What's wrong with baby Moondancer?
« on: January 08, 2021, 04:47:31 PM »
I got a baby moondancer from a friend who found her old ponies.
I scrubbed it with a magic eraser and dawn soap and gave a oxiclean bath.
But, the pony has these brown spots and a purple stain.

What are they? Is it contagious? How do I remove it?

I have a baby Glory with the exact same spots on her face. Maybe they're just odd age spots? If they are, then there's not much you can do about it unfortunately. Baby Moondancer burns easily in the sun from what I've heard, so you can't sunfade her. I could be wrong about them being age spots though.

Those are age spots, vinyl decay. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can really do about it. Some people have some success by poking a hole in the center of the dot and putting hydrogen peroxide on it. I've never tried that myself though.

Edit: It's not contagious.

Thank you! So, shes safe to display with my other ponies? I'll try the hydrogen peroxide trick with a needle.
Luckily all the spots are on her non display side
Also, is her hair faded? My adult Moondancer has dark red satin color hair.
Thanks again xx

That makes sense, thanks for letting me know :)

Does anyone know what color she turns to when getting "sun burnt"? If it'll make her a even color and hide the spots I might try it since she also has discoloring and damage to her paint and such

I have a Baby M that I think has been sunburned (got her secondhand from a lot so I'm not sure). It's pretty splotchy, definitely not even. I'll post a picture if I can find her.

Yeah, sun burnt ponies go shades of brown. If anything it will probably make the spots darker.

Try it at your own risk, but some people have had success removing cancer with hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can even prevent or remove sunburn! The most common method is a hydrogen peroxide soak, with the pony in a transparent container in the sun, but it has some drawbacks, including:
-Drying out the hair
-Killing mane glue
-Damaging Twinkle Eyes, Princess symbols, and loosening glitter symbols
-Causing vulnerable colors to fade
-Causing neon colors to bleed
-Pretty sure it's not good for flocking, either
A lot of this can be avoided by removing the hair and replacing it afterward, but that's an issue in and of itself.

Another method you can use is similar to a normal sunfade. Cover her hair with foil and the painted areas with thin, cheap acrylic paints, which will come off with rubbing alcohol when you're done (though I don't know how safe this is on glitter symbols). Instead of just placing her as-is, cover her surface with hydrogen peroxide gel or cream; I've seen a recipe for a homemade gel somewhere, and creams can be found in beauty stores as hair bleaching cream. You'll need to reapply it every twenty-four hours. This method is a bit safer, but it may be slower due to the lack of penetration.

Whatever method you use, though, you should keep track of it and disclose that it's been done should you decide to sell the pony. It also should be noted that spots have been known to return months after the treatment, but a temporary fix is better than no fix, right? There are still uncertainties when it comes to long-term side effects, but if the risk is worth it to you, then go for it!

Good luck!

I would try sun fading, but I'm worried her back will turn a different color than the front since only the back needs it.
Do you put the the cream all over or just on the spots?
Thank you for all the help :)

Got a picture of my Baby Moondancer.

It didn't show up as well in the photo as I had hoped, but there's brown speckling all along her side.

I have actually had good luck sun fading a Baby Moondancer. I wonder if she has more than one version, like Starshine, where some of them burn and some don't; I also have another really baity Baby M who is a consistent brown color all over, and I wonder if she got sun burned in a past life before she came to me. I haven't tried cleaning her up yet.

As for the brown spots, I don't think there's much you can do about them.

I'd apply it all over since she tends to burn, but on a pony known to fade well, applying to just the spots could save on cream. I'd stand her upright on a mirror to fade evenly; best case scenario, it brightens her white, which is something you'd want to see all over!

If you do cover her vinyl with foil and leave only the spots exposed, put a layer of paper towel underneath, as I've seen reports of foil discoloring ponies. If you do opt for this, though, be prepared for the spots being whiter than the rest of her!
