Show me glitter symbol restores?
« on: April 24, 2020, 06:02:30 PM »
I'm working on fixing up some glitter symbols and it's made me want to see other people's efforts at re-glittering.  ^.^

I'll start:

Wish they didn't stick out so much, but I think that's unavoidable with glitter paint. Still pretty happy with how they turned out!

Okay now mine look like crap...lol.
They were made two years ago with glue and regular glitter.

I only made one, it was Sunbeam. Unfortunately, I had a poor choice of a material, it was nail polish. The result was really good, I spent a long time getting the symbol just right but I was afraid it would damage her in the long run so I removed it.

Later, I felt like she wasn't very right. In real life, she was way more yellowed and sad-looking, so I decided to customize her and I love her more that way. I got another Sunbeam, she's more blue but without a tail, but she's the one being preserved.
Found a close-up picture. You can better notice those yellowed stripes on her. It even had some depth or something. She wasn't pristine at all.

I used gold paint for Sunbeam's symbol.

These look great, what technique/materials did you use? I have a few ponies (including these same two girls!) who need new glitter symbols and I've been afraid to try it.

This is really neat! I love the eyes and symbol.

Thanks! I used Folkart Extreme Glitter paint, but essentially 'rinsed' the acrylic/glue out of it (mix water into some paint, stir, remove excess water with paper towel, repeat until water is clear) and then added a bit of Triple Thick to make a very concentrated glitter paint that I think lends itself better to painting glitter symbols.
It would definitely be easier to just mix glitter into some Triple Thick, but as far as I can tell the Folkart glitter exactly matches the glitter in G1 symbols both in size and color, and (except for the gold) has about the right amount of silver mixed in already. I just didn't want to go through the effort of hunting down loose glitter that matched and also having to work with loose glitter in the first place. :,D

There were also times where I very carefully scraped away any excess paint with an X-acto knife to make the margins neater (mostly on Moondancer's stars). It helps to dab a bit of rubbing alcohol on the area you're working on before doing this to soften it a little.

Thank you for sharing that...I'll give it a try on my girls! Yours look incredible, and I doubt I have the steady hand to make mine look as good, but this is a good place to start!

I've restored glitter symbols with plastizap and micro glitter for nails, but I don't know of the right solvent for the glue and ruined two brushes doing it. The result was good (I applied glue then glitter through a tea strainer) but I don't have any picures unfortunately.

Wow I really wasn't expecting to get so many compliments on my restores xD; Thanks everyone!

Would still love to see restorations from other people as well! Even if you think it's bad; working with glitter isn't always easy, after all  :P
