Post a pic of the damage, so we can see what you're up against.  :)

Water paper is your friend here: if you rub it carefully over the scuffed areas you will be able to remove them. The jewel will not be a 'shiny' as before but it will look significantly better as it will no longer be scuffed. Take your time and be patient.

You can then paint over the jewel with pearlescent acrylic paint from your craft store.

Thank you, NightGlider!  I have a Masquerade with eyes that have been significantly rubbed, and I've been sorta mulling over what I could do to help them look better.

Only...what's water paper...?  A quick search didn't turn up anything that looked like it might be what you're talking about.

Okay so I revise my prior opinion-  apparently there are a variety of products that can help you remove scratches.  I would say anything that can get the scratching/hazing out of plastic glasses lenses or watches or even headlights-  would work as well for the plastic eye jewels.

Tutorial
https://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Scratches-From-Plastic-Lens-Glasses

According to this tutorial-  wash first with non-abrasive toothpaste or a mix of baking soda and water- then apply scratch remover

BTW thank you for this topic-  it would never have occurred to me that there was such a thing as scratch remover!

Would water paper be a sort of sandpaper? I can't find anything else that sounds relevant.

Sorry guys: yes, water paper is a type of sand paper with an extremely fine grit. So it almost 'buffs' instead of sanding. It is indeed called water paper and here in South Africa we can buy it at any hardware store  :)
