How to prevent Mashems ponies from decaying?
« on: December 18, 2020, 06:05:37 PM »
I have a small collection of mashem/fashems ponies which are made from rubber.
How do you safely store these so the rubber doesn't start decaying?
Is a little plastic container enough? What's the ideal conditions for them?

They do that? I need to check on mine; I've had her for two years now and haven't taken her out lately. I'll report back with her condition.

EDIT: I forgot that I had more than one! I thrifted four of them last year in a larger bag of ponies and they've been in the freezer bag they came in ever since. Mine that I've had from new is a little less pliable than she was when new, and her liquid has gone cloudy. The three thrifted ones that still had their capsules weren't any worse off, but they were all opaque, so I can't see the state of their liquid. The loose thrifted one is quite a bit stiffer, but still nice and squishy; her liquid doesn't seem to be cloudy. None of them are sticky anymore, and the loose one seems to have an almost powdery surface.

So it seems that the capsule does slow down aging, but doesn't prevent it entirely; you could try to put them in sandwich baggies if anything, but I'll leave mine as-is for now.

Here's my ACNH creator code. I thought I might share it, since I have quite a few pony designs.

I wish I knew how to keep them from getting just covered in cat hair...I don't think these are built with lastability in mind.

She looks like she's been put in time-out and isn't very happy about it!

Yeah, I'd say that'll work. The original capsules they came in have little holes in them, so if it's airtight, that's probably even better.

I don't know how you'd keep cat hair away from them on display (aside from baby-powdering them, which will affect their color and transparency), but I keep mine in the capsules (except for the loose one, who lives in a bag) and have never had any of my cats' hair stick to them. If you wash some similar toys with soapy water, the lint and stuff will come right off, so I guess you could try that to remove it. I haven't tried that personally, though!

I wash mine with water and soap but be careful - the colored parts can and will come off if you rub them
