If it's not bad for us and doesn't produce more waste than it saves, then I'm all for it. It's good to cut down on landfills, and I've heard of worse sources for sweet flavorings.

"About 85% of vanillin is currently synthesised from chemicals derived from fossil fuels," according to the study.
https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2021/gc/d1gc00931a#!divAbstract

So currently unless you are spending the money to buy 100% authentic plant-derived vanilla (and you would know), the current version is a flavour of dinosaur juice.  Yum.

Well, they made it sound awful...

Two or three things come to mind. One is that all vanilla has to be hand-pollinated therefore it's way more expensive to produce the natural version than most of us can easily afford. If you look into how they get kids to hand pollinate the vanilla you might think twice about buying it. But I do love vanilla.

Petrochemicals are extremely versatile, basically carbon chains are the building blocks of life, so you can add things on to give different properties like side chains or chemical groups that produce scents, colours etc. The safety of some of these these artificial ingredients is debatable however. Personally I worry about artificial sweeteners like aspartame and things in soap like parabens.

Most perfumes, like all your big fashion brand or celeb perfumes are also made from petrochemicals. I buy soaps without parabens or artificial scents but can't give up my Burberry Touch perfume. Makes no sense, I know.

I'm all for this! Yeah, they made it sound terrible, total fearmongering, ugh. This will be great if it cuts back on waste, and it's not like most vanilla flavoring isn't already made of chemicals.

Nasty. There is this too. Scientists are able to create vanilla flavors out of a beaver’s anal secretions. Technically called castoreum (and technically secreted from a special gland right next to the anus), the thick, brownish goo smells rather pleasant even before processing. But although castoreum-based vanilla has been used in food and fragrances for decades, it’s rare you’ll find beaver-derived vanilla in any of your food today. This type is used primarily in fragrances for things like lotion and candle wax.
