Title: Gen 5 news announced- setting sail for 2021 and new cast!
Post by: Mana Minori on August 28, 2020, 11:48:21 AM
Some big news has arrived out of Festival of Licensing. (Source: https://www.licensing.biz/hasbro-joins-festival-of-licensing-with-new-peppa-pig-content-pj-masks-toy-plans-and-more/) My Little Pony Generation 5 is finally getting some new information released after almost a year of silence on it. We knew Twilight Sparkle wasn't returning, but it's looking like Hasbro is going for a full on, brand new cast for this one as seen in the quote:

Next up, the world of Equestria is expanding to introduce a new generation of ponies to a new generation of fans. With more humor, heart, and music than ever before, Hasbro hopes that audiences will be swept away by the new cast of ponies and the incredible adventure that awaits them. Fall in love with My Little Pony all over again when the all-new, computer-animated theatrical feature hits theaters everywhere in September 2021.

The date for the movie was revealed way back in 2019, and pretty much everything from the early leaks have been completely debunked at this point, or changed up. We really are going in blind! Hopefully it's good.

Hmm. Sounds promising. I just hope "new cast" really does mean "new cast" and it isn't just a way of saying "it's a new series".

Nice to have a projected release date, too.

This isn't directed at you, just in general.

Whatever we had leaked to us was concepts. It doesn't take much for someone big to just say "nope, do it again". We saw mane 6, which could of very well been a place holder for "new" that wasn't developed.

But let's just think about this. There's a G3 Pinkie Pie, and a G4 Pinkie Pie. We could very well just see the same characters but they are revamped.

Nothing has changed in my eyes. We still know nothing, one way or another.

“New cast”... I really, really, REALLY hope this actually means an all new cast! I suppose hoping that they drop the entire centralized cast idea is too much to hope for.

My dream is that any and all MLP animation goes back to being a half-hour toy commercial with a perpetually rotating cast. XD

I'm always excited to hear G5 news!

But "new cast" has me interested... I somehow doubt they're scrapping the Mane 6 entirely. It's a dream, yes, but they've become so integral to the brand, unfortunately. We'll probably just get new versions of it. A "new" Pinkie Pie, a "new" Rainbow Dash...

Spoiler
Whatever comes out of it, I hope we get those dragon ponies!! Please please please, Hasbro... :good:

Ohhh, interesting!

I think "new cast" does imply a new cast of characters.  I think otherwise they'd say, like, "a rebooted series with reimaginings of the characters you know and love!!" or something like that.

But I guess we'll see!  This is exciting news either way!

Edit:  Looks like the Festival of Licensing is in early October so we won't have too long of a wait. :)

I hate how accurately you worded that, they probably would have done that, you're right. I won't get any high hopes though.

If they're new characters, I hope they have great names and better designs. I think Rainbow Dash had Twilight had the best designs out of the Mane 6, but the others were bland. Rarity might get a pass from me because her dark purple hair is interesting (and she's my favourite character of the bunch!), but as for Pinkie, Fluttershy, and Applejack? Tiring... I love their Rainbow Power versions though, I hope they add a bit more colour to them. The princesses had great designs as well, Celestia is so pretty. Fluttershy was a lot more appealing when she had pastel pink hair instead of the fluorescent pink they keep giving her for whatever reason.

I'm with those who think "new cast" means "new characters".  I love G4 and all it's ponies (they're my gateway generation after all) but I wanna hear about other new ponies.  Maybe a mixed group of critters?  More Griffins, Hippogriffs, Changelings and Dragons, etc? I feel that was sort of field tested in the latter years.  Maybe shorten it to "MLP" and focus on a wider range of toys/characters?

Okay, I'm just dreaming here. but I have slightly more hope for G5 now than I did.

that wouldn’t too bad of an idea. It would be a nice shake up to the formula to have half the characters ponies and half some other species. Would love some characters other than ponies right out the gate. I know Hasbro wouldn’t do that, though.

I just kind of imagine that this Festival of Licensing is a bunch of big brand name companies who get together, get smashed over luncheon and brag about their franchises while making deals.

Well, I mean, when I see how the recent pony news are going, I have no sensible reason to expect G5 to be the wonderland I've always dreamed of. ^^'

tl;dr : I'll wait and see. :3

Right? We've been burned before ;)

Of course a "new generation" can mean anything...it doesn't have to be a brand new concept, just a revamp which is then called "a new generation".

Random,ly this made me laugh, though. Because of how many tabs I had open on my browser already when I opened this one, it cut off the name halfway through. So it just said "Hasbro joins Festival of Lice..."

...Well, that would be new O.o.

I sincerely hope we get a whole new cast but I’m not going to get too excited until there is actual confirmation.

 Re: non-pony cast members.

I actually hope that the majority of the primary cast remain ponies.  I like My Little Pony *because* they are ponies.  Don’t get me wrong, I like the other creatures as supporting cast.  But I don’t want half the cast to be non-pony.  To me it would be like having half the cast of Smurfs not be Smurfs.

That being said, I think that a good number of the species in G4 should have been subspecies of pony rather than an entirely different species, with their own symbols and everything.  Particularly, the Kirin, the hippogriffs/sea ponies (and make them separate species this time!) the Breezies and the zebras.

Excited about the new cast part. Less excited about the "computer animated" part, as if that's something rare and special during this point in time lol. I know that FiM was also computer animated but in this context I am assuming it means G5 shows will be 3D animated. I'm so burned out on 3D, but that's just a personal issue.

As long as the toys are nice (and varied and BRUSHABLE  ) I'll be happy.

Oh don't even joke about that... I swear if they do that again I'll..... be very disappointed in them.

It's such a nightmare trying to search for the original movie now. @__@; I mean, I get it, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The Movie" is too much of a mouthful, but.... come on. Literally anything would've been better than just reusing the title of the 80s film...

i have to wonder if they aren’t, if the collector fan base would make enough noise like the Sonic fan base, to get things to change.
I hope it doesn’t come to that, if the toys are more horse-like from the start, but even so...

I am praying that by "CGI" they mean "CGI rigs with 2D-looking animation over it", like Transformers Cyberverse (which isn't the prettiest, but also isn't ugly) or Toonboom like the G4 MLP movie (which was gorgeous.)

But I'm keeping my expectations low . . . It's better to start out with low expectations; then anything good that comes about is a wonderful surprise. :)

Really? I'm getting the feeling it'll look like a really low budget Paw Patrol.

American animation is too cheap and sucky these days for it not to be.

Well I mean Castlevania looks good but the length, pacing and dialogue leave much to be desired.
Even though it delivered some real gems from Bluefang, Isaac and Godbrand.

And I've heard good things about Dragon Prince, done by Team Avatar, but those are exceptions not the rule.

I'm not sure if the actual animation side of it bothers me. I mean yeah, I agree with all the things said about 3d and cgi and whatever, but to me mlp is always gonna be the toyline first...so the simple solution to that is just not watch the series if the animation is bad...or...well...get used to it I suppose if the series is good.

If the toyline is good then I will probably not care about the animation so much. Especially if it actually has decently worked plot and character this time. And is entirely lacking in Pinkie Pie.

What I mean is that it would be worse to have the Mane 6 characters duplicated under different appearances than have bad animation if the characters and plot were genuinely worth investing in.

Eek, I had not considered that possibility. O_O Somewhere in my head, I’m still imagining that leaked concept art that was similar to the Celestia/Luna build. But I suppose that’s been revised many times, or even dropped altogether.

l just want something that resembles actual equine. Pleeeaaase, Hasbro! At least bring back the lower jaw!

Tara Strong mentioned a while ago that she won't be in G5 so I really, strongly hope "new cast" will mean entirely new characters, new actresses, etc.

Until they'll just force the new six onto shelves again and again, but at least for a while the new ones will actually be new

I also hope final character designs will get leaked sooner or later because that's what's truly important to me, haha. Especially if the B-words hate them

Yeah, I had forgotten that new cast could simply be who voices the ponies, not the ponies themselves.

...Entirely irrelevant in my toycentric world of pony, but that's a depressing realisation.

Now thinking we're gonna get same ponies rehashed with sparkly new voice people instead.

This is an announcement for a licensing event, though, so I think "new cast" is more likely to relate to the cast of characters, not just the voice cast.  You aren't hearing a voice as you're looking at a licensed image of a MLP or a Transformer on a napkin or paper plate.  What matters is if the Transformer is Bumblebee.

Actually I think that is the most likely circumstance, they are going to make a new series where every pony is going to be Bumblebee or Optimus Prime.  Like, each pony will be a version of them from a slightly different continuity.

We used to be able to look up licencing information and such, I remember us doing it a lot for G3 wih prospective names being registered.... Is that still a possibility?

Just wanted to add that I find the promises of "more music than ever before" quite interesting. FiM had a lot of songs, topping that will turn the series into a full-on musical. I expect a song in every second episode now, maybe even in each and every one

I'm just not fond of the "more humour" part. That's Pony Life for me. Don't get me wrong, it really works for PL. But I am dreading  FiM-style humour, just double the amount. Forced memes, even more pony puns, and of course one or two characters only dedicated to tell jokes or be a laughing stock like Snips and Snails.

We should be able to stalk it still! I'm sure sites like Eq-*Chokes on saliva and coughs up a hairball* and MLPMerch may get on the news first.
The event  (https://www.thegloballicensinggroup.com/en/home.html#:~:text=The%20Festival%20of%20Licensing%20is,business%20on%20an%20international%20stage.)looks to be taking place in October. Hasbro specifically I'm assuming will present from the 20th to 22nd.

Jem was all about them being in bands, so if they don't make it music-themed they at least have to make it an actual musical. So, songs that drive the plot instead of "smile, smile, smile" or "cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes" (actual lyrics from FiM, lol). Something like the song the princesses sang before Twilight got crowned and stuff. Otherwise the songs would just pad out the runtime. I am looking forward to finding out how they're gonna handle this. I love musicals.

Me too. There are basically only 2 MH specials I've watched more than once, I think. And one of those is entirely because it's a musical :)

What I'm excited for, just think, that we'll be seeing the "new" ponies definitely by February for Toy Fair! And probably sooner. We got our first look at the 2017 movie cast at Toy Fair, didn't we? At least that's what I remember... Skystar, Capper, Tempest, etc. When did we see the first trailer? I remember being so frustrated because it felt like it took forever to come out, I was anxious to see if it was 2D tween animation or 3D.

Achoo! (https://hasbropulse.com/pages/hasbro-pulsecon-2020) Sniff, excuse me, it's a bit dusty. Smells a bit like HasCon did.
No mention of Pony and seems to be very..."boy toy" focused (a whole issue I have with Hasbropulse), but is sooner than the licensing festival and may have a crumb of something.

No mention of Pony and seems to be very..."boy toy" focused (a whole issue I have with Hasbropulse), but is sooner than the licensing festival and may have a crumb of something.
k

The Crossovers just scream Con Exclusive. Breyerfest had their exclusives easily available online as well this year. Hasbro has been putting out crossover TFs as well.that also scream Con exclusives. Wouldn't surprise me if they did one for their new GI Joe line.

Toy Fair for 2021 has been postponed.

That sucks. I mean, yeah, it makes sense, but it always happens around my birthday, which means there's always some exciting news online around then. Last year I think it was actually over the weekend of my birthday. Maybe they will organise some digital thing instead because the businesses will still want to sell product to the screaming masses.

...But I suppose it also depends how events go with the virus.

I should add that there's normally a London fair in Jan (which may have also been cancelled, it may well be held at one of the places the govt has had repurposed for field hospitals, albeit they're not currently in use for that...who knows in the winter). That's generally the first clue to things, with NY giving the meat on the bones.

But I thought Pony was for boys now, too! Hasbro must be sitting on mountains of Pinkie Pies, they could just melt some together and sell the result :P

Ooooh I'm so excited! I also hope that they'll be an all-new cast.

I don't collect g4 and I don't really mind the existence of "brony" fans (when it comes to wholesome fandom), so I don't really have a gripe with the mane-6 - I guess because MLP:FiM was what introduced me to MLP, so this gen's always been about the show for me. But I would love a new gen to return to being collectible based on individual pony designs instead of established characters. Since Hasbro had so much success with a "central cast" in the past, though, who knows?

Either way, I can't wait to see new designs!!

If PL is the transition point and a stepping stone between one and the other, then we might be looking at more slice of life/comedy in the new series.

My current fear, and maybe my biggest at the moment, is the ponies having terrible names. :( Take the new "collector ponies" or whatever you want to call them for example, Lite Brite and the DnD ponies, etc. None of these names are good. There all on the godawful end of the spectrum. They actually make me irrationally angry. It lacks any creativity. "Uh oh guys, we have some new pony characters, what do we name them? I got it, Pinkmane! And Hearthoof! Jelly Mare!" Pull the first word out of a hat and then choose a horse-related word for the second half. No thought or effort required! -_-

I don't think Hasbro would do this for their next main cast but if they do... I'll start the riot!

They did use Pinkie Pie. In two generations. That name irritated me from G3 and they kept it >< There are a lot of annoying names in G3, honestly, but...yeah, I wouldn't rule out a new cast pony with a silly name.

Let's not forget that they got away with Tink-a-Tink-a-Too already.

Yeah Tink's full name is pretty silly. I never liked Pinkie Pie's name either, or  Pearly Pie's for that matter. Like, what even are those? And Bright Brightly's name is redundant and sounds bad. Not to mention Blushie and Pink Sunsparkle.

2 of the DnD ponies have nice names. I like Woodheart and Star Shadow. Mystaria is a bit clunky,  but no more so, then Peri Winkle or Sunny Daze.

!!!  Nice catch!  I googled it and it was called Mystara, but I do think her name is a deliberate reference, it's so close!

I like all the D&D pony names, "Valor Stronghoof" isn't even a pun, really, it's just a pony version of a quintessential Barbarian last name like "Strongjaw".

To me the worst name situation is if they just called them "Katie" and "Billie" like that one G1 set.  "And here are the new characters: Sally, Joan, Margaret, and Bob."

Meh, I'd rather take Billie and Katie over some of the worst G4 blind bag names. I don't mind the occasional human name, or the occasional Tink-a-Tink-a-Too, but some of the later G4 names were a whole new low -_- Dane Tee Dove anyone? (If it was "Dainty" I wouldn't care, but why the stupid spelling?)

I was just thinking that if the new movie is supposed to have both the new and the old main characters, then won't the style for the new characters have to be similar to G4? It seems really strange that they'd introduce a brand new style right after having a G4ish movie. But even if the new movie is in a different style, why bother having G4 ponies that won't look the same in there?

I'm so confused about what Hasbro is trying to do.  :P

I don't think so . . . I mean, Pony Life isn't in the usual G4 style but people still understand they're meant to be the same characters.

I'm curious if they'll have the same voices, because recently Hasbro has been eschewing Canadian VAs in favor of . . . like . . . random people they found off Youtube.  Even for really big productions, like their Transformers Netflix series.  (Some of the worst voice acting I have ever heard in a professionally produced cartoon, I was dying.)  I hope they continue to use 'real' (professional) VAs for MLP . . .

Wait... Do you mean they ACTUALLY  scouted the VAs from Youtube? If so, that’s a horrifying prospect for future Hasbro projects. I figured the fresh VA cast had to do with what studios were involved, like what happened when the Pokemon dub changed hands.

I'm not sure if they all were, but I'm pretty sure I heard that the guy playing Optimus Prime in the Netflix series was "discovered" from his Youtube channel and I'm pretty sure that was also the case for Shockwave and some others.  Yeah, it seems like an extremely unprofessional way to go about it--especially for a Netflix show, like wouldn't you want that to be as polished as possible??

They were soooo bad, especially Optimus and Jetfire.

And an artist from the fandom as well for G5, right?

Not that I'm saying that's a bad thing, I just wonder if this is part of their arsenal to keep the fandom alive while changing it entirely. Like they tried to hook Lauren Faust to the G1 bandwagon for continuity.

But then they would have to pay SAG/ACTRA pay rates and contracts.  It's so much easier when they can poach from young creatives who don't understand their rights yet.

There are other reasons for Hasbro to want to cast independent actors instead of ACTRA ones besides wanting to take advantage.

ACTRA's a union, so while it sets standards for things like how long an actor can work before they need to be paid over time, mandatory breaks, and minimum pay rate, it also has some really questionable practices, including the union fees regardless of if a member gets any jobs or not, or how they aren't allowed to work on non-ACTRA sets without getting special permission (or if they manage to sneak it in and are just credited under a different name, which is easier to do with voice acting, but still comes with the risk of penalties if they're caught).

It can be really unfair to the production teams as well; if you have an ACTRA set it has to be all ACTRA, I believe the exception is extras, but most of them still have to be ACTRA, while any principal characters will need a temporary pass. I'm not sure if they're still doing this, but they used to have a policy where you could get away with not using them for the first couple of features you made, but then it was mandatory. My local branch also has a program aimed at people starting out where they'll give you a discount on the rates, but in exchange own part of the finished feature, which wouldn't impact Hasbro, but is still kind of obnoxious.

So yes, it's probably less being able to over work people found on the internet and more an effort to try and show ACTRA they aren't the only option anymore and break the stranglehold they have on everyone
