PBS Arthur Series to end after 25 years
« on: August 04, 2021, 03:11:27 PM »
Hi,

I know several of us mentioned in the TV guilty Pleasure thread that we enjoy Arthur.  I found out the other day that after the new episodes set to air this winter that Arthur will end and no longer be in production.  The older episodes are still my favorites although there are some newer episodes that I enjoy.  I was surprised it's been 25 years though.  I knew that the oldest episodes started in the late 90's but I didn't realize it had been on the air that long.

They said the main series will be ending but that Arthur will still be around and used for content, so I'm hopeful for something. Arthur is one of my favorite shows, and it's still very funny and holds up well! I'm sad to see it go but it is one of, if not, PBS kids longest running show. I heard we're supposed to get a special where all the kids go up to the next grade, I'm looking forward to that.

I have a couple of the Arthur books.  I was disappointed when the bookstore stopped carrying them.

I'm glad they are planning on keeping Arthur alive in some format.

Oh wow, it IS such a good show! But 25 years is a long run.  I think the episodes I liked best were kind of in the middle..
I imagine reruns will be around for awhile at least :)

When my kid was a toddler, her absolute favourite Arthur episode was one where they (was it his sister?) stuffed something down a toilet (Was it a diaper? Nappy?) and it flooded.

I think it was the episode where the kids decide to do babysitting & tell their parents to go away from the house to relax.

We had that particular scene on repeat for her - she thought it was the funniest thing in the world!

I used to watch Arthur a lot when I didn't have TV except for the channels you could find with an antenna. My favorite episode is one where they have a school project to create a TV show and they each have a scene in different styles of animation including Beavis & Butthead and Dr. Katz

A few years ago I recorded several episodes off PBS when I was afraid they might stop airing the older episodes .   One of my favorite episodes is the one where D.W. ate the green potato chip and the episode where Arthur started watching Love Ducks.

I love that moment in one episode where Kate changes the TV to a show that is supposed to be the Teletubbies and the characters are quoting Shakespeare  while Arthur says "Come on, not this show"

The Love Duck episode (technically "That's a Baby Show!") is truly immortal, thanks in no small part to its hilarious dialogue - the self-deprecatingly bizarre cold opening ("what is a cow doing in my room?") and the scene in the CD store are particular highlights.

It is so weird to think there won't have any new episodes after 2022. It did have a very good run, although I was in middle school when it started in 1996 I did watch it off and on and still do now and then. It's nice kids still have shows like it even if it will only be in reruns from now on.

I remember the book Arthur's Birthday being all the buzz when I was just starting school. While the tv show has been around 25 years it is amazing to think Arthur books themselves are now 45 years old too  :whoa:
