Halloween bakery stuffs!
« on: September 17, 2019, 08:36:59 PM »
Hi friends!

I've been planning on making a Halloween cake since the beginning of this year and I'm wondering, what options do you like?

Red velvet cake, made with two cakes stacked onto of each other and a combination of red icing/red jam in between them. With the middle of the cake scooped out and the red mixture put in there, maybe some candy eyeballs or something then seal it up with fondant or something, disguising it as a regular cake with "Happy Birthday" or something.

Maybe just a regular cake with some spooky designs on it or something.

And cookie bats, either made black with activated charcoal, covered in black chocolate or made dark brown with dark chocolate.

Keep in mind I'm in Australia so we don't have a lot of Halloween stuff.

I remember vividly when visiting Australia as a 6 year old kid that I was shocked there wasn’t much Halloween stuff back then in 2007. I brought my costume and everything, and was so psyched to celebrate with my relatives! Good to see it hasn’t changed much :silly:
As for your cake conundrum, all the suggested options sound good! Personally, I’d go for the cookie/candy bar option since
A) bats are awesome
B) cake is awesome
C) chocolate cookie bats on cake. Don’t think I need to explain why that is a good idea.
    Good luck!
This. Sentence. Is. False! Dontthinkaboutitdontthinkaboutit.

Why not all of it?
You know of the charcoal and medication thing right? I'd make it black with food coloring but that's me.

Charcoal and medication? No, but please do tell.

Thank you for your opinion! I think Halloween's eventually getting more popular over here, we get some cheap candy baskets, costumes, and even horrible candy but nothing like America has.

Activated charcoal can basically null the effects of medication you take up to two hours after taking the medication. It's used for overdose stuff in hospitals because of its absorbant properties. It's becoming more popular as a food ingredient in recipes but they don't always warn you about it...

I'm so glad you pointed that out, I was going to as well until I saw you mention it. Medications affected can include birth control and antidepressants which people may not tell others they take, so they wouldn't think to ask about charcoal. Go the food coloring route!

Oh yes I didn't even think about sharing it with others who may have to take something, definitely do food coloring or some dark chocolate explosions if you were gonna share!

Yikes, I never knew of that! Glad I know now! I'll see if I can track down some black food dye!

Its' too late now, but maybe for next year you could bake a cake, but use a large mixing bowl as a sort of mold to make a half-globe shaped cake. Then, once its baked, turn it upside down, and frost it to look like a (very) large eyeball.
