Title: ever bought a pony and realize you like/dislike them more then you thought?
Post by: kingluke on May 01, 2019, 12:21:16 AM
I bought many ponies but fortunately none so far have made me regret getting them.
I'm pleasantly surprised mostly. I didn't know I would like the second wave of the g1 rainbow ponies that much (halfway there :)) and I keep reaching for lemon drop.
For my g4 ponies I'm mostly disappointed in the hair quality, but not in the pony in general. Plus blind bag doubles, but I customize those.

edit: I once bought a gorjuss ruby doll but I haven't been able to bond with her yet, thinking of maybe selling her..

So how about you? Ever been pleasantly surprised? Deeply regretted buying somepony? If so, who was it?

Please tell me.

Cheers,

Luke

There's a few ponies I've felt didn't quite fit into my collection, but only after a few years, and none that I've truly regretted despite no longer liking them as much.

However I did buy a Peter Stone, Little Anthony, impulsively while I was very sick with the flu and almost immediately after unwrapping it I realised I didn't love it as much as I'd hoped (I nicknamed him Swiss Cheese lol). I ended up trading it for two Breyer within a month, don't love them either but I like them better at least.

I wouldn't say regret. I suppose my example would be years ago, when I was trying to get MOC versions of my childhood ponies (which I still am), I bought a MOC "Sugarberry" - ie on US card. And I had her for a good few years, but I could not accept her as the pony I grew up with, because the card was different and the name was wrong. So I ended up selling her maybe ten years ago. No idea where she is now, never regretted it.

A year or two ago I stumbled on a UK carded "Strawberry Fair" and somehow managed to win her for a very reasonable price. I guess the card didn't matter to the other bidders as much as it did to me (since the US carded one is quite cheap, her price on UK card didn't skyrocket).

So now I have the pony from my childhood memory, with the right card and the right name. And "Sugarberry" is out there somewhere being appreciated much more than I could have done.

I don't have a photo of my original to hand, though I do have some pictures of US carded ponies I later sold somewhere at home (on actual photos. Yes, that old, that they're actual processed photos O.O not digital ones). But I figure everyone knows the US card for this set, they're quite common - it's white.

And this is the more recent replacement :)

There are a couple of ponies I've got in lots that I don't feel fit with my collection, but none that I've purposefully bought. I always plan which ponies I'm going to buy reallly carefully for this reason

Never had any where I ended up liking them less, but I've definitely had instances of buying ponies I felt more neutral about and ended up absolutely adoring them. G3 Wysteria for example, I had seen her countless times through photos online and thought she was cute, and when I ended up getting her for a few bucks at the antique mall I totally fell in love with her color scheme seeing it in person. This has happened with a few ponies.

SS Magic Star, for a swap. I regretted not keeping her myself.

Baby Brothers. I don't like how they look in photos, as much as I love the Big Brothers, but when I got Baby Leaper for Christmas, I realized how adorable he was in person. I'd though my sister's Baby Paws was just an outlier because I was used to him.

Yeah, I don't care too much for the baby brother pose with hooves actually? Looks weird to me.
Shoreline I just got recently to complete my Sunshine Ponies (I gotta clean her then I'll make a brag post hehe) and I delayed getting her because she just reminded me too much of Merriweather. Now that I have her she is absolutely charming in her own way.

Taffeta, I love your MOC Strawberry Fair. :lovey: *grabby hands*

For me it was Beachball. In pictures she didn’t appeal to me but when I bought one for a friend I hard a hard time sending her to her new home. Last year I was able to get a Beachball. :)

My first Spanish pony... mind you, I love walking pose, but Posey had some serious Linda Blair issues... (loose head to neckline and just not proportionate at all.) You could gently move her and her head would spin. Only Nirvana I have ever parted with. Other than her, I like all my ponies, even though many are flawed.

Honestly, I'd have to say Sweet Scoops.  I bought her years ago, and actually for a reasonable price compared to now (I want to say I got her for $175).  I really didn't like her as much as I thought I would and sold her pretty quickly.  Didn't really regret it, except to think if I'd kept her a few years, I could've sold her for more. :)

Sometimes I have to see the pony in person before I’m like wow that’s a really pretty pony. I recently added Sweet Tooth and she wasn’t one that I specifically sought out. I happened to see her at a convention and really liked her color combination and of course the pose, too!  This has happened with quite a few that I under-appreciated until I saw them.

I've never really had a pony that I've liked less, but there have been a few that have grown on me :)

I found Forget Me Not at a thrift store and almost didn't buy her because she was wingless (what was I thinking, G1s are so rare where I live!) but I ended up getting her. At first, I didn't like her expression, but with her other flutters, she looks so pretty.

Baby Lickety Split was one of my first ponies when I started collecting. I found her at an antique mall, and, though her eyes creeped me out a little, she was a G1, so I got her :) She eventually grew on me and is now sporting a tutu on my shelf.

There have been G4s I've been super excited to buy, then been very disappointed with their quality upon opening :\ I remember this happened with my pearly Sunflower (her hair is atrocious!) and my reboot fashion style Fluttershy (I'm just sad at how thin and scarce her hair is).

For a pony that I wasn't keen on until I got... well recently I bought a lot for a specific pony. So the other ponies that came with her, I have never been that interested in. Well, imagine my surprise when I totally ended up falling in love with Medley! For some reason she's just never stood out to me in pictures online, but in real life, wow! I just adore her beautiful colours  and she has quickly become one of my favourites!

I like flocking :D It's bouncy and fuzzy and fun :D
But I never had the novelty of a SS as a kid. I imagine, given the puddle swimming some of my early ponies went through, any childhood SS pony I ever had would probably have ended more clumpy than fuzzy.

I admit I have had some really...dirty ones. But I still like them. They're fuzzy :D

I've had a lot of gaffes with ponies over the years, the main one being MGR Sparkler. I love her design, her colour scheme and such. I absolutely adore carousel horses - particularly ornate, old-fashioned ones - but that pose. It didn't bug me until I actually got her and just... no. Couldn't get past those awkward legs, so I had to sell her in the end. :/

I weirdly just found I do have an online photo of some of the MOC ponies I used to have but sold because they were US packaged or I was an idiot (mostly the first, not so much the second). THese are super old photos, actual pictures scanned in on an ancient scanner years ago, so forgive the quality please. They are from 2003 or earlier (cringe).

Sugarberry I mentioned earlier is in this picture:

I no longer have any of these MIP. I have the UK Strawberry Fair and I really regret selling the Italian boxed North Star. I have a US boxed one but the Italian box is cooler. But at that time I thought I only wanted UK things...

Italian Minty and CJ - also now rehomed :) I had a pretty bad time over Italian ponies around when I decided to make a break with dealing with variants and so I rehomed them. I hope they have nice homes now :)

Masquerade on the Dutch card - now gone :)

AJ and Cotton Candy, too - because of the cards. AJ I regret because she was a y3 one and I didn't have her loose. Now I do, though, with her card and stuff, so it's fine now. I know she had a good new home to go to :D

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Pink sweet talker - no longer with me. The purple one I still have. UK box...

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I don't even remember having Streaky O.o. That one must have gone pretty early I think. Curly Locks I probably should have kept as she was sold in that box in the UK. I also sold Shoreline and Squeezer. For some weird reason still have the other two. I think Tossles survived because she has a charm. I have no idea why Sugar Sweet stayed as her box is US, but I'm glad she did...

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

And finally...I no longer have Stardazzle. And yes, I do wish I kept her, because I won't ever afford another MIB DB and she was so cheap when I got her. But never mind  :) I also don't have the Sparkle baby any more, though the other 2 I kept.

So yeah. The moral of the story is that, I thought I didn't like non UK carded ponies. I sold a bunch. Most I don't miss. Some I do. So some I realised I liked more after I didn't have them any more. And some I really don't understand the reason I got them in the first place.

...And one I don't even remember owning O.o.

I have around 100 MIP ponies now and I keep thinking, maybe I should downsize, but I'm frightened of accidentally selling ones I'll later want back!

For ponies that I wasn't thrilled with after I bought them, do the Funko Vinyl figures count? If so, they're all really nice with the exception of Trixie. Thought she looked lovely until I flipped the figure over and discovered she has absolutely no tail under the cape.  I know you don't display them from the bottom and it shouldn't matter, but, it just really bugs me. The cape is sculpted to look like it's being draped over the tail but it's just floating over this empty gap between the pony body and the underside of the cape. Like there's almost enough room for something to be there but no... just a tail-less, bald rear.

Ponies I were surprised by after I bought them were the reboot G4 Pegasus ponies. I bought a Soarin and Songbird Serenade and I had no idea their wings were jointed.  I also like how some poses have the wings folded against the body.

I think my biggest realized disliked pony is my reproduction Moonstone since she's starting to yellow (because of the scented plastic?) and it's a huge yellow blotch. Even before the yellowing I just liked her better in pictures. irl she's just an awkward green/grey shade and her cutie mark was printed wonky on mine.

A pony I ended up liking more than I originally thought would definitely be the reproduction Confetti. She's just so stinkin' cute in person and I love how bright her mane and tail are  :inlove:

Oh yeah, Sweetheart Sisters as well! I don't want any more (except maybe the one that looks like a giraffe) but Dainty and Flowerburst accidentally became members of my herd because I got them in a lot and couldn't being myself to sell them. I dressed up Dainty in G3 clothes to look like a prom queen for a friend but couldn't bring myself to give her to my friend, either.

Reading this thread it seems like a lot of ponies don’t photograph well. XD  I’ve had the same experience though, with disliking a pony every time I saw a picture but then falling in love when I saw one in person. Banana Surprise is one of these for me. I find she always looks weird in pictures (and I can’t get a photo I’m satisfied with with my own), but in person she’s lovely.

Twinkle Eyed Ponies & Happy Tails Ponies

As a kid, I thought twinkle eyed ponies were a bit weird looking (never had any). As an adult collector, didn't have much interest in them when I'd see pictures online, still thought they were sort of strange looking with those gem eyes. Then I found 3 of them at a swap meet last year (Masquerade, Bright Eyes and Tic Tac Toe) in really nice shape and brought them home. They sort of grew on me and now I have 5 twinkle eyed ponies (added Locket and Sweet Stuff).

The happy tails ponies were because I told myself I didn't want any ponies with mechanisms inside because I viewed they would be potentially problematic. (yeah....about that decision, it was short lived I bought brush n' grows in the same purchase). But so anyways, I was standing at the swap meet digging through this cardboard box of G1's the merchant pulled out for me and there were three happy tails (Romper, Tabby and Squeezer). I had set them aside out of the box and was looking at other ponies in the box and I look sideways and my husband is standing there with Tabby making the tail swish around and making neighing sounds. It was adorable, so I bought all 3.

I've never really regretted a pony purchase (I'm very very selective on what I get), but on the happy side of the coin -

I bought some very sad So Softs to try deflocking, and I loved Angel so much I ended up keeping her.  I hadn't originally intended to, but how could I not love this aqua colored pony with her pretty fish symbols?  (I don't have anything against So Softs at all, and have a couple with flocking, but sometimes the flocking really just makes them so sad):

I never liked Secret Surprise ponies but I got one recently in a lot and wow...they are really cool! Their poses are unique and they stand a little taller than normal ponies.

So I now have two in my collection XD

I just realised that I have another example of this, albeit one that goes over a long span of time!

When I was around three years old, I had Cherries Jubilee. I can't remember for sure how I got her, or whether I was involved in choosing her, or if she was a present. But I had her. She was my third pony ever.

As a kid I really didn't like that pose. I also had Snowflake and felt the same about that. Snowflake had the prettier colours, though, and a sparkly symbol, so I think I liked her more. Also she was Pony Christmas one year in the stories so that helped :) Although I did have a 'friend' try to steal her, I was still glad when she was returned to my fold.

So I had these two ponies and I wasn't hugely in love with either of them. But they were part of my herd so obviously they stayed. They just tended to get the least fun jobs in games, or they'd go exploring more because I wasn't so attached to them. And Cherries Jubilee most of all. Although she had the song tape song and there was a Cherries Jubilee in the cartoon and she was in the comic, I still didn't totally connect.

When I was a kid I was obsessed with Magic Star. But after a while it dawned on me that she was also in that same pose. So I knew I had to do something about my pose-hate and my Cherries Jubilee hate. By this point (I was nine?) my Cherries Jubilee's hair was all over the place and resembled a cross between a loofah and bunny ears...which did nothing much to endear me. But at that age I was writing stories about ponies, so I thought I'd write about Magic Star and make Cherries Jubilee (CJ) her best friend, so I'd get to like her more.

...So fast forward to now.

The strategy worked. It worked so well that now I not only have my (now beloved) childhood CJ (whose hair is a bit hippyish now but no longer bunny ear loofah style), I also have an upgrade CJ, a symbol variation CJ from the US, the UK 1986 one with straight hair, the So Soft, a NC one, an Italian one, and two Mint on Card ones - UK 1985 and UK 1986. From really disliking this pony I now have what probably counts as an army.

All because I decided to write about her when I was nine.

I now have Magic Star too. Her pose doesn't bother me any more. In fact, weirdly enough, although I hated the pose so much as a kid, I love her in that pose much more than the SS. While she's pretty, I have a disconnect with the SS Magic Star - she's too pale because of the fur, and she just isn't 'right' to me, as I never grew up knowing about SS ponies. So now I guess my pose-hate is well and truly cured, thanks to CJ.

(And now I think Snowflake is beautiful, and have her MOC too. I'm really now proud that the UK made ponies like her which broke the rules and gave glitter symbols to ordinary earth ponies!)

Pfft. Someone should photograph her with Creamsicle. Also, was the "spot" pun intended?

I wasn't initially out to collect G3s. My first ones (Rainbow Flash and Scootaloo) were grabbed in a thrift store multibag with G1s. But they grew on me and I started seeking G3s on purpose. Even bought Scootaloo's scooter when I found it at thrift.

I'm pretty picky about my ponies. I seldom buy ponies I'm unsure of.

Other then the dreadful quality and awful anatomy of the G4s, they were just pretty enough that most stuck around.

I bought a Lyra Heartstrings once that went in the trash. Never had I opened up a toy that had such a poisonous chemical smell emanating from it. I would have felt guilty giving her to a kid. She had to go.

Magical Scenes Rainbowdash has dry, frizzy outta control hair. Especially her tail. If she had been a normal Dash and if I didn't like her gimmick, she would have gone in the charity bag upon opening her.

Mu daughter ended up with a few of my McDonald's ponies and blind bags.

I did buy a baity Sweet Stuff that eventually ended up with my daughter. Mane cut and age spots poor girl. We tried to do a partial restore, didn't match her pale sky blue, but she looks better and my daughter enjoys her.

I bought a North Star as she was a favorite character of mine and I'd always wanted one as a child.  When I got her, I was less enamored then I thought I'd be and my daughter ended up getting her. She wasn't thrilled at first, but grew to really like her and later got Baby North Star to go with her.

I have a weird Rainbow Dash with the poseable legs sitting on the top of my TV. She falls off whenever I try to adjust the cables though. I got her from a charity shop. I wouldn't normally buy such a pony, but her hair is sticking up all over the place and with her goofy expression it's hilarious. Right now she looks like she's trying to ride the TV, but usually she looks like she's examining my calendar...I'm sure if she had had nice neat hair I would have never taken her home ;)

CJ and Snowflake are amazing ponies - in complete agreement here. I also like Magic Star, though she has yet to come my way. I particularly like CJ as she has so many symbol variations in just her plain old HK version. I think that's pretty awesome.

I think when I discovered the UK had its own version of CJ, that was me sold on the pony for good :D Variations and especially UK versions are always winners with me too :D

I hope you get to add a Magic Star at some point. She has very vibrant colours in her movie star form.

I think my biggest realized disliked pony is my reproduction Moonstone since she's starting to yellow (because of the scented plastic?) and it's a huge yellow blotch.

you're kidding. ALREADY? I didn't know there were discoloration issues from the scented ones. Oh gosh....

A few years ago, I started really going through my collection to see what I had, and what I needed.  I discovered that I had some serious holes in the UK pony and accessory area, so I started to concentrate on that.  One set that never really did it for me was the Mummy pony set.  I liked the wee babies quite a bit, but the Mummy pony just freaked me out.  So I held off getting one.  Then I noticed that the ebay prices were starting to skyrocket, and I figured if I was going to do it, I better do it now before the price went up even more.  Right then someone posted a complete set, functional with an extra baby even, for trade.  I had what she wanted, so we made the trade.  Even if the Mummy pony was kind of scary, I was excited about the babies.

I got the package, unwrapped the Mummy pony, and tried her out.  After finally seeing this set in person, my reaction was WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE!?

I was in love!  It’s just so...unique!

As for regrets, most of those are ponies I overpaid for.  I did have one second set sea pony that I just did not like in person.  When I got Hightide, her head looked all weird to me.  I’m not sure if it was the mold, or if her head was just squished, but I sold her for cheap, and haven’t gotten another of that particular posed sea ponies since.

Being a missile launcher as well as a full time mum is definitely a selling point for the Surprise Twins gal.

I think she's weird as heck. But she's a lot of fun to mess around with.

This goes way back to when I was a child and the Dutch exclusives were released... By then, ponies had died out in stores over here, so my main source was fleamarkets.

But then that ad appeared in the Intertoys catalogue (there are images of the "Verzamel ons allemaal!" ad on the internet somewhere, that's the one), and I almost went insane! NEW PONIES!!! So of course I ended up getting them all eventually, but they didn't do the trick. They seemed fake, something was off about them, and they had weird colour schemes. To this day I still don't like them. Except Baby Cat, who was also the first Dutch pony I got because CATS, but I don't have her anymore. Really want her back, but not for the price she is going for now. :(

Yeah, for me, it’s usually the opposite. A pony seems “meh” until I see her in person then... *starry anime eyes*

I think the only one that is kind of “starry eyes to meh” would be Mimic, but it’s more to do with her pose than anything else. That pose just doesn’t work on Mimic, for me. i would love to have a custom Mimic in a walking pose, with a different hair color...

I bought a piggy minty a few years ago but I didn't fell in love with her when she arrived. I finally traded her last christmas for more ordinary Italian ponies that I like much better
