Title: Have you had an encounter with a famous person?
Post by: Loa on March 12, 2021, 03:53:56 PM
I once had fish & chips with Sir Edmund (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_Hillary) Hillary.

How about you?

Does touching someone's hand count? I doubt he even saw my face, I was in a crowd

i think that counts.
outside of conventions uuhh not really?
we had one con where we kept running into  Raphael Sbarge even when we went out to dinner we ended up in line with him. Also Bruce Campbell, though I thought he was just one of the insurance guys that was having an expo thing at the same building the convention was at they were all affectionately called the MiB crowd since.. well they were all men in black X3. but imagine my surprise when the guy I was talking to idly was Bruce freaking Campbell.

Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays showed up at a party I was at & actually chilled wi people. He signed my Doodle Book & is to date the most famous person in it. After doing that for me he bumped into another fan who'd been to the same early parties as he had & seeing the two reminisce was the most beautiful thing I've ever witnessed.

Most of the people more specific to my fave music were cool wi hanging out wi folks too, including huge names in that scene. The only exception was Darren Styles. He spent the entire time surrounded by twenty security guards who let nobody near him to speak or anything else. Literally everybody else i heard play a set would at least say cheers for supporting me & pose in a photo, even the quietest ones.

I guess Jenny Nicholson is the closest I got since she's popular outside of MLP. I saw her at the last Bronycon, she said she was looking for fat face flutters. It was a highlight of the trip, I really like her content!

I met Bill Nye (the Science Guy) and showed him some specimens in the museum I where I work, that was pretty awesome!  He was nice and seemed to enjoy seeing everything  :)

I used to work at Disney World so...yes. I've performed in the Candlelight Processional Cast Choir with various stars as the narrator.  Robby Benson, Neal Patrick Harris, Gary Sinise and Andy Garcia were some of them.  Gary Sinise's wife is very nice.  I once did a private safari for Senator McCain and his family (I used to drive the Kilimanjaro Safari at the Animal Kingdom).  I've met a lot of people at various Cons over the years as well. Rob Schneider is shorter than I thought he'd be, but he's also very nice.  The first time I met Zachary Levi was at his Nerd HQ event in 2016.  I work in a library and have had various authors come like Sarah Eden, Lisa Mangum, Tyler Whitesides and Brandon Sanderson.  I actually recorded backup vocals for a local production of Mary Poppins and Tyler Whitesides and his wife were part of the backup choir.

One of the guys I went to college with has been in several Disney movies.  He was one of the basketball players in High School Musical.  He was also in Halloweentown High, the Good Luck Charlie movie and was a rock musician in a musical called Saturday's Warrior.

When I was 15, I went to a Rise Against concert for my birthday. Before the concert that day, I went to a record store with my parents where the band was doing signings. Since I got a record from there, I got a special place in line, SECOND!! I got there later in the night and got to skip a huge line, I was so nervous. We went up to the band when they started the signings and I mentioned to him that we had the same eye color (heterochromia) and he was amazed! He got right up in my face to look at my eyes and I'd be lying if I say I wasn't tearing up with joy. We were talking about how long my eyes have been two different colors and if I was ever bullied (he was in school because of it when he was a kid, but what's there to bully?? Having two different unique eye colors is the best!) They weren't allowing pictures at this signing with the band, but he let me take a picture with him. It was an amazing experience!

I performed in the Candlelight Processional Cast Choir too for several years at Disneyland. Working in Entertainment for 6 years I met more celebrities than I honestly can remember. Some of them are very nice, some are okay, and some are just not kind.

Lots of wrestlers. When NXT was still the developmental territory for WWE, they used to come practice at my city's entertainment center. What was cool about it, aside from the small crowd, was that the guys and ladies that weren't working in the ring that night would do other things. I had my hand stamped by Corey Graves when he was working the door one night, lol. Sometimes they would have WWE Legends there too. I've met and had pics taken with a bunch of them - for free! I think they'd bring big names in to help draw a crowd. It was really cool and my sister and I went regularly. When NXT started getting bigger they moved up to Tampa, which is a ways away, and stopped coming down here.

I've also met Steve Buscemi! He attends the local film festival every year. He's really nice! And a very snappy dresser

Yes. When I was little I got to meet Michael who the host of Fox Kids at least on our local Fox station but shaking hands wasn't good enough for me. I made him give me a hug. Also got to meet several Contemporary Christian artists. When I was 12 my dad was head of the audio crew and Scott Krippayne did a concert at my church. Got to be 'backstage' with Scott Krippayne' in the choir room and it was so neat. After the concert he autographed cds and a photo for me and I gave him a picture I drew for him. A year later he came back for a youth group all nighter and made my night when he said I looked familiar because I knew how many people he had to have seen between that first concert and t hen. Also got to meet Babbie Mason when she sang at my church. I gave her a picture I drew for her of a bear and she sang a children's song about a bear with me when I gave it to her. I was so shy about it though.  Then on a youth outing to Cedarville University got to meet Solomon's Wish and got an autographed photo of them. I still have both that and the autographed Scott Krippayne one. So I know maybe a lot of people haven't heard of the Christian artists but they were a pretty big deal to me :) Also got to meet Mary Costa, the voice of Sleeping Beauty at my church's Father/Daughter banquet one year. That was so neat. Everyone got an autographed lithograph from the movie and she autographed a drawing I'd done of Princess Aurora for me. Still have both.  Met Dan Quayle when he was a guest at my church and still have that autograph.

Totally.  Sometimes it's not the stars but their managers that are awful.  When I was working a booth at Big Easy Con they told us we could use a restroom that was BEHIND the "star" area and the manager for some kid from Stranger Things gave me the third degree about trying to go to the bathroom--even though I was not in an area that I shouldn't be in, I had checked with the con staff. But the lady from the booth next to us told me that nobody said anything to her-even though she went at the same time as me.  Of course, I also look about 15 years younger than I am and the other lady looked older so I'm sure that the stupid manager just thought I was some dumb fangirl.  I almost told the kid to be careful how he lets her treat people because he never knew who his next writer was going to be but I just rolled my eyes and let it go rather than get into an argument with a bleached blonde psycho from California.

Quite a few...I was a bartender in a hotel for a number of years in college, and being the highest end one in the city I lived in, it was where anyone famous would stay if they did. It was kind of cool when they would hang in the bar, for sure, but the most interesting part was taking room service orders up to them because you'd actually be stepping into their living space for a few minutes. It's strange seeing their normal, everyday possessions...like, hey, so-and-so just uses Colgate toothpaste? I thought they'd have some fancy, expensive stuff that only a celebrity can afford. Some encounters were better than others; some lukewarm, some indifferent, one downright creepy, and some were really super cool. Eddie Money was my favorite, he and his band came in for drinks before a show, and despite the bar being super busy and I was caught off-guard completely by myself before the night help came in, he was so, so kind. Kevin Costner and Martin Short were other notables while I worked there.

One night I was helping out as a favor to a former employer by closing up his bar at an Italian restaurant when he was short staffed. This place was also part of a hotel, but it was always dead, and this night was no exception. The Gin Blossoms were in town for a music festival and staying there. They had the whole bar to themselves, and they hung out with me until closing time...those guys were cool.

I was pretty big into the music scene in the mid-2000's, and working in the bar scene, I had several friends in the beer/liquor industry who always had hookups to concerts/shows, and also a lot of pre-party/after-party backstage stuff, so I met a lot of musicians in those days.

My grade 8 teacher was the mom of one of the tigercats.  Umm..tyheres a bunch more.  My family kind of sort of has luck with run ins with famous people--especiallly when we arent looking specifically for it!

Oh, one more...when I was a teenager in the late 90's, my friend, his cousin and I were at a truck stop and we saw Tom Wopat using the payphone. He looked really agitated at whoever he was talking to. The cousin wanted to go get his autograph; I begged him not to because I didn't think we should annoy him. He did anyway...I was so embarrassed. I literally did a facepalm and mouthed 'sorry' to him; he in turn rolled his eyes at the cousin as he ran back to our car.

I met a lot of voice actors from Friendship is Magic, G.M Barrow (MLP novel writer), and other FIM staff at Pony conventions if that counts. I had some amazing genuine conversations with many of them. It was awesome :)
One even spotted me later at the con music event and asked me to dance with him :D I never dance but it was the coolest thing, he was a seriously nice guy.
Met a few famous fan artists too. Maybe that's more to me but it was certainly cool to meet them.
Besides that never random encounters that I know of.

Many years ago I was working in Staples, specifically in the ‘Business Machines’ department (printers, shredders, etc).  One day Terry Pratchett casually strolls into my department with his wife.  I’m behind the counter with a couple of coworkers and I am dying, I’d already been a huge Pratchett fan for years at this point, I was hissing “OMG IT’S TERRY PRATCHETT” to them and they were like... “who?”

Philistines.

Anyway I scuttle over to see if I can help.  They’re shopping for an overhead projector for their niece, a freshly qualified teacher.  I’m trying to be super professional and impressive, resolved to wow them with my cutting-edge knowledge of overhead projectors and then ask for an autograph after I’d checked them out.  I’d successfully held it together as I’d worked my way through our display models, but when I’d got to the last one instead of saying “and this projector” I said “and this Pratchett” and then I just shrivelled up in mortification while he and his wife creased up.  They were really nice about it but I was so embarrassed!  I was too discombobulated to ask for an autograph.

I’ve also been formally introduced to Prince Charles and I’ve met two Omani princes and an Emerati sheik, but for me Terry Pratchett is miles more exciting!

Been in contact with group members of the band Blessid Union of Souls for close to 20 years now. Most people forget who they are or don't even realize that's their song. Awesome guys, highly recommended tunes.
Oh yes, I fangirled most tastefully at Hugo Ferreria, lead singer of the band Tantric (formerly Days of the New). That made my year, I love him...

Yes,many times, and it is overrated.

My best advice is, don't meet your idols

The one thing I find good with celebs, if they are the curious type, is that you can talk to them about anything because they have experienced so much. Downside, a major one, is that many of them talk like they are being interviewed. You many not see it at first but eventually you just..what da... ?

And the worst, dating one, especially band members, they are often on loooooooong tours..girls hate on you, bullying like crazy. I just ..yeah..not big on celebs.

some band members before they got more popular, and actors at Comicons. never run into any in an unexpected place, and tbh if I did I probably wouldn't talk to them.

I met Chris Evans in a bar once and he was very pleasant. I met David Attenborough and unfortunately he was as snobby and pretentious as you'd expect from someone of his age and class. I met Goldie once, unfortunately he was coming down some steps at high speed as I was about to climb up them... but I still reckon it counts...

Oh yummy  :inlove:

I served Luke Wilson (the lesser popular Wilson brother lol) at the bookstore once.   I knew who he was immediately but didn't say anything,  just rang his 2 Native American history books through and pretended he wasn't an actor (I'm a goof and love the movie ''Old School')

When I went to go swipe his credit card for payment I saw written on the back in the signature line "ASK FOR ID".  I looked up at him with a questioning smile and hesitantly asked him "Do I really need to ask for your ID, cause I have a funny feeling you are who it says you are".

He was almost embarrassed and said 'no, you don't need to' and I continued to smile (smirk?) and bagged his purchases. He was almost free when a couple of girls came up and asked for a picture.   He obliged and I took it for them using their phone.

I totally taped his signed Visa slip on the cash office wall instead of sending it to head office 😆

I’ve met famous people at cons but only while asking for sketches from comic book artists and signatures from comic book authors (MLP mostly, PPG once). Oh, and Christy Marx who was sitting rather forlornly at a table with not much at it and happily signed a Jem picture and chatted with me about it for a while.

I hung out with or at least talked with a fair number of indies bands from the Osaka area and a few from Tokyo, including Daigo Naitō back when he was Daigo☆Stardust. He might not be very well known outside of Japan and the rest weren’t even well known inside Japan.  ^^;

I also had a best friend from high school who became a pretty well-known podcaster. Well known enough that he has sold books, gone on tour and branched out to other media. That’s really, really surreal. Last time I spoke with him he got me free tickets to his show but standing in line with fans to talk to a friend? Not the best feeling and there was barely any time to catch up...

Not me, but my dad. He was waiting to pick me up from school choir or something and started talking to a guy and asking how he was going and stuff without realising it was the leader of the opposition at the time (Bill Shorten). It was very funny telling my dad who he was talking to after we had left.

When my dad was still a long haul truck driver, he broke down on the side of the highway once. The country singer Clint Black stopped and had his mechanic look at my dad's truck. My dad at the time had no idea who he was but after that he bought all of Black's albums and became a fan. I hate country music but figure he must be a nice guy to have done that.

Lol, that would have been hilarious.

Today I got to talk to one of my academic role models about the entomology-related masters thesis I'm trying to write and it was a delightful experience! I'm not sure if she can be defined as famous, but she has written a few successful books and is quite frequently in the media in my country. I was so nervous and very surprised she showed interest in talking with me, but I think it went well!

Well I was in a car (sleeping) granny was driving and we where on our way to Harvard Illinois from central Wisconsin (like Dells area) only for a day trip - there and back to do something at a bank for my uncle Donnie who was in the passenger seat at the time. I had this strangest dream that I met Mark Wahlberg at the Restaurant Cheesecake Factory. I woke up thinking that was Odd it seemed so real. So Granny had already stopped at the bank now we need something to eat, for dinner so there is a restaurant called Kelley's Restaurant in Harvard IL. So granny is joking around, "we are going to eat some Kelly here" (Because my name is Kelly) and I said, "Oh you don't want to eat me, I'm all fatty and Ya wouldn't want that." Thankfully I said this outside of Kelley's Restaurant, because when I looked over to my Left at a booth Mark Wahlberg was sitting there Looking at us giggling at each other. I was so surprised to see him Alone. he had his laptop with him and his glasses that where the props for the movie of "All the Money in the World" where sitting by his computer. I was No Way that this is happening right now!!! Granny new nothing about him or his movies decided to walk towards him and grab a seat closest to him. I was like YESSSSS!!!!! this is my chance I walked up to him but then I decided to make it look like I was deciding my chair and I chose the chair across from him so I can have a good view while I eat, but not stare too much. there is about 5 people tops in this place not including the 2 waitresses me and Mark where the youngest in the place not including the 1 waitress. At the end of the meal when I was waiting for my granny and Uncle Donnie after I had paid (they ran to the bathroom) I was standing at the front. I was going to go introduce myself to Mark but I had no clue on what to say except Hi.... but I then felt like I should look at him and when I did We locked eyes and we stayed that way for like 3min tops.... it became a little awkward at the end but I don't think he minded.

That's super weird that you had a dream about him and then you saw him. But the main reason I had to comment was because I briefly lived in Harvard, IL (like 20 years ago when I was a teenager) and there is not a lot of draw there, so I just think it's so hilarious that Mark Wahlberg was there! I wonder if he knows people there or something. I'm trying to wrack my brain to remember Kelley's restaurant. I probably ate there back in the day.

I wonder if he knows people there or something. I'm trying to wrack my brain to remember Kelley's restaurant. I probably ate there back in the day.

I was there between 4PM & 6PM (The sun was setting in the background) he had his laptop out so he wasn't in a rush to go anywhere soon. He was there first and I left before he did. His brother Donny lives in St. Charles Illinois Which is a few hours from there as well but I don't know exactly how long it takes to get to Donnies house from there... My Aunt lives in Bartlett Illinois which is literally next to St. Charles Illinois... so if I had to guess why he was there... Firstly let me run you by his week - The 6th of May (the Saturday Before I met him) it was his moms Birthday in Boston Area; MTV Movie Awards was the following day (Sunday) For the Transformers Movie, and from what he did from that Sunday to that Thursday to when I met him is unknown but I can only assume that he was plane hopping from one place to anther for one business or another (He is a businessman after all). He has a friend Named Tom who lives in Philadelphia and they are also business partners so he must of stopped by him for a bit. The morning of the day I met him he was at a Walburgers Grand-opening in Cleveland Ohio that was the 11th of May... As to why he decided to go to Harvard IL, that same night I think its because his brother lives in St. Charles Illinois and maybe Just maybe he wanted to go for a drive so he was looking for more locations for a Wahlburgers.
