Caring for and storing a scented pony with other ponies?
« on: December 18, 2019, 12:32:52 PM »
So I've just bought a caramel crunch (my very first candy cane pony, one of my favourite sets!  )

she hasn't arrived yet obviously, but my concern is what effect her scent may have on the rest of my herd. You see, I don't have a pony room, or shelves, I have a cabinet with sliding glass doors, and I remember hearing somewhere that scented ponies are prone to discolouration, and it can spread to others, especially in a contained area.

So is there any truth to this? Can she live safely with the rest of the herd, or is it better to find her somewhere else to live? In terms of cleaning/care, is there anything I should do differently for a scented pony? (Like not using oxyclean or magic erasers, for example)

Sorry if these are silly questions, and thank you for your help/advice in advance!

Can't speak on if the scent will cause adverse reactions, but it is ok to use magic erasers and such on scented ponies as long as there are no other reasons you wouldn't want to use the eraser/chemical. If you want to preserve the scent, you might want to keep her in a plastic bag for a bit, but this will raise the chance of discoloring her.

I've been wondering this myself. I say maybe store scenteds separately from the rest of the group?

No harsh chemicals when cleaning for sure. Can't speak for enclosed spaces as all my scented critters roam freely on media ahelves... haven't noticed that they make others smell though...

So caramel crunch has arrived, and much earlier than I expected.

Yeeeah, a spa session is seriously in order  she has some pretty bad problems, but I can fix them all.

Anyway, she only very faintly has her original smell, and only around her neck for some reason. I'm hoping that it's safe for her to live with the herd if her smell is almost all gone? I'll post a restored picture of her tomorrow!

My scented ponies have lived among my other ponies in a closed pony room for years with no adverse effects. Same general rules apply though: no ponies touching each other (to avoid dye transfer), try to keep the humidity and light exposure under control, etc.

I fully agree.
Haven't noticed any discoloration spreading.
Mine live together with the others, in their cabinets, in their own room with UV-protection on the window.

I didn't know that keeping pony in plastic bag will raise the chance of discoloration? Is this happen to ALL ponies not only the scented one? I stored all my mine in plastic bags as I do not have yet a shelve ready spaces O_O?!?!

In general, I'd advise against keeping ponies in plastic bags or containers. There are reports of G3 ponies becoming sticky after being stored in plastic containers, and it's very possible that the plastics are off-gassing and causing plasticizer leakage. In general it's better to keep them loose or with archival paper protecting them from rubbing against each other. This goes for all scents of ponies.

There's caramel crunch all cleaned up! (Not so good quality photo taken with potato camera, but still) She's now living happily in the cabinet with the rest of the herd. Thanks for all the advice!
