G3 Toola-Roola? Pony with a makeover or same-name syndrome?
« on: February 23, 2020, 08:44:17 PM »
I never really thought about her much until I actually got one.  And it suddenly occurred to me that she's probably two different ponies with the same name, rather then one with a complete overhaul. Like Baby Gusty (BBE)and Baby Gusty (Sparkle Baby)for example.

One is pink with blue/white/purple hair, and her symbol is 3 Celtic spirals and hearts. She likes to do cartwheels.

One is pink with pink/orange/blue/yellow hair and a paintbrush symbol and swirls. She's an artist.

What do you guys think?

I always thought it was same name syndrome! They just seem far too different to be the same pony with an overhaul.

I like both of them, but only have the artist version of her, with the pallet and painted on paint splotches. I got her because I am an artist as well! So I am biased to favor her more. But I do like the other one, too! I'll have to get her someday. If I ever get the other one I bet I'd call her Roola-Toola. Lol!

Yeah I always thought of them as two separate ponies with the same name- they're just too different!

I think of them as different ponies as well, the designs and concepts are too different for them to be the same character. I mean G1 had a few "Cuddles" in it so it wouldn't be the first time we got more than one pony with the same name in the same generation.

I think of them as two ponies as well. Hasbro has previous even in G3 with recycling names. Yes, looking at you, Mittens II and Snowel II.

Yeah, I think they just reused the name - that tended to happen even within the same generations, as I'm sure most of you are aware (there's at least three G1 Twilights, for example.)
I will confess to being a brony, but I assure you that the things you may not like about them do not apply to me, I mostly keep the fandom name due to nostaligia, but I do genuinely love MLP as a whole, not just FIM, and not just the popularity of FIM - I genuinely love the show (and all the others)

I think there are two G1 Twilights? The unicorn and the SS. I can't think of any others.

But there are (in the US in particular) several examples of recycled names in G1. Fewer in the UK - we either didn't get all the ponies with that name, or changed the name. The only exception is Gingerbread/Molasses who was sold here under both names, just to be confusing. One pony with two names = the exact reverse of this situation, where two ponies have one name ;)

The third Twilight might have had a "surname" or whatever, or it could be a pony whose name changed.  Hang on, I'll check...

Yeah, you're right - there's only two G1 Twilights.  I had it in my mind that there was a "Twilight Something" among the Tropical Ponies, but there isn't one - I even specifically imagined her as an orange pony for some reason.

I think I confused myself partly by knowing that there are a fair few Twilights (for the whole franchise - at least five) and partly by misremembering a connection between Fairy Tails and the Tropical Ponies; I remembered that most of the Tropical Fairy Tails shared their names with the Tropical Ponies, and I know that there's a (non-Tropical) Fair Tail named Twilight Tails, so maybe they were "stored in the same place" in my memory so I misremembered there being a "Twilight" in the Tropical Ponies?

Memory is weird.

I always thought it was the same pony as a child, just rebooted or something with the g3.5 era they started going for in 2007. I still to this day think of it as the same pony, since based off the story books she's also an artist and they do have similar personalities.

To me, they are different ponies but they happen to have the same name.
Fun fact, the first Toola Roola's name in French is Tournicoti.  ^.^ (And the second, the artist, remains Toola Roola in French)

It doesn't mean anything specific, but I strongly think it's a reference to a French 60's kid show called The Magic Roundabout, where  the expression "Tournicoti-tournicoton"(still doesn't mean anything, but implies the idea of turning and/or swirling) seems to show up a lot. I guess her symbol in particular inspired the translators.

In the word "Tournicoti", you have kind of the word "Tourner", which means "to turn". And there's also the expression "Avoir le tourni", which means getting lightheaded. (You kow, when you feel like your room turns around your when you get up too fast from your seat.)
