seller asking more for items when you respond to for sale post
« on: October 14, 2020, 09:03:36 AM »
Hi, I recently responded to a for sale post, as I was interested in a group of ponies they had listed. The seller responded that the group was mislabled and would actually cost $400 instead of $300.  At first I declined as it was too much for me justify spending. They countered with $350, but that was as low as they would go. I've asked them to send me pictures, but I'm kind of unsure at this point. They don't have any bad feedback, but on the other hand it's a lot of money. They haven't changed the price in their listing so it just feels a bit off to me.

Has anyone else ever had someone up the price when you responded to a sales post?

For such an amount I would want to see pictures first. It's not just about the name but also the condition that I want to see.

Yeah, I would wait for pictures. Also helps so you can make sure they didn't snag pics from another site

Doesn't sound very legitimate, I'd run away really fast... There are plenty of other sellers around here and on Facebook that have feedback that is reputable.

That's a lot of money to be asking with no pictures. O_o;

Honestly the moment I get bad vibes from something, I am not going to go through with it.

That was already an insane amount to ask without pictures.

Wait, I think that's illegal too. You can't ask for more beyond what you already priced them at. Definitely scam.

I would've walked away the moment they upped the price.

Especially with no information validating why so expensive. You'd expect someone to say, it's that expensive because it contains (x number of rare items/mint in package items/etc).

If that isn't happening, even if they have the ponies, they are abitrary pricing based on what they think pony is worth, rather than what they have for sale. In these cases less detail = more trouble.

To me that sounds like they were evaluating if there was any interest in the lot at all, and as soon as they knew that at least someone is interested, they increased the price. It could still be an error in pricing of course, but personally, I don't bother with listings without photos any more, as condition is very important to me.

If someone wants $400 for a lot I don't think it's too much to ask to add several detailed photos of the ponies in question to the listing. I don't understand why some sellers can't just add the photos to the listing.

They sound kind of shady if they aren't showing any pics and not answering questions about the merchandise, yet asking this kind of price. Also, why haven't they changed the price on the listing now that they realized their 'mistake'...it sounds like they're still trying to lure people in with the $300 and then doing a bait-and-switch. I'd stay away.

I would require them to handprint something weird on a piece of paper (like "fuzzy pickles") and include it in the photos.  Because what if they just steal someone's photographs off eBay?

And also, yeah, do not give them ANY money without seeing pics.

If you do buy from them, use Paypal and do NOT select the "Friends & Family" option.  If you use "Friends & Family" then you are not covered by Paypal's protection plan and can't get your money back if they scam you.
