I found these little guys on Taobao (though something led me to think I was only getting Pinkie Pie, bonus I got them all instead!) They're about 2" tall vinyl figures who come in coloured eggs like they belong in a prize machine of some sort and you build them by attaching their manes and tails which come separate to their bodies! They're so strange looking but I'm really quite pleased (and amused) by them!
I asked my Taobao agent to get a few sets but they only had one, so I don't know if this was the only set or if the others were just sold but this is the first I've seen of them. Has anyone else seen or got them??

Those look like something that will either come in a kids meal for a restaurant or the coin machines.

Ah so Gatcha is a type of machine these come in? I see! I know the sort of machine, they have one at a pub near where I live but didnt know what it was called. How did I not think of frankenponies??!! Lol!

Now that you mention it, is it possible they could be made for the Japanese MLP franchise and that they could be testing them for other countries?

Haha yup, if you google "gashapon" you'll see that the whole idea of a capsule toy is called such, though it mainly refers to ones from Japan. TOMY, the makers of these G4 toys, spell it as "gacha(pon)" in the English-speaking world. :)
(FUN FACT - TOMY is actually Tomy Takara, and where have we seen Takara associated with ponies before? ;))
I hope they're an international release! (Judging from the pamphlet's French and Spanish translations, I'd assume they are - maybe Canada and Latin America, anyway, depending on the small parts laws :P)

Possible, but only if Funko is on good terms with Tomy/Takara and is doing a license/partnership.
Could it happen? Maybe. Funko needs more stuff, Tomy would like a U.S. distributor (do they have one or a presence already? Not sure), a possible "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" scenario.

Doubtful... these actually include Rarity and Applejack. Funko is utterly convinced (http://www.toywiz.com/funkomlp.html) that the show's main cast includes drama pony, Dr. Hooves and DJ Pon-3.
Do the heads rotate? It looks like the heads rotate.

I actually buy my son a bunch of the Super Mario TOMY Gacha capsules from Target. Another place that carries them is Five Below. But I can't go in that store and spend less than $50, (way too much cute stuff) so I stay away from there. So I'm sure they'll show up at Target as well as other places soon. They're blind packaged. There's a big box with a bunch of the round plastic capsules, which have a plastic wrapper around them to prevent them from being opened. But there are also small holes in the capsule and you can actually see enough inside to tell which figure is inside. I'm definitely going to get these once I see them. Rarity and Fluttershy are my favorites of them, so I might just get those two.

I forgot to say this, but I hope that when these show up in the egg, that they require assembly.
Assembling anime figures is my favorite part of ownership :3

Eraseez was supposed to have a line of buildable ponies, but these say vinyl.
And Funko was going to have those cupcake keepsake ponies, but I'm sure they'd be blind-boxed instead of capsules like most designer vinyl toys.

I must have a set of these. I have seen a few toys like this at my local Target but never really looked at them, mostly boy related. Must also check Five Below as ShortyBoo said they may be sold there as well. I really hope they do come to the US other wise I need to find them another way. Toywiz may stock them in some time, will have to check for them there too. Thanks Sarah-Bee for sharing your find.

They remind me of the Sonic the hedgehog gashapon figures that they had out last year!
(Gashapon (sp?) is the Japanese word for buildable figure)
I will be picking these up when I'm able to ^.^ Thanks for sharing, they're very cute!

I really really want these. Somehow the chubbiness and derp eyes make them actually pretty cute. Rainbow's hair is all wrong but Applejack has her hat :biggrin:

I got a Mario keyring in March which came in a similar capsule and with a similar leaflet. I got it in Toys R Us in the UK so maybe it'll come out here?

Those are cute, they reminded me of Kinder eggs too (sometimes the toy takes a little assembly to fit), since that's the reference I have. Never really encountered gashapon toys before, though I've heard I should look out for cute ones at game stores and the like now! I have a huge weakness for tiny toys, so I'll have to keep an eye out for more like these.

If you put your money on them being Kinder Surprise toys, you'd lose your money. These are Gatcha figures, made by the Japanese toy company Takara-Tomy. They're sold in regular stores, usually with the trading cards. I usually find them at Target. They come several of the plastic ball capsules to a big box and they're usually sold blind. But there's a few tiny holes in the capsule so you can see inside if you look carefully. Of course, the pony ones look to be more translucent than the Super Mario ones I've bought for my son, so maybe these won't be sold blind.

oh darn, i was wishing they were too, i can only wish they would make it over here, but we miss out on so much of the cool stuff. i will have to ask at my local toyworld, they are quite large, fingers crossed.

I saw them in Forbidden Planet yesterday but they were in blind bags (not eggs) and as AJ is the only one I would want I left them. I think they were selling them for £2.99 each.

They are £2.50 from Chimera in Nottingham, (comic shop) but they are blind bag style... weird arent they! I dont own any because I would only want AJ and Fluttershy.
