I just finished Sailor Moon volumes 1-3.

Cool! Are you still reading the series? Right now I'm re-reading Ouran and intermittently reading a few others -- Honey So Sweet (highly recommend!), Nisekoi, and Kamisama Kiss. When the next volume comes out, I'll be reading Kimi ni Todoke. (As you can see I mostly like to read shoujou manga and lean towards romantic comedy.) I was rereading Dengeki Daisy and occasionally Otomen recently.

I'm up to Volume 4 of Sailor Moon. All of those you mention sound really interesting.

Haven't read a manga in ages! I miss it. I find it so hard to start up a new manga so usually I just re-read my old favorites.
I recommend "Red River" or "Anatolia Story" as it's also called"- A time-traveling, magical, romantic adventure.

I tend to like the dark/horror/gore type mangas xD
I am currently reading Tokyo Ghoul!
It's actually the first manga I've started collecting, previously I just checked things out from the library. :p

I haven't read manga in ages, because it's a hassle getting it in Japanese and I don't have the space to store it. The last manga I read was Kakumei no hi after it came up in an academic talk at my university, but otherwise I really haven't for a long time.

I used to read and translate Bleach manga for a community but that manga ended up such a train wreck that I haven't been back to it in a long time.

I was reading Harukanaru Toki no Naka De 5 but then it got dropped and I haven't begun on Haruka 6 yet because really I would rather read Haruka 5 manga. :/

So now I'm really just left with my manga kids' history books that I brought back from Japan which relate to my research. Kind of depressing really. I do love manga. I just have no space.

Furuba (Fruits Basket) was one of the first manga I read, ten years or so ago? For some reason I have some volumes in English, some in French and some in Japanese.

Oh, I know a manga I will be reading/would be reading if the mangaka recovers and gets back to writing it. Saiyuuki. Saiyuuki Reload Blast, to be accurate. I love Saiyuuki, <3. But its poor creator is ill so often that it's constantly on hiatus.

Oh, man! Here is where I declare myself fujoshi trash again  I usually read things that fall into the yaoi umbrella, but do branch out sometimes. My current reading list of active manga are :

I have Don't be Cruel but haven't settled to read it properly. I recently got Haikyuu! but again it's sitting on my pile waiting to be read. Most of my collection is sadly in storage ... Sooooooo many titles that are finished (or stopped) that I need to give a proper read through.

It makes me happy to see other people read manga ^.^ I don't know many people IRL who do! It's such a beautiful storytelling form.

@Taffeta, I think it's awesome that you can actually translate the manga, too. I know one Japanese character, the hiragana one they use for "no," since it's so distinctive. Yay me :) I feel proud whenever I can find it, lol.

You mean this one の? It is cute :D
I also like the 'a', because you can do silly faces with it like : あ。あ

...ahem, just destroyed your image of me as a translator >.>

I got roped into doing it basically because the fan scanlations of Bleach were being done  by a group who were simply rewriting bits and I was in a community of people who wanted to analyse every actual detail, not read a ton of swear words added in to juice up the fights. Bleach is/was a manga full of tons of easter egg type symbolism and clues to old Japan and stuff hidden underneath all the typical fight scenes, and so people wanted to know the specifics so they could discuss what those things meant and what they foreshadowed. Unfortunately the final arc, though still full of those things, no longer foreshadowed anything because it was a rushed finish that didn't answer most of the outstanding issues and killed off a character in a way that actually contradicts itself. That happened to be my favourite character, so yeah, I lost interest in the manga...

But yeah, translating manga is actually fun because it's not translating great blocks of text, just dialogue, so it doesn't take that long and is a bit of a brain break. And it is sometimes written in regional dialect or slang, but not in 500 year old Japanese grammar or stiff academic modern Japanese, which is what I mostly deal with for my PhD work -.-. So from that point of view I miss doing it :/. I do miss Bleach, but I miss it how it was, not how it ended up :/. It's literally the only globally super-mainstream shounen manga I have ever been a fan of, but the last arc ruined it. Sad times :/.

Japanese character babble in spoiler tags.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I love manga, but from the manga/anime I've seen that talks about manga creation, I think it would be a really sucky job. So many mangaka end up ill with stress and overwork because of the deadlines.

I can sympathize; I really don't like it when translators take too many liberties and mess up the manga or anime. It happens way too often! In manga I never get to see the original wording (not that I could read it if I could), but in anime it's a pet peeve of mine. I can understand a bit of Japanese when I hear it, and my sister comprehends even more, so when we watch anime together in Japanese with subtitles, sometimes we look at each other and are like, "Wait, that character just said 'I won't forgive you,' right, not 'You *$%%#$*' " (to give an extreme example).

I taught my support advisor at university the horse kanji because she had to see my work so much (which relates to horses and representation of warriors). It's meant to be a horse turning it's head back. I dunno if I see it...

To me it kind of looks like a little square animal with five legs (four tiny ones and a curved front one)

Thanks everyone. Sailor Moon is my first experience reading manga and now I know the Beauty and the Beast tie in manga I saw looked backwards.  I'm reading the Sailor Moon manga that's translated in to English since I can't read Japanese.  Taffeta I think that's amazing that you can translate manga from Japanese. :)

That's why I don't read manga in English. I'm not a manga snob, I don't have any issue with people reading or buying manga in English, nor do I think that it's at all superior to read it in Japanese. I read it in Japanese only because I am a detail geek and these days, having seen what people do to the original manga (some scanlations get translated from Japanese into Chinese and then into English O.o) I became really suspicious of (especially unofficial fan) translations. Bleach was super-bad for this, though. I think a lot of less mainstream manga (and especially shoujo type manga) have better translations, but there was such a rush to get the Bleach chapters translated first that people either made mistakes or generalised and you'd find a character suddenly being related to his best friend or jumping divisions from 13 to 3. And those were just the people who weren't trying to make themselves epic by rewriting the dialogue with curse words and cringeworthy slang.

With Bleach, while it ran, I generally preferred the anime because even though there were scenes missing and filler arcs, the manga scenes that appeared were almost totally exact to the original dialogue in the manga, and I liked that. As you say, too, it gives you the chance to know if there's a mistake, as the original dialogue is there and most people who watch anime are familiar with enough Japanese to pick out stuff like you just said. Fans are smart and not easily fooled.

Official translations at least are less likely to insert gratuitous swearwords though I admit I still haven't forgiven the official translation of one of my pet manga series turning an onmyouji into a 'sorcerer' and the name Sefuru into "Sefle". So glad that the anime version never got dubbed, that's all I'm going to say.

@Ponyfan, manga is fine in any language. So long as the people translating do a good job, no reason why you shouldn't enjoy it in English and Sailor Moon is a classic xD though it does take some getting used to, reading from what we think of as the back to the front.

I totally think that, if you're going to go down the manga path, ones mentioned above such as Fruits Basket and Ouran Host Club are a lot of fun xD. Fruits Basket (some people also call it Furuba) is really lovely. Sad in places, but really lovely. And Ouran is funny and pokes fun at itself as well, which is nice. Although I have a feeling that's a really long manga, isn't it? Furuba is about 23 volumes or something, but I think Ouran is longer than that?

I was actually inspired to learn Japanese from a series called Fushigi Yuugi. It all had to do with a friend linking me a music video on youtube for one of Tasuki's songs in Japanese, and it got so stuck in my head that then I wanted to know the words.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
So I began watching the anime on youtube. And then one ep was in English and it sounded horrible after so many in Japanese. And the manga in English used Chinese names for things where the anime used the Japanese pronunciation, and it was confusing. So then I decided to learn Japanese (as you do >.>).

Yuugi was a bit brutal in places, and now the anime is pretty old really. But I really still have a super soft spot for it. It depends on how you feel about characters you like dying.

Bungo stray dogs
Kamisama kiss. I think the last volume was released recently.

Normally I read them off mangahere but some are so badly translated..I don't get what's happening. I don't have room for actual books.

Sefuru sounds so much better than Sefle. Sometimes translators make the strangest decisions when it comes to names. Maybe there's a reason for it and I shouldn't complain, but I've been confused by a few before, as well (mostly in anime). In Gundam SEED, for instance, a character's name is given as Tolle, but my sister and I are pretty sure it should have just been transliterated as Tohru. Most of the characters in that series have pretty hilarious made-up non-Japanese names, though (Kuzzy Buskirk, Dearka, and Yzak come to mind), so the translators probably were just following suit.

So I began watching the anime on youtube. And then one ep was in English and it sounded horrible after so many in Japanese. That brings back memories! The character I remember most from that series (besides the leads) was the one who said "no da" at the end of every sentence  And I think he popped out of a hat. He was my favorite. I have strange favorites. XD

Cool, so you're heading to Japan?

The Cardcaptor Sakura anime is one of my all-time favorites (in the original Japanese! one old English dub butchers the series; the other one is newer and I've never listened to it). My sister and I watched it in our "formative anime years" and are constantly quoting it. Zettai daijobu dayo! I should read the manga, too. I think my sister has volume 1 that I could steal.

Noragami but its on hiatus. I really hope it gets finished.
Bungo stray dogs
I loved Noragami and am in the middle of Bungo Stray Dogs. I like the mix of humor and action.

Chichiri :D He became my favourite ultimately, too. I still have so much love for Yuugi, its so nostalgic <3

I don't know about Gundam; I tend to think anime should be banned from attempting to use westernised made up names because they end up being written in katakana and that means trying to work out what they SHOULD say as opposed to what they DO say is impossible. Kyou Kara Maou is the ultimate example of this, with some really odd Germanic names that get totally torn up in Japanese script.

I haven't read Gravitation in years...

The only BL manga I read now is Sekaiichi Hatsukoi just because a friend got me watching the anime for that and Junjou and it was so funny I got hooked. THe manga is more hardcore but I like it anyway. I met Ritsu's Japanese voice artist this summer in London, which was very surreal but cool...

I miss reading Bleach manga but it really died a death at the end.

I wanted Haruka 5 manga but it kinda disappeared in favour of Haruka 6 manga :/ I would still recommend Harukanaru toki no naka de 1 (Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time) manga because Yorihisa and Yasuaki are <3.

Aw, man, Gravitation! That was one of two 'starter' yaoi titles that most people in my time got in on. The other was Sanami Matoh's FAKE, the one I got into XD I tried Gravitation, got the first two volumes but I honestly couldn't get into it because of the characters.

Junjou Romantica is a classic I simply haven't read, I probably should. I love World's Greatest First Love by the same manga-ka, weirdly

EDIT: Sorry Taffeta, didn't realise you were also talking about that title  ^^; I really got into that title since, well, I sympathised with the tight deadlines parts and nods towards manga publishing as at the time I was working in a comic shop soliciting online titles for the company website. I am waiting on Vol.7 but manga titles are suddenly having weird releases in the UK, it's damn annoying

I love the anime for both though I think the start of Junjou kind of waves a big flag in your face THIS IS YAOI! The problem with Sekaiichi is that half of it is in manga and half of it is in novel form as far as I can tell. I tried QQ Sweeper over vacation, but I'm not warming up to it, which is a disappointment. It's by the author of my favorite manga (Dengeki Daisy), so I really wanted to like it. It's about a guy who cleans up monsters/spirits (not sure which as the manga hasn't specified quite what they are); he meets the protagonist girl and, much to his surprise, he finds she can see the "door" to the "otherworld," unlike normal humans. (rough summary, but that's the gist of it) It's slow but could get more interesting; I'm only mostly through volume 1.

The bookstore finally got Honey So Sweet volume 2 in so I bought volume 1 and 2 today.

Awesome! I hope you liked it :) I feel like it strikes a good balance between sweet and realistic, and the artwork is lovely.

I've never read the Detective Conan manga, but my sister has; I have watched pretty much every Detective Conan anime episode Westerners can get their hands on. It's my sister's favorite series and so we often get her foreign DVDs of the series as gifts. There are so crazy many!  Close to 800 episodes at this point, I think. I want Conan to finally get big again and end up with Ran and to finally find out who the Black Org boss is! It's been, like, 20 years, lol . . .

I'm terrible, I just go with the manga version, I barely watch any anime ... eventhough I probably should, considering how YOI is taking over the world >_> I've seen Ai No Kusabi and Loveless' anime versions, but not much else. SuBLime keep getting questions about translating and releasing it but it's been a no for a while ... actually, the Twitter has been real snippy lately, rather worried about them. Jennifer that comments on the boards on the site is always nice, don't know if it's someone else on the Twitter but the replies come across as snarky and bad-mooded <_>

I don't know about translations, for me it's more Previews release date vs. when it actually arrives in the UK to my local comic shop. I usually purchase from Wordery when the price goes down enough, but they have a bad habit of listing titles with 6-12 days before dispatch, when I know they probably don't have it in stock. (Compared to if they say dispatch is between 3-5 days, better chance it's in stock to-hand). Most of the time, the Previews release date is about the same for the UK as US, but lately it comes in a week or two later and it's annoying

Still waiting for Awkward Silence Vol.6 ... I love my sugary boys so much ;^; Curious when the next Crimson Spell is coming out, I'm going to get my friend hooked on that one.

The last one I've read were the latest chapters of Golden Kamuy. Really good so far!
I guess I also try to keep up with the latest Berserk chapters.

There's actually so much more other titles I plan to read or continue but I either keep forgetting or I am too lazy to start or resume, or I just don't have the time!  :freak:

And I've only reached the 1st few chapters(where nothing has happened yet) so I don't have an opinion on it yet, but I've heard good reviews on I Am A Hero, which apparently, will have zombies in it.

There's also School Live! which is a zombie survival manga I actually have read til the later chapters, but while it had a few interesting bits, I honestly found it pretty boring overall and I don't care for the art style so I don't plan to continue catching up with the series. That's just my personal opinion though. If you like zombie survival stories you can still check it out you might still enjoy it (unlike me).

Oh yeah I forgot, there's also Devilman. No zombies but it does have the apocalyptic themes and is a horror classic.

Parasyte is another horror classic I recommend.

I was rereading D gray-man, but I have stopped reading at the moment due to having to tracking down missing volumes. Once I track down the missing volumes I will continue reading it. I am also working my way through The Full Metal Alchemist manga.

How does everyone storing their manga? At the moment I keep mine in special DVD storage boxes for the most precious ones, and large DVD moving storage boxes for all the rest. They're nice and snug inside, even holds the over-large Juné volumes! But once I finally get a bookcase for my manga ... I had the DVD tower from IKEA but I found it a) too tall! I'm only 5'2! and b) the chambers far too narrow. Manga were either packed a slight too loose or REALLY tightly which had me worried about damaging edges taking them in/out.

I am trying to find a bookcase that has glass doors so I can admire the collection (I know, I'm weird over a bunch of £6-£10 books -_-) and keep out dust, but doesn't have huge gaps at the top and front, and doesn't have pegs holding the shelf in place that could press into the back/front of bookending manga.

Storybelle's top five manga!

1. Sailor Moon. I read this series literally every day. There are very few days where I don't pick up a volume to read a few pages of it.

2.Sakura Hime Kaden

3. Fruits Basket

4. High School of the Dead

5. Vampire Knight.

Right now though, I'm reading another Arina Tanemura series Idol Dreams. I'm not reading much ongoing manga series rn, to be honest. I buy random volumes at comic con and then don't like them enough to pick up the second.

I just have mine on a cheap white bookcase. It's about five 1/2 feet tall and three feet wide, and the way I have the shelves arranged they fit pretty nicely. I love lining up my manga in order and looking at them, ha ha. It's a very satisfying feeling. Missing a volume in the middle triggers me a little, though.

Mine are inside A5 document containers, in my bookcase, so the pages don't spread and warp. I just bought some more yesterday. Daiso used to have them, but they stopped selling them, so now I get them from a cheap shop down at the Gold Coast that I only get near about once a year or so. Almost double the price, but they're better than putting them in the A4 ones and having them stick out from the shelves and only half the spines on display.

Right now I'm not reading any manga regularly, but I have been looking for something new to start, so stalking this thread for popular stuff.

Lady Frostbite, I have mine on huge bookshelves and spread throughout various places of my room. My collection needs organized.

I have two series I am gonna start soon. Kiss Him Not Me, and Fluffy Cinnamaroll (I love cute, children's manga).

I am reading Everybody's Getting Married and this one is not really clicking with me.

Interesting, I'll have to keep looking ...

So, it's come to my attention that Juné Manga is moving to direct-selling only. I am SO angry at this! I don't import manga as I can't afford it, and usually I can get them from UK sellers. But with this? I might just have to drop all Juné titles! They said they're looking into making it cheaper for international customers, I'll believe it when I see it. Plus, we in the UK have customs to deal with if we order too much (my last Juné order cost me £20 in fees for one box set!)

My husband and I own a LOT of manga...  it's in storage at the moment but we actively bought from 2008-2011, plus there was stuff from before we met each other.

According to this spreadsheet I made, there's ~430 unique titles, about half of which are complete sets.  I am not even sure HOW MANY books that actually is, or how many books it would be if all the series were complete!

But we haven't been active in the consumption of animated Japanese culture in ohhhhh about 5 years now.  Sometimes we watch an episode or two of anime, but it's difficult to read subtitles for hours and we don't speak well enough to survive without it.

We do sort of want to get back into it... but it seems like we are SO FAR behind already!  *shrug*  So eventually we will probably just dive in again, but I think it's more probable that we create a manga ourselves...

I finished reading it before I came back to London, so maybe it's cheating, but Saiyuki Reload Blast #3. The manga for the most patient people on the planet. But I am made happy by the very faithful anime adaptation that I've also now been able to finally watch. If only they had gone back and animated Even a Worm. Then I'd be truly content. Sigh. Saiyuki's been going on so long that I have to wonder whether the scene where the characters get scolded for taking too long on their journey is a nod to the fact it's been a 20 year journey across China to India so far ;)

I have absolutely no idea how to explain Saiyuki. No explanation is possible :/

This comment made me sad because it's not the case at all.

The initial meeting between Nuriko and the others is not the best. I don't think any of them come over too well in the early scenes, because Nuriko is not behaving like Nuriko really is, and she's winding up Tama and Miaka, and ultimately it ends up in a big tactless reveal disaster. BUT the important thing is that the others accept Nuriko for who she is. And actually, part of the story itself is really Nuriko discovering who she is. I use she, but I am never totally sure that's correct, because I don't really feel that Nuriko is transgender - maybe gender fluid is more accurate. It's a bit complicated. But ultimately I think it's Miaka who says something like, whether a man or a woman, Nuriko is Nuriko.

The characters all pick on each other to a degree over the course of the story. But I think you're jumping to conclusions about how they treat Nuriko. I think she's the glue that binds them all together at points in the story. And it's definitely true that Tama, Miaka and Tasuki get picked on by the other characters much more than Nuriko does (and by Nuriko). But most of that is in good humour. Tamahome and Tasuki have an ongoing thing between them of adolescent male one-upmanship, for example, and Nuriko and Tasuki have ongoing banter about Tasuki's lack of delicacy.

Yuugi is mostly about not jumping to conclusions and judging on appearances, because often there's a lot more going on underneath. Most of the characters in Yuugi have more going on than the surface and the novels especially help expose that even more.

In any case, I can think of a lot of reasons why people might not like Yuugi, and if you don't like it then you don't. But I wanted to set the record straight, because Nuriko is so much beloved by them all...

I also hate the English manga because it changes all the names from their original Japanese pronunciation into more correct Chinese pronunciation. The mangaka did ask for that to happen, I believe, but it's still really disconnecting. I saw the Yuugi anime in part before I read the manga, and I couldn't get on with the English manga so I stopped reading it till my Japanese was good enough to read in Japanese. Yuugi was the reason I learned Japanese, because I wanted to read the novels (which are awesome but only translated into German -.-).

Im currently on  book 4 of Yu-Gi-Oh! Its kinda great, sooo different from the TV series at least from what I saw on TV and what Ive been reading so far. The TV series seems to be all about cards while the mangas are more about different games. Well, I didnt watch many episodes, so it might change over time. And I have to say I enjoy "Jonouchi" way more than "Joey" :P

I looked through the manga section of Barnes and Noble today to see if anything really caught my eye but there are so many series it's a little overwhelming for me to try to figure out what a good next series would be for me.

I did look at a few but left with no new manga.  The ones I looked at today or am considering picking up.

My Love Story

Codename Sailor V

Sailor Moon 6

In This Corner of the World

I really enjoyed the anime of Your Name and heard there is a manga series also.

I read a few pages of In This Corner of the World but it seemed a little confusing? I saw the anime recently and I thought the monster at the very beginning (when she's in the big city)  was only in Suzu's imagation but it seemed like the monster was real in the manga or maybe I didn't read far enough to find out.

I'm always in the process of rereading Fullmetal Alchemist, I adore it so much (side note, the manga is way better than the second anime adaptation Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, but the first anime adaptation, commonly called fma 03, split off pretty early in the story as it was made before the manga finished and in my opinion easily stands on its own as an anime if you dont compare it to the 'source material')
I'm also reading Legend of Arslan, and I've been looking around for physical copies of Junji Ito's work as I've only ever read legally-grey digital versions and I want to support the author. Uzumaki in particular is one I'd love to have in hardback on my shelf.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY  It was published by Studio Ironcat in 2000 so I am pleasantly excited to have found it.

My Love Story

Codename Sailor V

Sailor Moon 6

In This Corner of the World
I've been meaning to watch In This Corner of the World; I got the DVD as a gift and it looks really good. I haven't read the manga you mentioned (including Twinkle Star), but I've seen some of their animes. I've seen most of Sailor Moon and I can say that my sister really likes it; I don't personally like Serena/Usagi's personality, so that pretty much ruins the series for me, lol. Her friends -- Rei and Makoto esp. for me -- are likeable, though, and the series is a classic. To be fair, I watched the English dub for the most part, and they changed the storyline in some ways, so the manga might be better than I think.

The anime of My Love Story was cute and funny; interestingly, although the manga is technically about Takeo's love story with Yamato, in some ways it's more of a slice-of-life manga and focuses very much on his platonic male relationship with his best friend Sunakawa. The anime was a little slow, but the manga is probably worth a try. It's written (though not drawn) by one of my favorite mangaka, Kazune Kawahara.

Speaking of which, she writes a series I can recommend: High School Debut. It's a romantic comedy about a tomboy who is so clueless about trying to get a boyfriend that she ends up enlisting the help of a girl-hating bishounen who becomes her dating coach. It's really funny and often sweet, although the plot loses some steam as the series goes on.

Another recommendation is a newer, ongoing manga, Takane & Hana. This one's hard to describe but I love it. Hana goes to an arranged marriage meeting in place of her older sister and meets the prospective husband -- a rich, handsome, apparently stuck-up heir to a company. Of course, since this is a manga, the marriage meeting ends in a terrific disaster, but to Hana's surprise the dude takes an interest in her and starts to date her for real, or try to. Most of the humor in this series comes from her mercilessly teasing him and it's hilarious. XD

Guess what, today I found a manga at the thrift store.  LONG out of print.... HyperDolls Vol 1 by Shimpei Itoh!
Awesome, manga at a thrift store! What's Hyper Dolls about? A quick Google search tells me the main characters are alien androids? (par for the course for manga, ha ha!)

Furuba isn't really a complete story in the anime. I love the anime too, but the manga completes the whole story so :/

I didn't know there was more stuff going on with that series. Interesting to know :D Although I am not sure how it would work, given that...(major plot spoiler)

I definitely recommend the manga! I've never gotten round to watching the anime (been meaning to for ages - I did watch a couple of eps but couldn't quite get into it, but I would like to get back to it one day..) but from what I've heard, the anime ended halfway through the manga's story? The manga has a really nice ending. It's kinda long, but not hundreds of volumes long or anything. I'd definitely recommend it ^_^

It looks like my bookstore has restocked most of the manga I was interested in but I will have to wait a while before I can get new books. :)

I've been reading the Kodansha Comics English version of Sailor Moon. I just finished volume 8. I know they are releasing Sailor Moon Eternal edition soon but since I've bought most of my Sailor Moon manga within the past couple of years I don't want to spend money on a new edition just yet. Is anyone planning on picking up the new version?

Thanks for the link to the comparison pic banditpony. :) I like the size of the current edition books. I do wonder if the Sailor Moon Eternal Edition will have more Acts in each volume or if they will just put more pages of full color art in the book.  It looks like the English translation has been revised a little also but again I’m used to the current English version. :)

I’ll probably skip Sailor Moon Eternal unless I can’t get the current versions if the last few volumes.

I didn’t know Sailor Moon had artbooks. :) I love the full color pages in the manga. It’s so pretty. I’m not sure if my bookstore will even carry Sailor Moon Eternal. They have a pretty big manga section but don’t carry a lot of copies of each volume in the different series.

Someone posted a lot of pics of the new Sailor Moon Eternal book on Amazon. From those pics I was able to compare it to the regular English edition of the manga. 😀 There are 7 Acts in each volume instead of the usual 6. The translation is slightly different but not much. I don’t see the point of buying Sailor Moon Eternal just for a few different words and different full color artwork.

Manga is a bit too cheap here, so mountains of second hand purchased manga have started piling up. I SHOULD read all these mangas I have hoarded in the last four years, and I could start maybe with Tactics or Chobits. I think there were some other interesting ones in this book ocean of mine.
But instead I decided I could reread Black Butler! Not like this. Got stuck with it though since I 'm missing the 11th and 15th volumes and I'd like to read only physical copies this time. That, and due to poor lighting it's hard to find comfortable sitting positions in my room.

I have the opposite problem in that getting hold of manga that I want here is sometimes tricky. I only read it in Japanese these days anyway, but that's actually a good thing because it means I conserve space and only ever buy the series I'm really intent on. I have some older manga that I got before I learned Japanese. I think I have all of Fruits Basket but across 3 languages (English, French and Japanese) which is destabilising xD.

The only ones I can really get to these days though are Haruka, Fushigi Yuugi and Saiyuuki. I have to go digging for the others...

Now when it comes to series I'd actualy like to read and get a hold of like Tactics and Dogs: Bullets and Carnage / Stray Dogs Howling in the Dark and those few missing Black Butler volumes?? I can't find them. Then again the two first are veery obscure...
Also if you only read japanese manga you have a lot wider amount of manga to read! I'd love to read manga adaptions of some video games I like, but what are offical or fan translations, sigh.
Also I know some japanese webstores with wide selection if I can help?
Title: Re: What manga are you reading?
Post by: Taffeta on November 25, 2018, 12:25:18 AM
Thanks xD but it's not really about finding them, it's the mixture of space and expenditure. I tend to only buy series that I have a strong attachment to for that reason. I've bought in bulk second hand online before but the shipping is costly even if the books aren't overall. So you might pay 500 yen for 15 volumes but then get stung on postage xD.

For new stuff there's always places like play asia, cdjapan, amazon etc. When I was in Japan I also saw whole sets of manga being sold cheap in second hand stores like bookoff which also sell online - but I knew I couldn't get them into the case to take home :( I brought second hand DVDs of retired anime back with me but no manga :/

There;s quite a lot of manga in English here but I am not really a fan of translated manga. There have been series for which I've preferred the anime because even though anime often abridges thing, frequently the dialogue is closer to the original in the Japanese version than any translated version, at least in English. Dunno about other languages but in English there's also a trend to westernise terms or name order and you lose the nuances. Having also spent some time on a forum retranslating scenes from a series for a fandom because the only online scanlators played loose and fast with the original, made mistakes and inserted swear words and colloquialisms instead of actually rendering it properly, I lost faith in online translations. This one community I'm talking about, they'd translate in a hurry from a Chinese translation of a Japanese original and stuff got muddled. There's still one key aspect of that manga that fans are hugely divided on because the actual canon says it one way, and fan translation says it another. I'm a detail geek so I like to know what's actually being said or happening...and picking up nuances in the language that don't get translated.

Tactics isn't that obscure, is it?

I have a few games that go with franchises. I also like the live seiyuu events because they have such twisted senses of humour and they're so funny with how they spoof up their characters in hugely unlikely scenarios. I think sometimes that makes me more connected to a franchise than just the manga on its own. I feel like a lot of stuff doesn't get translated outside of Japan, which is a real shame.

Ahh understandable.

Definetly. And yes, my visit to Japan was quite quick but I bought in like new condition for around 1500 yen some three volume manga from the 90s, it's definetly not that valuable there.
That's so sad though!

Ahh I see. I see indeed.
And yes. It's especialy present on childrens series, names get changed to total nonsense.
Oh my. That's why offical translations most of the time are better. Then there are the rare opposites though: one old old anime I like has better fansubs than offical subs. The offical subtitles even mess up character names.
Yeah understandable.

I myself have never heard anyone know it? But who knows.

Oo that sounds awesome!
Understandable. No matter what translated manga will always be only a fraction of what exists.
Title: Re: What manga are you reading?
Post by: Taffeta on November 25, 2018, 10:50:40 AM
I admit I don't see or hear much talk about Tactics these days though back when the anime series came out it was a bit more talked about I think. I have never looked at the manga, somewhere I have the anime on DVD for some reason though I don't think I actually ever got around to watching it. For me a really obscure manga is one that never got picked up for translation, like Sotsugyou M (which kind of had a whole seiyuu doing live concerts thing, plus novels, etc, but nothing ever got translated into English. The animated special is on youtube but is only about 0.1% close to the actual overall storyline or characters.

I think this is a problem particularly with older anime/manga that predate internet mass uploading or scanning or whatever. Even ones from the dialup internet period (like SotsuM). Now it's much easier for many series to be translated online and there's a wider understanding that there's a global interest which maybe wasn't always there before?

And then there's series like the Haruka one I mentioned before - the manga was released in English, the anime main series was also released in the US on DVD with horrible subtitles that make a mess of the names and the cultural aspects of Heian Japan. But the thing is Haruka is a six game franchise now spanning almost 20 years of production and six different settings. Although there are animated OVA for 2 and 3 (both on youtube except the last part of 3) they've never had the full release outside of Japan. There's no manga except random chapters also not released outside of Japan. Haruka 4 has no animation and only brief chapters of manga, not translated. It will also never have an anime now because the voice artist for the central female character has passed away. Haruka 5 had manga for two or three volumes then got dropped which I still feel is a shame, also didn't get translated. Haruka 6 has manga at the moment - as far as I know, no translation. Both Haruka 1 and Haruka 5 have live stage shows as well and they have regular annual seiyuu events. None of this is available in English or even with subs. And the games of course are only available in Japanese. The most successful Haruka games seem to be 1 and 3 as they keep reformatting, rereleasing and upgrading them - but nothing from 3 has ever been released in English. So to most people outside of Japan, Haruka is a 26 episode anime series and a 17 volume manga series and that is all. I don't even think they released the movie in English or with English subs.

So what is a pretty successful and popular Japanese franchise spanning almost 2 decades...is not really that well known in other places. Whereas other series are picked up and the foreign language market is flooded with them. I tend to have a rule that if I've seen a manga or anime in a shop in the UK, it's mainstream xD If not, it's not...

But I can't remember with Tactics because I never looked for the manga.

Honestly the Tactics anime is terrible, one of the worst I've seen, I'm just extremely curious is the manga better. I have the two first volumes so I should read them.

Hmm then can we settle with there being three levels of obscure? The forgotten ones, the ones that never were popular, and the ones that never made it over the ocean.
Ah I see! A basic case of a series that is well known in it's own country but nowhere else. One old old anime I like, Shinzo Ningen Casshan, was apparently quite popular in Japan still in the 70s and in general Tatsunokos animes were apparently big back in the day. But in US very few of Tatsunokos series are known even somewhat, as most never got localized. I'm honestly surprised there's even a (terribly) subbed DVD box of the original Casshan. (This is the offical sub that even messes up character names!!!)
Though Shinzo Ningen Casshan was apparently dubbed in south European countries like Italy and maybe Spain so it is atleast poorly known there.

I agree, anime/manga that goes beyond 1985 is nearly impossible to find online and even some newer series have managed to slip trough the cracks into obscurity.

Very interesting to read, very interesting!!! It's always interesting to hear about these more forgotten series release stories.

I wouldn't classify all translated manga mainstream, especialy some older ones. I'm not home as I'm typing this, so I can't try to find some examples from my manga ocean.
For example though, here we get some one shot mangas translated and released, and like two months after release they fade back into the unknown, never to be talked about again.
There also also cases of the opposite: Zetsuai is one of the most known older series of the yaoi genre, even in the west. The manga never was translated to english, but to other languages like spanish and german yes. The anime only has a fansub, yet the series is far from unknown.

So this is kind of not anime or manga but it relates to me more to manga so I'm going to put it here.

Bleach is literally the only really mainstream manga I have ever followed for an extended period of time. Although it has a fair amount of fighting and stuff (being a shounen manga), there are a lot of cool cultural aspects shoved into it (like reference to the shinsengumi, etc) and some great characters and character relationships. So I've always been fond of it, going back quite some time.

I remember a while back talk about a live action Bleach movie. I just randomly found it on Netflix so decided to watch it for kicks. It actually wasn't as cringey as I thought it would be, but I have big issues with two things...
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

But weirdly, I found myself less repulsed by a weird live action version of a manga series with some clear deviations from the original plot structure than I do by the last arc of the manga.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
It just makes me wish over again that the manga had ended at the Fullbringer arc. I mean, that was at times ridiculous, but at least there was still some semblance of plot and character involved...but as it is, watching a shady live action movie is as close as I get to watching or reading Bleach these days. All because the taint of the last arc is still hanging over it...

Maybe one day the writer will write a final chapter in which it turns out that the last arc was all just Ishida's dream...

I don’t read Bleach and haven’t watched the live action movie on Netflix but I know what you mean about movies messing with a character’s moral compass. My absolute favorite musical is Les Miserables and I was dissapointed in the 1998 movie. I was so excited for the musical movie version when it came out in 2012. It’s kind of a combination of the book and the musical meaning some points followed the book and others the musical. There is one scene (can’t say too much because it’s a major spoiler) where the movie followed the book instead of the musical making one of the major characters look like he didn’t care that other characters’ lives were at risk.

I can’t read Japanese so I read translated manga but I know that there might be translation errors or other issues with the translated versions.

I can’t read Japanese so I read translated manga but I know that there might be translation errors or other issues with the translated versions.

All my negative experiences of translated manga admittedly come from scanlations rather than official translations, and particularly in the Bleach fandom, where things were really done messily. I am aware of this perhaps more because I did a lot of retranslating for a forum there more than I have done with any other - Bleach being a mainstream popular manga and on a weekly schedule meant everything was done with a rush and there were lots of people clamouring for it so people didn't take time to correct their errors.

My issue with Bleach in English in terms of the official is not so much the translation but the lack of awareness of cultural paradigms. This in the anime too, but the chief example I use is a character called Ishida Uryuu, who in both manga and anime in Japanese hates being called by his given name (Uryuu) and gets quite snarky at people who call him that because they don't know him well enough to be that familiar. Yet in the English he's "Uryuu" from the start and that just tramples over his character before he's had a chance to state it. Just because in the west it's normal to use first names doesn't make it acceptable to change the whole nature of a character in order to force western norms on the story. He could have stayed Ishida, but they didn't do that. So I guess my issue with officially translated manga is they westernise things too much and thus sweep over cultural nuances. There's less unnecessary swearing or reckless or bad translating, but it's not necessarily accurate to the original and I'm a detail geek.

I also hated that Fushigi Yuugi in English uses the Chinese readings of all the names. I understand why they do, as it's set in Ancient China so that makes sense. But I hate it. Especially since their stellar names are still Japanese, but the character names and place names are suddenly entirely unrelatable to the original :/ The same happened with Saiunkoku for the same reason. Although in that case I think the original author actually wanted that to happen in translation so *shrug*.

The official translations sometimes have mistakes also. The Kodansha translation of Sailor Moon before the Eternal edition was released has a pretty famous error where they mistranslated Jupiter's attack "Sparkling Wide Pressure" as "Spark Ring Pressure" and even when they became aware of the error they made no effort to fix it in the version that's been in print since 2012.

I think keeping that characteristic in Bleach would have added another layer to the character. I've noticed in Honey So Sweet and Your name translated versions they keep the nuances of the honorifics. In one scene in Your Name Mitsuha  in Taki's body is scolded by another member of the wait staff for using san instead of senpai when addressing Miss Okedera. In Honey So Sweet the characters don't refer to each other by their first name unless they are close or have permission to do so. :)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure even in the English version of Fruits Basket (And it's a long time since I read it) Touru's friends are still referred to by their nicknames as in the Japanese, even though their actual first names are Arisa and Saki if I remember rightly. I may be wrong but I think they're still Uo and Hana..?

So it is really a twitch I inherited from Bleach, but yeah. It happens.

Dunno about the more recent translation, but the old Tokyopop translation definitely has them as Uo-chan and Hana-chan. IIRC they were really good about leaving the honorifics in that series.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I read Furuba a really long time ago so I actually have a weird mix of volumes (some in English, a few in French, and a few in Japanese, LOL) because when I started reading Furuba I think it was either when I started learning Japanese or right before it. And I picked up the French ones in Belgium because the French translation was ahead of the English back then...which tells you how long ago it was as it was still being translated O.o. And I was pretty sure they were still Hana and Uo, not Saki and Arisa.

I don't buy manga often but I just bought a few volumes of Akatsuki no Yona from amazon.jp. Because I basically watched the whole anime in about 2 days when I really should have been doing something else. And cliffhangers are annoying when there's no season 2. But it has some interesting characters and there's some multidimensional things going on which I want to know the answers to. Which I guess is the basic point of the anime, to be a glorified advert to lure people in to reading the manga.

Sigh.

I have no space for manga but whatever. It;s worse when it's a long series too. This one is 28 and counting so I thought I'd buy a few volumes and see if I like reading it as I'm probably not going to save much on bulk buying it when it's still going and the shipping would kill me with current exchange rates :/

I try to avoid really long series if I can, albeit not always successfully.

Inuyasha's one of those which I watched the anime for years back and Final Act when it came out but I steered clear of the manga because it's so LONG. And I just see long manga series and cry blood at the potential shipping cost. I hope you enjoy reading Inuyasha, LBS.

I have to admit that I would enjoy Inuyasha more if Kikyou didn't exist, but anyhow...for me it was worth watching pretty much for Sesshoumaru >.>

Yay Ponyfan :D

So I am now on volume 25 of Akatsuki no Yona (out of 28 currently in print), after deciding to read it only slowly to see if I liked it and ending up buying the whole manga within a short space of time. Sigh. If not for Christmas, New Year and my thesis, I'd probably have read the whole thing by now. Well, at least I can recommend it...?

One reason I buy so little manga - it's so expensive to import from Japan :/

I also like actual books. For my research too, I like hard copy. I am a dinosaur among my students who do their reading on their phones, sometimes -.-

I am waiting for vol 29 of Yona to get a release date, which completely steamrollered me as a series, sigh. And vol 4 of Saiyuuki Reload Blast which could take literally years. Saiyuuki's been going 20 years already (in the story I think their journey's been like, 2 or 3 years, but we've been waiting a whole lot longer). I don't even know if Blast's been picked up by a translator yet or what though the anime adaption was pretty accurate (with added flashback stuff). But since the manga thus far kind of ended
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
it feels like the cliffhangers mount up and then take YEARS to be figured out.

If only Even a Worm had been properly animated. Sob. It's the one bit of the Saiyuuki franchise still effectively missing.

Although manga is usually better than anime, anime is sometimes easier to get hold of :/

Me too. I find it a lot easier to look up something in a book then on a tiny phone screen. I had to buy a new phone in China and it's such a pain to type on because if I hit the wrong button-which I frequently do - it switches everything into Chinese characters and then I spend the next 5 minutes trying to switch it back.  :pout:
And EVERYTHING is done via cell phone here. Ordering food, paying for groceries, paying for a taxi or DIDI (chinese uber) via Wechat or Alipay. I was surprised at the amount of places in Okinawa that accepted wechat or Alipay.  :|

I'm strictly a print person when it comes to manga; the only digital piece I have is a tiny side-story for Awkward Silence, because the series is so sugar-sweet I just had to have it. Anything else, no. The only other exception I'd make is for FAKE Act 2 by Sanami Matoh, because FAKE is the series I started with ... And buying it off Amazon for Kindle directly benefits her! Once it's translated to English, of course XD

For comics, I'm 50/50. I prefer print, but I do own Comixology and have the digital versions of some of my favourite series as the print used to be VERY hard to get before they started directly selling from their own store (Amigo Comics). I now own both in order to support a dearly-beloved series (Rogues!)

Is that because of digitisation or did a license go bust somewhere? I remember that there was some big issue with releasing anime of Kyou Kara Maou and Saiunkoku in the US because of a collapsed company and licence somewhere, hopefully this isn't the same deal??

It's not quite reading manga, but I have the drama cds for the Even a Worm arc for Saiyuuki manga here on my ipod. I'm reminding myself just how badly they wrecked the arc in the Gunlock anime.

Really hope to see Hazel again in the manga, even it it makes anime creator brains hurt. With Furuba getting a remake, I still hold out hope one day Gunlock will be replaced with a proper Even A Worm animated arc.

I think it's doubtful since they already skipped over it to do the next arc. Though this arc refers back to events in EAW, it's still like water under a bridge. But Saiyuuki has been going on and off for 20 years and has had on and off anime in that time, so I live in hope.

And yes, Funimation already has a placeholder :D exciting times.

At first I thought maybe the book I bought was flawed but then I noticed a reviewer on Amazon said that their Volume 9 was also missing the mini jacket. I even checked the book covers to see if someone had torn away the mini jacket but it looks like this edition just wasn't made with mini jacket. It seems a little strange for 1 volume out of the series to not have it.

I picked up Volumes 7 and * of the Fruits Basket omnibus editions today. :)

YAY my volume # 5 of Juline arrived!  almost have all of this series from my FAVORITE mangaka!

Congrats :cheer:

Ponyfan

Is * an actual volume or did you just hit the shift key when hitting the 8? :)

I still need to go buy Yona #29. I just don't want to pay shipping from Japan for just one book...*sobs*.

Currently re-reading Uraboku (aka Uragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitteiru...there's a reason everyone just calls it 'Uraboku' ahaha) from the beginning <3 I can't actually count how many times I've read it by now, to be honest. This series is so good and seriously underrated. Also re-reading No. 6 from the beginning, as well. I need to re-read the novel again too.

Aside from that, I'm keeping up with the translations of the Mo Dao Zu Shi manhua!

I still need to buy the last couple of volumes of Uraboku actually. I could do that :) The problem I have with Uraboku is that Hotsuma is my favourite character so the moment main attention slips onto the third set of zweilt I kind of lose interest and get distracted xD. Though I do like Tsukumo.

@Ponyfan - it is, so when you're paying say $5 for a book and then $20 for the shipping, it makes more sense to try and get your money's worth. The problem then though is the custom threshold as they do charge custom fees for that too. But they don't stock Yona in the Japanese book shop in London. I've checked :( They used to stock Haruka, which was lucky, but not Yona.

Still waiting to see if Haruka 6 makes it to anime. Albeit I still need to read all of Haruka 6's manga, I just have kind of lost the first four volumes at home somewhere so volumes 5 and 6 are folornly sitting with my Yona ones waiting...

Yona!!! <3

I finally ordered Vol 29 of that from Amazon.jp. But I am still so desperate for them to animate beyond vol 8 because Zeno barely has a chance to appear and there's SO MUCH going on with that character it's a waste not to see any of it in motion. Sure, he has an OVA, but even so...

I still can't decide which character in Yona is my favourite, either. After 27 (still haven't read 28) volumes I keep switching depending on scenes. They're really well crafted characters albeit I am really worried something horribly tragic is going to end this series, given the way it began...

@Ponyfan, tempted to rewatch Yona after this discussion :) Although I am waiting for vol 29 to arrive first and finally I'll catch up with the story. Given the extremes this story often goes to, I do tend to worry a bit with each volume what might happen to them next XD. IMO the writer does a great way of developing characters in ways you don't expect.

Edit to add: Vol 29 arrived :D Now I just have to find 28 so I can catch up...and try to remember what happened last...

Have a feeling it was something to do with Jaeha...

I am on like, volume 6, 7 of Red River at the moment.... but I have so little time to enjoy manga.
Uh in non-related manga, I did find my kid both of the hardcover Sailor Moon English storybooks they made back in the 90's DIC release at Value Village, paid like $1.49 a book.... wow

I saw manga in a charity shop here for the first time ever today (bear in mind the UK caught on to manga a bit slower than the US in general and where my parents live is about as backwards in catching on to anything as you can imagine for a place that actually has roads...)

I hadn't heard of any of the series (and I don't read English manga anyway) but it was kind of nice because they'd banded volumes together in sets so that you didn't get someone coming in and buying all the first volumes xD.

I think it’s great that the charity shop bundled the volumes today. I get annoyed when I’m wanting to start a new series and all of the volumes are there except volume 1.

I found a new/used bookstore here that sells manga but the last time I went there I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the used books. I don’t expect used books to be absolutely perfect but I don’t want stained/damaged books either.

I seem to have run out of shelf space for my manga so I will have to find a place to put new books until I get more shelf space.

Unfortunately now I've read a bunch of stuff that is going to be hilarious animated with the seiyuu voicing the lines, and I am going to have to wait for those anyway.

Not familiar with that one o.O.

I have finally caught up with Yona completely to where it is thus far

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
[/spoiler]

This remains one of the most cleverly written manga series I've read, considering it's going into 30 or so volumes, and could easily have jumped into cliche territory, it hasn't really. It doesn't let up on the plot, the humour, or the character development stuff at any point and it has a great balance between them.

I have so much respect for this mangaka, seriously. I really really hope they do eventually get to making season 2 of anime :/ as we need more animated Zeno.

Yes.
Urusei Yastura was around in the 70s~90s. Lum in particular is very iconic. And in Japan she gets merch all the time.

However what I was referring to was just the manga series. The Japanese original release was 38? books (and did have other incarnations), and the US only got 9. They were released back in the 90s-- before Sailor Moon hit shelves and the US got a wave of manga and VIZ changed their gears to more popular things. (Ranma squeeked by tho because it was newer... )

Ahh I see. So basically you didn't get all the manga you should have because licencing and reasons?

That makes sense.

I'm familiar with Takahashi but more for Inuyasha than anything. I did see the drama series of One Pound Gospel which was bizarrely cute but I don't know how true it is to the manga. I don't think I've ever read any of her work in the actual manga except bits of Inuyasha years ago in English - but I agree that her characters are quite iconic.

Someone at the Japanese event the other week cosplayed as one of the characters from Ranma 1/2.

I hope that the new manga release means you get the whole lot this time.

This is more anime than manga but I remember when one of the anime companies went bust, Season 2 of Saiunkoku Monogatari and 3 of Kyou Kara Maou kind of disappeared into the abyss. I think Saiunkoku eventually got released, I'm not sure about KKM. I saw it in Japanese, I don't know if it had a proper release in the US but I don't think it had one in the UK.

I think the novels from both are still not in English either. I have most of the Saiunkoku ones and the sequel ones but sitting down to read them when I've had to read pages of academic Japanese isn't really on my to do list so I admit if they were in English I might buckle :/ I think I've read to about #9 and there's about 22 or something that go on way beyond the anime and I'm just flicking through them looking at the pictures going...yeah, will read these one day...
Shameful admission is shameful...

They never lost their license.. it was just because VIZ went to focus on more popular things. Like Naruto.

It made sense businesswise.

Ah, yes, me again. Just like anime I've gotten into Manga lately. I do like to have the actual book, however there seem to be a lot that probably never get translated into engish, as I've looked at a few sites online and see that there are tons I've never seen in stores. So I've been doing some reading with my ipad due to I'll probably never get a chance since they'll probably never been turned into book format or at least not english other than folks doing it online, etc.

The actual book series I'm into right now are as followed. Some I'm caught up, some I'm only starting, etc. but these are series I've bought more than one vol. in so far.
1. Black Butler
2. Takane & Hana
3. The Water Dragons Bride
4. Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
5. kamisama kiss
6. The Demon Prince of Momochi House
7. Yona of the Dawn

Post Merge: August 12, 2019, 02:45:30 AM

I'm thinking about starting Takane & Hana soon.

Ponyfan

YEs...YEsssss...do it and let me know what you think.

I know it's kinda sketchy because of the age difference between the two main characters but it's actually well written and Takane isn't some evil older guy that's just creepy for a younger girl...it's actually pretty adorable that I laugh out loud when reading some of the stuff that happens. Even going so far as to cry over the two characters and at one point I totally wanted to murder Takane's grandfather (LOL). Plus I don't know if 10 years is a completely horrible age difference considering I have an uncle married to someone 12 years younger than him :p and hell a former best friend who married someone with an even bigger age gap.

With Takane and Hana I'd almost consider them the same age in some instances as Takane seems so weirdly innocent and sheltered that the teenager is much cleverer than him in dealing with certain situations.

But I really love this series, I'm caught up right now as I ordered the last copy off amazon and blew threw it as soon as I got it. So now I'm like...dangit come on Vol#11.

Thanks Karentheunicorn .  :) I haven't started Takane & Hana yet but will post my thoughts when I start. I bought volume 10 as soon as it came out too. My bookstore hasn't restocked volume 9 yet. so I am still missing that one.

I love Yona of the Dawn. :) It's one of  my favorite series.

Ponyfan

I'm actually going to reread the whole series of Takane and Hanna again, just cause. I'm all caught up on most of the others I read. Black Butler I've caught up online but I still like to have the books once they come out in english.

I watched the Yona anime online so I'm kinda behind on reading the manga, simply because what I've read so far is sorta a recap of what I've watched. I think I have up to vol. 5 right now but have only read the first 3 at the moment.

Oh, on another question where does everyone read manga online? I've been to a couple of sites but I don't know which are the best and some out there seem free or at least some seem to have a lot of manga that I've never seen in the store so as I said before I'm wondering if it's just some that are probably never going to get printed in english so people are translate them online and posting them? Since I'm kinda new to the whole manga thing I'm confused on what is really up with some of these comics/manga. Some sites I see have a few chapters and, I was reading one that said they had to stop since the manga got licensed? So I'm really confused over the whole manga online stuff and what is legit. Some of the translations seem kinda funny on some I read and make me LOL.

@ Uni - Yona is awesome, and there's some slight reshuffling I think in the early manga to the series but it's pretty close. But as Ponyfan says the anime covers 1-8. I actually only have volumes from 8 onwards for this reason at the moment.

Great! That helps me know where the new stuff begins but I still wanna get them all and reread it but other books distracted me.

I really have enjoyed Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts - as it suggests it's got the beauty and beast vibe.

When I have some money to I intend on getting the first 7 to complete the set because I know there are some omake chapters but for now it's not a priority as the anime exists xD.

I should probably read Hero Academia since a new series is coming out and the students/school is entertaining. I wish I was more enthusiastic about the bad guys, though. I am not interested in any of them, even the revelations about Shigaraki in the end of what has been animated didn't interest me and the main bad guy villain also doesn't interest me.

..Big problem. I kind of wish whenever they appear that they hurry up and go away so we can get back to meaningful plot...and since that is the plot, it's thus far discouraged me.

I find it difficult to read manga out of sequence so read volumes 1-8  after I watched the anime. I'm actually caught up on the English translation (19 volumes)

I'm kinda over the whole high school dynamic in anime/manga. Don't get me wrong, I'll still read something if it's good but I think because I'm in my 40's now I feel like I just wanna see something different. And I think I have to have the combo of fantasy/romance/drama/action for me to like it. If it's just some fighting action...nada...if it's just standard girly superhero with tiny bit of romance...naa. Like I used to like Salor Moon, now I'm kinda meh, over it. I'm still into silly fantasy/love triangle manga drama so shoot me...but hay at some point you figure out you don't care and just wanna see angsty drawings argue, fight, misunderstand each other and then kiss and make out at some point.

AND whats up with these time travel manga where the girl goes back in time...no usually she dies tragically and goes back in time to end up in some tragic girls body of a family who hates her. But then ends up having 3-5 princes from the royal palace fall in love with her...LOL...how come I keep falling prey to this cheesery.

@Uni - with school things it depends on the plot and the characters. I hated school so sometimes it's cathartic to watch others having a nightmare there too xD no, I'm kidding. But some stories I don't really care. Others are just insipid/beyond me and I probably am too old to enjoy them. I dunno.

As I go forward, I have collected a small group of favourites and when I think about it, some of them begin with a school connection but most of them don't stay there.

And Saiyuuki, which is one of my absolute favourites, is full of drinking and smoking, neither of which I do, so that's interesting. Also driving a car that's a dragon. Which I also don't do. Dragons are good though :D

Yona is awesome. The more it goes on the more I'm impressed with her writing, and her art, and the humour that runs through what is often a really brutal story. Right now though it's doing my head in a little bit because

Uni, if you cried at the anime so far, you're gonna probably cry more with the manga. I'm sure Ponyfan will agree with me with certain sections xD.

Furuba's new animation is absolutely lovely. I'm so glad they decided to do it so many years on as it handles every character with so much more sensitivity and care than the original anime. And somehow the moralising ghost of Kyouko doesn't seem quite so obnoxiously there in this version. She seems more human.

Haha xD I dunno, it's not that explicit. But yeah, that's the guy :)

Takane would be Ta as in tap, ka as in cap, ne as in neck. Ta-ka-ne. Japanese is a very staccato language and every syllable is sounded and has basically the same length unless indicated with a macron or double vowel.

The names in Yona are mostly derived from Korean so you get Japanified Korean stuff going on. I write them as the manga does, kind of, but there are other more official spellings for some of them I think. Like some people write Yun as Yun, some as Yoon, and Sinha as Sin-ah, and so on.

I completely agree with Taffeta. :) There are many details and scenes that aren't in the anime in the manga and certain sections will leave a lasting impression. Yona makes my brain spin too. :dizzy:

This is exactly why I had trouble spelling some of the character names at first because different sources have them spelled differently. The English translation  hyphenates most of the 2 syllable names. So Suwon is written as Su-won and Iksu  as Ik-su but Sinha and Jaeha aren't hyphenated.

I love Fruits Basket.  :lovey: I've still only been able to see the 1st episode of the new series since I don't have a Funimation or Crunchy Roll subscription but I really want to see it.

The second. Ne as if you were going to say neck, but not the end ck sound. Sing it around your workplace a bit. See if it brings in new custom. You may have a new jingle! :)

It's a quite nice rhythmic language. There are a lot of words that are satisfying to say because of that :)

Ordered 9 manga as a gift to myself (because I deserve it!  )

Crimson Spell Vol.6
Finder Deluxe Edition Vol.7 (I noticed it was missing on my shelf somehow??)
World's Greatest First Love Vol.12
Go For It, Nakamura! Vol.1
Ten Count Vol.6 (this series ... it seemed to take a  VERY sharp turn from very understandable and great take with OCD to ... uh, skipping juuuuuust a few steps)
Hitorijime My Hero Vol.1
Candy Color Paradox Vol.1
The High School Life of a Fudanshi Vol. 4
Classmates Vol. 1: Dou kyu sei

I still need to get rid of some Don't Be Cruel volumes, series REALLY didn't resonate with me at all

I had to look through the manga in the local bookstore today (my cousin's daughter is all into Japanese stuff at the moment and parents wanted my advice on something she might like, she's eleven, so not the easiest question to answer xD) and I was amazed how much of a range there is now compared to when I first got into anime and stuff 12 years ago. I remember it being pretty hard to buy manga in a book store in the UK then.

It's a different world now O.o.

12 years ago? Tokyopop was in Borders and Waterstones, it wasn't too hard until they folded. And if you have a comic shop or access to Amazon, you were sorted. Got so many titles off Amazon, I looked up my ancient 2005 orders and was hit by wave and wave of nostalgia
Title: Re: What manga are you reading?

Taffeta: totally there is more selection and more genres for newer fans!  We had like 20 options. 25 if you count space mecha titles ;p

Tokyopop only died about 12 years ago: if your bookstores used them, you had a ton of options. Then VIZ is a big publisher though. A bunch did go out of business at the same time.

I wonder if the manga selection varied from area to area? I had difficulty finding manga 12 years ago, too - all I could find was one small section in Waterstone's and it was mostly just stuff like Naruto and Bleach, not much girly stuff or anything like that. But that was in a small town, so maybe bigger towns/cities/whatever had more of a selection??
Title: Re: What manga are you reading?
Post by: lovesbabysquirmy on September 18, 2019, 11:50:44 PM
It was a huge selection in all our bookstores and comic stores. I would say it dwindled after 2012 because of the publishers going out of business. Most of my collection was bought from 2008-2012

In actual personal updates:  found and bought nearly complete sets of Path of the Assassin as well as Lone Wolf and Cub. $35 for them both. They are missing 2 volumes apiece

The Tokyopop thing still bums me out a lot because they were publishing a translation of Koge-Donbo*'s Pavane For a Dead Girl and didn't make it past the first volume before they died. No one else has tried translating it since, no fan translations, nothing.

I really want to know what happens in Pavane For a Dead Girl beyond volume one, but oh well.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've ordered the entirety of the Pita-Ten manga on eBay, so I'll start reading those when they arrive. They're beat up, but according to the seller are still perfectly readable. I've seen its anime before but I guess they made a few large changes when adapting it, so it'll be fun to read it as Koge-Donbo* originally intended the story to be. :)

It's such a shame because Koge-Donbo* is my favorite artist, too. I'm trying to work on getting my hands on all of her works, both her major published stuff as well as her self-published doujinshi works. I mean of course I'll still be buying the remaining Pavane for a Dead Girl volumes in Japanese at some point (I think it'd be fun to own all of the books of hers that did get put out in English in both English and original Japanese... just for collection's sake), but I won't be able to read them. I can't imagine holding my phone with the Google Translate app up to the books would get me very far....

I also read the English translations of manga since I can’t read Japanese.  Right now my favorite manga series that’s still ongoing is Yona of the Dawn. It’s been hard to wait patiently for the next volume to be released in English since the last volume ended on a cliffhanger.  The English translation is several years behind the Japanese so it’s hard sometimes not to run in to spoilers.

I have all the volumes of Takane and Hana but have yet to read them.

Absolutely no word of a lie, I started learning Japanese because I wanted to read the Fushigi Yuugi gaiden novels and the only translation was German (-.-). I jokingly said that it'd be quicker than waiting for an English translation.

Fast forward 12 years. I've read the gaiden. Guess what? Still no translations ;)

I am seriously going to start rereading Furuba's manga. Since season 1 has ended now and season 2 looks like being next year, maybe spring...I will have to crack open the volumes again. The anime  cannot leave me with a teaser like that and expect me to ignore it, dammit ><.

No worries Taffeta. I'll send you a PM after I finish 20. :D

Did I reply to this already? I feel like I did. If so, my bad. lol.

My current favorite comic of any flavor is Solo Leveling. It's a gorgeous full-color korean webcomic and it is *outstanding*. Has by far some of the best action art I've ever seen, and I have read a lot of comics. It starts a tad slow, but only a tad. By the end of chapter 3, things are pretty crazy and it only gets better from there.

You can read it online at manganelo or mangakalot. You will want a strong adblocker though. I wouldn't go there without one, I have no idea what kind of ads they run, but they are probly NSFW. I can't say for sure, though, since I don't see internet ads.

I have a huge back catalogue it's not even funny ...

This is a random thought, but does anyone remember Descendants of Darkness ( Yami no Matsuei))? I gave away my books to charity a couple of years back, it was one of the first lots of not-strictly yaoi manga I bought. I remember that it was hugely popular back in my time, I liked the art, I really appreciated the dark and horrible nature of the evil doctor character ... but the attitude of the manga-ka REALLY, REALLY put me off. I especially remember them berating fans for sending in letters written in pencil rather than ink, and I think there was also an admonishment for sending gifts? These were in the LINER NOTES of the main manga pages, I was just so put off by how bitter, angry and just overall irritated with fans they sounded. Like, seriously what is your problem?!

I recently looked it up again, looks like it's never getting continued. The gif of Tzusuki with ears and a tail was a lot of people's go-to avatar on message boards for a long time, and the 'gateway to yaoi' thing is ... kinda justified as a comment XD It had an anime, but I found the summoned attacks in the manga sort-of confusing, but that doesn't help when you are not clued-up on your Japanese mythology.

[Still think Tatsumi and Tzusuki would have been a good pairing, despite myself]

I have Yami no Matsuei's manga in Japanese but I never got past the first volume for some reason. I think I still have it, anyway. I did purge some stuff years ago but I believe it's in storage in a box somewhere. I did watch the anime, it was one of the first anime I watched when I got into it as an adult in 2007. I'm weirdly fond of it and the 'solving mystery dark creepy' despite the fact Muraki creeps me out and people fangirling over him creep me out even more than that.  (The boat episode was clever though).

No kidding about the gif of Tsuzuki. Also the fact his name means continuation is basically not lost on me. Not least since in the theme song for the anime (a song I genuinely still have on playlists despite not touching this series for literally years) also includes that word...I feel not accidentally either...

I never knew anything about the mangaka. I followed the seiyuu and went from the anime to the manga but couldn't get into it :/

Speaking of old series, I recently found I still have several volumes of DNAngel's manga propping up my bookcase (yes, literally). I thought I got rid of that years ago O.o

Just ordered Seven Days, Given (since I know there's an anime, but I honestly prefer manga), and Yarichin ***** Club (there's a bad word I can't say here). The latter I wasn't going to, but Amazon have pulled it so I want to see what's inside.

To my eternal disgust and sorrow, Caste Heaven has been licensed by SuBLime. I saw a copy in Germany (since Tokyopop is alive and well over there), looked it up to read it and ... yeah. It's DARK dark, which could be okay, I liked the basic system idea, but then when the second couple came, I was getting whiplash from one guy's mood swings. Going from nice to possessive and controlling and back again against the shy guy. And THEN ... Uh, a scene happens, and my brain snapped and I mentally threw it out the window. Nope. Not touching that again. I contacted SuBLime and there's no plans to change the scene, so Gods help those who aren't prepared for it.

EDIT: I googled to maybe read parts again to see if I misread it, and came across the reviews. People are split between disgust and outrage and wondering how it is possibly scored so high, and others are raving about it and defending the messed-up characters. Now, I can forgive questionable choices in stories depending on overall tone (I read Viewfinder, for example), but others I just cannot get over (Lies are a Gentleman's Manners, Jazz). This is absolutely in the latter. Yeesh. I might have the courage to give it another go, but I am most certainly not buying.

EDIT II: I re-read the scene. Yep. Just as horrific as I remember. Heck to the NO.

I've learned not to trust the website's in stock status for the bookstore I usually buy my manga from as it is often misleading.  Many times it will tell me that a book I want is in stock but when I get to the store that book is nowhere to be found. The website doesn't update in real time so there's always a possibility that someone else bought the book before I got to the store.

However, it has been several months since I've found the book I'm looking for in store and I think I will just order it from Amazon.

I took a long look at the manga section today to see if I could find a new series that looked interesting to me. A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow, An Incurable Case of Love and After the Rain all look promising.

Daiya is only translated up to something like 24, which is not a good place to stop, and frankly ridiculous since there are well over 60 volumes now in Japan. The animation covers almost everything in the manga mind you.

Yuugi...have you tried amazon's second hand sellers? Albeit now might be a more difficult time to do that...

Re-read "Claudine...!" the other day :) I do love that manga (even though the ending is soooo sad).

It does bug me that the cover shows Claudine with blue eyes, though, when they say on page 9 (or so) that their eyes are "a deep mahogany brown"! I hate it when illustrations do that :U

I was going to order the most recent volumes of Daiya and Yona yesterday from Amazonjp but 32 of Yona is out of stock -.- so I'm gonna have to wait till I can do all of them together. I'm hopeful that Act II vol 22 of Daiya might come out in the meantime. I know where Daiya is in the manga better than Yona right now, since I haven't been keeping up to date with Yona's latest developments for a while (they come out more slowly). But I don't really want to read translated scanlates of Daiya online either, because I've seen them and they're quite horrible in places...

I need to get back to reading the youtube raws when they come out. They're only there briefly but I figure it's ok to read them since I'm going to buy the volume when it's released anyway :P The only volume I'm not buying is 20 because the whole volume is a game between Yakushi and Ichidai and frankly I don't care xD.

Yay for Walmart Manga sales!

A while ago I also heard there was finally at least one chapter more of Saiyuuki RB, but since that moves slower than a glacier (they've been travelling across China to India since 1996, for goodness' sake) I'm not surprised to see there isn't yet a fourth volume of RB. (For anyone who cares, the Saiyuuki anime is awesome except for some of the fillery bits, but the manga is better because it makes more sense in terms of its order and doesn't butcher the best arc, Even a Worm.)

I am also debating whether to get the final volumes of OreBoku since I have most of it, but the problem is although I've read a lot of it, I always lose interest after Hotsuma's arc ends in the anime :/

And not quite manga, but I do sometimes look at the Fushigi Yuugi Gaiden on my shelf...

I have been translating one of the short stories for people on tumblr, because I basically use tumblr to dump translated anime and manga related stuffs on these days, and it got me thinking about rereading some of the Gaiden novels.

Ooh, she finally wrote Byakko?

I've wondered if she ever would. Although the problem is that if you've seen/read FY you know how both the Byakko and Genbu stories end before you begin reading them. Genbu's is quite horrible and Byakko's is just sad...so...I don't know if I will read them or not.

Although that basically buries my fanfic from 12 years ago in the dust xD LOL

FY (the main run) was published in English. I have the English volumes somewhere, because I started learning Japanese because of FY. But I don't remember who published them and I don't know if they're still in print. The anime is on CR, though, and if there's going to be a Byakko story they may well reprint the original series. With Furuba doing so well it would make sense as they're of similar vintage.

From the comments I saw on Byakko I’m figuring there can only be one person from the outside transported in to the book at one time and that means that something bad must have to the others that were brought in to the book before.

I think the  main FY series is out of print.  I found one volume at a used bookstore but I don’t remember what volume it is.  I hope they will reprint the series though. I’m getting really intrigued by FY. :D

Without spoilering it...erm...it's a bit more complicated.

But the Genbu and Byakko priestesses knew each other...in the book world they were about 100 years apart but in the real world it was a matter of a few years I think. But the Byakko priestess is a very old lady at the time the main storyline begins with Miaka and company.

That's all I'll say but...yeah.

So.

Yay for more Yona! Still haven't read 31 and 32...

i admit this problem never occurred to me when my primary source for cheap manga was when the library would have book sales of their discarded items.  I bought hundreds of books ; DH and I would drive to all the library branches  on a weekly basis to check out their sales section LOL

they were 50 cents each - wouldn't you?

problem is, now we have so many series that we only have a few of, not the whole series.  I think I will be hunting in thrift stores FOREVER to finish the collection because Amazon is expensive.  my internal voice moans, "another volume 1... another series started..."

That reminds me of when I was in Japan and the BookOff stores and their second hand manga shelves. Kyoto had multiple BookOff stores and the one in the main shopping district was really big. Shelves and shelves and shelves of stuff...

They'd be selling the entire run of a manga (even ones with 70 or 80 volumes!) shrinkwrapped together for like 10-15$ equivalent (obviously in Japanese, but that isn't an issue for me).

Not my image, but an example of what I mean...
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
But I didn't have case space to bring ANY OF THEM back with me.
It was heartbreaking :/

Kind of glad I hadn't discovered Daiya by then though. Or I would've felt compelled to try...so many of the early volumes go out of print and it's a pain. I still don't have a complete run of act 1.

Kind of glad I hadn't discovered Daiya by then though. Or I would've felt compelled to try...so many of the early volumes go out of print and it's a pain. I still don't have a complete run of act 1.

Wow!  I wouldn't be able to resist if I saw a bunch of manga series bundled together like that.

I've been keeping up with Spy X Family and Burn the Witch.(I use the Shonen Jump app for those) There are a lot of manga I've been reading but those are the main two I try to keep up with. Some of my other faves are Komi Can't Communicate, Bungo Stray Dogs, The Girl from The Other Side and Kaguya Sama Love is War.

Ordered vol 33 of Yona and 23 and 24 of Daiya Act II this morning. I'm up to date with the Daiya manga more or less because I read the Japanese raws when they hit YT, but I still like to buy it anyway. I'm not up to date with Yona because I'm a coward and would rather have a stock of books before catching up...wary of cliffhangers xD.

I was torn between reading Yona 26 before I got 27 or waiting until 27 was released but I read 26 today.

I wish Diamond no Ace was still published in English in physical copies.  The digital version is up to vol 29 of Act 1 but I prefer reading physical copies of manga.

I’m behind on Takane and Hana.  Volume 16 will be published in Jan but I still need to read vols 10-15.

I didn't realize it had been so long since I posted in this thread.  I did get volume 27 of Yona along with Mermaid Saga 1 but haven't read either one yet.  Yona 28 will be released in Feb so I'll probably wait until I have 28 and read then read 27. I think the next volume of Mermaid Saga come out in February too.

I'm missing the latest volume of Takane and Hana.  My bookstore had it out before the release date and when I went back after that date the book had been sold.

Does anyone have any recommendations for manga series?  I am looking at starting a new series but I get overwhelmed  by all of the series at the bookstore.

I just started reading a manga called An Incurable Case of Love. It's a cute romance and the humor sort of reminds me of Takane and Hana. It's a nurse/doctor romance story and I guess you'd call it slice of life as it's not fantasy in it, just regular folks, although the main guy got deemed the dark lord, which is really funny in story. But I've gotten through vol 1 and 2 and have just ordered 3 and 4 from amazon. Not sure how many vol in all, and not even sure if it's finished.

That's the only issue I ever have with manga series, it's hard to tell for sure if a series is ongoing or if it's finished? Some of them if you do a google search I can never find for sure info sometimes If they're over or if we get everything. I saw something about Takane and Hana is ending soon but I'm confused on which issue is the last and something about the last vol is going to be sold with some kinda color extra thing (sorry I can't remember exactly now what I read), but I'm sorta confused is the english version going to come with the extra or is that just in japan? Another series I watched first as an anime, I can't figure out if it's over or still ongoing. Kakuriyo bed and breakfast for spirits. I've got vol 1-4 of the manga, but I was confused when searching amazon if vol 6 is the end...
Title: Re: What manga are you reading?
Post by: Ponyfan on February 24, 2021, 04:55:37 PM
I haven't really looked in to it but I also think Takane and Hana will be ending soon. Viz used to release a new volume every 3 months or so (I noticed because the release day always matched Yona. :D) but now it's down to one volume every 4 or 5 months.  Maybe they are waiting to see if the series will continue beyond vol 17?  The extra thing sound like something that will only be included in the Japanese version but Viz might surprise us.

It can get confusing though.  I saw some posts when a volume of Yona was released a while back where people were speculating that it was going to the ending arc. Thanks to Taffeta I knew this wasn't true because  she told me that volumes past that number had been issued in Japan. :D

I might check out An Incurable Case of Love.  :) I glanced at it once before and thought it was interesting but the bookstore was missing a volume.

I've just been checking up on release dates and discovered Daiya Act II 26 and Yona 35 are both due out this month, so I'll hold off on 25 and 34 from Amazon.jp until the end of the month. I don't like Ichidai Sankou players being on the cover of Daiya manga. I'm getting territorial. ;) Having Nori on 25 is nice though.

The image on 34 of Yona is cute but I like the one on 35 better. <3

I got my manga and it came off our quarantine table today ;)

My first thing is always to look at the end of the Yona volumes to see who's still alive...

There's a whole random new character I never saw before though, so I guess I missed a lot.

The Daiya volumes have got as far as the start of the game that's currently reaching the end in the newly released chapters, so it's pretty up to date. Although it's an annoyingly long and frustrating game...;)

The Way of the Househusband sounds interesting.

My copies of Yona 29 and Komi 9 came but I haven't read them yet. My Yona came with a big bend in one of the top corners of the cover but I don't want to send it back in case I would get a copy with more damage.

I am reading a manga I ordered from amazon called Fiancee of the Wizard, seems like there are only 3 vol so far or at least that is what I was able to order. I'm already starting #3 today.

It seems like i might have read a chapter of this online somewhere once but either way it's really beautiful to look at art-wise; which is always a plus for me with mangas. It's Sort of a reincarnation story, however that doesn't seem to play very much into the story or even the main character's life. I don't particularly know why it's even part of the story, unless maybe further along it comes up but the only thing I can see is the main female lead thinks about it, but other than that I don't see why it even needed to be in this story. I guess this is sort of a romance/slice of life. There is magic cause...uh, Wizard (LOL), but it doesn't seem to be the main aspect of the story, it's more a relationship/romance IMO, at least for the first two vol. so far.

Yona of the Dawn 31 comes out next week in the US. :D

Does anyone know if there is some kind of distribution issue with Fly Me to the Moon volume 3?   My local bookstore doesn't have it in stock and it's not available on Amazon.  Viz media is usually great about publishing more once the initial stock is gone so it seems a little odd that one book out of the series is harder to find.  It was just released in January so it's not too old of a release.

I unashamedly like BnHA but I've avoided the manga because the idea of obtaining that many volumes in Japanese is hurting my head. I already have problems storing Act II of Daiya and I don't even have most of Act I.

As much as I enjoy BnHA (still hate all the villains though, literally all of them, LOL), it's a difficult series to engage with in terms of online fandom. You either get people going on about how it's the best series they ever saw because they've seen about six series, or the people who are trying to look down on it because it's a shounen series and pretty mainstream. And both of those attitudes just annoy me xD.

I feel like for all it's a mainstream shounen series, the character development is pretty decent. Deku and Bakugou are not entirely what you expect them to be at times, and so many of both 1A and also 1B have some decent development as well. I guess it's always all about the characters for me, but yeah. I'm stuck with the anime because of the manga situation, but I'm glad it's still going thus far. I just wish I cared more about the villains, because I prefer it when they're not involved.

I do wonder sometimes how much it was inspired by Tiger & Bunny though, or if that's coincidence.

I still need to catch up my Yona volumes. @Ponyfan, I think you are about at the same place as I am, almost...I keep meaning to get to it and then I get distracted. :)

Daiya manga is still on hiatus. It's the only one I read online, but it isn't due to resume till next month. And frankly, where it ended before the hiatus bothered me on a few levels and pleased me on others. It was a logical place to break, if the writer needed a break, but there are things swirling around that chapter that raise questions.

In short, I've spent the last eight weeks wanting to shake Eijun xD and worrying about what the impact will be going forward...

@Ponyfan - so I have till next month to catch up on Yona then? XD

I accidentally missed a volume of Daiya when buying the latest ones so that's annoying. I try and wait till I have several books together before importing them, so it will have to wait for now. The manga going on hiatus means that the published manga books for Daiya have reached the hiatus point, so Bk 28 ends with Eijun being annoying.

There probably aren't enough chapters yet to do 29, either. Sigh.

I've been thinking of starting A Silent Voice or Haikyuu

Right now I have some of my Yona volumes right here next to me. But they're helpfully 29, 34 and 35 xD.

I've not had much time for manga because I'm working on something else which requires me reading in Japanese, so I don't then feel like sitting down and reading whole manga volumes. I'm more prone to flop in front of anime. I'm guessing 32 is somewhere around/undeneath my Saiyuuki volumes though. It's here somewhere.

I bought Yona 32 yesterday along with Way of the Househusband 6, A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow 3,  A Silent Voice 1 and 3 ( I thought I was buying 1 and 2) and My Love Mix Up.

I was drawn to My Love Mix Up by the cover and the description on the back but after I started looking more in to it after I got home I'm not sure it's going to be a series I'll enjoy. I'll probably buy at least the first 2 volumes before I decide.

I'm debating whether I want to buy current volumes of a few series I'm thinking about reading like Fly Me to the Moon and Haikyuu and then fill in the gaps later or not.  Fly Me to the Moon isn't that long yet but Haikyuu is at volume 46.

I'm going to rearrange my manga this weekend to make room for the new books I bought.

Edit:  Amazon had something that I wanted to get back in stock this morning so I also bought A Silent Voice 2, and A Man and His Cat 1 and 2.

I'd watch some of the haikyuu anime before deciding if you want to buy all that manga ;) Since it's there on CR and I think on netflix as well, some of it :) I have not read the Haikyuu manga, although I know how it ends...ish. But it is a lot of stuff. It's not as long as Daiya mind you..

That's a great idea, Taffeta.  :D  I'll do that before I  decide if I want  to buy the  Haikyuu manga.

I tried watching a little more of Fly Me to the Moon/Over the Moon for You but so far it hasn't impressed me enough to make me want to read the manga.  Luckily I only have volumes 1 and 2 right now.

I'm also trying to decide if I want to buy Sailor Moon Eternal.  I was originally against it because I already had most of the smaller volumes at the time it was announced and the volumes are about 3x times bigger than standard mangas.

The publisher says that they have made Eternal a smoother translation than the volumes I have and have fixed many of the mistakes that were present in the original English version.  I'm not sure if that statement is completely true though because  I read online that  Sailor V Enteral has many of the same mistakes that still aren't corrected.

I also saw that Sailor Moon Eternal will be reissued in 22 in a smaller size.

I'm tempted by the Eternal editions too, especially Sailor V - I saw it while I was out today and omg, it's soooo pretty and shiny... *o* And the thought of a smoothed-out translation is nice too, I honestly wasn't a huge fan of Kodansha's translation... Yeah, it's better/more accurate than the old Mixx translation (from what I've seen of that), but I thought Kodansha's take was a bit too stiff a lot of the time. Wasn't a fan of their massive wall of translator notes at the end either (don't get me wrong, I like TL notes, but they could get a bit excessively long... a lot of those really could've just been quick footnotes...!). That's disappointing that there's still a lot of errors in V though :(

oooh, I wonder what size the 2022 reprints will be. Something right in between the old editions and the Eternals would be lovely.

I bought Sailor Moon Eternal vol 1 today.  Surprisingly it fits on the shelf with my other mangas (It looks huge in the bookstore) with a little room to spare.  It's only a little bigger than The Way of the Househusband,  If I like the first volume I'll get the smaller versions of Eternal when they come out.

I'd be happy to post comparison pictures between the older Kodansha releases and Eternal if anyone is interested. :)

I also bought A Man and His Cat 3, A Silent Voice 4 and Komi  Can't Communicate 15.  I like my books to be in excellent condition  but I didn't realize that the copy of Komi I bought has a bad bend in the front cover.  : (  I didn't catch it at the store so I don't know if it was already like that or got bent in the bag.  The other copy they had looked like it had been sliced with a boxcutter.  I don't want to take it back to the bookstore so I'll just have to be really careful handling it so it doesn't get worse.

The thing about translations is that there will always be elements of Japanese that two different translators will render differently but both be technically correct. It's probably going to be a case of what sounds best to you when reading it and knowing the series well. There really isn't another way to do it, since you're never going to get a translation that is 100% conveying the original. Japanese and English are just built too differently.

This is especially true with Japanese and American English, because American English is pretty direct and Japanese is absolutely not direct and built often on implication and inference (hence the translation gaps). Most English scanlations are done in the US, so that's a factor as well.

I remember a massive issue in the Bleach community way back when that stemmed from a scanlation issue that was really hard to overturn and had a major impact on how a lot of people understood the plot. I remember going back to investigate it with the sense that the story was one way, and then realising that actually it wasn't, and that it could be traced back to a mistranslation of one small phrase some several chapters earlier. That was kinda scary...

I'll get some pics. :D   I'm hoping that Kodansha at least fixed the major errors like "spark ring pressure" instead of "sparkling wide pressure" for Jupiter's attack.

I've noticed that Eternal still has translator notes in the back but I don't know yet if there are less than the original editions.

I still need to read Yona 32.

pff, I forgot about "Spark Ring Pressure" XD That reminds me of how Tokyopop messed up with their release of Tokyo Mew Mew volume 1, one of the attacks is meant to be something like "Strawbellbell" or "Strawberry Bell" (IIRC it's a sort of pun/wordplay that doesn't translate well, I think they ended up going with "Strawberry Bell" eventually) but they somehow ended up translating it as "Sutoro Bell Bell" x) Still surprised no one caught THAT one before it went to print. They did fix it for later volumes, but still!

Taffeta - re: your previous post (wanted to say this before but I was having trouble wording it at the time) - yeah, I get what you mean. The translator can really make or break a translation.. okay, that's obvious, but like, their "voice". I was watching a fansub the other day, and it was all accurate and stuff (well, at least as far as I could tell), but I just... couldn't get into it as much as I normally would've, because the translator had tried too hard to give each character their own speech patterns, voice, etc - to mimic how they originally spoke - and the end result just didn't work (IMO), it was too over-the-top. Sorta the opposite problem to what I was saying about Kodansha's Sailor Moon release, now I think about it. They had a problem with being a bit too stiff/not enough "character", this one had too *much* character :p

It's kinda like how a bad dub can kill your enjoyment of the program; you can tell there's a good story under it all but the acting, or script, or whatever, is just taking away from it. I dunno if I'm explaining this right, but yeah.

Re Strawberry Bell - probably a victim of the r/l conflation?

I feel like subs are sometimes really hit and miss, for a number of reasons.

I remember when Dattebayo subbed Bleach and frankly, rewrote bleach to include more graphic threats, swear words and the like. I have no real idea why, but I remember a lot of Bleach fans then complaining about more accurately produced subs that they felt had been censored because they didn't contain those things.

It is definitely possible to go OTT on stuff as well. I think most people would prefer things like 'san' to be left in, and not silly words like 'sissy!' when the text actually uses 'neechan'. These are pretty common terms, but if you want to omit them, just use the character's name instead. It's simpler, you know?

Another issue is if a subber doesn't know the series that well. Some things are hard to understand without context, especially if there is special terminology. For example, the original fansub I have of the Haruka series, back before I spoke Japanese, mistakes the name of a character (Sanehisa) for something else, because Sanehisa's name literally appears once? in the anime (vs more times in the manga) and it's being yelled.

And then there are just mistakes. My favourite one is from Daiya, where the subber (this is CR) seems to have given up on the line, because the sub says, "what does he say?" What the character actually says is something like, "he held down the inning without conceding a run" or something on those lines, and it's pretty clearly audible even with the background noise. But I feel like that was a note for them to come back to it and they didn't and it accidentally got through.

I rewatched Season 3 of KKM in the summer. It never had an official DVD release in English as far as I know, since the company producing it went bust, so it's a fansub and I haven't watched it in years. My Japanese has improved a lot in that time, and I was genuinely horrified at how many of the lines are wrong. It made me feel like I'd actually watched the series for the first time, because it was the first time I'd understood the actual dialogue :/

On the style of speech though. A lot of characters do have specific styles of speech. Again with Bleach, there's a character where I think it's actually impossible to translate his lines in the way they're written. Not because it's complicated, but I just don't know how to render how he speaks into English that conveys the same intent. And there's another character who speaks entirely in katakana, including katakana that are seldom used in modern day Japanese writing. I just...how do you explain that, except that the speech pattern is unusual?

At the end of the day translators can just do their best to make a version that flows, that doesn't deviate from the writer's original intent and which conveys the actual plot rather than changing major plot points because of a misread phrase or misheard statement. There's never a perfect translation, but some are definitely better than others.

IIRC the bell thing is a bit of a weird portmanteau of "bell" and "berry" originally. I can see why it tripped them up - the attack/weapon names in TMM are all odd puns that don't TL well, *I'm* still not entirely sure of some of them - but it's weird they got stuck on the "straw" part :p

Re: speech patterns, they're definitely important to try and convey in the translation, the problem was this particular fansub went a bit OTT with it - the characters ended up sounding like weird parodies or over-the-top goofy cartoon characters, instead of normal people x) There's definitely a knack to that sort of stuff. Personally if it's something that doesn't translate well (like the katakana thing you mentioned, that's a good example), I'd rather people just scrap it and add a note about it somewhere, rather than trying to shoehorn in some sort of equivalent.

My opinion on honorifics is, I'd rather they be kept, BUT if you're gonna not use them, at least try and keep to the spirit of the original dialogue. "Oneechan" being translated to "sis" is alright if the characters are actually sisters - but if it's being used in an admiring way - translating it that way is weird. I think ADV did a reasonably good job with this for their Wedding Peach fansub... when the girls were calling their crush "-sama" they translated as "dearest" or "dear", not totally perfect, but worked reasonably well. If it was one of the antagonists using "Raindevila-sama" for the baddie, they translated it as "Lady Raindevila", etc. That's what I mean - either keep the honorifics, or find contextually-appropriate substitutes for them.

It also really bugs me if a character calls another by their surname and the subs use their forename instead.. If I'm hearing "Harukaze-san" (for example) I don't mind if the subs say "Harukaze-san", "Miss Harukaze" or just "Harukaze", but it'd really annoy me if they said "Doremi". Even setting aside the fact that what one character calls another is often meaningful, it's just annoying to see one thing when you can clearly hear that's not what's being said.

I do agree some subs go waaay over the top with honorifics, suffixes, etc, though. I'd rather see "Your majesty" over "Jou-sama" for a queen character, for example.

I also dislike when they switch surname for first name. Or, Fushigi Yuugi is a good example of this, but the characters mostly are Chinese, riight? So the English manga translation gives them all Chinese names and all the countries Chinese names, based on the characters they are written with. But the Japanese manga uses the same characters but with the Japanese readings SO...you get two completely different names. I don't even know most of the Chinese names for the Yuugi characters...I remember the country Kounan being 'Hong Nan' instead though. I get why they did it but it feels over the top.

Similar happened with the names Sefuru and Ikutidaru in Haruka - they became Sefle and Icktidarl (shivers).

I'm opposite when it comes to some of those things with honorifics though. I guess I'm just used to them? Lady xx for sama is fine, as is your majesty for jou-sama, or prince for ouji. They're quite straight forward. Also straight translations like Count for Hakushaku, )academic) Dr for Hakusei are fine.  But I'm not a fan of 'dear' for 'chan', nor 'hime' for princess. Sensei also has way too many possible translations, so it's definitely a case by case.

I suspect that opinion is massively biased though. In general I prefer to see honorifics preserved where possible because I'm not a fan of westernising cultural references, especially when they change the nuances of relationships. But that's just my perspective as a Japanese speaker, which is not really valid considering an English speaking audience.

I've never understood why Kodansha never went back in the reprintings and fixed the major errors.  My copies of the smaller volumes still have "Spark Ring Pressure" and "Princess Beryl" instead of Queen Beryl.

And then there are just mistakes. My favourite one is from Daiya, where the subber (this is CR) seems to have given up on the line, because the sub says, "what does he say?" But I feel like that was a note for them to come back to it and they didn't and it accidentally got through.

The first time I watched that episode I thought I missed Eijun's line instead of Kanemaru's because I  was still having trouble distinguishing voices when characters spoke off screen.

I've lost count how many times the CR subs switch the name order back and forth between Japanese order and Western order even though the characters are always using Japanese order (except the American team but that's a another issue.)

I don't mind if translators use Japanese order or English order for names, just pick one and be consistent with it.

Kodansha never did fix those errors for the regular editions? Oh man, why?? I could understand if they were just tiny typos or nitpicky things, but...

I forgot about "Princess Beryl". Not sure how they managed THAT one, her name is completely in English to begin with...! "Spark Ring" I can see where they got that one from, the problem is that somehow no one caught in the QC stage.. but "Princess Beryl"... How...

edit: ooh, I did just find [this](http://missdream.org/editorials/sailor-moon-kodansha-release-vol-2-errors/), which suggests they were going for something along the lines of "Princess [Serenity], I am Queen Beryl.." etc etc... that'd make sense, but how in the heck did they end up botching it up into "Princess Beryl"? o.O

I can't even remember what the last manga I read was. I think Noragami..?

Although I do occasionally check on "You own my all" Manhua.
Quote
Third Prince Jing Shao was victorious in war and always surrounded by countless beauties. However, he was wrongly framed and lost everything. Yet the only person who followed him was the unfavoured male concubine that he neglected for years…… After his reincarnation, Jing Shao decided to start afresh and chase after his male wife. Although it seems things will not go as planned, chasing a wife is harder than he thought!

It's based off the Chinese BL novel "The wife is First". It's actually a pretty good story but the manhua is  more PG, whereas the novel is less censored.

That's really interesting.  I never thought about Queen Beryl addressing Princess Serenity and it changing somehow to Princess Beryl when it was translated.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I also found vol 32 although I haven't read it properly yet, just skimmed it, since I'll read it properly in sequence with the others when I get there. There are some interesting things in it. I have many thoughts.

I also realised I had got 35 but not 36 and so I ordered that today along with the missing volume I have for Daiya Act II. 37 comes out around Christmas in Japanese. The English volumes are almost caught up O.O.

So I got to rereading vol 29 of Yona, but since vol 29 annoys me a bit for reasons, I ended up skimming through the rest of the chapters I had on hand, with reading bits and pieces along the way. I'm going back to read it properly, but vol 36 came out of quarantine this morning so...
