Pre-G4 talking ponies- how many languages?
« on: October 30, 2020, 03:41:33 AM »
Okay, this is a little random. I just found myself wondering how many languages each talking pony came in. Here is (what I hope is) a complete list of pre-G4 ponies who speak/sing with words. A few other toys are listed as well. These toys would be a nightmare for a super-completionist. If there are any I don't have listed, let me know!

If I don't have languages listed, I've only seen them in English. If you have seen foreign ones, let me know!

G1:
Sweet Talkin' Ponies
Chatterbox and Talk-a-Lot (unnamed in the US) spoke when squeezed.
English- Says "I'm pretty!" "I love you" and "Comb my hair"
Spanish- Says three Spanish phrases... one is "Vamos a jugar" ("Let's go play")
German- Says "Kämmst du mein Haar?" ("Will you comb my hair?) and "Ich hab' dich lieb" ("I love you")

Honorable mention: Simba's Talky-Pony fakie
This one only comes in German, to my knowledge.
Says "Ich bin hübsch!" "Ich hab' dich lieb" and "Kämm meine Haare," which are literal translations of the English phrases!

G2:
Romantic Couples

Princesses Golden Dream and Flora speak and light up when Princes Blue Dream and Fauna "kiss" them on the cheek (magnets?)
All I know is that they say "I love you." They said it in English in a foreign language commercial (probably French), but they could just not have wanted to record it in the proper language.

G3:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

G3 & G3.5 So Softs
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
Foot button has six phrases ("StarSong sleepy!")

G3.5 Newborn Cheer Me Up Cheerilee
I HAVE seen this one speaking Polish! www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_DVH7LOJNE
I have her, but I don't know all her phrases or which button triggers them (she's been boxed up for over a year). She has a button on her foot and her heart, each with different phrases (there are a LOT compared to most others!) such as:
"Hi! I'm Cheerilee!" "Flowers are my favorite!" "I have a tummy ache"[/spoiler]

G3.5
Animated Storyteller Pinkie Pie
Her mouth moves as she talks. Retells (in first person!) the events of the Meet the Ponies segments for Pinkie Pie, Sweetie Belle, Cheerilee, and Scootaloo, in that order. Sings (in this order) the Core 7 theme (short version), Pinkie Pie Pop, and shortened versions of the following songs from Sing and Dance Pinkie Pie: Come Along, A Day Full of Cheer, Dancing with my Friends, and Make a New Friend Every Day. In addition to these features, she has other, random phrases she says before and after performing them. She may ask you your favorite food or favorite color, ask to be hugged, or inform you that everyone is a princess, to name a few. She also says "Bye-bye!" when she goes into sleep mode.

I might make a separate topic for G4, but not right now... Ten years of being quite popular in an era where talking toys are easy to make means that there are a LOT of them! That list doesn't seem to be getting bigger, though, as an Amazon reviewer reported a pan-European version of Flurry Heart who doesn't use words, and neither Oh My Giggles Pinkie Pie and the G4.5 kissy Celestia thing use words, either. Seems easier to make one version of a toy that you can sell worldwide rather than a toy that actually speaks... Oh well.
Here's my ACNH creator code. I thought I might share it, since I have quite a few pony designs.

This is such a fun topic!
I have the Polish cheer me up cheerilee, she’s so sweet, she says almost the exact translations of what the English one says, well, according to dodgy google translate! I can get a pic of her tag if you want it too  ^.^

I have definitely seen and heard a German speaking sing and dance pinkie

Make me better rarity
Channel is “hasbro Russia” so I assume the ad is too. There is also a Skywishes with what looks like Russian on her box (it’s blurry!) at the end. The pony didn’t say anything during the ad though, so maybe another case of just using sounds

Sleep and twinkle star song
Czech? Link:

The video poster imported for hasbro to Bulgaria. The pony doesn’t say any words in the ad and had lots of languages on her box at the end. She “la’s” along to twinkle twinkle little star, so maybe a lot of them did this instead of sing a translated version?

Good morning Sunshine edit!

I’ve seen a Swedish (I think) commercial for Good Morning Sunshine - I think she speaks words, but either way I don’t think my English one sounds the same as the short clips in the ad.

This one here seems to speak Czech (or at least the advert is, but the pony definitely speaks another language) according to dodgy google (I must apologise for my lack of language skills!)

Edit - Finnish too!

Polish maybe?

The pony speaks English, but the song and description is possibly Estonian?

I’ll keep searching, sometimes I go on a commercial marathon and come across some real cool stuff :) and I want to apologise again, I am not good at other languages, only a bit of Spanish, so I’m really sorry if any of them are incorrect!

I have some more info for you about the G1 Sweet Talkin' Ponies.
The Spanish talking ponies are named Charlatán (chatterbox) and Mimoso (cuddly), and their three phrases are "Peiname!" (comb me!), "Dame un besito" (give me a little kiss) and "Vamos a jugar!" (let's go play!).
The German talking ponies are named Goldstimmchen (little gold voice) and Goldkehlchen (little gold throat).

It's so interesting reading about all the G3 talking ponies! So many languages! G3 was available in an impressive array of countries, I have a G3 sticker book in Croatian :O

The commercials are a grand rabbit hole that has swallowed me up many a time. Here are some that I've found just by looking now:

Original So Soft Newborns in Brazilian Portuguese(?) with just sounds
www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIBTCc4uRIU
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZGT9NNNNYY

EON Entertainment
I'm convinced that they don't speak Bulgarian, but would like to see one that does!
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

It wouldn't surprise me if most releases just got English, French, Spanish, and German, and a version who makes sounds for everywhere else. Polish Cheerilee may point to that release having more languages, or that the Polish market was large enough to get their own releases.

And an honorable mention... German G4 Pinkie Pie Learns to Walk!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l_hSVbcB10
According to one of my crazy theories, this was originally a G3.5 release which was re-worked into a G4 pony when G4 began production. She has features that the G3/G3.5 Newborns had, such as faux fur hair, a bow on her head, and the dress. Although her voice isn't very close to either voice for Pinkie, it is, in my opinion, closer to G3/G3.5; in fact, it's really close to the G3.5 Animated Storyteller's voice!

Speaking of commercials, I have been trying to find the English version of Skywishes' commercial. I only remember it from TV when I was "too old for ponies," but I could swear that her voice was higher than the final toy. The only other thing I remember is mishearing "Skywishes LOVES to go bye-bye!" as "God, I just LOVE to go bye-bye!" Because of that, it made an impression on me, as I was constantly waiting for the commercial to come on so I could figure out what she REALLY said!

EDIT- Somehow I missed the German StarSong! I took German in high school and did well, though I am a bit rusty... That, combined with the video quality, make her difficult to understand, but it's mostly direct translations. They translated both "tired" ("I'm tired") and "sleepy ("StarSong sleepy!") as müde, which is kind of strange to me. I can't really understand half of the song. StarSong is my favorite So Soft, though, so I'm off to German eBay to find one! Hopefully shipping is kind to me... With Christmas shipping and COVID, though, she might take her sweet time. I'll take a video with hopefully better quality, and if not, subtitles!

Bumping this with new info!

I ordered a German StarSong, but I'm not expecting her until... the 12th? The latest eBay claimed she'd be here by is the 23rd, but I'm not optimistic. It will be worth it! She's in better condition than my English one. She was about $45ish with shipping... not bad for a foreign pony in good shape.

I found the UK commercial, and it sounds just like the toy... No US commercial yet, but I'm willing to accept a false memory here.

Anywho, here are some more commercials:
Rarity (Czech)- I think her name is "Booboo!" That may just be her set name, though. www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2B-AsycHNQ
Polish StarSong- Considering Polish Cheerilee, I'm optimistic about this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hJ9ZoLRA40
German Family Convertible and So Soft Pinkie/Rainbow- The DVD is stated to be included... Does this mean dubs of Once Upon a My Little Pony Time exist? I wonder if they used the same voice actors as the "normal" cartoon... So Soft Pinkie Pie says "I'm hungry," by the way. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROvTx5p8O-Y
I also found G4 walking Pinkie in Latin American Spanish, but I lost it. Oh well. She's the only G4 that keeps forcing her way into my search results, so I figures I'd put her here.

In the confirmed physical toy department, we have "languageless" StarSong! Yes, I'm coining a term for these. Unfortunately, I don't know where she came from- the channel claims to be from the UK. I assume that this is the version that ended up in Bulgaria, along with likely more places. Unfortunately, they only press the chest button, but it does give us some info. The "Lalalalala" is the same as the English toy, but with no "Goodnight!" afterward. The other song is an instrumental "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star!" I assume the lalas in the Bulgarian commercial were just to dub over the commercial, but there may be multiple languageless variants.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U7UnJUDrL0

So, here's a recap on what we've got so far:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

And I thought Bath Time Rainbow Dash was the only So Soft with variants! Two tail colors seems negligible in comparison to this!

Wow! There are so so many!
I tried both of my starsongs, neither says a word other than ‘la’. So they are also the language-less ones. They were bought in the U.K., and are likely from here originally. I always thought she said words, but turns out she doesn’t!

There are also fake versions of her without moving eyes!

Oooh, what do the other buttons do? I assume the mouth button triggers the same sucking sounds, but are there any "phrases" afterward? How many sounds are tied to the foot? Sorry, I'm just really curious!

I think the UK got the English one, but perhaps some store chains carried the languageless one. It does have English on the package.

I've seen the fakie with the same eyes as other So Softs. If I recall correctly, she was a My Little HORSE, but I know she was called Sleep & Twinkle HORSE. I don't think she lights up, because I specifically remember that bubble on the packaging that says that saying "Her can singing!" which is absolutely amazing. Another quirk she had was that the gold stitching on her wings were just straight lines instead of curly like on the real StarSong. I only saw one MIB stock photo on I think Alibaba, though. I wonder what she sounds like... Can her really singing?

Funny that you mention her, since I was actually looking for her with a reverse image search of the real one's stock image, but no dice. I did find info that I wanted to add here, though. It's all StarSong.

First of all, the languageless packaging. I found this both on a Czech site and a Dutch site. Note how the bubbles that normally have text stating her features have images instead, and that the three speech bubbles showing phrases have been reduced to one, which just says "lalala." The Dutch site has a commercial where the pony speaks, but the commercial shows the languageless package, as does the Czech commercial. This calls into question whether the Czech version was produced. This packaging is also shown in the Bulgarian commercials.

(Here's the Dutch commercial, by the way. https://media.s-bol.com/NL6JEAz1wnKK/video.mp4 )

Next, confirmation of a Spanish StarSong! Not sure which dialect she speaks, though. Her set name is "Sueños Brillantes" (something like "bright dreams." I only took one semester of Spanish.) Her outer box seems identical to the languageless release, which could be a shortcut they took to avoid designing a whole Spanish box.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K1FAaAR3uk

Here's another Czech site with a listing for StarSong. The text claims she speaks (according to Google Translate.) Notice that the packaging has the languageless outer box, but has text in the separate bubbles and three speech bubbles. Could the packaging be Czech? Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be legible. It could be one language's bubbles with the languageless outer box, not necessarily Czech. https://ostatni-hracky-pro-holky.hledejceny.cz/hasbro-my-little-pony-interaktivni-ponik-starsong/

And finally... Polish StarSong confirmation! No video, but Google Translate says that she sings in Polish, and that's good enough for me. Too bad she was no longer for sale, or else I'd have snapped her up- she's really cheap! I don't know if the seller would even ship her, though. it looks like a site for arranging meetups.
https://archiwum.allegro.pl/oferta/my-little-pony-baby-starsong-spiewa-po-polsku-i7241608676.html

I'm going to look some more. Reverse image search is proving useful!

EDIT: More packaging! Pic heavy, so I'll put it in a spoiler. All of these have the languageless outer box.

Wow! There are so many different packages! How awesome!

I filmed one of my language-less starsongs for you  ^.^ , and pressed each button a fair few times. I don’t think she says anything else beyond this x

Thank you! It's pretty much what I expected, but with a new laugh. They had to bulk it out somehow, I guess!

Alright, I found a legible close-up of the names on the box.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

You can't see all of them, and they appear to not match the stock image. I know that the French just says "interactive plush" on the stock image, so perhaps that box is a mock-up with placeholder names? There could also be two- only the stock image appears to have Greek, and only the close-up seems to have Russian. I'm pretty sure the box this came from was a Spanish one.

I did get some leads with this, though.
Here's a Dutch activity book which claims that she speaks Dutch. It also shows a Dutch Positively Pink pony & DVD set! The Toola-Roola puzzle (to find the two identical ponies) confused me until I realized there are two more on the next page! https://fdocuments.nl/document/doefun-boekje.html
And here's a Turkish commercial! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM4sHl_zjBQ

My efforts so far have been pretty StarSong-centric, so just imagine if I had the patience to do this with every pony! I can do that eventually, but I think I'm all done for today.

EDIT: I found myself looking for that fakie again... and found her! Here's a link to the image, since it's so big.
https://c.allegroimg.com/original/034806/95714c294aa295bf2a765707a04c
It's been a while since I've seen her. Her cutie mark is the butterfly from Skywishes' symbol! I found a few listings, but none were active. No video either. But she is out there somewhere!
She's a My Lovely Horses, so she's a cousin of this girl (linking again). I wonder what SHE sounds like as well! What does she think is so yummy? I love how her buttons were replaced with Scootaloo's Cutie Mark. She is not "animated," since she doesn't appear to have a mechanism.

I've been working to find more.

Languageless Cheer Me Up Cheerilee packaging

Apparently "try me" is pretty universal! Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time locating relevant results for each title, unlike StarSong. Legibility is an issue, but this is the best pic I could find.

Polish Cheer Me Up Cheerilee packaging

Languageless G4 Sweetie Belle- English G4 sweetie Belle has the same phrases in the same order as the G3 version, but lacks a mouth button (although there is no reason to change her mouth phrases). I feel that it's likely that the G3 languageless variant has the same phrases. "Sweetie Belle tired" was reduced to just "Sweetie Belle," "lalala" and the yawn were broken into two phrases, and a new kiss sound replaces "I love you, mommy" and "I'm sleepy," leaving her with the same number of phrases. I imagine that the only difference for Cheerilee is her name.

I'll be updating this post until this thread gets low, then making a new post. I know I am contributing, but impostor syndrome is hitting me hard here and I feel like a nuisance. If I am, please tell me!

EDIT: I found this while doing something else: Dutch G3.5 Pinkie Pie!

Bumping this with more! I'll be keeping pictures in spoilers from now on.

Foreign StarSong tush tag- potentially the languageless version. Found on a Bulgarian site, which mentioned only sound and "playing" a lullaby (according to Google Translate).
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Trilingual Skywishes packaging- She speaks English, so why bother?

French Skywishes packaging

Spanish Skywishes packaging- The little flower bubble Google Translates to "kicks" or "thrashes," which I guess works?
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Czech(?) Rarity- If you look closely, you can read "Boo Boo!" The URL isn't behaving with the image feature, so you'll need to triple click then copy/paste... It's still in a spoiler, though; it's a biggun!
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Portuguese Rarity
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Any videos of these if you have them would be appreciated.

EDIT: I forgot that I wanted to add this originally (too focused on that uncooperative Czech Rarity image). Here Is an in-depth look at how English StarSong works. When I get my German one, I'll write out her phrases, too. Please note that I don't know which cycles are first, nor do I know whether it starts at the beginning of one. You'll need to open the images in a new tab to see the whole thing. I really need to stop using Photobucket...
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

EDIT 2: Stumbled upon some Scootaloos! It seems that the dawn of the Core 7 era was when they started using "My Little Pony" worldwide instead of each language having its own name for the brand, but I don't know for sure.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

EDIT 3- Confirmation of Czech StarSong!

I can help for french g3/g3.5 so softs since i have a few. Good Morning Sunshine exists and speaks French, Sweet Steps does too. G3.5 Starsong speaks French, but Rarity doesn't say any sentence, just makes noises. I think Sing and Dance Pinkie speaks french here from the listings i've seen but i don't have her so i can't be sure. Also i have a so soft rainbow dash that came from Belgium but doesn't say anything, only generic sounds like my Rarity.

Thanks for the new info! Would you happen to know set names for GMS and Sweet Steps, or which box listed above StarSong came in? I would consider the French name on the French box the "official" French name... they're both silly, in my opinion. Either it's simply an interactive plush or the name is just a list of features!

Whew! I just went and finally made a Word document for this (I sure do love those!) and placed links for every one of these in action. I listed every one who had specific packaging for their language, since those are likely to speak that language. I'm also typing out the foreign names, which is all sorts of fun...
I can't decide whether I should break up the pairs (Pinkie/Rainbow, Cheer/Sweetie, Crawling Pinkie/Scoots) or if I should just assume every release had both... the former would be more accurate, but the latter is less work!

I'm not sure for Starsong and Sweet Steps (i'll see if i can find info on that though), but i know that Sunshine was just called "mon vrai poney" (my real pony) here.
Also one thing : our so softs here don't have any name written on their tags, even the ones that actually speak french.

While searching for a certain fakie, I managed to find listings for Good morning Sunshine, Skywishes, Rarity, and Cheer Me Up Cheerilee who all are claimed to speak Russian. Two of the listings had photos of the tags, which were probably used on all foreign releases.

EDIT- Russian StarSong! Only packaging and listings that say that she says words, but one listed her five foot phrases!

Here's my ACNH creator code. I thought I might share it, since I have quite a few pony designs.
