pony with rainbow hair and a rainbow for a symbol! People were claiming she was supposed to come with the Pretty Parlor because in both scenes in Firefly's Adventure she is seen with an orange tabby cat riding on her back (and the cat comes with the Parlor). But as far as I know, there's never been a prototype seen of her or any evidence that a toy of her was supposed to exist. (Though I've seen some nice customs of her!)

Is there a picture of the doctor purple Sugarberry? I'm sure curious about what it looked like.

I know there must be prototypes out there, but it seems odd that Hasbro would make a super teeny tiny batch of one pony for retail, which would have to be the case for some of these legendary ponies. But still, it's fun to speculate.
Title: Re: Pony Urban Legends
Post by: Betelgeuse on May 21, 2012, 11:23:29 PM
This one comes directly from my years in grade-school:
"with crystals in their eyes and symbols all over their bodies there were ponies taller than a G1 and as slender as a G2, they were the characters of the television special that only was on television in Alaska at one in the morning"
I seriously don't know how I believed that as a kid, but strangely enough I can just about remember my friend having two or more of these similar to G1s but a bit like G2 ponies. Most likely some sort of Canadian fakie but I still search for these when I get the chance.

EDIT
Also the "unreleased" rainbow ponies special advertised at the end of the first special. Apparently it's real but really really rare.
I want to watch it pretty badly and always dreamed I'd see it.

This isn't an urban legend any more, cause I have her sitting in my guest room, but apparently the giant G3 butterscotch plush had been destroyed by Hasbro, when in fact someone commandeered her and onsold her to a nice lady for her daughter to play with *shudders* I picked her up for spinky today and had a talk with the lady, apparently she brought her years ago and she's been sitting unused in her daughters room for some time. I am still gobsmacked this girl actually exists. Its amazing to see her in person.

Just to clarify, you mean the 15-second advertisement is real but really rare, not the special itself, right? I'm 99.99% positive that rainbow-hair pony special was never made. We've seen a couple shots of the animated itself kicking around the internet, and every once in a while someone comes forward claiming they have watched it as a kid or seen it in some back shelf of an old video rental store--but never offering any proof. And the tape has never been found.

And I'm sure if the special existed there would still be copies of it somewhere, youtube or in Hasbro's records--somewhere. Things like this don't just vanish without a trace.

I'm putting the existence of the rainbow-hair pony animated feature strictly in the urban legend category... unless someone actually comes forward with it. :P

The Rainbow Ponies are some of my favorites, and I do love that short animated clip.

It looks like a promo for the toys, though.  The voiceover doesn't match the animation at all (and sounds like a generic "if you liked this, there will be more pony animations soon").  And I know that a lot of commercials in the 80s had mini animated sequences interspersed with actual shots of the toys being played with.  I could see that clip being used there, as it's just the ponies and doesn't show anything approaching a story.

The scene of Windy shaking out her mane makes me think the original voiceover said something about the beautiful rainbow hair.  Maybe the commercial was scrapped (I've never seen a Rainbow pony commercial before), and since the animation was already done, they just popped it on the end of the video.  Or maybe the Rainbow pony commercial was supposed to go there, and someone thought that a toy commercial was a bad idea, so they redubbed the animation?  We may never know...

-----
Rapunzel under the truck you say?  I heard she came with a pink version of Twinkles the Cat.  :3
And if you throw a Bombchu into the lava outside Ganon's castle, you can find that unnamed Rainbow-haired pony from the first special inside the Light Temple. She's guarding the Triforce. :3

@ember86 and Evening_Moonstone:

I've never heard that theory before but it certainly sounds plausible!! Especially since the opening of the rainbow-hair scene (where the two pegs slide/fall down the rainbow into the water) is re-used animation from the beginning of Firefly's Adventure.

It would certainly explain why the rainbow-hair pony special never appeared.

Oh my gosh!  I recently watched Firefly's Adventure and spotted that pony and wondered "who the heck is THAT?"  XD  I just assumed it was a pony I wasn't too familiar with and left it at that.  It's totally weird that she doesn't actually exist, given how specific looking her character looks!

He suggests visiting a Suncoast Video and asking them to research MLP videos. "Chances are there'll be an unfamiliar title in there! It will be pricey because it's rare, but it is in existance!".

This was posted on that website and I remember somone coming forth years ago and claiming this! Somone needs to contact that company and put an end to this madness!

It's easy to say anything online lol. No proof = doubtful

In 2004 Rhino Studios put out a dvd set that included all the season 1 episodes plus both short animation specials (Firefly's Adventure and Escape from Catrina). Within a year they also put out other dvd's that included the full-length movie and all the season 2 episodes. If they were able to put out all of that, you would think they would have put out the rainbow-hair pony special as well, if it really existed.

I think we can all agree that the 'rainbow haired pony special' is that stuff that pony urban legends are made of.

Haha exactly this! It makes me CRAZY! Knowing that it MIGHT be out there but also MIGHT not be!

Wasn't there a urban legend about 'the Mysterious Pony' seen in Firefly's adventure? I think it was she was supposed to be released with the Pretty Parlor? Anyone know the full legend?

Oh yes, the unnamed white pony with rainbow hair and a rainbow for a symbol! People were claiming she was supposed to come with the Pretty Parlor because in both scenes in Firefly's Adventure she is seen with an orange tabby cat riding on her back (and the cat comes with the Parlor). But as far as I know, there's never been a prototype seen of her or any evidence that a toy of her was supposed to exist. (Though I've seen some nice customs of her!)

Oh my gosh!  I recently watched Firefly's Adventure and spotted that pony and wondered "who the heck is THAT?"  XD  I just assumed it was a pony I wasn't too familiar with and left it at that.  It's totally weird that she doesn't actually exist, given how specific looking her character looks!

Awesome thread.  XD  I want to see more pics associated with all these mysteries!

Is there a chance that pony could be Starbow? Or maybe Raincurl??

I don't think they were made yet.

There was definitely no pony of that design existing at the time, Midnight Castle came out in what, year 2? 3?  Early on, that's for sure. My guess would be she's just an extra put in to "fill out the ranks" because they needed another pony in some shots.

Random tangent: *watches commercial* ...why is the ice cream shop shaped like a shoe? XD

Random response: This drives me crazy too..someone had a few too many alcoholic beverages when that one was conjured up...."A sweet shop what shall we make it look like...a house? no...a giant ice cream cone? no....a sundae? no...a shoe? PERFECT!"

Yeah I never understood that logic either. Satin Slipper ice cream shop. *boggles* If it were selling pony shoes, it'd make perfect sense. But no. Food stuffs. Also the ONLY food shop in Ponyland if I remember rightly.

I still want to know where the babies came from before the boy ponies showed up. Or did they do finding them in a cabbage patch and stuff?

Yeah a lot of people in the past have stated that she might be a prototype of Raincurl or Starbow, but really those ponies came years and years later. And the hair/symbol don't match up exactly to either of them.

I find it interesting that she is the only 'not real' pony in the special, though. (I mean, the only one without a toy counterpart.) Even the background ponies that didn't get a single line, like Cotton Candy, were carefully colored to be just like their toy counterpart. And yet this little rainbow pony doesn't exist! (Unless you count the porcelain baby.)

According to the UK MLP comic, they came from a reflection in a magic mirror, and other magical things! XD

It's also speculated that she's the porcelain "First Born" with a slighty altered symbol.  With the cat sitting on her back, First Born's symbol would have been mostly obscured, but if it's on her butt like a normal pony it would be completely visible.  Her hair colors match exactly too.

I personal like to call her Dreadlocks, because of her hair.

I heard that if you go to Vermillion City's docks and use Strength on the truck you'll find a MIB Rapunzel underneath.

And if you jump through the pipe in world 1-2, you find Bubbles and Seashell in the collector's pose.
