What is the safest way to store G1 ponies?
« on: February 27, 2024, 01:21:30 PM »
We're in the middle of reorganizing, and I can only rationalize keeping one pony shelf one display during this time. But I don't want the rest of my G1 collection (three more shelves' worth) to breakdown or be damaged. Any advice?

No plastic. The best thing is to use cardboard boxes. Banker boxes with lids work well. Wrap them in archival paper and place them standing up. Throw a couple silica gel packets in with them for moisture control. If they are going to be stored in a basement or garage and you're worried about bugs or mice, put the pony box into a slightly larger box and put a few drops of peppermint oil on tissue in the gap.

If you have a pony that's sticky already, don't put it with the rest of them. Pack it in its own box.

I had mine stored for a couple of years in cardboard boxes in an attic storage room. Each individual wrapped in tissuepaper and lots of silica gell bags with them.

I've had my G1 collection stored in closed plastic boxes for + 20 years and as far as I can tell they're still okay, but to be sure I've started buying organic cotton boxes (I think there's cardboard under the cotton fabric) for my G1 babies.

Silica packets, air flow, lack of sunlight, not too hot... however you choose to store them, those seem to be the major factors in keeping them in good condition.  YMMV depending on your climate.  I would not store them the same way if I lived in the Southern USA vs Canada!

I live in a humid but pretty cool climate. I'm not too worried about heat or sun, but it can get musty/moldy in our closets.
