How does the cat litter method work?
« on: September 11, 2020, 06:02:15 AM »
Hello everyone,

Today, my 7 tales bright eyes arrived from ebay.
She is near mint, except for a smoke smell.

I wanted to try the cat litter method on her but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Do I put her in a bag with cat litter? Or separate? How long do I eave her in there?

What is the best method to clean her?

Cheers,

Luke

I think you have to kepp her fully immerged in cat litter in a closed container for a few days. Can someone confirm ?

My understanding of it is you just plop her in there until the smell goes away. Same thing with baking soda! Length of time depends on how strong the smoke smell is, how effective the litter is at absorbing, etc.
I removed smoke smell from my ponies by wrapping them in a vinegar-soaked paper towel and leaving them outside on a winter day. I brought them in the day after, rinsed and finished cleaning them and styling hair, and they've been sitting on my shelf ever since. The smell is 100% gone as far as I can tell. I think colder days are better at killing scents than hot days.

The type of kitty litter does matter.. I think it needs to be the clay non-clumping, non scented kind.

And according to google, it doesn't have to be touching the item.. but I imagine being in an enclosed space would help.

I did this for a She-ra horse.  I put the horse in an open baggie and then the baggie in a bigger plastic bag with cat litter in it and sealed it for a month.  It worked!

The reason why I used two baggies is that I didn’t want the cat litter to scratch up the horse. I think it could take the paint right off a pony.

i used baking soda for a couple of days and it worked then airing it out over time worked too.
maybe washing or soaking her with vinegar first and see if that works, might be way faster, one part vinegar, one part water.
