If G1 had a 'mane six' type concept, who would they be?

I did have a little idea for the original six as main characters a while ago, but all my sketches are lost. I'd want them to look a tad more interesting first! The one color per pony thing is kinda cute but I'd prefer some more color in our cast. 
Also, I just updated the wiki to say Factfile instead of backcard on 4/6 of the ponies. Once my mind stops being fogged up I'll update Blossom and Cotton Candy to the appropriate one.

There was a point in the past where not many UK backcards had surfaced and it was generally assumed that because some of the Fact File entries were matching to UK stories, all of them must have been. But it's been some years now since that's been disproven.

So I guess you guys know this by this point, but citing the Wiki in a discussion on UK ponies is a red flag to a bull as far as I am concerned. This is a site that still can't get the sets or release dates sorted out for a whole plethora of UK and European releases. See below:

I feel like so long as that's such a mess, and that's really basic information that's readily available online, it's clearly not a viable source for things like backcards or stories, which is a bit more specialised.

In short I'm fed up with having to prove my information because I am not the Wiki, whereas the Wiki can be wrong about stuff and nobody expects it to prove its information because it's the Wiki.

I've spent 20 years working on UK pony stuff. It would be nice if sometimes people just took my word for it.

Several years back I did make a Mane 6 of G1 ponies for a series of stories.

-Wind Whistler: Our logical leader.
-Fizzy: Her flighty and ever optimistic friend.
-Gusty: The bruiser of the group always looking for a fight.
-Shady: The shy worrier who wishes she could do more but afraid of doing it.
-Flutterbye: The often shallow and vane one who regardless fights the good fight.
-Tootsie: The "big guy" of the group who is the strongest (even if Gusty disagrees) and love life but has trouble with Spoonerisms.

It was a really weird storyline.  The ponies discover an ancient Decepticon ground bridge had been tied into the rainbow.  They can use it to travel across their own world and to Megan's ranch specifically in ours so non-Pegasi can visit.  King Charlatan's freeze the world plan leads to the cold war between the Ice Orcs and Lava Demons to flare into open conflict.  The coming of Tambelon sparks a magic arms race.

I think the original ponies from the Midnight Castle special would be the most popular though.

I wish there had been a way to make this a kind of selective poll but it seems like some ponies come up a lot. It's interesting how much the tv series influenced it because I barely had any access to that as a kid...but obviously it had a much bigger presence in people's minds in other places.

I think it would be the early ponies, who featured most often in the early stories and books.

Glory and Moondancer, Firefly and Medly would be the top four. Think of the story "Lost in the Clouds". 

And we need a couple of earth ponies too. I would rule out Sundance, as popular as she was, she's a separate story line with Megan.

Who was most often seen in the books and stories?  Lemondrop was pretty frequent. And probably Peachy or Cotton Candy.

And I made the witches a joke.  Like on Hydia's calendar the agenda of everyday is "Kill the ponies."  She also uses a lot of P-words when discussing the ponies.

Getting back to the topic at hand.  I think the show has impacted a lot of opinions here because the writers clearly had favorites even if they were supposed showcase them all.  Wind Whistler and Fizzy are probably so beloved because of how they were depicted in the show.  Though, Wind Whistler and Fizzy were the central ponies in their lines' commercials.

As earth pony, I would like to say applejack, but as she is already a main in G4, and I want to say Lemon Drop as a caml, down to earth character, but we need more green in the mix, so I coose Magic Star. She would be the smart one.

As pegasus, Firefly, the fierce one (also, because I love her colour combo ) she woule probably be the main MAIN character, kinda like Twiligth Sparkle (but no, she will never be an alicorn..)

Unicorn? Galaxy. I'm nor sure if I want her to have TEs though. Not for this version. Or maybe? She wold probably be the one that dreams away, and ha her head in the sky all the time.

And of course there would need to be a rainbow pony. The first set is probably more iconic, but I think the second set is much prettier. So I choose Confetti. She would be the joker ^^

It would be fun to have a male character as a main character as well. I mean boys and girls can be friends too! (and the boys might need a character thy can associate with)
I'll go with Barnacle. He seems to be adventurous and fun.

 And last one, SS Twilight (but without Flocking) She would be the oe loving scary stories and spooy adventurous. Haloween being her favourite holiday.

For the TV-era G1 I'd go with Fizzy, Gusty, Surprise, Magic Star, Cupcake, and Wind Whistler, and for the TV special era, Firefly, Medley, Twilight, Applejack, Moondancer, and Bubbles. (Maybe replace Moondancer with Glory?)

My idea isn't so creative as a lot of the others in this thread, but I think it would be kinda cool if the G1 mane six were the ponies that G4 mane six are based on. So that would be Twilight, Firefly, Posey, Surprise, Applejack, and either Glory or Sparkler. It fills the two of each pony type criteria, and there would be a good mix of colours in there.
