Frizzy hair - Before and After
« on: October 05, 2019, 04:03:12 PM »
Finally got a curling iron. Started off on a "decent condition" Applejack (Pindot/Smooze everywhere, both inside and out).

Finished her tail earlier, her head's currently on a windowsill, trying to sunfade some marks away.

Not perfect, but much better than before. Still bits of frizz, least it's a lot smoother and shinier.

Next up: a pair of pink ponies

Yeah, not very pink anymore. Bought her used years ago when the MLP fair came to Nashville TN. Dunno how the previous owner handled/stored her, but she's been sitting on the back of my G4 Pinkie shelf for years with no direct exposure to sunlight. Haven't really looked close at her until today.

Back on the topic of frizz, I've done about half of Valenshy's tail. Slick and shiny on the way down, though it's still frizzy at the last inch or so. I don't want to cut if off, since I like to preserve as much as the pony as possible. And I'd rather not turn the curling iron on too high for fear of melting the hair.

How would y'all  handle this situation? Wondering if I should've gotten a flatter hair tool, though I could use a clothes iron.

A vinegar rinse will make the hair even shinier.

As for the frizz at the ends, I'd try either an anti static product (static guard) or maybe Downy.

The iron helped, kinda. Smoother somewhat, though there's still some frizz on the way down. And the ends of the mane/tail are still a mess. If I can find fabric softener laying around (Someone a few posts above mentioned Downy) I'll try that.

Turns out all Pale Pinkie needed was a bit of conditioner and combing. A bit of frizz, but nothing to worry about.

Back to Valenshy, should I have gotten a flat iron? The curling iron didn't do much to that mass of frizz, I could feel it getting snagged on the way out. Wondering if a flat iron would make a better difference.

Flat irons are hit or miss.

G3 hair is a pain. Try to focus on smaller sections of the hair. Wet it first to help it glide through.

I'll keep trying then. Doesn't help that my Valenshy had the worst frizz out of my entire collection.
I was continually greasing the hair with a mixture of water & conditioner.

Got a flat iron, seemed a lot more effective than a curling iron. Wasn't a perfect job, but a lot smoother than before. The tail end of Valenshy's tail is a lost cause, couldn't get that smooth no matter how many times I ran it through the iron. Kept it greased up with conditioner/water. Once dry, both G1 AJ's and Valenshys tail ended up kinda bushy. Any way to prevent that?

This is the best I can do with the worst of frizz, though I was hoping to get the hair as smooth as it was new.

Something I always find helps with defrizzed tails (or even slightly frizzy still) is to, while wet, wrap them around one of the pony's hind legs, wrap that up in some paper towel and let sit for at least 24 hours. Then don't comb it :)
In fact, I do that regardless of frizz, because I like the look, but it really helps keep it in place :)
good job defrizzing! :lovey:

Her hair looks great for a G3 IMO.
