China Sundance instead of NC Sundance?
« on: February 27, 2020, 06:14:51 AM »
Ok, I thought I had it wrong but I double checked and the hooves really have made in China underneath it. The regular version of Sundance is normally the no-country version. I have one with China though. Is this a misprint or something like that?

China, and not Hong Kong?

You may have just opened a whole new can of worms with this pony, since there's a theory (circumstantial) that the NC Sundances may have been made in China and not Spain.

Can you share pictures? I am curious because I know that the Chinese Majesties and Brush & Grows more often show up in various parts of the continent...

Definitely China! I double checked.

I trust you! And even keener for pictures! Because I have this nagging feeling that the UK box says made in China on it. I'm going to go and check..I have the 1986 one, not the 1987 one, and it should be accessible...

Yes, her UK 1986 box says 'Made in China'. That box is usually sold with the NC one, hence all the theorising...but I've not heard of one with China actually stamped on the hoof before (maybe PKW or some of the Nirvana people have).

Would really love to see pics if and when you get a chance :D just to see whether she looks more like the HK ones or the NC ones (or neither).

Huh, weird, NC Sundance are so common in my country, I never thought for a second they would be from Spain. They were definitely from China or HK, in my opinion. I wasn't expecting there would be such debate. ^^'
All of my Sundance are NC, so, no "Made in China" to be seen. Though, their hooves look a bit odd, like if their markings were rubbed off. So, maybe yours is just a rare survivor of this practice ?
I'm still clueless as to why some ponies have their markings rubbed off. I have a Firerfly or two with the same issue, but a third has not.

The thing is that a lot of NC ponies in Europe can be traced to Spain, but I tend to agree with you, RoseNoire. I've never felt that Sundance was one of those to be made in Spain, and her box suggests she wasn't either...just that the NC Sundance (which is also the normal default in the UK) was not made in HK. I also think that there might be something in the hooves and how it's been wiped or maybe added by a factory at some point. Some NC ponies (mostly Family ones, not Sundance) have faint traces of a HK print but it's the first time I've seen a Chinese marked Sundance.

Nella, thank you for the pictures! Her hooves are interesting indeed! Did you get her over there or was she an import?

Also, her hair looks to be more the same shade as the NC one, though it's hard to be 100% sure. It's really neat to know she exists.

Also, the Pat pending gets taken off hooves in some moulds, which explains why some have things removed, depending where/when they were made, but that's a slightly different discussion.

She definitely looks like the NC version. I thought I made a typo in my salesthread so I double checked. I'm amazed she's a rare one :). Now I definitely need to unfrizz her hair lol.

I bought her in The Netherlands but not sure where her previous owner bought her.

Taffeta, does NC and HK different hair to each other?

Yes...but the problem is that NC ponies can differ from one another as well, in either having very straight hair or very curly hair, for example. It's hard to explain but the colour of the NC one's hair is often a slightly duller pink than the HK ones, at least the ones I've seen. I've had way more NC ones here than HK ones, though, so that comparison is a little subjective.

What we know as well is that the release of the NC one is a bit confusing. She seems to have been sold all over Europe, but in most places she comes with a Megan dressed up like the US version. Here in the UK we had her over two years, which may explain why there are some differences (but one with unique accessories, one wearing Country Jamboree M&S wear). I have no idea if there is a way to tell which ones came from the European releases, the UK 1986 release and the 1987 release specifically. We've never seen a UK set MIB from 1987 either.

I also have a NC one with no symbols and very curly hair - I can't see evidence she ever had a symbol, though I kept her as a curiosity rather than anything else.

^^ the two ponies pictured at the top of this page are both NC Sundances, so that should give an idea as to the problem...

http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook2/meganandsundance2.htm

And here in more detail.

So to me Nella's Chinese one looks like she fits into that family more than she does with the HK ones...but without having a whole bunch of them to compare it's hard to be 100%.

European countries, including the UK, seem to mostly have NC ones of unclear origin (but I think Chinese, not Spanish xD) and North America mostly has Hong Kong Sundances. All the ones I have ever found in the UK - which is probably at least a hundred - have been NC, though they can have variations which may suggest more than one factory or may be to do with batches.

The fact Nella obtained this on the continent makes me think there are probably more in Europe with China on the hoof - but nobody's noticed one till now. It's like Chinese Majesty = she's also more common on the continent (albeit not common) but it's not something you necessarily look for...
