removing tinsel from g3 ponies.
« on: October 18, 2019, 02:32:22 PM »
Hello everyone,

I recently got into g3 ponies. I now have triple treat, pinkie pie with her name on her leg and merriweather.
The problem is that both pinkie and merriweather have tinsel in their hair.
The tinsel is still good but I really want to remove it because I don't like it.

Is this the right thing to do, or would I destroy precious g3 ponies?

I know they are my own ponies and I can do whatever I want but I like some opinions before I might make a mistake.

Anyone else ever removed tinsel?

I would love to hear from you all.

Cheers,

Luke

Hi,

I did it once to one of my G3 pony which is Toola-Roola Favorite Friend Wave 4. Tinsel really bothers me and at last I decided to remove all of the tinsel hairs from her. Its time consuming, once you get started, you will need a couple of hours, for me the hardest part is the part near the roots, which didn't completely came off, I use a tweezer to pull those little short ones off.

I did it just because I don't want it, but not sure how this will sounds to other collectors. As long as she will be in your collection or whenever you wanna sell her just be sure to mention this issue I think that is good enough.

Cheers,
Fah

They’re all pretty common G3s (especially Pinkie Pie). Honestly with a few exceptions (some euro exclusives, the dreaded Caribbean Delight and Beach Belle) most store sold G3s run under $10 so modding any of them would be a non-issue. Don’t have experience detinseling, I’m afraid.

thanks for your answers. Good to know that g3's are so common.
I think I'll remove the tinsel because it sucks.

I think they look much better without the tinsel! :D

Now the question is, how to do it effectively? I never figured that one out. A few of mine, I just pulled them out, with as sharp a tug as I could. But even then there were a few tiny pieces left close to the plugs. Not sure how to get them all off completely cleanly.

Nail clippers ;) Works like a charm!

I say go ahead and de tinsel if they'll be staying in your collection.

It's tedious, but I've done it before.  G3 tinsel is so awful (except the colored tinsel on Waterfire etc, that stuff is great.)

It's your pony so do want you want but I personally would try to trade for one with bad tinsel. Just because they are common doesn't mean anything if most of them have rat's nest tinsel.

You tinsel haters elude me. :P I love tinsel, it really adds pop to an otherwise boring design.
Good luck on your detinsel quest! I think it would be best to clip close to the root and then pull out rather than pulling right away. If it can stand up to me combing it out, I'd imagine it'd just hurt your hands after a while.
Does it take longer to detinsel or to just reroot the hair, I wonder?

I used to de-tinsel but I just now let things be. I think its very tedious to pluck them all out. I do agree they look plain without any tinsel.

I have only done this to one G3, and I used nail scissors. (very sharp and very small!) it worked so well and didn't take me too long! go for it!

I would do the same.
I used to detinsel my g3s while they were still current, but somewhere we have to stop saying 'oh this pony is so common, it doesn't matter'. g3s aren't being made anymore, and nice tinsel isn't too common. If yours have nice tinsel, I would really try and trade them for poor tinsel ponies.
(I've also regretted detinseling some, as they do look rather plain without it imo. i do get you with tinsel being hard to manage tho!)

I've only ever used tweezers to detinsel, and it worked pretty well. I can imagine nail clippers/scissors work better though.

Same. I have grown to love it on G3s. Plus, with a bit of regular hair wax the tinsel can be tamed and it can get washed out again without doing any damage to the tinsel or pony hair.

I have a tinsely girl on display with hair gel added to the tinsel to keep it down and she just sparkles!
