I even wondered for awhile if she was a fakie but she looks similar to the pony posted so maybe not.

Well, the comic actually bothered to give them individual personalities, and didn't go down the stereotypical route of spoiled little princesses.

But I also feel like that about many (not all) of the animation personalities compared to the comics (which were sometimes more accurate to backcards including the US backcard ideas). The only real exception is Wind Whistler, who is much better in the animation, (and Paradise, who didn't exist in the Uk comics so barely counts )

Most of them had different characterizations in the cartoon as well, at least as much as four short episodes allowed to: Starburts was the smartass, Primrose was the ditz, Tiffany was the girly one etc. And the whole story arc was about them learning not to be spoiled princesses, which I think was a nice lesson for kids.

Meh, not really. They're all basically the same whiny brat personality. Whereas in the comics you have strong distinction between them and their personalities, abilities, etc. So you have Pearl and her wishing pearls, her sensitive personality and her empathic nature...you have Sapphire, the wise oldest princess who they go to for advice...Ruby who is restless, impatient and a perfectionist. Aquamarine who is a daydreamer. Amethyst who is clumsy and wants to help people but generally manages to mess it up (despite having the best of intentions). And Amber, who I guess is the active go-getter problem solver who always is up for a challenge.

In the comics they also don't only show up in one story, nor always altogether, but sometimes together and sometimes in their own stories with other ponies, across many stories for a couple of years or maybe longer.

It's just not a comparison for me. Telling kids not to be spoiled princesses kind of falls flat when they actually are princesses. And they never appear again, so we never get to see the fruits of their reformation beyond the end of the episode.

I agree!
By the end they were far less self centered.
I know they're portrayed differently in the comics but you were referring to TV show Tiffany.

Just because they were whiny brats doesn't mean they were all bratty in the same way. Even as a kid I could see differences between them.

I can see differences too, but they're all variations on the same theme and apparently obsessed with being Queen which seemed pretty pointless to me and still does now as an adult, since Majesty was the 'Queen' pony anyway.

I always adored the princesses as a kid, and when I saw that episode I remember being quite upset that they had 'ruined' the princesses by making them all spoiled brats. I guess that sense has stuck with me, and I stand by it. The comics did it better. But there are a lot of animated personalities that just don't work for me, as I said before. I don't actually know what the US backcard stories say for the princesses, but they were one of the most defined sets character-wise in the comics, which for me makes the animated episode a disappointment.

@Fizzerknight, I'm not sure what your point is since SpacePinto jumped on my post originally and that was about "Pearl".

@Ponybookworm, ah, awesome! I am not sure if I even have that MLP&F comic, I am missing a lot of those as I never had many as a kid. I remember the mackerel cloud story with Aquamarine though, on whichever comic it was, so a cloud makes sense. Also that she and Milky Way used to hang out together for some reason, but I can't remember precisely what they had in common xD.
