Restoration Question - How would you fix this?
« on: September 09, 2020, 07:31:40 PM »
Hello everyone!
I was doing some restoration on G1 Moondancer and ran into a bit of a predicament. On her right hoof there appears to be a spot where the vinyl has been eaten away by mold or some other thing, leaving a small area of thin plastic (see attached image).
I was going to just break the vinyl and fill it with apoxi sculpt, but I was also wondering if there was any other way to go about this?
Thank you so much for any advice! :frolic:

(Also if anyone can help me with uploading images that would be great lol)

Right click, copy-image-location, paste inside img tags!
Breaking the vinyl open would be not-an-excellent idea, unless you mean carefully popping her head off and putting the sculpt in from there. Is it eaten from the inside or outside?

I would be carefully taking the head off and insert the apoxi sculpt from there, yes. Also it is eaten from the inside

I think that's actually a manufacturing defect. I would probably leave it but if you're determined to fix it I think your idea would work.

I would honestly leave that as is, and not pop her open (unless there are clear signs of mold and/or rust inside). Looks, like BlackCurtains said, like a factory defect, perhaps an air bubble in the vinyl :)

I wouldnt try - it is a factory error and you're likely to cause more damage than repair

Personally, I wouldn't bother with that, it looks good enough to me.

Thanks for the advice everyone!
I will leave her be and if I ever decide to get rid of her in the future, I will be sure to list this thin spot as a factory issue/air bubble in the vinyl!!

I've seen this before and will confirm, it is a bubble in the plastic. Just easier to see on white-bodied ponies and clear ones...
