Perfume puff hair?
« on: August 24, 2019, 06:15:16 AM »
Hi friends!

I recently decided to buy a Candylocks doll (I got Candy Dotty) and I don't know how I thought about this but the fluff looks near identical to the perfume puff ponies hair.

Anybody got a Candylocks doll? And would this mean that we might be able to identify the supplier/what material it is?

Ooo, interesting. I've never seen this doll, but they are so fun
Is their hair just wool roving though? When you get the doll will you be able to compare it to the texture of a perfume puff in person?

I've kinda done that, as I have a perfume puff second hand but she only had a bit of puff left and that was dirty af, despite washings and comparing them through touch, they felt similar.

However using a pic of a mint perfume puff and comparing it with Candy Dotty, I'd say visually they're the exact same material.

I moved this to Pony Corral from Customs for you, as I think you'll get more responces here. It overlaps some with customs but also can be considered a general question.

I've never heard of candylocks dolls before so I had to google - those are cute! and a LOT of potential pony hair, haha!
I find it hard to believe it would be wool roving, I really don't think it'd be used in toys like that. It's definitely got to be nylon fibre of some sort :) (although from the pictures it DOES look very similar to wool batts for spinning, hah!) I'm so intrigued, could you post a pic of their hair next to eachothers'?

nah, it's not animal hair. Mohair is common to use for pp customs, though, as it does have similar poof :)

Yeah, PP hair is definitely some kind of synthetic.  Probably some sort of chemically treated nylon!

Okie I brought out Sweet Suds from the attic (Hope she doesn't mind) and compared them, both visually and touch wise.

Here's my rough Sweet Suds with washed and brushed puff.

And here's Candy Dotty

(Also sorry she's blurry)

And here's the comparison

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

My notes

Only difference Candy Dotty had more/finer hair but that can be attributed to how much of the material is groped into a single strain (?) compared to how much hair is put into the plugs.

Sweet Suds had a much paler blue, the endings of her hair were kinda grouped (?) and weren't as smooth as Candy Dotty's. I, however, attribute all that to Sweet Suds age and the condition she was in for a long time. Plus what remained of her hair was conditioned, washed and brushed so that may be a factor.

However, both had poofy hair that was scented (Most likely the hair was the scented part) they both have straight cut edges when removed out of box (Candy Dotty is prone to her hair becoming uneven)

I'd say it'd be a convincing rehair, even in Sweet Suds poor state they were nearly identical in look and touch!

This is actually really great!
I am VERY glad you made this discovery! A candylocks doll is not something I would have bought (not a doll collector) and this is such an interesting discovery. It has been attempted to discover what is PP hair for many years with no success. There has not been anything on the market that is comparable. Customizers use currycombed yarn, combed wool, and sometimes mohair to do those 'fan puffs' that can look very good.
However, none of that is nearly as sturdy or long as real PP hair. Yes, some pp hair will come off as it is de-tangled and can't brush like ordinary hair, but it doesn't simply fall apart like natural OR artificial yarns do. PP hair is guaranteed to be synthetic, but no one knew how the fiber could be so long yet so sturdy and also have that texture.

How does the candylocks doll hold up to combing or styling?
Is it easy to use?
If you brush it a bit to style it into (say, a smaller braid) does it come apart any?

This is def. cool stuff, I'll have to get my hands on a candylocks for sure now...

I've styled it (not separating the strains) and the hair had minor wear from my interactions, although I just wet it and idk how to describe it but it followed the same way my PP hair got wet and how it felt. It even dried the same way (although while the outside hair is dry, the inside a still a teeny bit wet) with the same towel. However, the way it conditioned was different but that could be a combination of how much hair Candy Dotty had and maybe a different amount of conditioner was used.

I'll brush it the same way I did with Sweet Suds later.

I think Cotton Sandy's blue is pretty close to Sweet Suds colouring, but a two pack with Cora Creme and Charli Chip has a near identical blue to Sweet Suds.

Update friends

I brushed the end of Candy Dotty and while some fluff came out, it produced a near identical (to me) look to Sweet Suds. And even on their website they say it's brushable and what not thanks to their unique hair(?)

Here's a link - http://candylocksdolls.com/en_us/toys/p30686

It seems like there's no white at all for Sweet Lily or green that matches Lavender Lace, however it seems like all the other ponies are covered. The options may change in the future. Will update with possible colour matches later.

!!!

This is so awesome! I'm super curious how that look is achieved in the first place, but either way, it's neat that there's now a Perfume Puff equivalent on the market to study and use for re-hairing. Have you sent an e-mail/letter to the company inquiring on the materials? It might be worth doing, just to see if anyone could tell you where they get their supply. I suppose they might be reluctant to tell you in case of competitors trying to get that information, but if you were to explain about the whole restoration aspect, they might be more willing to help!

Nice find, freezestime! Hopefully the Perfume Puff mystery will finally be able to be solved <3
