Title: My restorations :) *will end up being pic heavy*
Post by: Starshinescustoms on July 11, 2013, 01:27:49 PM
Hey everyone :)
I've bought quite a few pony lots recently, including quite a few lots with G1's in them. As a rule, I prefer not to bait G1's unless they are really baity, and certainly not if they're rare.
So I decided to try restoring some instead. I've discovered that I really enjoy it! I love taking poor 'well loved' ponies and making them look pretty again  :P I'm now buying lots of really baity ponies that I don't even need just so that I can restore them
Anyway, I thought I'd share some of them on here. Rather than create loads of separate threads for each pony I do, I will update this one to save space on the Arena.
Any ponies I don't have I will keep for my own collection, but when I end up with doubles I will sell them and put the money towards restoring more G1's!  :P
Any criticism will be gladly welcomed, I would love to improve. I want to go on a mission to save G1's now!

First up is Glory. She's the third pony I've restored, but the first one 100% complete, so the first one I'll show here.
I had to remove the repainted 'star' very carefully in hopes that there was an outline left to guide me on reglittering her symbol. Sadly, there wasn't much of one for the trail, and the star had gone completely. I had to go completely by eye. I reglittered using PTE glitter, which is apparently normally used for nails ect. I don't think it's quite as fine as hasbro's glitter, but it's still pretty fine. I gave her a new tail using 'Sour Grapes' nylon. She was sunfaded for a while, which brought her up a brighter white, as well as doing a wonderful job on those purple marks on her display side!
I have decided to sell her as I already have Glory, though to be honest it was hard to list her as I've grown quite attached to her.
Here she is before:

Please forgive the desk. I took it in the early hours of the morning and I was too tired/lazy to set up the white thing I usually use for photos  :P
Here she is afterwards:

As I said earlier, any criticism is welcomed!  :)

Oh wow! She looks fantastic. Getting the symbol so clearly defined is really difficult - a great job :)

She looks great!  Do you mind sharing how you removed her painted star?  I have a twilight that I "fixed" when I was younger, and I'd like to try to repair my handiwork.

I'm going to echo everyone else!

You did an excellent job!  The symbol is practically perfect!  I see a lot of glitter symbol restores come out looking chunky and very obviously redone, but not yours!  Looks original!

More please!  Restoration photos are my favorite!

Thank you everyone! I'm glad you all like her. I'm really proud of how she turned out, to be honest I wasn't sure I could save her.
 that's....the same Glory you got from me?!!!!! No way!!! :worshippy: she looks STUNNING now, like new!! I am so glad you have made her beautiful again!
How did you get here before I had the chance to PM you?!
Yes, that's her! :) I'm working on saving Love Melody (she is definitely being added to my collection!), and I have already cleaned up Blossom. She still has pindot, but she's a lot cleaner  ^.^

I used white spirit. It's milder than what I usually use (cellulose thinners). I rubbed it very gently, hoping to reveal whatever was left of the symbol.
I kind of felt bad in a way. Whoever 'repaired' her obviously put a lot of work into trying to match her symbol.
Hope you can repair her!

Wow, that is amazing. How did you make the symbol so flat? What materials did you use (glitter, glue)?

I love doing this too! I actually started with my childhood Moondancer and childhood ponies. You can see the Moondancer over there in my avatar pic. I'm working on a batch of restorations right now, in between algebra and spending time with my kiddos (so it's been SLOW going).
Any how, you did a great job! I will definitely be stalking your thread to see more!

Thank you for the help!  I can't wait to see more restorations!  It gives me hope for my VERY loved ponies.

Wow, that is amazing. How did you make the symbol so flat? What materials did you use (glitter, glue)?
I used something called PTE glitter. I bought it off of ebay. It's usually used for nail art ect. It's pretty fine. Not quite as fine as habro's, but not too far off. I used a brush on sealant as a glue. I didn't think it would be strong enough, but after several tests, it turned out it was! I 'painted' the symbol shape with the sealant first and then applied the glitter with a brush :)
If it had gone slightly off, it was fairly easy to correct by pushing it in line with a cocktail stick.

I love doing this too! I actually started with my childhood Moondancer and childhood ponies. You can see the Moondancer over there in my avatar pic. I'm working on a batch of restorations right now, in between algebra and spending time with my kiddos (so it's been SLOW going).

Wow, she looks fantastic! One of the other ponies I am in the process of doing is Moondancer. I have always wanted her, and I finally got her a few weeks back - albeit with a detached tail and major glitter loss  :P
When she's done she will be joining my herd ^.^

Thank you for the help!  I can't wait to see more restorations!  It gives me hope for my VERY loved ponies.

You're very welcome! I really hope it works out well. Make sure you test it somewhere first, though. I'd hate to be responsible for ruining your ponies >_< I'd avoid the symbols, eyes ect to be safe, though I think it takes a lot of rubbing before white spirit takes them off? I'm not sure though. I don't use it much as I'm impatient and just reach for the cellulose thinners instead

Hehe us corral mods live here lol XD

You really do  I'm not sure if I've posted a topic in the corral lately that you haven't replied to.
It's 2am and you're still on... Go get some sleep!  Ignore the fact that I'm still online...

In a very fancy cave...they just feed us occasionally with chocolate and rum.

Well, can't say much for the rum as I've never had it, but they give you chocolate?! Where do I sign?!
 :P
