Title: The Stolen Shadow (G1 book)
Post by: LadyMoondancer on May 15, 2018, 09:56:05 AM
I scanned this one in a while ago and thought I'd share it!  It's a story from a UK storybook, which is why the pink sea pony is named Wavebreaker instead of Wavedancer.   :)

I'll post more in a bit!  For now I'd just like to say that I wish we'd seen this guy animated, preferably in RaMC style.  An evil shape-shifting enchanter with "scissors shaped like twisting snakes"?  Yeeeees.

I am not sure if it is this one or if it the Man in the Moon but one of them has two editions and the earlier edition features the same artwork of the UK sea ponies but the names of the US ones. Without being home to take my wardrobe apart I am not sure which it is...

I also think there's a spoken word version of this story? Looking at the text I feel like I can 'hear' it being told. I seriously can hear Seashell in my head, explaining her ordinariness.

We had some nice stories :D This guy should go hang out with the Trolls in their Castle of Darkness.

Oooh, thanks for sharing! I love seeing the old storybooks, the illustrations are pretty.
And you're right, it would have been SUPER cool to see this in RaMC animation style. *o*

I feel like you're right about it originally having a tape, Taffeta.  :)  It seems like a lot of UK books had cassettes.  The only one I have is one about the Weather Witch losing her wand.  The weird thing is she is always drawn like a beautiful young woman, but on the tape they give her an "old crone" voice!

Back to the story . . .

"If she fails the enchanter will use the shadow to make a pony just like Seashell.  Then his magic will spirit our Seashell away to the dark mines where she will lose her memory and forget all about us, and spend the rest of her life pulling the carriages of the goblin miners."

WOW, THAT IS DARK.  (I love it.)  I wonder if that's what happened to the Twinkle Eye ponies (whose comic origins involved them digging for jewels underground until they went blind).  Or are there multiple pony-enslaving mines in Ponyland??

Of course, in the mines they stop to have tea parties and girly stuff like that, because that's what G1 is all about.

...I have all of the tapes that I could find from my collection now digitised thanks to my lovely father but they are at home. It may be that I have this one and can supply the audio track at some point. The text is so familiar I feel like I must have it somewhere.

Yours sounds like the cross weather witch ;)

There is a lovely story on one of the UK tapes about some of the unicorns, which doesn't have a book. I think Skyflier and Powder...I can't remember. We had a lot of spoken word MLP stuff, because we had a lot of books with cassettes and then we had some cassettes on their own as well...

I have a few from the US too, but not so many.

I love the illustrations and the story is fantastic. I read a lot as a kid and liked the dark/adventuress stories the best. Thus my ponies were always on various quests, when they came home it was tea party time. Also I forgot Majesty had magical horse shoes.  :good:

Thanks for uploading this LadyMoondancer. :)  :lovey: :lovey: :lovey: I love it so far. I have several of the US MLP storybooks that had the matching cassette tape but the only cassette tape I have is "The Magic Ranbow."  The cover is very similar to the cover of the "My Little Pony Adventure Book"

I don't own any of the UK storybooks yet though I'd love too.  :)

The good old days of ponyfeathers, happy hooves, heavy hooves and applesauce.

@Ponyfan, I might have some doubles. If you want me to I can check when I go home in June. The small ones are pretty light and don't cost a lot to ship.

Thanks Taffeta. That sounds good. :)   Are there any US stories you're looking for?

I love how Seashell says "shells and shimmering sand" and "pony feathers"

@ Taffeta and anyone else UK based, I'm always looking for UK books with good pages (not drawn on) but bad spines.   Unfortunately the scanning process is VERY rough on the UK books, and I'd love to scan books that already have shot spines.  This also goes for any of the annuals, including the G3 ones.

I will keep that in mind. 1988 is prone to loose pages and spine damage.
