Side question:  do the straws not melt in the boiling water?

I have not had anything melt.  I do try to keep an eye that the pony does not touch the pot when I'm dipping.  I dunk them for a few seconds in boiling water, then dip them in cold water for a moment, then repeat at least once to help it set.  I don't expose the straws to extreme heat for very long.

Thanks for answering, it's good knowledge to hear first hand and they turned out great!
I always figured the straw would melt into the hair and I'd be stuck with one helluva mess!  Then again, if it was ever going to happen for the first time, it would be to me  >_<
