If you could rename a pony...
« on: July 05, 2020, 05:06:50 PM »
Who would it be and why? Maybe you’re attached to the name you gave them as a kid before you knew their packaged name, maybe you think the family ponies need some individuality, or maybe the original doesn’t sit with you. Regardless, share what name you would change if you could, and what name you would go with!

I’ll get the touchy one out of the way; Gypsy is a pretty name if you don’t know much about the cultural context, but I’d maybe go with Bangles, Jangles, or just Tamborine. Heh, maybe Tamberine, as a mix of the instrument with Tangerine for her color.
Gender? I hardly know 'er!  | PM me about G1 custom or OOAK World's Smallest commissions! ;)

Pink Dreams-Someone called her Catnap and I agree that would be a better name.

Blushie-Shoulda just called her Bouquet and been done with it. I love her to bits, but her name is dumb.

Brights Brightly-Its such a stupid name. Bright Heart or Bright Cloud or Bright Day woulda been better.

I'd switch the Tropical Pony names around:
Pina Colada shoulda been Hula Hula
Tootie Tails shoulda been Pina Colada
Hula Hula shoulda been Sea Breeze
Sea Breeze shoulda had a different name.

Likewise with that one set of SHS:

Eve is a pretty name but for a night pony. Delphine would have been a nice name.

I like your ideas LaW!

I think the only one I'd change/actively call a different name is Baby Paws. I call him Baby Scottie.

And I suppose I like to switch twins Doodles & Noodles' names around- I call the blue one Doodles, & pink one Noodles.

Pina Colada is Hula Hula, LAW *innocent smile*

Catnap for PD is also a cute one. I always thought Wind Song was cuter than Wing Song too.

But aside consigning most of the US alternate/repeat names to oblivion, most of them I'd just leave as they are.

I don't have a problem with Gypsy's name, because I feel like her comic portrayal evidences it as a clunky attempt at eighties inclusivity, and not a slur. Although it may also be because she was named here and the word gypsy (at least here) also has the general meaning of 'free-spirited'.

...On that note though I expect Wigwam will come up, as he's more contentious.

G1 Woosie.  Her name always makes me picture a  pony that's had too much to drink. :drunk:

The US names for Sticky/Tuggles  and Sniffles/Toddles.  The UK names are fine but the US ones make it sound like the ponies are sick.

G1 glittery Sweetheart Sisters  Sunblossom and Twinkler's name should be switched.

I would also change Tootie Tails name.

I'm not good at picking out names so feel free to offer alternatives.

G1: Skippity-Doo. How about just Skipper?

G3: Tink-a-tink-a-too. How about Indigo Belle?

I also second the suggestions regarding Brights Brightly and Tootie Tails.

At least they did the Tropical Set better over there.

Ah yeah, the Glittery SHS >< What was going on there, Hasbro...

It's worse in the UK since we call Twinkler Moonshimmer. There isn't even a moon pony to put that name on. Sigh.

I hate it when ponies within a generation have duplicate names! The UK had the right idea by giving some of them original names, so I'd want those to be used worldwide in those cases.

Other names that would warrant changing:
Sundazzle and Princess Sunbeam
SS Twilight-Candlelight would be a pretty name
TAF Yum Yum
Tropical and Baby Seabreeze
Prom Queen Cha Cha
DNW Cuddles and Snookums
SHS Twinkler
MGR Sparkler
Winger Sky Dancer
Baby Sweet Stuff
TAF Fifi and Buttons
Any baby sea pony that looks nothing like the adult they share a name with
Although TE Sky Rocket was the original, I think the name works better with the Sparkle version, so I'd change her name.

Unrelated, but
I get Brilliant Blossoms and Brilliant Bloom mixed up all the time. One of them needs a more unique (and less long) name

Also 1987 Hasbro, let's go back to the drawing board with every year 6 newborn twins (except for Sandcastle and Shovels. Those are fine). You can do better than "Sticky and Sniffles" or "Puddles and Peeks".

A certain wall-eyed pegasus. Or possibly a certain unfortunately-named fashion pony.

*applauds*

(entirely no bias here) xD.

Tropical "Sea Breeze" also already has a Uk alternative name. We called her Surfing Days. The unicorn here is Sailaway, the earth with the palm trees is (more logically) Hula Hula and the yellow one is Summer Heatwave.

The UK had names for those two DnW babies too. The unicorn is Baby Wellyboot and the other is Baby Rainflower.

SHS Twinkler is Moonshimmer in the UK.

We did have the repeat names here though for some, like Sky Rocket, Skydancer. We didn't get TAF Buttons or SS Fifi, and "Sweet Stuff" is Sweetie here so even if Baby SS was sold here, it would still be a new name.

There's also Half Note/Baby Half Note which bothers me because they're so obv. not related. I'd like Halfnote to be something else. A "half note" is a minim, right? Minim, Quaver, Semibreve...anything that isn't a note that isn't sure if it is or it isn't.

...Most of the other repeats you list the UK didn't have and thus couldn't rename. I really like Candlelight for Twilight.

...Would stick with the US "Molasses" though. It's the one and only time that the US didn't repeat a name and the UK did.

My main issue with names is double names.
We don't need two cuddles or three sea breeze's.

I would also change the names sticky and sniffles. There's already another sniffles and sticky is just such a sad name.

I'll have to think what I'd call them - it's challenging enough thinking of names for my own ponies, but the first ones I think of are the ones who essentially aren't even named, and/or just have basic names to describe what they are.

I mean ponies like "Miss Painter" and "Miss Teacher" - spend a whole day on them, did you Hasbro?

I don't mind duplicate names too much, when naming my ponies I've found I've used names of real ponies without noticing, but if I like the name, I just stick with it, and make it a different pony.  Pretty much what Hasbro themselves did.

I will confess to being a brony, but I assure you that the things you may not like about them do not apply to me, I mostly keep the fandom name due to nostaligia, but I do genuinely love MLP as a whole, not just FIM, and not just the popularity of FIM - I genuinely love the show (and all the others)
