Novel gimmick ideas
« on: September 24, 2020, 06:55:41 AM »
What are some fun gimmick ideas you'd like to see on ponies in the future, or wish had been done with ponies in the past?  Doesn't necessarily have to be practical!  Let your imagination roam.

One thing I've thought would be cool is for ponies to have different shapes under their hooves.  Like how the G3s had the logo under one foot, only it would be something simpler and unique - well maybe all the ponies in one set could share a shape or something.  Or it could match part of their butt design/pony print/hip mark.  Then kids could use them to leave fun shapes/footprints in sand, dirt, etc.  Shocking I know but as a child my ponies were played with outdoors often and it would have been really fun for me to have them leave a unique hoofprint.

Another idea I have would, I think, have worked well with G4.  Since their faces in the show are so expressive, I think it would be cool to make a pony where you could actually change her expression a bit.  Like poseable ears and some way to change the shape of the eyes and maybe open or close the mouth.  This would be for fashion style size or larger rather than the brushable size due to logistics.  This could be fun for kids who act out interpersonal scenes with their ponies, or who want to try drawing different expressions.

Share your ideas!

It would be difficult for me to think of gimmicks the brand hasn’t already done after almost 40 years. Maybe a button or twisting mechanism on the rump that can switch the marking of the pony to one of 2 or 3 options? Like a turnstile?

Just thought of another, And I don’t know how well it would work, but how about something like the water cuties, but the pony is clear and has those old school water hoop games in it, where you push a button that releases air  and try to get hoops around the posts? Two toys in one!

I would like to see...

a translucent pony.. with an ombre body (like it was dipped in different colors).

I'd like to see more things done with glow in the dark. Have we had a full GITD pony yet?

and while I'm iffy on things that require a battery, but something semi-opaque that glowed. I think there were mexican mcdonald ponies that did this, but it could be done better.

ETA:
I want color swirls like these die:

I have to admit I'm a sucker for the "gimmicks" ... I love glitter or anything glow in the dark !

LOVE the Hoofprint idea.

I'd like to see different textures, similar to So Soft, perhaps raised scales/feathers on some kind of hybrid ponies, or fur instead of traditional brushable hair.

All of this on a horsier gen.

A viewfinder set could be fun. Maybe a discreet button somewhere could be used, so the gimmick wouldn't ruin the mould.

I'd love to see a set of the checker/quilt patch concept that they showed photos of at the fair.

I'd love it if Glow n Shows made a reappearance

I want another set of Water Cuties.

I want proper Twinkle Eyes and So-Softs to return.

Neon Sea Ponies with multi-colored hair. And I mean Sea Ponies, not misnamed Merponies.

Glow in the Dark Sea Ponies.

Seasonal\Holidays need new members

Astrology ponies with GitD stars that make up the constellations.

A "metallic" colored set.

I'd love if the Flip n Flow set came back.

Something like the Glow n' Shows would be great! The Water Cuties were cute and all, but once the water evaporates or the confetti starts breaking down its not so fun...
More gradients are always fun.
A hoofstamp one would make a lot of sense since Hasbro also owns Play-Doh!
Maybe ones that change color in the sun again, but no pink.

When I was younger, I created a pegasus set that would have flapping wings like flutter ponies.  They all had bird symbols and names, like Robin and so on.  I will have to find the designs I drew, but if I remember correctly the button on the back to operate the wings was a little bird or flower.

Pretty much!

...Ok, so maybe not to that degree, but I remember the G2s had some hair changing ponies, that would be a start point.

Also, I guess I was reminded of the raggy doll line we had here (did the US get them? The show was definitely British) with...I think her name was Lucy, and her arms and legs came off. While that same idea was also used for Frankie Stein in MH (albeit the hands and legs on the toy in her case were not meant to come off, it's actually not hard to remove MH forearms and hands and sometimes necessary for safe outfit changing!).

So it would have to be thought out, but it's not impossible. In Lucy's case, the toy actually did come apart. That was her thing. The whole point of the raggy dolls was that they were all toys with some kind of production flaw, so having a doll that came apart was just one of those gimmicks. Albeit I admit that's not quite mix and match. But being able to add/remove horns and wings and change hair would be an option...

Yeah, but they were a bit tacky and they weren't brushable.

I'm not so much thinking about what I want to see on a pony, but what I think kids would have fun with.

Ah.
I thought the non brushable hair was one of the better things about them.

Yeah, I am strictly brushable only when it comes to any kind of pony concept.
